1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not your average military sci-fi By Amazon Customer There are plenty of new Indy writters churning out military sci-fi. Most of it makes for exciting action packed entertainment. Some of it can disappoint with characters that lack dimension or stories that push an obvious political or social bias held by the author.Mr. Calouette has separated himself from the pack in all of his work by not falling into pushing a personal agenda or writing the easy way by creating comic book like characters and plots, hoping to cover these short falls with over the top action. Don't get me wrong these stories are thrilling. In Calouette's universe war is hell and as in real life clear winners are hard to find. In Hard Nova he has taken his work to a new level. There are plenty of battle scences including one of the most massive and complex space fleet on fleet engagements I have ever read. However the story adds a depth that few writters have explored and does so with a refreshing economy of word. Calouette artfully explores human motivations behind duty, !oyalty and honor. He illustrates the complex process of beliefs we assimilate from our society versus the truths behind those beliefs and the often painful process of coming to terms with the truth. More impressive is the handling of a conflict that becomes three sided without having an evil empire a one of the force's. As in real life we have societies acting on what they believe to be good intentions but having to fight to defend aganst a differing societies philosophical beliefs which they hold to be well meaning. This story for all the complexity of its ideas and vast multi thread plot moves along a good pace. The realism of the action scenes is above par, bullets miss often. It's hard to hit a target in combat conditions, people fall and it hurts like hell and you might personally hate the guy at your side but if you have the same enemy he's your comrade. I'm no writters and I hope my review is adequate enough to help spread the word on Casey Calouette. This guy is a winner and his work so far is some of the very best of the new sci-fi.

Plenty of Fleet and Ground action--the beginning of what should be a great series By lawboss Authors improve with time and Mr. Calouette is certainly no exception. I enjoyed the pace of the read and the improved writing style. This offering has a good deal of fleet and ground action wrapped up nicely in a suspenseful tale. The writing style is crisp and the characters interesting. If you enjoy a read with plenty of action, suspense and solid pace, this offering does not disappoint. I look forward to the next offering in the series.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No Star Too Far - Mixed Up Jumble By J. Naiser This a hard review to write as I have mixed feelings on the book. The first 2/3 of the book was my least favorite part while the last 1/3 of the book redeemed this from a 1 star to a 3 star. As others have mentioned there is little if any character development and its unclear until the nearly the end of the book exactly who your main characters are and what drives them.The most frustrating part of the book was the extended escape scene(s) that all blended together to make it a long and boring in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book. The best way that I can compare it that the majority of the book is like a chase scene in a movie. When done well its a tense exciting part of the movie, but imagine a 45 minute chase scene in a 1 1/2 hour movie. No matter how well done it just drags out and gets old fast. This is what the first half of the book felt like to me. The main characters run from place to place narrowly escaping from one improbable scenario to another. While this was fine the first few times it happened, string together 10 or so of these and it gets old and repetitive. Thankfully the book changes about 2/3 of the way through and we actually get some story and plot development. In the future I would hope the author would focus more on writing a story instead of a extended chase scene.
