About the Author
Neil Somerville has been writing the bestselling ‘Your Chinese Horoscope’ series since 1987 and, as his readers have discovered, these are no ordinary Horoscope books. Room for improvement By FWAlmanac I bought this looking for the next level depth and specificity in my predictions for 2016, but I was mostly disappointed. This may be a good introduction book, but I find that without question, the best book for that purpose if you are interested in Chinese astrology is the Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes by Theodora Lau. In fact, it is the best book I know of for the more advanced practitioner as well. The only more advanced book that I know of is the I Ching itself, which is not on the topic of Chinese astrology per se, but represents the basis for most if not all Chinese traditional philosophy. I use the translation by Hellmut Wilhelm and find it to be excellent. I found while reading my predictions in Somerville's 2016 book that I continually lost focus due to the vague nature of the advice given. After reading it I did not have very much to take away with me. It seems to me that the author has tried a bit too hard to westernize his advice for my taste, essentially rendering advice without an adequate explanation of the basis and symbolic underpinnings of that advice as viewed through the lens of Chinese traditional symbolism.
