It's quirky and fun, but it also tackles very serious topics, such as homelessness, exploitation, corruption, alienation and loneliness, among other important themes. As a writer of homeless issues and an outreach worker for the homeless population, I am aware that except for the great era of nineteenth century literature that featured street kids as characters (Ragged Dick, Oliver Twist, and Les Miserables, for example), homeless characters are very hard to find in fiction. I felt this book sought to represent this otherwise underrepresented population, and this move was further strengthened by the terrific characterization of Theo as a street kid. He is both compassionate and kind, and his heart is not hardened by his underdog circumstances. Read this book if you'd like a break from the traditional narrative, both in substance and style: If you do so, you will encounter a great read that is at once an accurate social commentary as regards the homeless situation, as well as a fairy tale that encourages you to dream big and never give up. Once again author Jason Chan wrote a story that had me hooked from beginning to end. You feel like you are there with the main character Theo and root for him throughout the story. It does address serious social issues and is a bit graphic, but definitely worth the read. I've already recommended it to a few people I know!!!
