By Alice Lee The Exodus universe that Doug has created is by far one of the most imaginative yet believable worlds that I have read in the space opera genre. I just can't enough of these great books! The additional front created by one of humanity's greatest errors has come back to haunt Emperor Sean and his empire. This just isn't any typical enemy nor a contrived attempt to create a new thread for the sake of additional plot lines, the way Doug portrays this enemy AI as a new threat to humanity is both fearsome yet interestingly logical at the same time. Without revealing too much, what the machines have been able to come up with in their 'brute force' approach to war is fascinating! Some of our key favorite characters are in this new series and yet many new interesting faces make this a a non-stop page turner. Now I'm not sure which of Doug's two Exodus series books I'm longing for next - a true dilemma!

By John A Let me preface this by saying that I am a big Doug Dandridge fan and that the Exodus universe is among my favorite to return to.Without giving anything away, what the author is doing over the last few books in the series is gradually expanding his universe out beyond the core characters of the initial series. This is a fantastic idea as it gives us a much broader view of the Exodus universe which, for fans of universe building sci-fi, is amazing since it is a promise of endless adventures to come.However, the narrative depth of the books is decreasing as the series grows. Rather then a larger narrative that takes in all sides we are really just presented with a few large set piece battles with some interesting tactics. Gone is the thrill of knowing what the enemy commander is thinking or doing and non-human races are basically treated as humans in costumes.In short, even as the series moves past its core characters and out into the periphery, expanding its horizons, our viewport into that larger universe is getting smaller and smaller and that is disappointing.You should absolutely read this series, its fantastic, but I have to leave this here in hopes that the author reads it and gives it some thought. A powerful part of his novels is that we get regular check-ins from all sides and in the last few books that has slowly been waning and specifically in this book its basically extinguished.Keep them coming Dan, I'll keep buying! But give us back that broader view!Also: The general quality of the books is going down slightly. Not in any way that would make me stop being a fan but the editing is not as tight, the story perspectives switch way too rapidly and it feels like they are being paced so that they can be easily converted into a TV show or a movie. The original books had a very steady narrative hand but over the last few installments its become increasingly frenzied and Bolthole takes it to a whole new level.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good (not great) military space fiction- slow start but gets better after first third By David G I wavered between four and five stars on this, especially with the reasonable pricing. This is not a deep book and while it is not required, reading the rest of the Exodus series adds to background.Good (not great) military science fiction. Although the space battles seem somewhat boring this may actually be the case if weapons are launched with four or five hour approaches. Reminiscent of the British Invasion of Falklands - here we come, we're coming, we're almost there, ah hah. . On the other hand the Klassekian civilians taking up arms against the machine invaders was one of the more stirring scenarios I have read in a while. Much better than the authors normal ground combat story telling. By viewing the battle through the eyes of civilians awaiting certain death the last minute save by the "cavalry" is just as exciting as the old westerns made it.This is an entertaining read, but with no real character development. In addition the author falls into a similar trap as his first exodus novel by introducing too many characters and flipping planet viewpoints too much. He writes better when he sticks to one battle front. The story starts slow and I almost gave up in first third , but it did get better.Slight spoiler alert:The author has created an machine enemy battle station that may be too powerful to defeat with his regular space fleets. So he introduces another alien race possibly to lend some possible defense? However, the empire already has the worm hole within a worm hole weapon that probably could unleash enough energy to destroy these battle stations if used far enough way from a solar system with life in it. Especially since they only accelerate at 20g's. Maybe someone in the Empire will have an insight.
