Fly Guy Presents: Bats (Scholastic Reader, Level 2), by Tedd Arnold

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Arnold examines bats in this latest addition to his nonfiction series, which has taken on sharks, dinosaurs, insects, firefighters, and space. Following a formula that has worked so well in the past, the author offers a ton of facts about bats within a fictional framing story: this time, a trip to the nocturnal house at the zoo. Strong photos work well with the illustrations, which include word balloons and standard text. As Fly Guy and his human friend Buzz walk through the exhibit, they encounter a wide variety of bats and learn about habitat, what bats eat (including the diet of the ever-popular vampire bat), how they fly, echolocation, and more. The pronunciation for potentially difficult words is provided, along with a clear definition; however, there is no glossary. Arnold covers a wide breadth of information in a clear, concise, and fun way that is sure to please the intended audience. Some may find fault with the author's failure to mention white-nose syndrome, which has killed more than five million bats in North America since 2006. VERDICT A popular series tackles a kid-friendly topic. Sure to fly off library shelves.—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

It tells you how bats, sleep, eat and act. Bats are nocturnal which means they are awake at night and sleep during the day. They live in groups called colonies. Some colonies in caves have more than 20 million bats. That would scare me. There are more than 1200 different species. I found it interesting that bats live on every continent except for Antarctica. Some bats are really small, about an inch long. My favorite part was learning about the greater flying fox bat because it is really long. Did you know that vampire bats eat only blood? That gave me nightmares. Bats are the only mammals in the world that can fly. Some bats can see in the dark. All bats have really great hearing. This book is full of facts about bats. If you’re interested in learning about bats, this is a good book. I find bats scary so I wouldn’t want to read it again. I did like the pictures. I think if you want to learn about bats, this would be a fun book for 4-10 year olds. I would give it four stars.Review by Cameron H., age 6, New Mexico Mensa

" She says it makes her so By Hannah Wilson After studying bats just before Halloween in her 1st grade class and then reading this book, my daughter was very upset when she read in the book that vampire bats' "fangs help them suck blood." She says it makes her so upset that the book says this because "it's going to scare the little guys who get it read to them." The truth, she says, is that "they lap or lick up the blood." While this is equally creepy to me, the truth is that this book is supposed to teach kids scientific truths about bats, and not all the facts are factual. Someone dropped the ball here, and it makes me question the accuracy of the other facts in this and the other "Fly Guy Presents" books, taking the books from the nonfiction realm into the fictional realm.
