Pennsylvania German Pioneers, Volumes I & II: A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808 . Widely regarded as the most complete collection of colonial passenger lists ever published, this work comprises all the original lists of persons who arrived in the port of Philadelphia between 1727 and 1808. The lists were assembled from state archives and give the names of 38,000 immigrants, names of ships, dates of arrival, and places of origin. As no other port maintained such extensive and continuous records, this work is foremost among compilations of its kind. Volume I covers the period 1727-1775 and contains 324 ship passenger lists, including captains' lists, signers of the oath of allegiance, and signers of the oath of abjuration. Volume II covers the period 1785-1808 and includes 182 additional lists, in many cases giving ages, occupations, and birth-places. All names and variant spellings are listed in the Index, which comprises some 450 pages and 50,000 references. Our publication is a reprint of the work originally compiled for the Pennsylvania German Society.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pa German Pioneers' Ship Lists by Straussberger and Hinke Vol. I. By Bill Jaze Informative, easy to use. Includes all three passenger lists per date and ship, which means you may find a passenger who was missing in I. Daniel Rupp's book, 30,000 Immigrants... I love this feature! Also includes. Information on whether the date cited is a landing date or the date of completing the oath to King Charles II and the state of PA. The index is in Vol. II, however, and so both volumes are necessary. The third volume is interesting rather than informative and includes the signatures of immigrants. Per ship, per date. It is thrilling to see the way an ancestor wrote his name or whether he could write at all. One other aspect of Vol. I, is that some ship lists included women's and children's names, which is extremely useful in identifying wives' maiden names. This is something Rupp's did not address. Vol. I also includes the original order of immigrants, which can be useful in identifying other family members who do not share your ancestor's surname. According to Strausberger, immigrants arranged themselves into traveling groups, and entered their names on the ship lists accordingly. Straussberger indicates that the order can provide valuable clues and he berates Rupp for ignoring the groupings in his book of ship immigration lists.
