I would have avoided some pitfalls and loooong detours that have taken years to correct.If you want a writing mentor, you need look no further than Cec Murphey's Unleash the Writer Within. The subtitle calls it "the essential writers' companion."I would have to agree.What's Different About This Book?It's honest, it's transparent, and it comes from the heart. It also made me laugh on more than one occasion because the author had the guts to say some things that need to be said about the writing life, how we market, and so many other topics dear to a writer's heart.Before you get stressed out and caught up in all the things "they say" you have to do and be and write about to be successful, I urge you to get a copy of this book. It will help you discover your own personal voice and style so you sound authentic. It will show you how to actually make friends with your inner critic and writer's block--and eliminate them. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Your own Writing Retreat By Jerry Mac I enjoyed reading Cec Murphey's UNLEASH THE WRITER WITHIN. The book basically asks questions and encourages the reader to reflect and respond to questions about our motivations and experiences. What's unique is that it's not merely a motivational or inspirational book (I'm tired of the "you can do it!" type of products that have been thrown at writers). Instead, this book asks writers to explore the difficult parts of our lives, and see how those have helped shape our work and message. Working through the book is very much like going to a writer's retreat where the facilitator isn't satisfied with simplistic, pat answers. A worthwhile companion book for those who want to go deep with their writing.

This is not a how-to for the mechanics of good writing, but a book focused on the inner life of the writer. I felt as though Mr. Murphey had crawled inside my head and wrote this just for me. I had no idea that other people thought and felt like I did. His writing helped me realize that I need to be true to myself in my writing. Some of his aphorisms include:I write to find out who I am.I write because it's my gift. The more I write, the more I know who I am.If you focus on being different, how can you be true to yourself? And if you're not true to yourself, who are you?This book was encouraging, refreshing, and empowered me to keep moving forward.
