About the Author

Dixie Lee Brown lives and writes in Central Oregon, inspired by gorgeous scenery and 300 sunny days a year. Having moved from South Dakota as a child to Montana and then to Oregon, she feels at home in the west.

Dixie has two daughters that are grown and off living their own dreams. She resides with two dogs and a cat, and they are currently all the responsibility she can handle! On a ride-along with her best friend Pady who is a state trooper which ends up in his death and her being on run as a suspect for murder. Mac is down on her luck.Jim Brady is former navy seal and currently trying to find Maria to reunite her with her son after the child ends up under a drug lords custody. Brady suffers from PTSD and hence has being keeping his distance from his family ever since he returned from Iraq.They meet when Mac is hiding out in the house Maria was supposed to be staying in at. Brady finds her there and decides to help her. Mac and Brady had chemistry and were good together. Their romance wasn’t rushed, it was sweet, at times passionate and soft at other times. Both the protagonist were strong characters with strong personalities to go with. Mac who had been through a trauma stayed strong and didn’t turn into a damsel in distress when faced with difficult circumstances. Brady at his heart is a protector and hence he was protective and caring towards Mac after he finds out what had happened and who she was running from.The suspense part was light in the book, early on we find out who exactly was involved, how everything was connected and who was responsible for the death of Mac’s best friend so it was just what was going to happen and how they going to catch the criminal while keeping Mac, Maria and her son safe that remained unsolved. Quibbles: Not going to use names but someone should not have died, the death seemed pointless. That person could have finally found their happy ending. :( And someone’s return at the end had me going 'WHAATTT?' I mean the whole thing was based on said person’s death so…..It just didn’t make sense. Also I wanted a proper epilogue.Overall, it was an enjoyable read and makes for a great light romantic suspense story.ARC was generously provided by the publisher via edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Well Thought Out Plot, Reads like a Crime Novel By julie whiteley Tempt the Night by Dixie Lee Brown is a 2015 Avon Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.This story starts off with an unexpected emotional punch that sets the tone for the entire book. Mac and Jim form one of those instant bonds and they know they can trust one another. But, Mac is on the run from the law and Jim has a horrifying past which left him with severe PTSD. Often when we read about PTSD the focus is on the person with the disorder and the symptoms, but the author goes further than that by highlighting the challenges spouses and families faces when a loved one suffers from PTSD. What Jim deals with is very serious, but if anyone can deal with it, it's Mac.While I love plot twist and fast moving story lines, there were times when major events occurred and I didn't have time to digest them properly. Sometimes the story slowed down a bit in order for the drama and romance to unfold, but the crime element moved along a little too fast and as a result the characters often had muted responses to major plot developments. The wrap up was a little hasty, but I was happy with the ending overall.Other than that, the plot was well thought out with an even balance between the romance, drama, and suspense. The book read like a crime novel which was a nice change of pace from many romantic suspense novels. There was character growth and development between Mac and Jim, and although the couple will have a hard road ahead, the power of love is a great equalizer. Overall this was a quick and enjoyable read fans romantic suspense will want to to check out. 3.5 rounded to 4

Samantha 'Mac' McAllister finds herself in big trouble when she goes on a ride along with her best friend & cop Patrick 'Paddy' Callahan one night. What starts out as a simple drive-by check turns into a horror of epic proportions for Mac. Her best friend is shot multiple times and left for dead and she must run for her life when the killers see her at the scene. But before Paddy dies he hands Mac a card from his pocket with information that may be the only chance she has to save her own life from dirty cops that will stop at nothing to silence her.Former Navy SEAL Jim Brady is a loner and he knows that lifestyle is best for him, his family and anyone else around him. He constantly fights flashbacks from his time in Iraq and believes everyone else is better off kept at a distance.When Jim finds himself helping Mac he finds the cold in his heart begin to melt. He knows he will do whatever it takes to protect her. Can he protect his heart as well?

Open your mind By Mikayla I have been reading almost every new erotica book to hit the Amazon shelves for the past 5 years now, and I thought this was a little different take on the norm! If you never liked 50 shades, you probably won’t like Grey - but everything’s worth reading once, so give it a try. Keep in mind this is retelling 50 shades, just a different perspective!If you’re not in the mood for Grey, there are the novelette options like Dark Petals by Deidre St Luke the up and coming writer.Lastly, I have read some of the reviews posted and while I am not bashing anyone's opinion I would simply like to point out some facts.1. This is a retelling of the original story but from Christians POV--therefore how can the author make it be different or original2. Whereas I did find Christian to be immature and childish in his actions and thoughts those of us who read the original series new this already. His growth didn't come around until after the second book started. Even Dr. Flynn tells Ana that in a lot of ways emotionally Christian is still a child so this is not news.3. I do believe this book helped to better understand Christian I am not altogether certain it was necessary as the series was already a huge success but just as I am sure with other readers the times I really wanted to know what he was thinking came in book two and three.For instance when he and Ana marreid, what was on his mind as he and Ros made their way home after Charlie Tango crashed, and I really want into his head the night he confronted Elena at his mother's home.4. As far as the movie I watched it and believed it to have been as true to the book as was possible for a decent rating. Although I honestly believe that there is NO ONE that could have been picked to play the part of Christian that would have been accepted by all the fans of this series. Each woman as we read FSOG had a mental picture of Christian and everyone's picture would have varied in some way.Anyway I hope to hear more from Christians POV IN THE FUTURE

I am one of the hordes of people who clamored for Christian's version of his romance with Anastasia Steele. I begged for it, in fact. I thought his perspective, included at the end of Fifty Shades Freed, was far more captivating than anything Ana had to say.So when I found out that E.L. James, who clearly recognizes an opportunity when she sees one, was publishing Christian's POV, I was as giddy as a thirteen-year-old at a One Direction concert.Giddier, even.And then - AND THEN - I read the book.The thing about the Fifty Shades juggernaut is that the books, while ridiculously written and unintentionally hilarious, were fun. They were addicting in the worst possible way, and I could not put them down.Literary crack: you know they're bad for you, but you don't care.The movie version was better than I thought it would be. Dakota Johnson! I know, right? Who knew? Together with director Sam Taylor Johnson, she gave Ana a much-needed personality injection, emphasizing the virtually nonexistent friskiness of the book. (Jamie Dornan - well, he's gorgeous, and he kind of looks like the Christian I pictured. Here's hoping he loosens up a little in the next one.)Lately, though, it appears as if E.L. James has started taking herself a wee tad too seriously. First she makes Sam Taylor Johnson so miserable that Johnson backs out from directing the sequel. Then James decides she will commandeer the script and write it herself. I'm waiting for the announcement that she's going to direct, too.This brings me to Grey, which is just all around a regrettable book.Here is why I was excited about this one: we get Christian's voice. Let's be honest here for a minute. Do you remember Ana from the books, or do you remember Christian? Which character intrigued you more? CHRISTIAN DID. Ana is about as interesting as a speed bump, but Christian? Christian is glorious. He's complex. He's fascinating. He's utterly compelling. When James tossed out that teaser at the end of Freed, it made me sit up straight and squeeze my thighs together in anticipation.So much potential.I won't even address the writing, other than to point out that you will be relieved to know that there are no goddesses or half-moon-glasses-wearing subconsciouses, THANK THE SWEET GHOST OF TWILIGHT. Gone, too, are the apexes of Ana's thighs and the junctures of her thighs, although those have been sadly replaced by Christian's rather clinical usage of "labia." Remaining are the smirking, the eye-rolling, the lip biting, and the sighing.You just can't keep an eye-rolling, smirking Dom down, I suppose.Okay, I have to mention such soul-stirring lines as these:"She's oil on my troubled, deep, dark waters.""I'm going to make you come like a freight train, baby."Just ... I mean ... what woman doesn't want to hear THAT?What I wanted from this book was something new. At the very least, I wanted something FUN. Like the first three. I wanted to revel in the bad writing - biting my lips, smirking, sighing and rolling my eyes right along with Christian and Ana. How about an insight into Christian? Or a different interpretation of the same event, a stimulus to renew my interest in the Copper-Haired Boy Wonder.What I got was the same damn thing, all over again.Rinse and repeat.Yeah, James throws me a few new nuggets. I now know where those Tess of the d'Urbervilles books came from, and I know a lot more about Christian's professional wheeling and dealing than I ever cared to know. There are way too many dreams about his tortured childhood. I kind of got the point after the first two or three, E.L., but thanks for repeating them OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.There is one scene toward the end - the one in which Ana asks to be punished - that was what I'd call somewhat revelatory. Seeing it through Christian's eyes was pretty darn awesome and far more interesting than any scene that came before it. In fact, that scene triggers James's only true creativity in this book, as we get to see what happens to Christian after Ana walks out on him.So basically a chapter's worth of interesting reading.Here's what I realized while reading Grey: Christian's perspective should have been included in the original three books, perhaps in alternating chapters. M. Pierce did this with tremendous potency in the Night Owl trilogy, and it would have served this series well if James had incorporated Christian's POV. I also realized that Christian, for however much this book bored me, remains one of the more commanding (no pun intended) characters I've encountered in fiction. There is something about that man that makes me want more of him.Now let's talk about the hot headboard rocking. It's delicious. I liked getting in Christian's head as he decided which of his toys to implement, and I liked knowing the sensations he experienced with Ana. There are no new sexual escapades to read about, and those of you who enjoyed The Tampon Scene will be thrilled to know that it makes an appearance.What you learn from reading Grey is that this is Christian's story to tell. Not Ana's. Yeah, it's supposed to be her Journey of Discovery or whatever, but she's so uninspiring and dull that you don't care. Christian learns more about himself than Ana will ever know about herself, and his changes are far more profound.Is this the last we will see of Christian Grey in print? I kind of hope so, even as I feel some reluctance at saying goodbye to him. But it's time. Unless E.L. This is the fourth book In the Fifty Shades series and ends in a cliffhanger.>I must admit that I love the Fifty Shades of Grey series. I also liked the movie. That being said, this book, which is the EXACT same story as FSOG, only told from Christian's point of view, is the best of the bunch. Christian is a very private person. Reading the story through Ana's eyes, he seems cold and distant. He is anything but. He is trying to please Ana, but he is confused. His dreams reveal so much more about his real mother. It is heartbreaking to know she called him maggot. The dream with Elena is the most revealing. He says he is over Elena, but he thinks of her quite a bit. Ana was a bit whiny to me, but I like her a lot more from Christian's eyes.>I hope the author will write book 2 and 3 from Christian's point of view. He is fascinating and so unsure of himself! Not until this book, did I realize how distracted he was at work. I wondered how he could invest in a consuming relationship with Ana and still run a successful company, flawlessly.>This book is recommended for an adult audience. Highly recommend.

By The Bookie Monster Nothing can shatter a man's dreams like finding out the super secret magical cloak mysteriously showing up on your doorstep wasn't actually meant for you...after you've bonded with it for life.Forget everything you think you know about heroes and villains. Phipps redefines the genre. The Rules of Supervillainy is wildly entertaining, delightfully original, and will make readers everywhere yearn to don spandex and join the crusade.Gary is just a regular guy, with with problems. Money woes, a checkered family past, and a whole lot of resentment plague the unemployed protagonist until a superheroes death finds him in possession of the deceased's magical cloak. Don't get confused, though. This cloak is so much more than Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility. This cloak imbues the wearer with some powerful tools to add to his arsenal of supervillainy. Unfortunately for Gary, he finds out the hard way that super strength is not one of its benefits. The cloak, a character all on its own, is a snarky addition to the story. Besides giving Gary superpowers, it's a wealth of knowledge, outside of Judaism, of course.As any comic book fan will tell you, no supervillain is complete without his henchmen, and in this case, henchwench. I was so nervous to read this book. I know Charles Phipps. He's read my own books and has made it no secret that he's a superfan of the Time of Death series (much appreciated Charles!). This is first book I've ever read in the superhero genre. To say that it's way out of my comfort zone would be an understatement. So, I was apprehensive going into the read that I would not be an appropriate target audience for the content. I underestimated Charles's ability to spin an entertaining tale, and for that, I'm a bit ashamed of my original apprehension.I couldn't begin count the number of times I found myself chuckling out loud at the witty banter flying back and forth between Gary, the cloak, his wife, and the plethora of other superheroes/villains and antiheroes. Not to mention his inner dialogue, which was just as enjoyable.As its title would suggest, The Rules of Supervillainy reads almost like a manual for becoming Super. Chapter subheadings sets the readers anticipation of what's to come. With every new chapter I found myself envisioning how it set the scene in graphic form. Much like the movie, Kickass, I could see this going to the big screen.Supervillains have real families with real problems; ex-wives, the struggles of raising teenage kids, college loans, and the ever-important task of keeping their wives happy. Merciless, Gary's moniker of choice for his alter ego, is married to Mandy. It's fun to witness the progression of their marriage during Gary's transformation into Merciless and even more fun as she reveals hidden parts of her past to Gary for the first time. Like Bruce Wayne's dark spiral to becoming Batman, Gary's past defines him and drives his yearning to become a supervillain.What's great about this book is that there's no long buildup to explain how the Supers come to be. It's a world where people have powers, objects of power exist, and the war waged between good and evil is prevalent. Phipps doesn't pussyfoot around. Instead, he dives in with the (accurate) assumption that readers will accept the reality he's penned. I like that boldness, and to his credit, even with a nonbeliever like me, it was a successful risk, and one that paid in dividends. Because, let's get real, if I had to read chapters of fluff just to lead up to the meat and potatoes, It'd likely have been yawn central.It's also worth mentioning that this is the most impeccably edited book I have ever read. Normally I'd find at least minor typos missed, like it instead of if, but there was absolutely nothing I could find.Let me close with this. It was such a joy to find my name among those receiving thanks in the book's acknowledgments. Not only because I respect Charles as a writer, and friend, but also because my name is inside a book that's sure to become a smash hit. I've always known he was a hugely talented writer, but I never realized just how funny he was. Though, in hindsight, the fact that he enjoys the "poopy" humor in my books should have been my first clue. I never turn notifications off on my phone, but while reading, I did! I was so into the story I didn't want any interruptions. If that isn't a testament to The Rules of Supervillainy's awesomeness, I don't know what is.

Live in a city frequently rampaged by costumed crazies and dashing do-gooders? Check? Got snark—set to max? Check-itty, check! Snappy supervillain name…a WIP. Seeking gainful employment to fight off accumulating debt? That’s why robbing a bank is a good idea!From page one, Gary Karkofsky, a former bank teller turned criminal opportunist jumps—well, levitates—into action! Enhanced by the late Nightwalker’s cloak, Gary must stop the Malt Shop Gang from stealing his score. What’s worse, if Gary manages to take these villains down, he still has to go home to his wife and have that “Guess what, honey? I’m a supervillain” talk.That’s okay, Mandy is rational and more than capable of handling her husband’s new “life” choice. Deep down, the story is about the characters and their relationships. That’s what drew me into this book. Peel away the rich world building (Superpedia, yes!!), the amusing banter, the insane situations Gary finds himself in, and you have a conflicted man who loves his wife! No, Supervillainy is not a mushy love story, but there are layers of complexity that make these over-the-top core characters breathe.The other characters strut across the pages quite memorably. Cloak was a riot. His story arc developed nicely throughout the book, and even surprised me a few times. Henchperson Cindy, a.k.a Red Riding Hood, would give Harley Quinn a run for her money any day! I loved how Cindy arrived at her villainess name. Diabloman. He was my second favorite character, next to Gary. The whole chapter at the Night Tower! Actually, any chapter with him in it! The superhero and villain names were chuckle-worthy in their own right.The story’s pacing moved rapidly. Zombies, demi-gods, anti-heroes, and a half dozen other horrific monsters kept Gary and company busy and the scenes flying. Several boss battles lent an appropriate “epic proportions” feel to round off the book.Charles Phipps packs plenty of humor, wit, and action into this quick read. I laughed, I cheered, but most importantly, I turned pages! The chapter subheadings were humorous and built anticipation for what was to come. Micro fiction at it’s best! More books should do this!Overall, I enjoyed The Rules of Supervillainy and look forward to reading the next in this series. Count me in!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Give me moral ambiguity any day By Kindle Customer Just recently found out I am a fan of the superhero genre, heck I hadn't realized it was a genre. This is humorous only because I read Marvel, DC and Image comics when I was younger.I also find I'm a fan of the morally ambiguous protagonist, which Mr Phipps had obviously mastered. Gary is definitely supervillain as he states repeatedly. He has no problems with killing, well at least not killing certain villains and anti-heroes. He also has no problem with theft, as you find out very quickly in the first chapter.The characters are all well developed with proper back story, as any comic book fan will appreciate. I particularly love the relationship between Gary and his wife from the moment he tells her about his supervillain intentions.From Gary's treatment of his henchman and henchwench, to his constant hilarious dialog with the cloak, I could not stop laughing and cheering him. Minor revelations make for some funny moments as well.I can't wait for the next one.

About the Author William Bay is president of Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He is an accomplished guitarist and trumpet player and has performed on both instruments in a wide variety of professional settings. He is experienced as a performer and composer of music ranging from jazz and rock to the classics and sacred. He received his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his master's from the University of Missouri. Bill has received international acclaim for his innovative teaching methods, and he has authored over 200 books with sales in the millions. Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the little Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears Roebuck guitar at the age of 13 and several months later played his first "gig." (He recalled playing until his fingers were raw!) Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to play both instruments. During his teenage years Mel played with a wild assortement of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as strange as the job he landed with, in Mel's words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns mounted on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. After a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and began extolling the merits of his "wonder elixer." In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and began his professional career. He played with numerous local and traveling bands. In addition, he landed staff guitar jobs on several radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally. While Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to teach as many as 100 students a week. He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists. After the war Mel was asked to write instructional materials on guitar for GI's wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and wrote his landmark initial book titled The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. (This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System and continues to be one the finest rhythm guitar chord texts available!) His Modern Guitar Method was penned shortly thereafter. For years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay books caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since. Mel used to sell D'Angelico guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his New Yorker model but his favorite was the initial Mel Bay Model crafted as a gift for him by John D'Angelico. This famous guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cut away" model and had a slightly thinner neck. This instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method for decades. Someone once calculated that sales of guitar books written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel frequently said that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his Modern Guitar Method have alone surpassed the 7 million mark. It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instruction in this century.

However, there are a few errors in the printing. Our guitar class has found a few errors in this book, but not in the original version. Someone needs to proof-read the book before it is published!

By Jon Nesbitt Although there is no replacement for direct, hands-on experience, the benefit of an expert's knowledge and direction makes for a great substitute. An excellent "how to" guide, The Due Diligence Process Plan Handbook for Commercial Real Estate Investments is tremendously helpful in coaching-up both less experienced investors/advisors and seasoned professionals. This thorough book will help guide any real estate practitioner through simple and complicated transactions alike, preventing and minimizing costly due diligence mistakes. Whether acting as a principal or as an advisor, this book will help you be more successful in investing for your own account, or in advising your clients. Likewise, whatever your experience level, you will be better with this book as a resource because of its thoughtful and precise instruction --- it is real-life, practical application at its best, not untested theory. Finally, having known Brian as a friendly competitor and colleague for over 20 years, I recommend this book mostly because of its author. Highly Professional By cccdyle As a real estate lawyer with more years' experience than I'd care to mention, I can tell you that if you follow the instructions set out in this book, it will save you a lot of time, trouble and money! Due Diligence manuel review By maury fagan I was excited to read about the many many facets of Real Estate due diligence that the manuel described, and have never heard of such a thing existing. Nobody ever has put that much quality time and thought into a real thorough fundamental explore all the issues involved, and don't treat any lightly, as they can come back and haunt you. His questionaire on tenant interviews was great and I have already printed and copied it. Same with his example of a Lease Abstract. This type of manuel can only come from a Buyer/Owner of Commercial Real Estate, as agents typically follow the lead of their client, and I have never known a Real Estate Owner to take the time to write such a detailed account of HOW TO BUY A COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE PROPERTY properly. This should be valued at a few hundred dollars, as a new agent or buyer can become a seasoned one by reading and utilizing the stated information.Bravo Brian

The "Bookburners" series has been a bunch of short stories by some well-known authors. They've been hit-or-miss. None of them have sucked, but none of them has been exceptional, either.They're fun. They're readable. They're coming out at a rate of one per week.

About the Author Michael C. McKenna, PhD, is Thomas G. Jewell Professor of Reading in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. He has authored, coauthored, or edited more than 20 books, including Assessment for Reading Instruction, Third Edition, and over 100 articles, chapters, and technical reports on a range of literacy topics. Dr. McKenna's research has been sponsored by the National Reading Research Center and the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. He is a corecipient of the Edward B. Fry Book Award from the Literacy Research Association and the Award for Outstanding Academic Books from the American Library Association.  Katherine A. Dougherty Stahl, EdD, is Clinical Associate Professor of Reading at New York University, where she serves as Director of the Literacy Program and teaches graduate courses. In addition to teaching in public elementary school classrooms for over 25 years, Dr. Stahl has extensive experience working with struggling readers in clinical settings. Her research focuses on reading acquisition, struggling readers, and comprehension. Her books include Reading Assessment in an RTI Framework (coauthored with Michael C. McKenna). She is a recipient of the Jeanne Chall Visiting Researcher Award from Harvard University and the Teaching Excellence Award from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University.

Must-have, comprehensive text By Amazon Customer This is a comprehensive resource, filled with assessment tools to use immediately to target student need. I appreciate the connections to the CCSS and the guidance with the case study examples shared. I agree with the previous reviewer. This is a must-have text for teachers of readers.
