Beautiful and unique textured knitting By jgintx If you like textured knitting, like to be somewhat experimental in your knitting, and like to knit scarves, shawls, and hats, this book is for you. Yes it’s expensive, but with this book and my stash, I’ve got Christmas covered. I anticipate many happy hours of experimentation, discovering how different sequences pair with various yarn textures, colors, and weights, and ending up with beautiful, unique hand knits.Don’t let the technical look of the book put you off. Just look at the methods on p. 5, look at the pictures to pick a texture, and dive in. You will quickly understand the basic concept. The book is copiously illustrated with swatches that will be helpful and time-saving guides to experimentation. While the basic idea is simple, I am very happy to own the book and have it for reference.The book has illustrated patterns with that use a variety of yarns and also colorwork. It contains scarf, shawl, and hat patterns (see thumbnail photos of patterns at the end of the book.) It also gives very helpful basic information on working with color and variegated yarns. It covers how to use the method beyond rectangles, but I haven’t gotten there yet.One note on buying the book. I had it on order at Amazon for months, and figured it wasn’t available yet. Then I discovered the book was available, but at about twice the price of my Amazon order. Fortunately, I happened to spot the book in a high-end knitting shop I visited while traveling. After looking at it, I quickly decided it was worth the price to me, but it costs enough that I was hesitant to purchase sight unseen. My understanding is that the book is being sold through LYS and bookstores, rather than directly by Amazon. I understand the sentiment and applaud it, but it does make life difficult for those who don't live in a large city and want to see a book in person before spending $60.

57 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Simple idea, complex results. By steve Sequence knitting is a simple idea that gives rise to complex textures. If you understand the basic idea (knit the same sequence over and over) you can get started knitting one of the projects right away and might even wonder how someone could fill a whole book on the subject. Simple as the idea is, it turns out that a thorough exploration of all the possibilities would take a ridiculous amount of systematic swatching, so much so that "I'm so glad someone else worked this out" was my dominant thought as I paged through it for the first time.The most compelling thing about sequence knitting for me as a knitter is that it provides something between "boring knitting that I can do anywhere" and "knitting that must not be interrupted mid-row or else all is lost". It's engrossing enough that I don't want to poke my eyes out while knitting alone for long stretches, but simple and rhythmic enough that I can follow the thread of a conversation and/or complex plot line without any trouble. I see myself using it more and more with time as the idea settles into my brain and becomes one of the options I think about automatically when planning a new project.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A marvellous read - life changing By Cath Connelly A most engaging book. It opened up for me a new paradigm through which to live the Gospel message. Shaia presents four distinct questions being posed to the communities into which each gospel has been written. He argues convincingly that Matthew's gospel is written to a community facing great change after the destruction of the Temple. In this context, Shaia asks questions about how we might move through a time of change, sustained by our faith and the insights of Matthew's Jesus. Mark's gospel asks how to live in crisis. The community of Mark were, under Emperor Nero, imminently facing death. Mark writes into this situation. Shaia shows how this provides us with a guide to face our own crisis. John's gospel is of a garden of joy. Shaia explores how we learn to receive joy, explaining how it often arrives completely unexpectedly, moving us from crisis to delight almost with a blink of the eye. One of the delights of this book is the imperative Shaia presents that we must give of ourselves to bring all to oneness. This is a life of service, living a journey of travelling a path of commitment. Shaia argues that the gospel of Luke addresses this most important question - how do I move on in service? A truly great read. I have also loved the way that Alexander Shaia and his team have provided a Companion Guide to use within a group context to explore how the questions and life-path of this four-path journey of change, suffering, joy and service (which Shaia names as Quadratos) are lived out in our own lives. I have found the Guides a great companion to this book.

This book has been personally transformative and has brought new energy to my preaching.Shaia answers the question about why there are four Gospels and not 1 or more. Yes each tells the same story but in quite different ways. Each was written into a particular socio-cultural situation: Matthew to early ‘followers of the way’ immediately after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and asks ‘Where is God in change? Mark was written for Christians in Rome who were being persecuted and violently killed for their faith and asks ‘Where is God in suffering?’ Luke (with Acts) is written to growing and thriving Christian communities and asks ‘How do we mature in service?’ John was written to early Christian communities who were becoming increasingly diverse and threatened with internal conflict and develops a vision of unity by asking ‘How do we receive joy?’ The lectionary in use in the majority of Western Christianity takes us on a journey through the three synoptic Gospels using John in the high festivals of faith. In so doing we are taken through a transformative journey through change and suffering to service and joy.I have found his approach personally transforming and to bring radical new life to my preaching.Professor, The Reverend Gary D Bouma Monash University and St John’s Anglican Parish East Malvern.

A TIMELY BOOK FOR CHRISTIANITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY By Joy Ryan-Bloore I have known Alexander Shaia since he came to New Zealand and have become increasingly aware of the important place he plays at the inter-face of religion and psychology. In this book he brings together the best of scripture scholarship, psychology and Christianity in a way which is life-giving and which assists those who are looking for a deeper understanding of their own lives and the role of the great Christian tradition, in the 21st century. Recently I attended a funeral for a cousin of mine. His death was premature and as well as leaving his wife, he left two magnificent young men, both brought up in Catholicism. They were struggling with its application in their modern lives so I gave them each a copy of Alexander's book in memory of their father. Their comments indicated that they found it extremely helpful and 'why weren't we exposed to this before?". I hope many, many people find out the same thing for themselves. I also hope 'Heart and Mind' may give birth to many communities inspired to live the depth of the Christian mystery in the 21st century. By Bill Anderson IN A NUTSHELLWhen I bought this book, I somehow failed to notice it was written by a Brit. Although I love Brit humor. I do often find their novels a challenge to read. For no good reason that I can well explain, but, at any rate, I found The Secrets We Left Behind to be an exception. Read on to find out what I liked...Length: Print, 385 pages.Target Audience/Genre: This is a Mystery Suspense story.Q - What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published?A - 732.Q - How was this book obtained?A - Purchased.Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?A – Yes.Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?A – No, but it is written in UK English.Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?A – The Secrets We Left Behind is a leisure read.Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?A – Plain, Adult English, but as spoken in the UK, as opposed to North America. Among the profanities, the f-bomb is fairly commonly used.Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment? Beware, the answer here might come across as a spoiler, so I'm giving you the chance to cover your eyes and not read the answer paragraph...A - The ending is as a reader might suspect, something of a cliffhanger. I don't think this ending will really disappoint readers, though, as, by the time you get to this point, I don't see any other option.I do wish there was more dialogue in this story. The interchange between characters can be a good tool to break up, even to describe, the settings. But also, dialogue is a great tool to set up intrigue, which I think would help drive this story.I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.EXCERPTWhen I saw where Scott was staying, I felt quite hopeful about persuading him to take the money. It was a dump, one in a row of terraced red-brick houses, all with satellite dishes like ugly growths sprouting from their walls. Some of the windows were boarded up, while others framed filthy net curtains or had blankets nailed across. A broken television lay outside one house, its guts spilling out onto the pavement; the whole street was littered with empty pizza and burger boxes, beer cans, cigarette ends and dog s***. Number 89 was smaller than the others, stuck on the end as though the builders had found they had a few bricks left over and thought they might as well use them up by throwing together one more tiny house to finish off the terrace, like a makeweight. There was an overturned wheelie bin in the front yard and a scrawny-looking black cat chewing vigorously on a bone from a KFC box. The cat hissed as I approached, eyed me warily for a moment, then carried on chewing, the tip of its tail flicking sharply from side to side. There was no doorbell, so I knocked hard on the peeling front door and waited. Just as I was about to knock again, my phone pinged: Come round the back. Door open.You had to go through a shared gennel to get to the back door, which opened into the kitchen. I could immediately smell incense—patchouli; it was so evocative I almost expected Eve to appear and offer me a cup of chamomile tea. On the windowsill was a plastic tray of dried-up soil that had shrunken away from the sides, and a saucer containing a rusty key, a couple of corks and an open packet of seeds, mung beans, by the look of it. An old image flashed up: egg boxes crammed onto the kitchen windowsill in Hastings, the tender young shoots of cress, mung beans and alfalfa sprouts, bright green sparks of life pushing their way up through the soil and into the light.‘Hello?’ I called.'In here,’ came the weak reply. He looked dreadful, thinner, if that was possible, than he had last week, and his eyes seemed yet further sunken into his face. He sat in an armchair, his feet up on a wooden stool with a woven canvas top. I wondered if he’d made the stool himself; it was the sort of thing he used to do.'So, how are you?’ Usually when we asked this question, we didn’t really want to know the answer, but I did want to know now.'Had better days,’ he said. ‘Had worse, though.’ There was no colour left in his voice. My eyes strayed to the guitar that hung on the wall in one of the alcoves. I wondered when he’d last been able to sing. ‘A long time since I’ve made music,’ he said, as if reading my mind. The wallpaper in here was dark, with an old-fashioned leafy pattern, and there was a torn and faded poster bearing the words: If God gives you...Bottom Line:I like this author's skill in setting a scene. She is able to go into great detail in setting that so that all of your senses are affected. But, doing so too often can lead to a slow read if one gets too deep into that. Fortunately, the writer does not. Still, although what dialogue there is, is very well done, so I can't criticize too harshly.Four stars out of five.Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A little mystery and a little suspense that reads more like a memoir than a novel By EOD mom I truly enjoyed this story. As an adult woman with grown children, close in age to the main character and having grown up in the 1970s, I related to the memories described in Jo's story and the emotions she experiences as an adult. I liked the characters and feel they were fairly well developed. I would have liked to see more compassion for all that Jo went through, especially toward the end when all of her secrets are revealed but I think the emotional pain she suffered through without much support, is probably more realistic. My heart just ached for her as a young girl grieving and trying to find her way alone in the world and as the older, wiser successful professional who risked all the security she had gained to uncover painful hidden secrets because it was the right thing to do. Though I could pretty much predict what her secrets were from very early on in the story, there were still a few details I wasn't sure about and found myself reading way past bedtime to find out what those details were. The writing is very good and I enjoyed learning a little more about the UK through looking up the meaning to words we don't use in North America. This is one of those stories I found myself thinking about long after I finished the book. It felt more like a memoir than a novel. I would highly recommend this, especially to Mothers with grown children.

About the Author Seth Barrish is Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of The Barrow Group, a New York–based theater company and school. As a director, his credits include the award-winning shows All The Rage, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (final performance at Carnegie Hall), Sleepwalk with Me, The Tricky Part, Pentecost, Old Wicked Songs and Good, as well as dozens of productions Off-Broadway and in theaters across the United States and around the world. By Shane Peck An Actor's companion is the book for all aspiring actors and all veterans out there who need a way of working. It takes all the mystery and pain out of acting. No Method, Meisner,Stanislavski, Adler or Morris need apply! It breaks down what acting really is on a simple and doable level. Acting is about relaxation, so you have access to your talent. A Brilliant Acting Teacher By William Langan I have studied with several wonderful acting teachers, especially during my time at the Yale School of Drama, and Seth Barrish's work is as valualble as any acting teacher I know of. He is a gifted teacher and his method(or lack thereof)is laid out here in a way that is accesible and comprehensible and practical. I recommend it in the highest terms to anyone interested in the art of acting, but especially to actors looking for something to believe in and trust.

About the Author John S. Sledge is senior architectural historian for the Mobile Historic Development Commission and a member of the National Book Critics Circle. River of Knowledge By John E Richardson The Mobile River, by John Sledge, is an excellent in-depth history lesson about early days of lower Alabama, centered around the Mobile and its feeder rivers and their importance to growth of the South. I purchased a signed copy of the book at Page & Pallet independent bookstore in Fairhope, AL where the Mobile Bay, mouth of the Mobile River, is only a few blocks away. John Sedge has done his homework with the vast amount of historical facts but most importantly, has integrated these previously disconnected clues into a nicely flowing stream of connected persons (both famous and infamous), places and contiguous narrative. The multinational (American Indian, Spanish, French, British, etc) influences on the city of Mobile, Pensacola, New Orleans, and surrounding areas of the South are explored and explained. Names very familiar to most Americans (Andrew Jackson, Geronimo, etc) are plentiful but their direct involvement in the 'settlement' of southern America and the Gulf Coast in particular is mostly unknown. This book should be required reading for anyone learning about the early history of America and will be enjoyed by anyone with a curious mind.

Roberts This is a fantastic book about the history of the Mobile River and the surrounding area in what is obviously a meticulously well-researched manner. This is one of my favorite history books because Mr. Sledge is at least as good a writer as historian. He makes what could be dry material come to life with the kind of wordcraft you would expect in well-written fiction. As a lifelong resident of the area and history buff, I learned far more than I expected about Mobile. Highly recommended.

I really love bear shifter stories By Kindle Customer I really love bear shifter stories, but this one took so long to really even have Andrew shift once. Like the end of the book. The characters were ok, but the whole cliff hanger thing puts me off wanting to buy the next book. It usually winds up with that one being another cliffhanger, then I'm really angry. So I don't think I will recommend this series.

Where a women EMT helps him in a way that changes he left forever… He needs to be alone… There only one place that he knows he can go and be far away...Lake Tahoe..Abby and her friends are headed back to College taking a different route. They notice that the weather is turning fast. It starts snowing so bad that you can’t see anything ahead. One wrong turn changes theirs lives forever.Andrew need to get more wood but the storm is moving in fast. He decide to wait until later to get more on the way back in he hears something he grab his gun and start walking toward the noise. He comes across Abby and her friend.. Abby is hurt and she can’t walk so he offer to help her.The moment Abby looks in Andrew eyes she knows he is different. She see right through him. Wow love this story.

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music. I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing. What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long. I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music. I was very wrong. What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed. It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician. A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected. I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first. He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved. I stress the word slowly. A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher. Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest. I wrote this book with that in mind. During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons. I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal. My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it. I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work. Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are. Helpful and Clear Guide By Mareque Steele This is a handy companion book for those who may be working through music theory with a teacher or with a more comprehensive music theory book. The author approaches this from a different perspective than I have typically found. It is intuitive and complementary to other approaches. I really want to stress the "intuitive" part here, because that is what sets this book apart from other books that may be more in-depth, but that also you can get lost in, especially if you are a beginner to music theory. Several times I had "aha" moments in which what I had been learning elsewhere fell into place. The book is short, but it is really helpful for those who are trying to get an elementary handle on scales.

By Nefi Spoiler free review of each story:What's Fair :Great opening story that leaves you with just the right amount of dread (which is great with Halloween around the corner!). The writing was excellent. Shapiro does an exquisite job of giving the reader a connection with the narrator - which makes the climax of the story that much more jarring. My only problem is that, for my tastes, it's "message" was too subtle. Ironically, I had the opposite problem with the second story.From the Pit:This is the more imaginative story of the bunch. One of the biggest challenges of writing short story sci-fi is that you have to build a world for the reader very quickly. Shapiro accomplishes this very smoothly. It is essentially a parable about a controversial social issue. As I was reading it I couldn't help but be impressed with how clever the idea was. Unfortunately, there's a line the antagonist says that essentially blurts out the overarching analogy. Obviously, it doesn't ruin it but it was out of place in a story that I enjoyed mostly for its clever subtlety.Utopia:This was my favorite of the bunch. Almost every worldview has made its case in the Dystopian Future genre. Shapiro does an excellent job of touching on themes that put forth his worldview as offering the best critique. The conversation at the end makes me wish the author would give it the full book treatment and write his own sci-fi Road to Serfdom with this short story essentially being its last chapter.Ben Shapiro's first foray into the fiction world is an impressive debut. I'd give it a 3.9 but I had to bump it up to a 4.0 because Utopia has the distinction of depicting the most judicious use of the Pentateuch I've ever read.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable short read By Moose Three (Very) short stories. Each is a quick read but thought provoking. All three are allegorical in nature. I am not sure how to categorize "What's Fair". "From the Pit" is science fiction. "Utopia" is (in a predictable irony from the title) the story of a dystopic future.One minor problem I will mention with the KINDLE VERSION (hopefully an editor will fix this quickly so the complaint will not make sense to future readers) is that the three stories are not listed separately in the table of contents. It may be nitpicking but it makes the formating seem unprofessional when you can not just jump to the second or third story if you want to rather than paging through the ebook.I will not go into detail about the allegories, but as you guess; by either being familiar with the author or by the fact that the first several negative reviews are both obviously fake and dishonest; the lessons are conservative in nature. The author does show potential with writing fiction and I hope that he does more in the future.

I was hoping that the book would have been the size of the old comic books, but I'm not disappointed. I find that my 5-year old granddaughter enjoys have the pictures to go along with the stories. At that age, she requires a few sidebar explanations, but she sticks with me to the end of each one. She didn't think she'd like such a thick book, but the stories are short and I can keep within her attention span.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. #2 here I come. By Amazon Customer Gosh, I hate cliff hangers but somehow this writer made it worth reading. I like the characters but it just seems to be moving too slowly. It wouldn't be an issue if this was a "novel" because this would really only be about a third of the way through the book but I'd know that the next page turned would turn up something new. However, when you have a serial like this one, you want it all in one book. When you get to the end you feel like it should be the end, kinda. Well, that doesn't happen with these little shorties (no, it's not a short story it's just too short right now). I want to know what happens next and I don't want to wait (dang it.....imagine 2-year with empty juice cup...got the picture). I already have the second in the series on my Kindle and can't wait to finish this so I can get to that..so bfn

The heroine’s boyfriend disappeared and she moved with her grandmother to help her in her old age. Somebody was looking for vengeance, there was a dead body and the heroine has a protector. Interesting first part with lot of mystery, suspense and intrigue all the time. This was the first of three in the series.
