4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fun illustrated chapter book for early independent readers. By Dr Lissy This is the second critter club purchase I have made; the first was a four-in-one special at Costco. An impulse buy, I had never previously heard of this series. This book is written for children aged 5 - 9 years old. It's a simple chapter book for early independent readers. The print is large and there are numerous interesting illustrations. At the time of writing, I have a daughter in kindergarten who is reading at 3rd grade level. We have had issues sourcing books that combine suitable subject matter and content with the style and layout of the book.Thankfully, the critter club series overcomes these issues. My six year old daughter states that she likes the stories, the way the book is easy to read, and that there are friends who do fun things together. She read this after school on the day she received it, and finished it the next morning before school. Finally, the quality of the cover seems a little thinner than I expected and the paper quality is an acceptable matt. I suspect that over the 30 years since I regularly bought books, the standard of the paper material has diminished. On this occasion I am not marking the item down for this situation.Recommended! We will be buying more books in this series.(I paid full purchase price for this book.)

She picked the first one out because the cover had sparkly letters on it. She was hooked right from the start and have read all 11 books that are currently available. They teach kids about friendship and helping out animals. The stories are very appropriate for younger children who can't read yet as well. I work in a pre-school and kindergarten and have read them out loud in class. Most kids from 7ish - 9 or 10 would enjoy reading them on their own.

She's 8 and has read all of the books in the series. She can't wait for more to be released. Book was fair-priced, and shipped quickly. Very happy with our purchase.

By any measure, the law as a profession is in serious trouble. Americans' trust in lawyers is at a low, and many members of the profession wish they had chosen a different path. Law schools, with their endlessly rising tuitions, are churning out too many graduates for the jobs available. Yet despite the glut of lawyers, the United States ranks 67th (tied with Uganda) of 97 countries in access to justice and affordability of legal services. The upper echelons of the legal establishment remain heavily white and male. Most problematic of all, the professional organizations that could help remedy these concerns instead jealously protect their prerogatives, stifling necessary innovation and failing to hold practitioners accountable.Deborah Rhode's The Trouble with Lawyers is a comprehensive account of the challenges facing the American bar. She examines how the problems have affected (and originated within) law schools, firms, and governance institutions like bar associations; the impact on the justice system and access to lawyers for the poor; and the profession's underlying difficulties with diversity. She uncovers the structural problems, from the tyranny of law school rankings and billable hours to the lack of accountability and innovation built into legal governance-all of which do a disservice to lawyers, their clients, and the public. The Trouble with Lawyers is a clear call to fix a profession that has gone badly off the rails, and a source of innovative responses.

The Trouble with Lawyers, by Deborah L. Rhode

Review "The Trouble with Lawyers is well indexed and written in a lively, engaging style. Rhode intersperses anecdotes with statements of facts in a way that makes for an inviting text. Who should read this book? Everyone contemplating becoming a lawyer, college prelaw placement advisers, law school librarians and placement officers, and anyone interested in legal ethics and the practicalities of the legal profession should read The Trouble with Lawyers." -Elizabeth A. Greenfield, Law Library Journal

"This important book should be widely read and could lay the foundation for a significant reform agenda. Highly recommended." -J. A. Pierceson, University of Illinois at Springfield, Choice

"Rhode's interesting book The Trouble with Lawyers represents a comprehensive account of the challenges which face the American Bar and will be of great interest to English Counsel. This is an important book at an important time for the legal profession both here and abroad so do read it carefully as it could affect your own future. Thank you Deborah for a great contribution to the continuing debate." Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor, Richmond Green Chambers

"[An] honest, well researched account of the spectre of decreasing public access to justice that is resulting, inter alia, from an unsustainably increasing number of law schools, law students, and lawyers in the United States." -Magdalene D'Silva, The Modern Law Review

About the Author Deborah L. Rhode is the Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law, the director of the Center on the Legal Profession, and the director of the Program in Law and Social Entrepreneurship at Stanford University. She was the founding president of the International Association of Legal Ethics, a president of the Association of American Law Schools, a chair of the American Bar Association's Commission on Women in the Profession, the founding director of Stanford's Center on Ethics, and a former trustee of Yale University. A Must-Read for Anyone Considering Law School By Shann Reviews I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.I believe that anyone thinking about applying to Law School seriously needs to read The Trouble with Lawyers before they truly make their decision. Deborah Rhode paints a very dim picture of the legal field, so much so that if every Pre-Law student read this book, there may be no one showing up to take the June LSATs. However, as students, we are given rose colored glasses by our professors and told that everything is fine and we are guaranteed success, even in this economy, when that is just not the truth. The Trouble with Lawyers is the balance that is sorely needed to call out the Elephant in the Room and acknowledge that 2015 is not the same world as 2005. It is filled with statistics and data backed up with proof that talks about the problems faces by lawyers, especially those who are newly entering the field. For years, I was told that being a lawyer is a guarantee to becoming wealthy, and that is no longer the case. As a Jurisprudence student myself, and as a woman, I am really glad to have read this book before I dove into getting myself in even more debt.If it is your life dream to be a lawyer, do not be afraid that this book will change your mind. If you truly want to be a lawyer, do it. Just don't show up to a gun battle with a plastic sword. Reading The Trouble with Lawyers will only prepare you for the worst, should it ever happen. This book is NOT for a casual reader. You will end up staring blankly at the pages, asking yourself why you care. For anyone who is already a lawyer, a lot of what is in this book this may not be news to you, because you're living it. However, it may broaden your perspective to the issues that exist in the field, and could possibly motivate you to try and make a change.

Abrams The Trouble With Lawyers is an thorough and probative analysis of a profession that has become a hyper-competitive business, far different from what it was, and far less satisfying and meaningful to those who practice law. Anyone considering applying to law school should first read this book to get an accurate picture of the state of the profession and what realistic career paths may be available, and those who have practiced should read this book for a thoughtful and accurate consideration of the legal business, and what might be done to reclaim the dignity and honor of the profession. Rhode's research is comprehensive, her analysis is penetrating and considers varying perspectives of the issue, her writing is compelling, and her ideas are original and provoke thought and action. From my perspective as a partner in a big law firm for 35 years, this book is outstanding, and I highly recommend it.

HIGHLY OPINIONATED, OF COURSE AND DELICIOUSLY AMERICAN By Phillip Taylor MBE HIGHLY OPINIONATED, OF COURSE AND DELICIOUSLY AMERICANWITH SOMETHING WE BRITS WOULD CERTAINLY TAKE ISSUE WITH: OR WOULD WE!An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersLawyers can be a troublesome bunch of professionals although that is the nature of our work! So when we read “The Trouble with Lawyers” by Deborah Rhode we realized that Oxford University Press has published another most useful statement on the direction lawyers might take for the future because what happens in America can often affect us here and vice versa.Certainly the legal profession in England and Wales is going through a further transition of its own as digitalization takes over many tasks with the arrival of artificial intelligence so a number of important legal practice management books have started appearing questioning our future, long term survival so we must take it more seriously and as a priority! And that is where Deborah Rhode comes in. By any measure, the law as a profession could be considered to be in serious trouble at present to some, and to others it could be going through another transitional period although the American position is reviewed with great clarity in this most interesting, and potentially alarming book, delightfully entitled “The Trouble with Lawyers” which is an intriguing title to set the mind thinking. It is unfortunately the case that an American’s trust in his or her lawyer is at a serious low point, and many members of the profession are suggesting that they wish they had chosen a different path. The same, of course, could be said for both doctors and lawyers here in the UK although the skills of a doctor are much more readily transferable than those of the lawyer on the international stage. To compound the problem, law schools, with their continually rising fees both here and elsewhere, are churning out too many graduates for the jobs available but that is the same in other fields critics would point out. Yet despite the over-subscribed number of lawyers, the USA ranks 67th (tied with Uganda) out of 97 countries with what is termed “access to justice and affordability of legal services” and we dare not speculate on the UK’s position. The higher echelons of the legal establishment remain heavily white and male in many countries even though some substantial efforts have been introduced in order to encourage diversity, especially here with the Bar Council. And, as Rhode postulates, “most problematic of all, the professional bodies that could help alleviate these concerns instead (allegedly) jealously protect their prerogatives, stifling necessary innovation and failing to hold practitioners accountable”.Rhode's interesting book “The Trouble with Lawyers” represents a comprehensive account of the challenges which face the American Bar and will be of great interest to English Counsel. She examines how the problems have affected (and originated within) law schools, firms, and governance institutions like the Bar associations; the impact on the justice system and access to lawyers for the poor; and the profession's underlying difficulties with diversity which, frankly, we all have to face in the western world.Rhodes describes and uncovers the structural problems, from “the tyranny of law school rankings and billable hours to the lack of accountability and innovation built into legal governance-all of which do a disservice to lawyers, their clients, and the public”... nicely put! Yes, it’s correct to say that “The Trouble with Lawyers” represents a clear call to fix a profession that has gone badly off the rails, and a source of innovative responses. This is an important book at an important time for the legal profession both here and abroad so do read it carefully as it could affect your own future! Thank you Deborah for a great contribution to the continuing debate!

This is a great resource that I have been using in small guided reading groups to teach close reading and text coding or marking. Each passage focuses on specific skills for the text marking such as Main Idea, Compare/Contrast, and Cause and Effect. The questions that go along with the text reinforces vocabulary, using context clues, and other additional "evidence based" skills. The passages are challenging but grade appropriate. I have shared it with others who are enjoy using it too. I highly recommend this book.

It is not a story, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's simply an 108 page beginning. If you want to know the way the story turns out, you have to buy the next book. Will you know then? I don't know. Perhaps you will only get more beginning, and maybe a little of the middle. I won't be reading anything else by this author. He's tricked me once. He won't trick me again.

The Enchanted Files: Diary of a Mad Brownie, by Bruce Coville

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Angus Cairns is a young brownie at only 150 years old. As a magical being, he is a subject of the Queen of Shadows, who rules the Enchanted Realm. When the old woman to whom Angus is bound passes away, the binding curse from the queen forces Angus to leave his native Scotland to live and serve in an unknown territory—America. Angus's ancestors were obligated by the curse to the McGonagall family until what was taken from the queen is returned. The curse further stipulates that all male McGonagalls will become obsessed with poetry that "shall be like the braying of asses," sure to bring embarrassment and misery. After a harrowing journey, Angus arrives at his new and strange home and finds the girl to whom he is bound, 11-year-old Alex Carhart. Not only is she a messy, disorganized child—the antithesis of brownie behavior—but there is also a brother, a younger sister, and a cat in the house. Reluctantly at first, Angus and Alex come to respect and even believe in each other. Together they break the curse, which has started to have devastating (and very funny) effects on Alex's brother and father, the cursed McGonagall male descendants. The story unfolds through Angus's diary, Alex's journal, and a host of other communiques in the form of letters, text messages, and notes. Each maintains its own cadence and the sense that magical and human worlds are meeting. The result is a humorous, quick-paced, and engaging tale. Human and magical characters are likable with characteristics that readers will recognize. VERDICT This is a fresh and fast tale that is sure to elevate the standing of brownies, goblins, and other magical beings.—Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia Public Library

Review "A knee-slapper."—Kirkus Reviews* "It’s not easy to merge such disparate elements as traditional Scottish lore and modern American life, but Coville brings it off with wit, style, and respect. The first volume of the Enchanted Files series is smart, amusing, and a lot of fun" —Booklist (starred review)

Therefore, I will list the flaws first.#1-I rate this as #1, because it is the most important. This is a children's book. The MC's age is 11. This means children 8 (and probably younger) will read this book. And yet: Before the first third of the book was over, it had used, "arse", "hell", the Lord's name in vain, discussed how Angus (the brownie), was looking at a selkie in her human form completely naked (even if he didn't find it interesting after 150 years, he still watched her), had the child discuss how she knew about sex because it was obviously impossible for her younger sister to "have just happened", and thinks her teacher's husband is a hottie (what 11 yo thinks a 30yo man is hot!?).#2-Bad grammar. It's "if it were", not "if it was" (this was not in dialogue, and occurred several times), apparently "have mowed" is acceptable, so I'll let that go (must be a regional thing), and it's "none were", not "none was". These should have been corrected, but much like the inappropriate actions, were only found in the first third of the book.#3-Repetition. The latter third of the book had its own set of problems. Several sentences were repeated, like in the same paragraph even. This happened several times.#4-The book is written in a jumpy format. It goes: Angus's journal entry, letter to parents from teacher, child's journal entry, Angus's journal entry, letter to family from vet, letter to parents from teacher, child's journal entry, etc. While this is a fun and interesting format, it is confusing, especially at the beginning. A child would have a hard time following it I fear. It would have been better if the family information had been given at a later date, you know, like after the reader actually knows they exist, and maybe even the role they play in the story. It would have also been better to have bigger chunks instead of hopping around all the time. As it is now, why do I care how a vet feels about a cat from a family I know nothing about, not even their names? It's instinctual to skip those parts until they actually matter. And now for the good parts.#1-The characters were very well thought out and played. They each had their own personalities and problems, and it showed.#2-I especially loved how we see Native American fantasy. That is so often skipped over in the fantasy section, and I really enjoyed it.Final thought-I would not recommend this book to any child for the #1 reason of my flaw section. However, an adult will probably enjoy it a great deal.

What, with people moving across whole continents, living in such large houses and having so many things to keep organized. Keeping house for lonely old Sarah in the Old Country is a breeze compared to trekking across an ocean on selkie-back and cleaning up after the messiest girl in North America. And that’s only the beginning of the curse. This story is told in diary format, supplemented by other written media such as letters and text exchanges. Angus Cairns the Brownie has a bit of a temper problem and his friend thought it would be helpful for him to write about his frustrations. Angus encounters many such frustrations in his journey to meet and live with Alex Carhart, youngest female descendant of age of the McGonagall line to whom he is bound via his father’s curse. Alex, it turns out, has her own problem – messiness. Except that she doesn’t think it’s a problem, which all but guarantees a collision course between her and the Brownie with the temper. But that’s not the worst part of the curse. The curse itself really affects the males of the household – in this case, Alex’s father and brother, by turning them into relentlessly bad poets. That might not sound like such a bad thing, but, well, you’ll have to read the story. Angus feels quite bad about inflicting his curse on this family, but then, it’s not really his fault. If only there were something he could do about it….This is not a bad book, but it’s not one of my favorites. The characters are decent and likable (especially the younger sister, Destiny), but the book lacks sufficient action or humor to keep it really engaging. There are some mildly amusing parts – and one brief part I’ll admit I did laugh out loud – as well as a quest of sorts, but it doesn’t really add up to a really good story, especially by Bruce Coville standards. The ending feels a bit rushed – the quest itself doesn’t even start until near the end of the book. As the pages left to be read dwindle in number and the threads still have yet to be tied up, we start to wonder if maybe this is going to be a Book I, but everything does, in fact, get resolved within this volume (although apparently there are to be other Brownie adventures in the series, not that I’m likely to read them). This book is aimed at tweens and younger teens and there’s nothing really objectionable for that audience, but I still can’t quite work up a recommendation for the book. With so many other wonderful youth books available, this one just doesn’t make the list.

By delicateflower152 When you find yourself smiling as you read the authors’ introductory pages, you realize you have found something special. “Diary of a Mad Brownie” is one such book. Filled with droll humor and several gentle reminders about the importance of imagination, of keeping promises, and of family, Bruce Coville’s latest novel is a treat for readers of any age.A curse on his family line binds Brownie Angus Cairns to the youngest female, over the age of ten, of the McGonagall line. The curse continues until a male of the McGonagall line returns the Queen of Shadows’ daughter, the Princess of Sunshine, to the Enchanted Realm. When Sarah McGonagall Angus’ most recent human charge dies, Angus must make the journey, via selkie, to America where he will serve Alex Carhart. When Alex discovers Angus in her room, the fun begins as the two try to keep Angus’ presence a secret and as they slowly become friends.Bruce Coville presents Angus’ story in the form of diary and journal entries – the former by Angus and the latter by Alex - documents from the Enchanted Realm, and letters from other supporting characters that help to flesh out the personalities of the Carhart family. Both Angus’ diary and Alex’s journal entries are written in the first person. This helps develop the two characters in the reader’s imagination and creates a more personal touch with respect to their writing. Angus tends to write as if he were speaking with a Scottish burr – something I found charming, but something that younger readers might find unusual. The use of documents from the Enchanted Realm fills in Angus’ story and completes the picture of this Brownie as someone who is a risk taker. The letters from Alex’s teacher and from her younger sister Destiny’s teacher help paint portraits of the two girls.“Diary of a Mad Brownie” is easy to read and is very appropriate for any age reader – or listener. The humor is gentle – some might find it unsophisticated – and quite charming. The characters are fun and the situations in which they find themselves become very funny. If you want to read a book that will make you smile – and sometimes laugh aloud – then I recommend you read Bruce Coville’s “Diary of a Mad Brownie”. You will not regret it!

All markers and some gel pens with leak through this paper so place a piece of paper under the page you are coloring to prevent damage to the next illustrations.3. You will find intricately detailed creatures from the sea, and half of them have a whimsical touch creating cute creatures for you to color in Markers, Gel Pens, Colored pencils, even crayons for many.4. 3 of the pictures are oriented facing toward the binding; I found these a bit odd to color.

The standard handbook on law affecting deaf and hard of hearing people has been completely rewritten and updated. The sixth edition of Legal Rights: The Guide for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People meticulously describes those statutes that prohibit discrimination against deaf and hard of hearing people, and any others with physical challenges. Written in easy-to-understand language, the new edition describes the core legislation and laws and their critical importance since their inception: The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).        The new Legal Rights also explains the significant amendments to these laws, including the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) and new regulations to its Title II concerning public entities and Title III pertaining to public accommodations and commercial facilities. The reauthorization of IDEA expanded the No Child Left Behind Act requirement for highly qualified teachers to all students with disabilities. This new edition also tracks the trend of passing a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children’s Bill of Rights in a growing number of state legislatures.        This completely new resource also delineates new legislation such as the Twenty-First Century Communications Video and Accessibility Act, which ensures access to the newest communications technology for deaf and hard of hearing people. Legal Rights also includes information on the use of interpreters in the legal system, securing its position as the most comprehensive reference of legal information for deaf and hard of hearing people now available.

A MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE "I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday."When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

Amazon.com Review A Look Inside I Am Malala Girls attending Malala’s school in Pakistan. The Headmistress of Malala’s school. The seat that Malala sat in. A beautiful view of the Swat valley, where Malala is from.

Review "The touching story will not only inform you of changing conditions in Pakistan, but inspire your rebellious spirit."―Matthew Love, Time Out New York"Ms. Yousafzai has single-handedly turned the issue of the right of girls-and all children-to be educated into headline news. And she is a figure worth hearing."―Isabel Berwick, The Financial Times"Wise beyond her years...."―Annie Gowen, Marie Claire"Riveting.... Co-written with Christina Lamb, a veteran British journalist who has an evident passion for Pakistan and can render its complicated history with pristine clarity, this is a book that should be read not only for its vivid drama but for its urgent message about the untapped power of girls.... It is difficult to imagine a chronicle of a war more moving, apart from perhaps the diary of Anne Frank. With the essential difference that we lost that girl, and by some miracle, we still have this one."―Marie Arana, Washington Post"Remarkable...a must-read, first-person account of her journey through global terrorism, her brave, encouraging parents, and her own fight for girls' education."―MarieClaire.com"The victory of Malala Yousafzai is that she's just getting started."―Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon"Briskly written but full of arresting detail.... Striking [and] surprising..."―Jill Lawless, Associated Press"Ms. Yousafzai's stature as a symbol of peace and bravery has been established across the world..."―Salman Masood, The New York Times"Not only has Malala Yousafzai become an international symbol of inspiration and bravery, but her survival instilled educators with courage-and is slowly helping make Pakistani schools safer."―Nick Schifrin, ABC.com"For a teenage girl in a distant corner of the globe to spark life into this movement-against overwhelming odds-is truly extraordinary. The world must not allow Malala's message to die."―Dallas Morning News"Her powerful message remains undiluted."―Tina Jordan, Entertainment Weekly"In simple, clear writing, I AM MALALA gives a rare and moving first-person glance into what it's like to be a teenager in a country seized by extremists who stand against the basic freedoms you believe in."―Krystin Arneson, Bustle"Malala matters....In her modesty and dignity, she should be Islam's beloved daughter, her journey a return to the early promise of Muslim modernism."―Fouad Ajami, New York Post"Incredibly inspirational.... Malala is intelligent and fiery with dreams of changing the world, but the book has the added benefit of being a true story that is easily interwoven with important global issues such as human rights, development, education, and peace.... If there is one thing that I AM MALALA should teach us, it is to look beyond Manichean narratives of good and evil. It is important to applaud Malala for the awareness she has built around important issues like education for young women."―Cristina Maza, PolicyMic"Riveting.... [Malala's] clear voice [is] beautifully captured by Lamb."―Rafia Zakaria, Ms. Magazine"A gripping story.... What makes this book so important is not just the universal value of Malala's cause.... It's the relevance of her story to one of the most vexing security questions in today's crazy world...."―Trudy Rubin, Philadelphia Inquirer"An inspiring, clearly written memoir that offers a glimpse of an extraordinary young woman and the confounding world from which she comes."―Karen Sandstrom, Cleveland Plain Dealer"One hears some ghosts of Anne Frank in reading I AM MALALA, the flightiness, effervescence and, well...girlishness of an adolescent girl flung once again the indifferent violence of inhuman men, like flowers hurled against a stone wall."―Leonard Pitts Jr., Miami Herald"An eye-opener in the fight for girls' education equality."―More"The voice that beams, 'I am Malala' is the voice that continues to meet the assassin's challenge. It is the voice of a courageous campaigner who still fights for girls' education. The voice of an icon who may one day be able to return to her country, but who even from afar symbolizes its noblest cause."―Shehryar Fazli, Los Angeles Review of Books"A story for each and every girl who chooses to break societal taboos, challenge the clergy, declare war against illiteracy and believe in the power of the pen."―Daud Khattak, Newark Star Ledger"[A] vivid autobiography.... Yousafzai possesses an eloquence beyond her years, but her touching asides drive home the fact that she's also very much a 16-year-old girl.... Captivating and surprisingly personal."―Erika W. Smith, Bust"Like millions around the world, I draw strength from brave Malala's example.... Malala is a testament that women everywhere will not be intimidated into silence. We will make our voices heard."―Gabrielle Giffords, Time magazine's "TIME 100""Compelling. It's a brave girl's tale in an unsafe country, and it reveals her fierce determination to make the world a better place."―Michael Taube, Washington Times"How did Yousafzai have the courage, at 15, to stand up to the Taliban in her native Pakistan? Her memoir, written less than a year after she nearly died for her efforts, will open your eyes."―People

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady By Cynthia Mujahid I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD By The Literacy Advocate The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid. This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

The goal of this short book is to provide some basic education and information about guns. Let’s start by asking, what is a gun? The dictionary definition of “gun” is pretty simple and straightforward: “a weapon consisting of a tube, with mechanical attachments, from which projectiles are shot by the force of an explosive.” Really? That’s it? A tube with projectiles coming out of it? Sounds like a cannon, doesn’t it? But it’s more than that! Guns have been in American homes since the founding of the country and continue to be used today. What are some specific uses for a gun? For millenia man has been fascinated with the idea of launching a projectile at animals--or men of opposing points of view--and has developed more efficient ways of doing so.The invention of gunpowder led to the development of firearms. Gunpowder first appeared in use in China over a thousand years ago, but was used primarily in firecrackers and only sparingly in weapons for military use. Dissemination of the knowledge of gunpowder manufacture to Europe in the 14th century did not at first lead to military usage. However, once the effectiveness of projectiles impelled by the force of gunpowder against both the armor of knight-soldiers and fortifications was known, the use of firearms proliferated rapidly. This guide will give you an overview of the different type of guns available, including rifles and shotguns. Afterr reading this book, you will have a basic knowledge that will help you with guns mastery.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Helpful, but short By Matt Quarte Read the entire thing in about 15 minutes. Helpful, but left a lot out.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Poorly written and too basic. By iamLarry My impression of this book is that someone decided to sit down one afternoon and write a book about guns for beginners. About an hour later they were done. Appears that not much thought went into this book. It is so basic as to leave out a lot of information even beginners would and should be introduced to. If you're really wanting to learn about guns, there are far better introductory books out there than this one.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. I LOVED this book By Kathy Cilley Where to begin?? Oh, right. I received this as an ARC for an honest review and honest is what I do. It is my middle name. Weird parents. If you have never read any of Erica Stevens' books ( and why is my question, WHY?? ) grab them , summer is here so reading time begins in earnest and go! I must say first off, I LOVED this book. The characters feel like people you could meet out on the streets and you have a heads up on them by Erica's writing. Very honest and fully fleshed out.Julian, Julian.....wait where was I? Oh yes, Julian, what a man, vampire, hunk. Gorgeous, hunky ( yes it is a word ) manly, you just want to get lost in him. He will take care of you or kill for you. What more is there? And Quinn, vamp and a few other things. ( Spoilers dear readers, never give them. ) She is a tough, caring, somewhat damaged gal. But it works for her and to keep her safe. And she has a special power, great power, that you need to read the book to find out about. There are fighting, loving, and romance scenes in this book. No sex scenes. I actually liked that part. But hopefully there will be mild sex scenes in the next books. ( Hey I am woman, hear me roar for mild sex scenes. )If I could give more stars I would. But 5 is all I am allowed. BUY this book, grab some iced tea, a rum runner, beer and a comfy chair and lose yourself for a while. Oh, you are welcome. Enjoy!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Another engaging book from Erica Stevens! By llg115 We met Julian in the Kindred Series and witnessed his transformation from a ruthless, deadly vampire, to someone worth giving a second chance. It's been a few years and Julian is still working with the Hunters and Guardians as they try to come back from near extinction. It is during one of these trips to find Hunters that he meets Quinn.Quinn is a very unique vampire and one who has tried hard to live inconspicuously among humans. She's haunted by a terrifying and heartbreaking past and doesn't let anyone get too close. She didn't count on Julian, though, and his very assertive personality. When a new threat presents itself, Quinn and Julian must work together to eradicate it. They come to rely on each other more and develop feelings for one another. They'll need that support as the prophesied threat to Quinn becomes clearer. The book doesn't end on a cliff-hanger per se, but there will definitely be more Julian and Quinn in the future. It's one of those endings I can be comfortable with rather than frustrated that I have to wait for more.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. great start to a new series!!! By clarice For those of you who have read the Kindred Series, Julian now has his own series!! I haven't read every single book in that series and I remember not being terribly attached to this character from what I did read, however, things have definitely changed. I read this book, which happens after the Kindred Series timeline-wise., and Julian has really grown on me. In fact, this was a great book! Even if you haven't read any of Erica Stevens's books, pick this one up. If you like the vampire and paranormal genre, try it out! Julian is a complicated, cranky vampire who is hanging out with a bunch of Hunters and Guardians in Frost Burn. Now most vampires would avoid them, but Julian has changed and decided to help the world instead of doing what many others have by going out and bleeding people dry. While he is out and about with his friends, he meets Quinn. She has been trying to survive as a vampire for the past 6 years and avoid as many other vampires as much as possible, but she will do what she must to keep the town she lives in safe. After becoming a vampire when the rest of her family was decimated, she doesn't trust vampires much, and that includes Julian. Even though the two are very attracted to each other, there are threats looming on the horizon. Quinn has some real power to her and there are those who are going to come looking for her.
