Bouchey This was a very interesting book about social media and how it effects our lives. Its starts at the beginning of social media, with a section on frequently asked questions and propaganda. This book follows how social media has evolved over the years and how its changed since the #hashtag first made an appearance. We learn how powerful it really is for all of us and our everyday lives. It was a very interesting read, I would recommend it to anyone who uses social media for blogging or just for connecting with family and keep up with world events.I received this book for free for my honest review, all options are my own.

By Altrdperception I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion. This book on Social Media was actually a good read! It took me the whole day,but I would say you get more than crash course of info. It will take you through the good and bad of what social media can and does do for us nowadays, compared to how little it did in the past. Even just 5 years ago, it has grown immensely. Facebook have been the center stone of everyone's world. It's how we get things done, how we get information out to a huge amount of people in a short time. We rely on it for everything and we would definitely be lost if it were suddenly to vanish. It even points out what certain government agencies are with your information and how they can easily spy on you using your social media. It's for great for kids to be informed about "Hacktivists" and shows ways to inform children and adults how to prevent from becoming an online embarrassing statistic. It covers the past to now and how much has changed. They also have a great "Did you know" section with lots of tid bits of facts I bet you didn't know! Great read and great for kids and adults alike.

Practically everyone has either a Twitter account, Facebook, Instagram, tumblr, or other social media account. It's the "in" thing right now. I have every one of those and others.Although so many people use social media in one way or another, not everyone realizes just how powerful social media is today. Companies can lose a ton of buyers if they receive even just a handful of bad reviews. People from one side of the world can read what people on the completely other end of the world think about products, celebrities, restaurants....the list is never-ending. The internet is so huge and is only getting bigger. Social media can be used for both good and bad.I like this book a lot because it tells people who are completely unaware , although that's a bit hard these days, all about the impact social media has. It's an eye opening book for so many people out there, I think especially for older generations. I will be sharing this book with the older people in my family who don't believe that social media can be so powerful. Very informative book, in my opinion.I received this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

The Weight of Sin By Simon Vincent Written in a highly visual style, The Weight of Sin is the story of four people. A man and woman from totally different countries and cultures, a jilted wife who refuses to forgive and becomes an FBI agent, and a priest with a sinful past who brings faith and healing to those in need. A disillusioned young man, Alexander Garcia begins a life of crime after his beloved father is murdered and his mother kills herself. Years later, he visits their family home, terrorizes the new occupants, and leaves his wife, disappearing into a world of conspiracy and terrorism. Illapa (in the mold of Lisbeth Salander) a young Peruvian woman, marches through the Andes with a group of “Shining Path” guerrillas. She excels as a crack terrorist. She finds and comforts her dying father. Her story is revealed in the words of her father. He is an army colonel who fell in love with an Incan princess and kidnaps her, ultimately marrying her. Politics and realities of power force him to abandon his family in the Andes. The abandoned mother and daughter languish in despair and poverty, drawing the young girl into the peasants’ struggle for a better life. A visit to her dying grandfather and the ancient city of Machu Picchu connects her to her past answers many questions about her family and her race and who she is. Meanwhile back in America Alexander joins a terrorist revolutionary group and becomes involved in horrific acts: bombing the Disney Castle, sinking an oil freighter in Venezuela and an assassination attempt on the President. Guilt weighs heavily on his mind as he struggles with his new life; he saves the life of the President. His life is a constant struggle to do right and still fight for a cause. Ultimately he must flee to save his life. He faces the consequences of his brutal past, a harrowing secret is revealed and he begins a new journey of awareness, faith, and love in the mountains of South America. In this journey he is joined by Illapa, who is also forced to flee for her life. In the highlands they find each other and redemption with the help of a Priest. Fr. Crewes’ painful and sinful past lead him to this place and time for the purpose of saving his fellow man, as he was saved. Linda Garcia-Vitale, abandoned wife and newly-minted FBI agent, pursues her target zealously. When she finds him a totally different person, she has to make a difficult decision. The story and the lives of the four people come into final focus in the Epilogue.

Reviews by A Latina Book Club By Livin' la vida Latina Reviewed by: MaraReview: This book centers on two themes: Havana and the military.Author has a soulful voice and fine craftsmanship, however, the story didn't suit my interests. I thought it was too complex and had too many characters. I think it would’ve been better if the story focused on one or two characters rather than four. Sometimes it’s better to keep it simple.Of course, behind the four characters is the land of Cuba, which I felt was sort’ve a character in itself with the lush scenery and vivid descriptions. But, again, I just wasn’t enraptured by the tale.I'm sure this would be good for history and political buffs.

Human Action—a treatise on laissez-faire capitalism by Ludwig von Mises—is a historically important and classic publication on economics, and yet it can be an intimidating work due to its length and formal style. Choice: Cooperation, Enterprise, and Human Action, however, skillfully relays the main insights from Human Action in a style that will resonate with modern readers. The book assumes no prior knowledge in economics or other fields, and, when necessary, it provides the historical and scholarly context necessary to explain the contribution Mises makes on a particular issue. To faithfully reproduce the material in Human Action, this work mirrors its basic structure, providing readers with an enjoyable and educational introduction to the life’s work of one of history’s most important economists.

Dr. Murphy's book is clear and concise and I was able to read it cover to cover without giving up. I look forward to diving back into it again to make things stick. Who knows, but I think Dr. Murphy may have given me ammo to attack the Mises' magnum opus again.

Engaging Read for Any Age By Marja Coons-Torn What a joy that David Pandolfe has issued the Streetlights Like Fireworks trilogy as a box set just in time for the gift-giving season. Though aimed at the young adult audience, these novels will engage adults as well. I loved all three!Jack and Lauren are the kind of young adults that you'd like to know. They connect because each has a psychic gift, and from there they are off on a series of adventures. But their conection is deeper. You'll enjoy watching their relationship grow right along with the mysteries they are all about solving. This triology is fun. That may be the best thing I can say. And David Pandolfe is an excellent writer. Definitely worth your time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By Chic From the first chapter the reader is yanked into the action, Jack's psychic "flash" startling. I was riveted, and didn't set the book down until I'd finished it.I'm a devoted fan of David Pandolfe's imaginative and fascinating books. This is the ideal way to enjoy the "Streetlights" story, no waiting to continue with Jack and Lauren's adventure.Going on the journey of discovery with Lauren and Jack is just fun. The dialogue between them is so entertaining. They're enormously likeable, and at the end of this first book, my heart broke over the difficulties their future holds for them. I couldn't wait for the next book!In "The Dragonfly Season" the adventure of Lauren and Jack continues, this time it's Lauren's visions initiating the action. The seemingly random psychic connection is puzzling. Lauren and Jack go off again, compelled by the visions to find the source, save the child. This time there's greater personal risk, and ultimately a greater cost.In "Distance", Jack and Lauren again tackle mysteries that their visions force on them. This is a darker story, but it's handled with sensitivity and taste.Jack and Lauren are normal people, whose abilities are a natural extension of human possibility. We all harbour this capability, it's Jack's and Lauren's compassion and willingness to open themselves to the risks inherent in following these flashes of clarity that sets them apart.Once you've finished this series, treat yourself to the "Jump When Ready" series. Different characters, different situations, utterly fascinating, charming, imaginative.

These books sing with realism, even though part of the storyline is about psychic abilities. The trio of stories hang together like snapshots of a trip your friends tell you about after they came home, not those boring slideshows your parents used to subject their friends to, but an adventure you wish you could have shared. Luckily for us, we -can- share them.I enjoyed these books about Jack and Lauren because the story is revealed to us in layers, with so much skill that we also have flashes of insight, much like our young protagonists. Pandolfe has created a world that is rooted in today, with technology of the Millenia and musical references that are up to the minute. Even though their psychic abilities drive the bus, so to speak, these stories are completely believable. I grew to love this pair and eagerly awaited each successive novel.Buy the box set. One you read Streetlights Like Fireworks, you are going to want to read them all anyway, so save yourself the trouble and get them all at once.I purchased this as a gift, as I already have the individual books.

His son, Prince Parrin, is afflicted with a rather nasty curse that slaughters, maims, or brutally attacks any woman with whom he so much as flirts. After the rumour that sweeps around the kingdom, promising that any woman breaking the ‘curse’ will be eligible to marry the prince, there is no shortage of willing volunteers. Unfortunately, there is also no shortage of bodies piling up. Markon needs to do something, but what? Can a visiting enchantress from Avernse help, or is she simply another accident waiting to happen? And will Markon be able to give her up to his son if she does break the curse? Twelve Days of Faery is the first novella in the Shards Of A Broken Sword novella trilogy.

First off, standing ovation for a story told from the male POV (King Markon, who is not young, dashing, and full of passion, but actually turns out to be older, able to dash quite fast upon demand, and both practical and passionate) that also stars an extremely clever, fast-thinking and capable young-ish woman (enchantress!) who really, really carries the story. Oh my goodness, I *loved* Althea. Talk about smart, spunky, and doesn't do random dumb things to forward the plot. She comes from a scarred past, but she's impressively resilient and I so, so want to read more about her. Sadly, although this is a series, it looks like each book features a different set of characters. However, since our characters do retrieve a shard of two of the broken sword which the series must take its name from, I hold out hope that at some point there will be a massive character reunion and I'll at least get to see Markon and Althea one last time.Okay, sorry, I'll focus on the story itself. So, the love interests of Prince Parrin have been dropping like flies, and good old dad, King Markon, has spent the last two years trying to find someone or something that can break the curse on his son. With a cursed heir, the succession of the crown is in jeopardy. Also, he feels pretty bad for his son. And really awful about all the girls who've suffered because of him. Just as Markon is deciding to call it quits, declare another heir, and--well, he still doesn't want to wall Parrin off from the world--Althea shows up to break the curse. Markon does not precisely give her permission to make the attempt, but Althea goes right ahead and works her way into the thick of things before he knows what to expect. But everything she does, however risky, is a considered risk, and she typically has a trick up her sleeve to handle it. Markon finds himself tagging along as they track down the source of the magical "curse" which seems to have something to do with fae magic... But why would the fae be involved? Is it really the fae or someone who has a hold on them? And what would that hold be?This story took so many twists and turns, even though I figure out the arch villains halfway through, the how and the why kept me guessing. I'll admit to wishing one of the baddies, a bit lower down on the totem pole but of great import, had had a bit more depth and intelligence to her. I tend to find the vehement, angry, self-serving villains not quite so persuasive. Then again, she was a tool for others, so I suppose that works. Depth and intelligence would not have made her a particularly good tool. Note also that this is somewhat light-hearted in the sense that, while dark stuff happens, this book is not filled with deep themes and emotional turmoil. It's fast, and fun, and I laughed out loud at least twice. This is my first by Ms. Gingell, but I immediately pre-ordered the next book in the series when I finished it. How does this book not have more ratings and reviews? I can admit that I wasn't drawn in by the cover (nope) and the title made me wonder if this was a spin-off of a Christmas story (nope), but I have never been more glad that I actually read the blurb and then the sample. Go get this story now! You won't regret it.Overall, a solid 4.5 stars.

I very much enjoyed her attitude. She is very smart and likable. She is going to break this curse, and is confident that she won't be its next victim. The king is not so sure.King Markon is a king just trying to hold on to his kingdom and keep the peace. That is hard to do when unfortunate accidents keep happening around the prince. He is a very well written character. Ms. Gingell wrote him to be so relatable in a fantastic situation. The story takes place over twelve days, and visits a number of interesting locations. They travel to the realm of Faery in the course of breaking the curse. There is a lot more involved, and many secrets, than it seems on the surface. This is a shorter book, and fun read. There is a lot of humor to go along with the magic. This is also a clean read, so no worries about language or situations that might offend. I found it hard to put down and would recommend this highly.

The plot leads you on an enjoyable ride with plenty of mystery, intrigue and romance to get you invested and interested in the characters and the story. This was nicely complemented by a really accessible writing style - especially the dialogue - which was the second thing I liked. I found it to be a real-page turner, and will be keen to read more of Gingell's books for sure. While it wasn't particularly deep in the themes it dealt with (which is a comment that betrays more my own tastes than a problem with the book), what it did deal with it did well and with authenticity. Gingell makes a nice, quite original little fantasy universe, and in my view approaches Pratchett as a writing talent (if you like Pratchett, there is no reason why you shouldn't like Gingell). Looking forward to the next book in this series, as well as others by the same author.

This book had a great intro, loved it, it was very different, took me by surprise and really opened up what the story had to offer. In the end however,it just didn't deliver. I hate to say it, but the whole story and characters were unimpressive and uneventful when comparing this story line as a tie in or extension to The War for Armageddon, including Helsreach. The plot of this book could pretty much be summarized by the title and the way this book was written became hard to read after a while, Since this is a Space Marine Battles, comparing this set up narrative with Rynn's World, for example, really left me lost. Each chapter was very long, each character not adding too much depth and complexity to the whole campaign. I love the way Rynn's World was set up by location, I thought that was fantastic, this book was set up by character, and the scenes just seemed too long and drawn out. This author mentioned 'decades' as long Space Marine service and 'hundreds' of orcs as a lot...where other books would have probably mentioned centuries and thousands of orcs. This may have been better if the Space Marines were replaced with PDF or something other than Astartes, could have been more substantial. The Dark Angels showed no emotion, whenever a brother died, or when battling orcs, everything was very superficial. The Dark Angels are not really my favorite, and this book didn't help out, the one and only book I like with them in it is Eye of Terror, other than that, they've yet to stand out to me at all. Sorry Gav, this story lacked detail, twists, surprises and heart.

From the Space Wolves to the Ultramarines you can always bet on there being praying, and death to those that oppose the Emperor's will. I as much as anyone, reads a Space Marine book for these very things. Where this book truly stands out is that it portrays how a Space Marine company fights as a unit. It displays how the elements of recon, medical, and assault truly work during the chaos of war. It gives you a clear idea of how a Commander of such an element must make decisions in order to prosecute a campaign of this level. As I have said before I've read several of these novels, but this is the first one that attempts to move 40k from futuristic Sci Fi fantasy to strong military Sci Fi. Don't misunderstand if you read a Space Marines novel for the praying, and killing it is here. What it adds is the tactical aspect of how they fight, maneuver, and plan. The action is spot on and very grim, as it should be. Instead of portraying the Space Marines as unstoppable juggernauts on the battlefield it shows their thought process before, during, and after the battle. It even portrays elements of doubt that they experience. Outside of the Horus Heresy books this is rare within much of the 40k material. I think that Mc Neill and Abnett our still probably the best authors of the Black Library. Thorpe does create a very real and grim portrayal of war from the Marines standpoint. I don't think it fair to compare what Thorpe has done here with either writer. The only comparison that comes to mind is Eric Nylund's Halo books. Which shows the tactics, techniques, and sacrifices' that even the most supreme warriors must make to prosecute a war. I highly recommend this book to any 40k fan it's just different enough to be refreshing but maintains what the Space Marines are about at their core. I would also recommend it to any Military Sci Fi fan as well. It takes what exist in the 40k universe and applies it to the military structure that exists now. Instead of one hero doing it all it shows a company of warriors doing what they can to contribute. Great book and I can't wait to see if Thorpe will write another book applying these ideas.

By Shayne It has taken me over 10 years of dabbling on-and-off in the Warhammer hobby to finally give the fiction a try. To be honest I was hesitant because I expected the Warhammer 40,000 novels to be little more than poorly written fan fiction. Having been exposed to the Warhammer 40,000 universe through the rule books and codexes, I find the setting intriguing with great potential for exploration through the medium of prose fiction. My fear was that this potential would be squandered, that this unique universe full of provocative characters would be exploited and even abused. Two factors led to "The Purging of Kadillus" being my first Warhammer 40,000 novel. Firstly, if I was going to take a leap of faith then I would go with my favourite army: the Dark Angels. Their mystery and secretiveness appeals to me. There is so much for an author to explore with this Space Marine chapter. Secondly, Gav Thorpe is a name I recognise. He is arguably the most famous Warhammer 40,000 author. Combining Thorpe's fame with my interest in the Dark Angels made "The Purging of Kadillus" a seemingly perfect first choice.Sadly, I was wrong. After reading "The Purging of Kadillus" I have one theory that explains Thorpe's fame in Warhammer circles: he must be a prolific writer. This is just a theory and I say this without knowing how many work of fiction Thorpe pumps out each year. This assumption is based upon the elimination of all other possibilities. Is it that the name Gav Thorpe's name resonates because of the quality of his writing? Unless "The Purging of Kadillus" is a misrepresentation of his true potential, I must say no. What of the plot? The characters? Unfortunately, both are bland, predictable and underdeveloped. What about Thorpe's understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Yes, he seems to understand the terminology quite well, though this could simply add credit to my "prolific theory" as the more he writes the more he should understand the workings of the universe in which his stories are set.Why am I so harsh on Thorpe? There are a few reasons. His writing style is clunky. During actions scenes he overused the word "as": e.g. "As this happened, this happened." Once or twice this is fine, but there was even a point where two consecutive sentences employed this same formula. It makes for awkward reading and disrupts the flow of the story.Thorpe's descriptions were bland clichés and sometimes non existent. Being my first Warhammer 40,000 story I can guess that it's written for fans and it is assumed that vehicles, armour, weapons, etc. are known and therefore not described. I would have still liked to read some unique descriptions so I could get a feel for the characters, setting, etc.The characters' personalities were underdeveloped. The story is set out with chapters designated to different members of the Dark Angels, and even the local Free Militia. Swapping between the characters' points of view offered little. They all lacked mannerisms or other unique features that made them striking individuals. I didn't really care for any of them. It seemed to me that swapping between the characters was the only way to write a complete novel as a focus on one lead character would have proven even more unbearable due to their lack of personality. And the Orks as the enemy offered so much, but delivered so little. These guys can be hilarious. We hardly got to see things from their perspective at all. I understand that this was primarily a story from the Dark Angels' perspective, but when the Dark Angels did interact with the green skins, the Orks were limited to yelling and shooting. One of my biggest gripes: this is a Dark Angels novel. That might seem obvious since it's promoted as such and has a Space Marine in green Dark Angel armour on the cover. Still, if you do read "The Purging Of Kadillus" you'll most likely forget that they're Dark Angels most of the time, until Thorpe mentions in passing that they're wearing a robe. I found myself picturing them in blue armour until I was told that they're Dark Angels or that the mud coated their robe. The Dark Angels are a unique chapter, and they need to be written as such. If the publishers had said to Thorpe after he had completed this novel, "Sorry, Ultramarine novels sell better than Dark Angel novels. You have to change your whole novel," then it would have been half an hour maximum of using the "replace all" feature to change the names of characters and then it would have been an Ultramarines novel. The plot meanders along: a lot of battles, not much else. That's to be expected for a Warhammer 40,000 novel, but even the battles aren't exciting. The ending was an anticlimax; no sense of danger or achievement. I wanted the Dark Angels to overcome vast odds, and even though technically I think they did, it didn't feel like it.Overall, I was greatly disappointed with 'The Purging of Kadillus". All my fears were confirmed. It's poor fan fiction. I hope that this isn't Gav Thorpe's best work, but it has tainted my opinion of his fame. Thankfully, I have read Graham McNeill's High Elf novels and though he had some minor plot flaws, I found his writing style to be of a high standard. This gives me hope that not all Warhammer fiction is of the same terrible quality as "The Purging of Kadillus".So, should anyone read "The Purging of Kadillus"? Maybe. What about die hard Dark Angels fans? Only the most die hard, "I have to read everything Dark Angels" type should bother. Honestly, I'd give this novel a miss. I pushed through to the end just to see if there were any gems, perhaps a shockingly clever ending, but there were none.Poorly written, slow and unmemorable, "The Purging of Kadillus" is a failed attempt to explore a richly established universe and potentially intriguing characters.

Structural Engineering Reference Manual, 8th Ed, by Alan Williams PhD SE FICE C Eng

About the Author Alan Williams, PhD, SE, FICE, C Eng, is a registered professional engineer and structural engineer in California, a Fellow and Life Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, and a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California. He obtained his bachelor of science degree and doctorate from the University of Leeds in England. Dr. Williams has extensive experience teaching and practicing structural engineering, including designing and constructing bridges, schools, and industrial and commercial structures. He has worked as a senior engineer with the California Department of Transportation and as a Principal for Structural Safety with the California Division of the State Architect. Dr. Williams has published several textbooks and papers on structural engineering design, structural analysis, seismic design, and reinforced and prestressed concrete design.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. IntroductionPART 1: HOW TO USE THIS BOOK This Structural Engineering Reference Manual is intended to help you prepare for the 16-hour Structural Engineering (SE) exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The NCEES SE exam will test your knowledge of structural principles by presenting problems that cover the design of an entire structure or portion of a structure. The exam is given in four modules—two concerning vertical forces and two concerning lateral forces. The eight chapters of this book are organized around the eight areas in which these forces are applied. These eight areas include

  • reinforced concrete design
  • foundations and retaining structures
  • prestressed concrete design
  • structural steel design
  • timber design
  • reinforced masonry design
  • lateral forces (wind and seismic)
  • bridge design
Each chapter presents structural design principles that build on the ones before, so you should read the chapters in the order in which they are presented. The examples in each chapter should also be read in sequence. Taken together in this way, they constitute the solution to a complete design problem similar to that on the exam. Your solutions to the SE exam problems must be based on the NCEES-adopted codes and design standards. Therefore, you should carefully review the appropriate sections of the exam-adopted design standards and codes that are presented, analyzed, and explained in each chapter of this book. Each of the examples in this book focuses on one specific code principle and offer a clear interpretation of that principle.

I thought the material and format was great, except for the basic design. This book assumes you already know a great deal of information related to Structural Engineering. I also needed to buy additional books for review on Statics, Materials, Basic Design, Building Codes/ASCE 7-10 and Structural Analysis. When I failed the exam (barely) I signed up to take the PE Civil - Structural Exam. As part of my preparation for the exam I bought the Civil Engineering Reference Manual as a study guide and realized it (CERM) had more structural analysis information than the Structural Engineering Reference Manual!!! If only PPI would combine the structural portion of the CERM into a new SERM it would give the structural guys a better chance at the SE exam. I am not sure if the same is true for other disciplines but I was very disappointed when I realized the waste of time and money I spent studying a book with only half the information (the SERM had some lateral concepts but no explanation of vertical). I also submitted six errors on the errata website until I got tired of filling out the online form. They need better reviewers when they update for code changes. It's difficult to understand a question when they reference the wrong information, I thought I was going crazy until I realized all the typos. If studying the take the SE, you may also need to buy the Civil Engineering Reference Manual as a resource for structural analysis I and II.

One of my main go to books during studying AND the exam By Destaney I just took my exam 3 days ago so I wanted to write this review while it's still fresh in my mind. Overall, this book is extremely helpful and well worth the money. If you don't know how to begin in studying for the SE exam, this book will get you started on the right track. This was my main study guide for the exam and got priority seating on the table during the examination. One of the first things Alan Williams tells you in this book is that an effective study session should take about 300 hours! This is no joke! The exam covers so much information that I don't know how you could do a thorough study session with any less.My main gripes with the book were related to the fact that there was no cold-formed steel review section and that the Bridge Section of the book was really skimpy. You could tell that this book really catered to building design. If you don't know the AASHTO code, this book will not suffice as a sole-source bridge study guide. It should have put more emphasis on live load distribution analysis. It also didn't even mention wind loads or stream load pressures on bridge piers, design or analysis of abutments or columns. Also, AASHTO has its own unique way of analyzing soil retaining structures which wasn't mentioned in this book. In actuality, the bridge section probably needed to be 3 times bigger than the book allotted for. Fortunately, I am a bridge engineer so I was familiar with all this stuff. I can only imagine what other people who don't know AASHTO were thinking.

Well designed text book that will answer all of your questions about Structural Engineering and the 16 hour exam that you will need to take if you are getting ready to take the test. I have an engineer in the family and one on his way(he is starting his studies this fall in this subject) so I was interested in the process about the exam itself and the type of questions that will be asked. Sold hard cover and well thought out-the best part I thought was how easy it was to find anything you wanted very quickly-very well referenced and set up.If you are planning on taking the exam I would definitely give this book a look-it will make it easier going into the test instead of going blindfolded like so many tests are. A definite must have!

The story of an infamous crime, a revered map dealer with an unsavory secret, and the ruthless subculture that consumed him Maps have long exerted a special fascination on viewers—both as beautiful works of art and as practical tools to navigate the world. But to those who collect them, the map trade can be a cutthroat business, inhabited by quirky and sometimes disreputable characters in search of a finite number of extremely rare objects. Once considered a respectable antiquarian map dealer, E. Forbes Smiley spent years doubling as a map thief —until he was finally arrested slipping maps out of books in the Yale University library. The Map Thief delves into the untold history of this fascinating high-stakes criminal and the inside story of the industry that consumed him. Acclaimed reporter Michael Blanding has interviewed all the key players in this stranger-than-fiction story, and shares the fascinating histories of maps that charted the New World, and how they went from being practical instruments to quirky heirlooms to highly coveted objects. Though pieces of the map theft story have been written before, Blanding is the first reporter to explore the story in full—and had the rare privilege of having access to Smiley himself after he’d gone silent in the wake of his crimes. Moreover, although Smiley swears he has admitted to all of the maps he stole, libraries claim he stole hundreds more—and offer intriguing clues to prove it. Now, through a series of exclusive interviews with Smiley and other key individuals, Blanding teases out an astonishing tale of destruction and redemption. The Map Thief interweaves Smiley’s escapades with the stories of the explorers and mapmakers he knew better than anyone. Tracking a series of thefts as brazen as the art heists in Provenance and a subculture as obsessive as the oenophiles in The Billionaire’s Vinegar, Blanding has pieced together an unforgettable story of high-stakes crime.

The Map Thief: The Gripping Story of an Esteemed Rare-Map Dealer Who Made Millions Stealing Priceless Maps, by Michael Blanding

From Booklist With antiquarian objects such as centuries-old letters and maps fetching higher and higher prices at auctions these days, an entire criminal subculture has developed that matches the ingenuity of more established art thieves in snatching these items from libraries and museums. Himself an ardent cartography enthusiast since childhood, seasoned journalist Blanding takes a closer look at one particularly infamous map thief, E. Forbes Smiley III, and the series of heists Smiley engineered that eventually landed him in prison. Smiley was already well known in antiquarian circles as a charming and knowledgeable map collector who frequently donated maps to the very libraries he was stealing from until he was nabbed in 2005 after a Yale librarian noticed an X-Acto knife blade on the floor. Blanding juxtaposes the story of Smiley’s high earnings career and subsequent fall from grace into theft with the history of the map creators themselves. His book is as much a riveting true-crime tale as it is a fascinating peek inside the little-seen world of mapmaking and collecting. --Carl Hays

Review “THE MAP THIEF is a gripping, suspenseful tale, told by a veteran investigative reporter. And yes, it comes with maps.” – Minneapolis Star Tribune “Blanding tucks great little historical trivia … into his cohesive narrative… an enjoyable exploration of an obscure aspect of history.” – Miami Herald“Brisk, engaging…Maps project wishful thinking. THE MAP THIEF is a masterful cartography of a man who fell victim to such wishful thinking, destroying his life.” – The Boston Globe “Brain kale...Bizarre, fascinating, and 100 percent true.” – Mental Floss“Truth is much stranger than fiction…In the normally dry world of cartography, Smiley’s story makes for a riveting read.” – Town & Country“An enthralling look at a famous case.” – Boston Common“The best glimpse yet of the social-climbing sneak thief who stole millions of dollars in rare maps from Yale University and other institutions a decade ago.” –New Haven Register“Blanding delves deep into both Smiley’s world and the history of mapmaking…a fascinating story of ambitions high and low.” – Kirkus Reviews “Well-researched…A highly readable profile of a narcissist who got in over his head and lost it all.” – Publishers Weekly “A gripping mix of true crime, cartographic lore and bookish obsession, THE MAP THIEF is a book that map and book lovers will devour, even as they cringe at the crimes described.”– Shelf Awareness“In this cartographic caper, Michael Blanding slips into the antique map trade and takes a magnifying glass to the mind and motivations of a curious character named E. Forbes Smiley III, a New England polymath with a special talent for taking razors to rare books. The setting and the character belong in a novel, and this engrossing book reads like fiction.” – Nina Burleigh, author of the New York Times bestseller The Fatal Gift of Beauty: The Italian Trials of Amanda Knox "The Map Thief isn't just a perceptive, meticulously researched portrait of an exceedingly unlikely felon.  It's also a tribute to the beautiful old maps that inspired his cartographic crimes--and shaped our modern world." – Ken Jennings, author of Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks “Old maps tug powerfully at the imagination, and not always in healthy ways. Nothing makes that clearer than the strange, unsettling case of Forbes Smiley, whose story Michael Blanding has pieced together in captivating detail. This is an unforgettable and cautionary tale, told by an expert investigative reporter who writes with the narrative flair of a novelist. A great read!”– Toby Lester, author of The Fourth Part of the World: An Astonishing Epic of Global Discovery, Imperial Ambition, and the Birth of America “Disgraced map dealer Forbes Smiley once said that he hoped that the stories about his thefts ‘would go away.’ That might be so. But thankfully Michael Blanding decided otherwise, and he tells a powerful story about the nature of crime, greed and art. Smart, suspenseful, and engaging, this book is a fascinating read.” – Ulrich Boser, bestselling author of The Gardner Heist “This is a terrific book. The portrait of Forbes Smiley here is one we rarely get of cultural heritage thieves – complete and even-handed, without being either credulous or vindictive. The Map Thief, aside from being wonderfully readable, is a valuable addition to this area of study.” – Travis McDade, author of The Book Thief: The True Crimes of Daniel Spiegelman “Michael Blanding not only tells the spell-binding tale of a clever and obsessed thief, but he also adds to the field of research into people who commit crimes involving rare and precious items.  All the while, Blanding examines the crimes with the acumen of a seasoned investigator and the skill of a talented writer.” – Anthony M. Amore, co-author of Stealing Rembrandts: The Untold Stories of Notorious Art Heists

History and Scandal By Julie Merilatt The Map Thief has so many compelling things to offer: the history of cartography, insight into the world of rare and antique map dealing, and a true crime story. My favorite aspect was the detailed chronicle of how early navigators discovered new coastlines and continents, developing mapmaking to aide in exploration. During the time of cartographical renaissance, America was a blank space on a map that would eventually be filled in as travelers ventured further inland. As more sophisticated techniques were developed, the maps created were more detailed and varied. Then there is the contemporary trade of these maps, and at the forefront of this is E. Forbes Smiley III. An reputable map dealer, he educated himself on the history of his ware in various libraries. Alas, these institutions would eventually become his victims. The book follows him from his early days establishing relationships with collectors, to the time when he became so financially desperate, he resorted to stealing rare and highly valuable maps from library collections. Smiley is the kind of guy you want to like, but end up despising, and the one aspect of the book that I didn't particularly care for detailed his disputes with the townspeople in the village where he kept a summer home.Otherwise, I feel like I learned a great deal about the history of maps, their provenance, and their value. I found it very interesting how the institutions that Smiley stole from had to prove whether the maps Smiley stole were from their collections and the various techniques use to prosecute him. Overall, this is a fascinating combination history and scandal.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.

Fascinating History of Maps and the Story of One Daring Criminal By New Yorker Michael Blanding combines a history of cartography, the stories that antique maps tell us, and the series of crimes of a respected map dealer. Together, they make for fascinating reading. There are limited number of top-notch map dealers, who operate under a code of trust, among themselves and with their customers, who depend on them for an understanding of a map's historical significance and for assurances of its authenticity and provenance. Forbes Smiley broke that trust in order to fuel his high-cost lifestyle. He stole maps from prized institutional collections and sold them to other dealers and wealthy customers. Blanding finely details his methods, and offers portraits of all the major players in the market. In many ways the background is the most interesting part. The cartographers from as far back as the 1500's were interesting figures themselves. What they learned about geography would change the course of history, through explorations and wars. Owning these maps gives one a piece of history. When you finish this book, you may be eager to buy one yourself.

Wilkins This book is an exemplary piece of narrative nonfiction and gave me precisely the reading experience I look for from that genre. I loved the detailed descriptions of people and places which brought the story to life. I loved them even more when the author’s notes clearly showed he’d done the interviews and other research necessary to know these details. I liked that the beginning included a cast of characters, but liked even more that the author wrote so clearly, I never needed to use the cast list. I was immediately won over by the author’s decision to start the book with his journey to learn about Smiley. I actually really like narrative nonfiction where the author inserts their research adventures into the book. They give part of the story a first-person perspective, which I find very immersive. In addition to the detailed depiction of Smiley’s story, The Map Thief includes a lot of fascinating anecdotes and fun facts about the history of maps. Prior to reading this book, I might not have realized what a rich topic this was. Since the boundaries shown on maps reflect exploration, philosophical beliefs about unexplored regions, political realities, and political aspirations, the history of maps is intimately connected with the history of human expansion. The author did a fantastic job connecting the maps he discusses to larger world events. The story flowed impressively smoothly between history and Smiley’s stories. The story also raised many ethical issues which I think will be of interest to most readers. As a reader, especially having just read about the history of maps, it was easy for me to appreciate how horrible Smiley’s breach of trust was when he removed maps from the books where they belonged. The ease with which he does so highlights the balance necessary between providing public access to our cultural treasures and adequately protecting them. This book was a perfect blend of facts and human interest which I’d highly recommend to any fan of narrative nonfiction.

Perfect for sisters By penguin@123 I should have paid more attention to the dementions because I thought that it would be bigger but other than that it is great. It has an actual paragraph or more to read instead of a couple of words on a picture. I love it and I hope that my sister will too when she gets it on christmas!

When he holds out his hand, something inside me dies. My humanity. WHOA!! I did not see that coming at all! WOW!! I have no idea where Tamara is taking this but what a helluva ride!!! They say it's not about the destination but the journey that gets you there. Well, this is one thrill ride of a journey to end all journeys! And it’s not yet over!!! I cannot believe how consumed I am with this series! So much so that the wait between releases is all but killing me! Tamara has gone well beyond 'just' writing a story. She has created this dark, raw, gritty & hot, oh so VERY HOT world where so many different types of paranormals exist!! Of course, they are all wanting to change Talyn who only wants to go back a week to when she was blissfully ignorant of all of this and just be Talyn the Human. Too bad that everyone fighting for her doesn't want her, doesn't want happily ever after, they just want to breed her. Or do they? I have no idea what will happen, but for some reason I want it to happen with Merck. He's so, I don't know...all sexy Changer! I think is mostly because the story is told in first person mode from 3 different characters - Merck, Talyn & Narah - which is easy to follow. All of this and more, enriches the story to epic proportions! To lighten the story, there's humor sprinkled throughout which had me in stitches a time or 4! I probably laughed at some that weren’t maybe meant as funny, but it’s one of those things that when you are so engrossed in the story and something surprises you, you bark out a HA! or 3! Tamara and her phenomenal talent have blown me away with this series! My only 'complaint' is that I discovered this series with Lycan Alpha Claim #1 not having been released yet, and since I can't possibly NOT read each part as its released, I have to keep waiting for Tamara to write & release each part!! Okay, that isn't a 'real' complaint, but this is such a FANGTASTIC & WOLFTACULAR series and I am beyond impatient and NEED to keep reading!!! Told you Tamara has me consumed with this series! And with each part I keep falling deeper & deeper into the PAWMAZING, gritty, darker & oh so very sexy Lycan cave! One that I never want to leave!!

I don't know where the author comes up with the ideas for some of the creatures in her series', but I am surprised every time! Without giving any spoilers, I love some of the twists and turns this one takes. Not only do we have the electricity and fire of Talyn, Merck and Drake, but there's exciting news concerning Narah and her mates. It's sexy and steamy with some danger and humor thrown in for good measure! I can't wait to see which direction our little changeling goes next! This is turning into one fantastic adventure!
