American novelist and journalist. He pioneered the naturalist school and is known for portraying characters whose value lies not in their moral code, but in their persistence against all obstacles. Dreiser's outstanding works were the novels Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925).Dreiser was a committed socialist, and wrote several non-fiction books on political issues. These included Dreiser Looks at Russia (1928), the result of his 1927 trip to the Soviet Union, and two books presenting a critical perspective on capitalist America, Tragic America (1931) and America Is Worth Saving (1941).

About the Author Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), American novelist, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and attended Indiana University. He began his writing career as a newspaperman, working in Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was purchased by a publisher who thought it objectionable and made little effort to promote its sale. With the publication of The Financier in 1912, he was able to give up newspaper work and devote himself to writing. He became known as one of the principal exponents of American naturalism, and in 1944, he was awarded the Merit Medal for Fiction by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The Titan By Melissa M Grosso Dreiser's second novel of a three book series, the first being The Financier, continues the saga of Frank Cowperwood's quest for power and wealth through the use of financial acumen found in only a relatively few individuals. While written as fiction, the novel is also a wonderful history lesson of the political structure and shenanigans employed by the political and financial mavens of that period. The characters and events of the late 19th century are brought to life through Dreiser's rich and descriptive prose. Relatively few authors are able to attain the degree of detail Dreiser devotes to his plot and characters, all the while employing word usage in such as a way as to create a virtual masterpiece.

Volume 2 in The Trilogy of Desire By Bomojaz THE TITAN is Dreiser's sequel to THE FINANCIER, which was about the rise and fall and sudden rise again of Frank Cowperwood, streetcar tycoon of Philadelphia, who at the end of that first volume was leaving Philadelphia with his mistress for Chicago. THE TITAN traces his business success (and personal failings) in Chicago. Through unscrupulous business practices Cowperwood achieves the financial and political power he's always craved, but social acceptance is denied him. He blames this on his beautiful though crude mistress (now wife) Aileen, who adds to her shortcomings by taking to the bottle; their marriage is a disaster, and both have affairs. Cowperwood falls in love with the very young and na?ve Berenice Fleming; seeing herself being pushed off the scene, Aileen attempts suicide. Seeing a chance to seize total control of all the streetcar lines in Chicago, Cowperwood does everything in his power to win the necessary city council approval, but reform groups mobilize and defeat him. He leaves Chicago with Berenice for Europe.Dreiser's power as a novelist, his left-to-the-jaw, tell-it-like-it-is style captures Cowperwood and the financial dealings of a large city perfectly. His blunt approach was relatively new at the time and offended many readers, but to a modern reader it seems the only way such a story could be related. The novel is sweeping and relentless, and the reader can't help but be caught up in its flow. Although THE TITAN was published only two years after THE FINANCIER, the third volume (THE STOIC) would not appear until another 30 years had passed. Cowperwood's character was based on the real streetcar tycoon Charles T. Yerkes.

A great novel of business, Chicago, and desire By GskFn The Titan (1914) is a really, really good and original novel for readers who like Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire, as he called it, the second in a series that began with The Financier (Penguin Classics) (1912) and ended with the Stoic (1947). But to me, it's not quite as good as the Financier. Because the Titan loses a bit of the personal in favor of business details. Still, it's so original, interesting, and vintage Dreiser in showing humans as thinking and feeling yes, and also, the animal species homo sapiens, and the acquisitive impulse of wealth accumulation. Dreiser really knows how to pack history, society, and drama into a complex story. One of my favorite moments of powerful drama in fiction anywhere -- whether politics, business, or gangs -- in the movies, tv, on stage, or in the pages of a novel, is here in the Titan. Frank Cowperwood is based historically on the real-life financier and convicted white collar criminal, Charles Yerkes, who moved from Philadelphia to Chicago in the 1880s. Cowperwood wheels and deals his way into controlling a large share of Chicago's street railway system, as did Yerkes in real life. Cowperwood amasses an empire in transportation through innovation and cunning, and in so doing, he horns in on established business purviews of local notables. He moves in on some of the women in local society too, and leaves some behind.Eventually, a collection of Cowperwood's financial foes come to feel cornered, belittled, and embarrassed. They whip up a frenzy of indignation and decide to call some loans they're holding to Cowperwood, looking to knock him off his perch and loosen his grip on their city.Little did they know, Cowperwood had socked away a pile of government bonds in a vault, to cushion himself in the event of just such a financial attack as this. The foes summoned Cowperwood to the firing line. To their surprise, he spoke confidently (p. 425):"A fine night for a conference, gentlemen,' he said, walking toward a chair indicated by Mr. Arneel. 'I must say I never saw so many straw hats at a funeral before. I understand that my obsequies are contemplated. What can I do?"He beamed in a genial, sufficient way, which in any one else would have brought a smile to the faces of the company. In him it was an implication of basic power which secretly enraged and envenomed nearly all those present. They merely stirred in a nervous and wholly antagonistic way. A number of those who knew him personally nodded--Merrill, Lawrence, Simms; but there was no friendly light in their eyes."Well, gentlemen?' he inquired..." (p. 426)For the time being, Cowperwood was secure. It's not so easy to see where moral "right" lies in this chapter. Dreiser puts the question in view, tangled in social trajectories. A mob scene of entitled, local luminaries with money from who knows where, take on an upstart entrepreneurial conquistador, Cowperwood, who also is an art collector, philanthropist, and the story's protagonist who Dreiser portrays empathically and rather neutrally. Cowperwood has shored up the city's transit system, but also, he has seduced a number of women and tries to corrupt the Illinois governor to lock in his railway fortune under state monopoly protection. Whatever the "right," or lack of it, Dreiser shows that "might" -- money, looms large in affairs both public and private. The Audible.com reading by Stuart Langton is just okay. A European accent or maybe a 1920s attempted upper-crust northeast American accent is way out of place, and the reading too often is stilted. Langton's reading is not terrible, however -- it's just not as good as it could be. I've had the experience of reading this both on paper and listening. Thanks to the novel's contents, excellence comes barreling through either way. I'm apt to read this again someday.

Most fathers today strive both to be successful in their careers and to be loving, involved dads. It sometimes seems like an impossible tug-of-war. But it doesn't have to be. The Working Dad's Survival Guide helps dads understand they are not alone, and offers a series of concrete time and life management strategies that enable them to succeed in their careers while also being the present, involved fathers they always wanted to be. Through personal stories and interviews with dozens of working dads, as well as actionable advice and useful self-assessment exercises, Scott Behson will help you feel more confident in succeeding in both parts of your life. Specifically, The Working Dad's Survival Guide will help dads:

  • Understand that most dads face the same struggles they do.
  • Articulate their career and family priorities through reflection and self-assessment exercises and by reading about other dads' experiences.
  • Assess their current workplace's and employer's attitudes towards work and family. This can lead to a better understanding of ways dads can pursue work-family balance and what barriers may be in their way.
  • Maintain and enhance their work productivity through better prioritization, planning and focus, as well as more efficient time management.
  • Understand how to create, negotiate for, and utilize workplace flexibility.
  • Understand their rights regarding paternity leave.
  • Protect family time from the creeping demands of work.
  • Improve their focus on the most important aspects of parenting, and gain a better understanding of how wives, families and children benefit from present, involved fathers.
  • Carve out "me time" - exercise and social activities - needed to de-stress, renew energy and maintain mental health.
  • Build a support network of other working dads so that they can give and receive friendship, emotional support and tangible help.
A portion of the book's proceeds is donated to A Better Balance, an advocacy organization promoting family-supportive workplace and social policy. This book also features a foreword from Dr. Stewart Friedman, bestselling author of "Total Leadership" and "Leading the Life You Want."

At that time we did not even have changing tables in men's bathrooms let alone a book like this. For all dads, single or not, this is am important tool that will make the best job in the world (being a dad) even better.

It's clear that Dr. Behson has done the research and understands this topic at the highest of academic levels, yet in the book he presents the material in a supportive way that anyone could understand. He doesn't lecture, he helps the reader understand, and then use the newfound understanding to improve their situation. We all want to be the best dads we can be, and Dr. Behson wants that for us too.

When he meets Maizel, a brilliant redhead determined to follow in her mother's suicidal footsteps, he sees his life for what it really is . A worthy addition to the series By Ms. Just One More Book Having been raised in a family of high greens, where your number is everything, Chan can't help but feel like a huge disappointment. His parents are highly successful. His older brother: a natural all star champion khel player who can memorize material for a test in just ten minutes. His little sister: a child prodigy, who would already be surpassing him in school had his parents not held her back until his graduation. Chan constantly seems to fall short of his family's expectations. When rating day comes, it is almost prophetic that he received the mediocre score of a yellow. Having brought shame and dishonor to his family, he feels his only choice is to jump from the highest city building in NORA. But once there, he meets another jumper ready to follow in the suicidal footsteps as her mother. Together, will they both meet their doom, or find something to live for?I actually loved this short story and thought is was a worthy addition to this series. It brought out a whole new element to the supposed utopian society. A definite harsher side to things: what happens when you try best, yet your best still isn't good enough? Chan was a relatable character that you could easily feel empathetic towards. I would love to see more of Chan's storyline interwoven into future installments of this series!

I love how this short shows in more depth the dark side of the numbers game world. I found myself identifying with Chan and I think I'd enjoy reading more about him in another short or in other books in the series. At first this story seems predictable, but it continues to surprise you over and over again until the very end. A great read, and a wonderful taste of Rebeccas Rodes writing and world she created.

I loved Chan as a character and my heart ached for him! I loved his perspective and I was so worried for him the entire story. The ending was totally unexpected and beautiful. I'm counting down the days until Numbers Ignite releases!

This book provides a comprehensive survey of the major legal issues that arise in the course of a construction project. The structure of the book first focuses on the major participants on a project and the relationships and interests of each of participant. It then shifts to chapters on recurring themes in construction law such as the economic loss rule, calculation of damages, and defective construction. While making the concepts accessible for any reader, the book provides a logical structure for those teaching construction law to use as either the primary or supplemental reading for the course.

Version 2.5. Corrected and revised with additional material.

Computers are wonderful things. They improve our lives and produce works of art. Information and communication are free and available in ways that were undreamed of by many a generation ago.

And yet computers inspire fear when they are used improperly or misunderstood.

Everyone uses computers today. The typical student uses at least three: a portable notebook computer, a tablet, and a cell phone. None of these even existed before this year's college graduating class was born. So a reasonable amount of computer literacy is expected of everyone these days.

Though inspired by mathematics, much of the mathematical beauty of computation is largely ignored by both elementary computer science and introductory programming books.

This book is designed to help math junkies - anyone who likes math, studies math, or uses math in their daily life - learn about computation. The emphasis is on algorithms. It is appropriate for students with no prior programming experience as well as professional scientists.

Contents: Python programs, iPython notebooks, expressions, statements, types, lists, arrays, functions, classes, plotting, list comprehension, recursion. Applications include linear systems, computational geometry, root finding, interpolation, polynomial least squares, nonlinear and logistic regression, discrete systems, differential equations, principal component analysis, singular value decomposition, clustering, fractals, chaos, and satellite orbit propagation. Also covers numpy, plotting with pyplot, and basics maps with basemap.

Now includes more than 200 exercises for students.

Target audience: undergraduate math and science students entering their upper level curriculum. Calculus and some linear algebra background is helpful; a review of linear algebra is included as an appendix. No prior programming experience is expected

Scientific Computation: Python Hacking for Math Junkies, by Bruce E Shapiro

About the Author Bruce E. Shapiro teaches mathematics at California State University, Northridge, in the most challenging job he has ever had. For a while he collected degrees from various colleges, until his wife said uncle. In past lives he has been called a rocket scientist, a brain scientist, a computational scientist, a mathematical scientist, a data scientist and a generally annoying and snarky pain in the ass. None of those pursuits were particularly challenging. Now he spends his spare time eating chocolate chip cookies, playing with imaginary friends in the complex plane, and pontificating about the poor state of public education in California.

It might be painful for us to do a Taylor series or a tricky integral, but computers laugh at them. One may not be able to see if a series converges immediately, draw and redraw plots from different perspectives instantaneously, or count to 100,000 without losing their sanity, but a computer can and will. In Scientific Computation Python Hacking for Math Junkies, Bruce Shapiro teaches you to utilize the power of modern computers to solve math problems that are painstakingly time consuming for humans. Also, a problem doesn't have to be painstakingly frustrating for you to use Python; once fluent in Python, you'll want to do everything in it. Python is a very flexible and forgiving language to code with, and Shapiro gives you a good introduction to the language. On top of that, the writing is excellent and the material thought provoking. Seriously, if you are not provoked to think after reading this book, then you probably didn't read it right.

It covers basic setup and foundations of the python language and then follows that with what the author calls "Python Hacking" which is really just an approach to programming for non-programmers. The final section covers scientific computing approaches which includes algorithms and sample code snippets. The author also makes use of many standard python packages such as NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib. One thing that I always find missing in these types of books is algorithms and examples of implementation for simulation code. For example it would be nice to have a chapter dedicated to writing a simple 1D or 2D code to look at simulations of partial differential equations. Overall for the price, this is a great text to have on your bookshelf.

It seems pages are printed with an in-house laser printer, but pages with figures and source code sections look as if they were printed with a 1980ish dot matrix printer. They are very very very fuzzy. I would recommend you get an eBook version.

Sarah has come to Mr. Bigwell for help in getting away from her Ex-boyfriend Demetri, who is Mr. Bigwell’s rival and a dragon shifter. Sarah is human and has a problem with shifters. Every shifter that she comes in contact with thinks that she is their mate. Mr. Bigwell wants to help her because he thinks she is his mate. Dwayne is charged with keeping Sarah safe and alive and killing her Ex. So Dwayne’s bear thinks that Sarah is his mate and Dwayne doesn’t want a mate. He would rather kill her so that he won’t be tempted to mate her. When he takes her to his house to keep her safe they make it to the drive way before his house explodes. So they end up at a hotel, where they have sex, Dwayne tells Sarah about what he does for a living and the next morning her ex Demetri shows up at the door. Dwayne goes to take care of Demetri and knocks him out. When they leave the hotel Demetri shifts into his dragon form and tries to find them. They steal a bike and head to Dwayne’s cabin in the woods that nobody knows about. When he talks to Mr. Bigwell he wants him to bring Sarah to his house but he tells Mr. Bigwell that he will bring her in the morning. Sarah tells Dwayne about all the shifters thinking that she is their fated mate. Dwayne tells her that a side effect of being with your fated mate is that the female can feel where her mate is. So she has Dwayne hide in his cabin and she tries to find him to prove to herself whether he is her fated mate or not. She is able to find him using her new senses and realizes that Dwayne is her fated mate. Now all they have to do is get to Mr. Bigwell’s compound without Demetri finding them and killing them. Will they make it to Mr. Bigwell’s safely? Will they be able to kill Demetri? Will Dwayne get Sarah in the end? You’re just going to have to read the book to find out. I really enjoyed this book. The author did a good job with story line and character development. The chemistry between Dwayne and Sarah was really good. I really liked the hip hop club scene. I received this free book in exchange for an honest review.

I love the way Dwayn instantly recognizes his mate and the instantly tries to figure out a way to kill her. Because he does not want a fated mate.Sarah, however, is an instant mate to any shifter she meets. So she has no interest in Dwayn at all.Dwayn is pissed off at destiny. His boss Mr. Bigwell is telling him that he has to protect Sarah, his mate and Dwayn just wants to kill her, but mabe not just yet but soon. Boss man also wants Dwayn to kill whoever is out to kill Sarah.Complex when you get all the players together and things start to pop up. Dwayns' house blows up on them as they get there. And now he finds out the person trying to kill Sarah and his mark is her ex, Dmitri. Dwayn doesn't know it yet but Dmitri is a huge Dragon who want's to nothing but to burn them up.Terra has done such an excellent job on her story line and her characters. Everything starts off at a “oh no-can't go that way” to “yeah that's not so bad.” It was so fun to watch as Terra continued to develop her story-line and each character.I loved this book. So much is going, all of Terra's descriptions pulling out the visualizations within her story is awe-inspiring. You begin to see the scene and become interactive with the story and the plot. It's truly impressive.Pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed, as I left a lot of loven' and fightn' out.I was given a copy for an honest review.

The Silkworm (A Cormoran Strike Novel), by Robert Galbraith

Review "Cormoran Strike is back, and so is his resourceful sidekick, Robin Ellacott, a gumshoe team that's on its way to becoming as celebrated for its mystery-solving skills as Nick and Nora Charles of "Thin Man" fame, and Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander (a.k.a. the girl with the dragon tattoo)."―Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times"'The last line of The Silkworm, which will lift the hearts of readers who have come to love its deeply sympathetic characters, offers the prospect of more of that joy both for her and for us."―Charles Finch, USA Today (3.5/4 stars)"Robert Galbraith... has written a second absorbing whodunit starring detective Corcmoran Strike to follow last year's stealth hit, The Cuckoo's Calling.... Astutely observed, well-paced... The Silkworm thoroughly engages as a crime novel."―Sue Corbett, People"...why is "likable" the first word that comes to mind upon finishing The Silkworm? Surely, that has something to do with Rowling's palpable pleasure in her newly chosen genre (the jig may be up with her Robert Galbraith pseudonym, but the bloom is still on her homicidal rose) and even more to do with her detective hero, who, at the risk of offending, is the second husband of every author's dreams."―Louis Bayard, The Washington PostThe Silkworm is fast-paced and entertaining... Strike is heroic without intending to be and has a great back story. He's the illegitimate son of a rock star whose half-siblings grew up in privilege... And he's brooding, but not annoyingly so. Strike has all kinds of potential. It'd be a crime not to keep up with him."―Sherryl Connelly, Daily News"Having just the better part of a day and a night making my way through the 455 pages of The Silkworm ... I must say, I don't mind at all... The murder mystery at the heart of The Silkworm is a genuine mystery with an altogether satisfying resolution." ―Malcolm Jones, The Daily BeastPRAISE FOR THE CUCKOO'S CALLING:"The master is back. . . [Rowling] returns to the strengths that made Harry Potter great--the beautiful sense of pacing, the deep but illusionless love for her characters--without sacrificing the expanded range of The Casual Vacancy." --USA Today (3.5/4 stars)"A gritty, absorbing tale." --People"Cleverly plotted... Rowling serves up a sushi platter of red herring, sprinkling clues along the way, before Strike draws a confession out of the killer in a climax straight out of Agatha Christie." --Entertainment Weekly"Highly entertaining [with] a team whose further adventures the reader cannot help eagerly awaiting." --Michiko Kakutani, New York Times"[Rowling's] literary gift is on display in this work. She crafts an entertaining story [and] comes up with an ending that I'll admit I was surprised by. . . . A fun read, with a main character you can care about and one you'll want to see again in other adventures." --The Washington Post

About the Author Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy.

I arranged my entire week around reading it so that once I started, I wouldn't have to put it down. This is always a dangerous endeavor, because if the book turns out to be less good than I hoped, I'm deeply disappointed. As you can guess by the title of this review, quite the opposite occurred. In my opinion, Galbraith's greatest strength is the ability to build believable, unique characters who are realistic and have distinct speaking styles. Well, that and stunningly good prose. It isn't necessary to read The Cuckoo's Calling first, but I think it's a good idea. This book begins a few months after the last one left off, and the relationships have progressed accordingly. There aren't particular heroes or villains, just real people who are good and bad, kind and mean, ugly and pretty -- where none of those three things necessarily correspond to any of the others. In any case, Strike and Robin are going about their normal business, with all the usual small misunderstandings and unexpected skills, etc. that go along with most working relationships. Then, when Strike is exhausted and not thinking clearly, he takes on a new client, a rather worn-looking middle-aged woman who wants him to find her husband and thinks it'll be a short, simple job, and she's sure someone else will pay his bill.Ah hah. Sure that's how it's going to work. And so our story kicks off.Oh, I should add -- I am a professional editor and a very prolific reader. Of the dozens of new books I've read so far this year, this is the best.

By Bookworm 426 I enjoyed "The Cuckoo's Calling" and was eager for the reappearance of protagonist sleuth Cormoran Strike. What I deduce from "The Silkworm" is that Ms. Rowling seems to have achieved such stratospheric fame that no editor will favor her with the revision this novel so desperately needs. His amputated leg hurts. I get it.It's miserable winter weather. I get it.He has unresolved issues with his former fiancee. I get it.I am not permitted not to get it. I found that 450 pages of numbing repetitive detail reduced the plot to a plod. It was fortunate the suspects did not succumb to old age before the climax. In future installments--and I trust there will be several--I would love to see Cormoran Strike liberated to get on with his job. He's too satisfying a character to languish like this.

In this caper he's attempting to find the murderer of an odious novelist, the identity of whom could be any number of the unpleasant victim's unpleasant friends, editors, agents, publishers or other unsavory players in the publishing world. While it's easy to dislike many of the other characters in The Silkworm, it's only because Rowling does such a terrific job depicting them. It seems rather to be the point. The relationships between each of these appalling people are discovered and revealed with surprising twists, allowing them to show off a deep variety of reprehensible, sad and sometimes kinky personality traits. We also get to know more of Strike's back story, which is interesting, and are introduced more thoroughly to his assistant, Robin, and her family, which is also interesting. Both Strike and Robin have complicated personal lives and these are expressed with sympathy and intelligence. All the while, Strike limps back and forth around London, putting together the pieces of an especially nasty homicide.I disagree with those folks who say the book drags (although, ironically, this novel concerning the London publishing scene could do with some editing - it's a bit long). There's a lot going on, the pacing is excellent, the twists and turns are exciting. Rowling's gift for dialogue is tremendous, too. She certainly knows her way around profanity. On the down side, the discoveries made by our hero Strike are tenuous and difficult to swallow. A few of the leads go nowhere and are unceremoniously dropped. The usual suspects are well known by the time the killer is identified - at which point it doesn't really matter which one of them did the deed because they're such an interchangeably awful bunch. The way the facts of the crime are surmised and then confirmed seems improbable and contrived. Strike doesn't solve his whodunits with old fashioned logic and deductive reasoning. Instead, he has a highly developed sense of suspicion that leads him to impossibly coincidental hunches that just happen to be spot on. Lastly, as in this novel's predecessor, a well-constructed build-up is let down by another dubious, anti-climactic reveal scene.Still, The Silkworm is a very good, gory story that's a lot of fun to read. The arrival is something of a let-down but the journey is well worth the trip. As with the HP books, this novel takes care to acknowledge the previous one and anticipate the next. There are very promising developments between Strike and the increasingly-loveable Robin, which bodes well for the future of this series. Hopefully, the payoff will be up to par with the delivery next time out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. excellent gift for those who love history and studying the bible! By Bless Their Hearts Mom The DVD (and Discovery Guide) is divided into five segments: Abraham and Sarah and Three Strangers,Israel at Sinai:The First Great Commission, Jesus Renews His Mission: Seeking the Lost, The Lost Son: In a Far Country and The Seeking Father: The Lost Son Returns. Each DVD lesson is about 30 minutes in length, and will hold you rapt, as you learn! Learning about the bible, while being shown where it occurred, helps to really cement the lessons in you mind. In each lesson there are Opening Thoughts from Ray and then the Discovery Guide allows you to pause and think about what you were told and how it applies. Then you have a section to take notes during the body of the lesson, with points for reference for notes. Then there is a DVD discussion area, including facts, photos and history from the DVD. Then there are leads for small group discussion, and then Points to Ponder, followed by a Faith Lesson, with additional discussion, Each lesson ends with a closing and memorization. Then there are 5 days worth of study guides. Altogether, watching the DVD as a class and allowing for writing, you are looking at an hour's time. This set REALLY helps you to understand why the Israelites were chosen by God to the chosen people, and why Israel is the chosen place, and ultimately, why it is so fought over. The historical perspective and tidbits REALLY make this bible study different and so informative, you can feel the bible come alive, as you learn. This was the first bible study I had checked out from Vander Laan, and it definitely won't be the last!If you are looking for a new bible study program for your church, or for home study, this is the program for you! Homeschooling parents may even find the historical parts great for their Middle East history sections. And the study set would be an excellent Christmas present for those who love history and studying the bible!

Discover the mission that God gave his people many centuries ago and how that impacts us today. My Review: Ray Vander Laan has many items in this series that should be of some interest. That the World May series is very informative and can reach across barriers within ourselves especially that we may not have realized existed. In this book and DVD set we are taken to Israel and we get to learn more about this wonderful country. There are five segments that are filmed on location. These five segments are :Abraham and Sarah and Three StrangersIsrael at Sinai:The First Great CommissionJesus Renews His Mission: Seeking the LostThe Lost Son: In a Far CountryThe Seeking Father: The Lost Son Returns The author challenges you to look inside yourself too the mission that God has placed on your heart to complete. Jesus beckons us to seek out lost souls for Him and help Him just as the apostles did. Our mission alone is to win lost souls for Christ, that is something placed in each one of us. The segments contained therein are fascinating but my favorite part was the fact that they were filmed on location. I can't wait for the day that I can finally visit there. An amazing land that is perfect for God's people and His mission.**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Litfuse.

By Pirate2240 For some people to study subjects they want to know more about, some use books, reference materials of some sort, or a DVD which offers both an auditory and visual perspective, but when you pair these resources alongside your Bible to understand the meaning behind why God selected the Israelite people aside from all the other people living in the world, with a mission to bring the "sheep back into His kingdom," you want to probe into the context that really makes up a true Bible study. That is where the DVD, Israel's Mission: Experience the Bible in Historical Context, along with the book, Israel's Mission: Discovery Guide, from Ray Vander Laan, renowned teacher and historian of the "That the World May Know" series, comes into play.Using five very different segments from Abraham and Sarah and the three strangers, Israel at Sinai, Jesus Renews the Mission of Seeking the Lost, The Lost Son in a Far Away Country, and finally The Seeking Father: The Lost Son Returns, we can unlock the meaning behind God's plan to reclaim His world that had been broken by sin and to use people as His partners in that effort. By choosing a people, Israel, and a place, the promised land at the crossroads of an ancient world, to make His name known. By living in the Promised Land and obeying God's commandments, his chosen people couldn't help but display his character and make Him known to the entire world.Yet they struggled to be faithful. They were blessed repeatedly by God's hand, but turned away to worship the gods of the nations around them. Prophets of God called them back to Him, back to their mission, but when they refused God allowed pagan nations to conquer the land and carry His people away to foreign lands. The arena has changed in time, but the mission has not. God's partners have always struggled to carry out this task faithfully and this series and study is designed that people will seek to engage this culture and be a blessing to wherever God places us. Using real life locations through the DVD portion of this study, readers are engaged to revisit the Bible and see how even in modern day times, these lessons are still applicable. So many things from the Bible are culture based to apply to the people living in the areas at this time and for those of us that fail to really understand the concepts we miss how it applies to our life today.I received Israel's Mission DVD and Discovery Guide by Ray Vander Laan compliments of Zondervan Publishers, Focus on the Family and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of the DVD and Discovery Guide for a favorable review and the opinions found here are my personal honest ones. For me this series takes all the necessary learning elements, auditory, visual and kinetic and brings the Bible to life in a whole new way. From understand the culture references, to rereading the Bible and seeing it from a different perspective it encourages the reader and viewer to an entirely new perspective into understanding the Bible, God's great commission and how we all need to do our part to share it with a lost and hurting world. It allows all of us to become a kingdom of priests in a prodigal world! For me these both rated a 5 out of 5 stars.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Awesome! By Angelily I love this planner. I'm using it for the first time this year. I love the weekly pages that split each day into 5 columns. I use it for keeping track of myself, husband, kids, work, and miscellaneous items. Four stars instead of five because I really wish the cover was sturdier. I'm really careful with it, but do carry it in my bag, and the corners are already looking worn. Other than that, I love it. Also love that it has folder pockets inside the cover.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really love this planner By C-L I really love this planner. It's small enough to carry around in my purse but still big enough to fit all of the info I need to. It's perfect for the busy mom or student and for integrating all areas of your life into one place. I use to keep my home planner and school planner separate but with this I can keep it all in once place.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect! By Lisa Antley-hearn This is a beautiful planner, and I can't wait to use it. The different columns for each day in the weekly section is perfect for any list, categorized as you wish.

“We’ve been together in sickness and in health, through the death of his mother, through the adoption of our children, through four long years of this legal battle,” Jason Morgan told reporters of himself and his partner, Chuck Swaggerty. “And if being together through all of that isn’t love and commitment or isn’t family or isn’t marriage, then I don’t know what is.” Just minutes earlier on that day, April 3, 2009, the justices of the Iowa Supreme Court had agreed. The court’s decision in Varnum v. Brien made Iowa only the third state in the nation to permit same-sex couples to wed—moderate, midwestern Iowa, years before such left-leaning coastal states as California and New York. And unlike the earlier decisions in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Varnum v. Brien was unanimous and unequivocal. It catalyzed the unprecedented and rapid shift in law and public opinion that continues today.Equal Before the Law tells the stories behind this critical battle in the fight for marriage equality and traces the decision’s impact. The struggle began in 1998 with the easy passage of Iowa’s Defense of Marriage Act and took a turn, surprising to many, in 2005, when six ordinary Iowa couples signed on to Lambda Legal’s suit against the law. Their triumph in 2009 sparked a conservative backlash against the supreme court justices, three of whom faced tough retention elections that fall. Longtime, award-winning reporters Tom Witosky and Marc Hansen talked with and researched dozens of key figures, including opponent Bob Vander Plaats, proponents Janelle Rettig and Sharon Malheiro, attorneys Roger Kuhle, Dennis Johnson, and Camilla Taylor, and politicians Matt McCoy, Mary Lundby, and Tom Vilsack, who had to weigh their careers against their convictions. Justice Mark Cady, who wrote the decision, explains why the court had to rule in favor of the plaintiffs. At the center of the story are the six couples who sacrificed their privacy to demand public respect for their families. Through these voices, Witosky and Hansen show that no one should have been surprised by the 2009 decision. Iowans have a long history of leadership on civil rights. Just a year after Iowa became a state, its citizens adopted as their motto the phrase, “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” And they still do today.

Equal Before the Law: How Iowa Led Americans to Marriage Equality (Iowa and the Midwest Experience), by Tom Witosky, Marc Hansen

Review “Equal Before the Law grabs your attention on page one and never lets you go. This is a first-of-its-kind, behind-the-scenes look into the decision that changed marriage in America forever. You’ll chuckle, you may even cry, and agree or disagree with the Court’s decision, you’ll put the book down understanding why, and how, Varnum changed everything.”—Zach Wahls, LGBTQ advocate“Tom Witosky and Marc Hansen have told a compelling story of how elected judges in Iowa—America’s heartland—struck down prohibitions on same-sex marriage as discriminatory, out of the state’s tradition of tolerance and equality. Some of these courageous jurists were recalled, but their prescience offered a pathway to a greater acceptance of marriage equality in the country.”—Al Hunt, Bloomberg“Equal Before the Law fills an important need, and does it very well. Much has been written about the fight for LGBT rights at the national level, but the progress we have achieved on one important issue—same-sex marriage—has occurred almost entirely at the state level, and too little has been written about that. This insightful, informative, and well-written account of the fight for same-sex marriage in Iowa helps fill that vacuum very well. Tom Witosky and Marc Hansen do an excellent job of weaving three threads together—the personal, the judicial, and the political. It is an essential addition to any reading list about the fight for LGBT equality in this century.”—Congressman Barney Frank (retired)

About the Author For thirty-three years, Tom Witosky covered Iowa politics, law, business, and sports for the Des Moines Register, reporting many major stories and gaining a reputation for innovative investigative journalism. One of the first investigative sports reporters in the country, he made sports news a regular front-page feature both at home and nationally. Witosky and his wife, Diane, are the parents of two grown children and grandparents of three children. They live in Des Moines, Iowa.  Marc Hansen spent over thirty years writing sports, metro, and feature-page columns for the Des Moines Register, often posting the paper’s highest readership numbers and winning numerous awards. Hansen and his wife, Jody, have three adult children. All have moved out of the family home near Des Moines, Iowa, while refusing to take the dog and cat.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The book does an excellent job of putting legal theory into layman's terms By Mary H. It's a bit slow in the beginning, but then is a very compelling story of how Iowa became a pioneer in legalizing same sex marriage. The book does an excellent job of putting legal theory into layman's terms, but the book holds your interest because of the personal stories of the players involved -- the plaintiffs, the lawyers, the judges etc. I highly recommend it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Solid Journalism By Thomas Bengtson Two veteran Iowa journalists have done future historians a great service. They place the Varnum v. Brien 2009 decision by the Iowa Supreme Court in context, both nationally and locally, and both for more recent years and since Iowa became a state. Their style is not polemic, but more along the lines of what might be expected from journalists--who said what, who did what and when they did it, with liberal use of direct quotes, along with the sources of these facts and quotes. Their long careers in Iowa gave them access to many sources, on both sides of the issue, which they use liberally and to good effect. The book might serve more as a reference than a narrative about marriage equality in Iowa, and as such it belongs in every library.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful read By Amazon Customer A great read for a complex case (and the surrounding subjects). Brings a human face to a fight that divided a state, and later the country. Agree or disagree with the result, this book shines a light on the people involved.
