As dance training evolves and becomes more complex, knowledge of motor behavior is foundational in helping dancers learn and master new skills and become more efficient in integrating the skills. Motor Learning and Control for Dance is the first resource to address motor learning theory from a dance perspective. Educators and students preparing to teach will learn practical ways to connect the science behind dance to pedagogy in order to prepare dancers for performance. Dancers interested in performance from the recreational to professional levels will learn ways to enhance their technical and artistic progress.

In language accessible even to those with no science background, Motor Learning and Control for Dance showcases principles and practices for students, artists, and teachers. The text offers a perspective on movement education not found in traditional dance training while adding to a palette of tools and strategies for improving dance instruction and performance. Aspiring dancers and instructors will explore how to develop motor skills, how to control movement on all levels, and—most important—how motor skills are best taught and learned.

The authors, noted experts on motor learning and motor control in the dance world, explore these features that appeal to students and instructors alike:

• Dance-specific photos, examples, and figures illustrate how to solve common problems various dance genres.

• The 16 chapters prepare dance educators to teach dancers of all ages and abilities and support the development of dance artists and students in training and performance.

• An extensive bibliography of sports and dance science literature allows teachers and performers to do their own research.

• A list of key terms is at the beginning of each chapter with an accompanying glossary at the back of the book.

Part I presents an overview of motor behavior, covering motor development from birth to early adulthood. It provides the essential information for teaching posture control and balance, the locomotor skills underlying a range of complex dance skills, and the ballistic skills that are difficult to teach and learn, such as grand battement and movements in street dance.

Part II explores motor control and how movement is planned, initiated, and executed. Readers will learn how the nervous system organizes the coordination of movement, the effects of anxiety and states of arousal on dance performance, how to integrate the senses into movement, and how speed and accuracy interact.

Part III investigates methods of motor learning for dancers of all ages. Readers will explore how to implement a variety of instructional strategies, determine the best approaches for learning dance skills, and motivate and inspire dancers. This section also discusses how various methods of practice can help or hinder dancers, strategies for improving the recall of dance skills and sequences, and how to embrace somatic practice and its contribution to understanding imagery and motor learning.

Motor Learning and Control for Dance addresses many related topics that are important to the discipline, such as imagery and improvisation. This book will help performers and teachers blend science with pedagogy to meet the challenge of artistry and technique in preparing for dance performance.

This calendar is not one of those huge high gloss items that is just too commercial to be attractive. Rather, the paper is obviously artistic quality and worthy of gifting to a special cat loving friend.

Each covered all the topics tested. It was great to use the diagnostic tests before studying the chapters. The chapters had many questions that let me learn the material. The step by step and detailed explanations are what makes this book so great. Friends were using my book and ignoring their study material because they saw that these two AP physics 1 and 2 books were superior to their books from other authors. Really targeted my studying. I was able to gain confidence from all my practice, learn the concepts and be very efficient in my study time. I did great on both exams. Thanks to Sterling the tests are behind me and I have the scores I hoped for.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. My understanding of physics improved from using this book. By Sid Rahman My tutor told me about this book that he uses with his students preparing for AP physics 2. The topics in the book are the ones covered on the AP physics 2 exam. This was exactly what I was looking for to prep for the AP exam. I worked through several diagnostic tests in the book to know where to focus my efforts. I then solved more physics problems in the book and read the detailed explanations to the chapters. I then completed the additional diagnostic tests to reinforce and clarify my understanding.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Did well on the exam and thanks to this book By Tiffany Fields The diagnostic tests are great because they were representative of my understanding of the material. Different than other books my friends owned, they are a great tool in the book. I learned from the detailed explanations to the questions. The large number of questions allowed me to focus my studying. I did great on the test and was much better prepared by using this book for the AP physics 2 test. I am glad I used this book to do well on the test.

Review

"… a gold mine of ideas: things I had no idea knitr could do (integrate with different languages like Python), and tricks to get around some of the awkward things I needed to do (moving all the code to an appendix for tech-fearful readers). It also explains all the guts of the system and is especially informative about how knitr can cache results of time-intensive calculations, so that they do not have to be rerun each time you compile the document if the precedents have not changed. The book is well written …"―MAA Reviews, December 2015

Praise for the First Edition:"After reading Dynamic Documents with R and knitr, … I became a fan of this package and its flexibility. The book is written in a conversational style that gives a clear and practical introduction to knitr for both beginners and advanced users. … Compared with Sweave, knitr is more powerful. … Furthermore, knitr is more flexible than Sweave. … Most impressively, caching can be incorporated in a simple way by knitr. … The book is readable with a clear overall structure. … this book allows us to enhance our knowledge of knitr’s usage and quickly find what we want."―The American Statistician, February 2015

"The book provides a systematic description of the package [knitr], including its concepts, design principles, and philosophy. It also has many examples, well-thought-out advice, and useful tips and tricks. … The book is well written. It has introductory material useful for novices as well as advice for more seasoned users, all explained in conversational English without unnecessary technical jargon. … While I have been using Sweave and then knitr for several years, I still learned many new useful things from the book. … the book deserves a place on the bookshelves of both new and experienced R and TeX users."―Boris Veytsman, TUGboat, Volume 35, 2014

"If you are looking to learn how to use knitr, this book is for you. There are a limited number of resources for learning knitr because the package is relatively new and the documentation produced by Xie is so good. … I think this book will continue to be the best resource about knitr …easy to understand … this is a great read and handy desk reference for the regular knitr user."―Journal of Statistical Software, January 2014

"Three recent books have significantly influenced how I use R in reproducible work: Dynamic Documents with R and knitr by Yihui Xie, Reproducible Research with R and RStudio by Christopher Gandrud, and Implementing Reproducible Research edited by Victoria Stodden, Friedrich Leisch, and Roger D. Peng … I recommend all three books to R users at any level. There really is something here for everyone."―Richard Layton, PhD, PE, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Indiana, USA

The knitr software really is incredible. The publisher and author would probably get higher revenue at a lower price point given the pdf can be accessed through Google.Note that it does not work at all on Kindle devices. Also on IOS it's more like reading a pdf (the book is created in knitr) than a traditional Kindle book.

One of my professors at ISU (the author's alma mater) recommended this textbook to me after I mentioned to him that Sweave seemed very difficult to pick up, and I'm very pleased with it. This is a very good textbook. If you need to learn how to use LaTeX with R, look no further. I was able to use knitr after a very quick read through this book. Highly recommended.

#1 New York Times Bestseller * #1 Indie Next Pick “Absorbing...Winning...The many layers in The Oregon Trail are linked by Mr. Buck’s voice, which is alert and unpretentious in a manner that put me in mind of Bill Bryson’s comic tone in A Walk in the Woods.” —Dwight Garner, The New York TimesAn epic account of traveling the length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way—in a covered wagon with a team of mules, an audacious journey that hasn’t been attempted in a century—which also chronicles the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country. Spanning two thousand miles and traversing six states from Missouri to the Pacific coast, the Oregon Trail is the route that made America. In the fifteen years before the Civil War, when 400,000 pioneers used the trail to emigrate West—scholars still regard this as the largest land migration in history—it united the coasts, doubled the size of the country, and laid the groundwork for the railroads. Today, amazingly, the trail is all but forgotten. Rinker Buck is no stranger to grand adventures. His first travel narrative, Flight of Passage, was hailed by The New Yorker as “a funny, cocky gem of a book,” and with The Oregon Trail he brings the most important route in American history back to glorious and vibrant life. Traveling from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Baker City, Oregon, over the course of four months, Buck is accompanied by three cantankerous mules, his boisterous brother, Nick, and an “incurably filthy” Jack Russell terrier named Olive Oyl. Along the way, they dodge thunderstorms in Nebraska, chase runaway mules across the Wyoming plains, scout more than five hundred miles of nearly vanished trail on foot, cross the Rockies, and make desperate fifty-mile forced marches for water. The Buck brothers repair so many broken wheels and axels that they nearly reinvent the art of wagon travel itself. They also must reckon with the ghost of their father, an eccentric yet loveable dreamer whose memory inspired their journey across the plains and whose premature death, many years earlier, has haunted them both ever since. But The Oregon Trail is much more than an epic adventure. It is also a lively and essential work of history that shatters the comforting myths about the trail years passed down by generations of Americans. Buck introduces readers to the largely forgotten roles played by trailblazing evangelists, friendly Indian tribes, female pioneers, bumbling U.S. Army cavalrymen, and the scam artists who flocked to the frontier to fleece the overland emigrants. Generous portions of the book are devoted to the history of old and appealing things like the mule and the wagon. We also learn how the trail accelerated American economic development. Most arresting, perhaps, are the stories of the pioneers themselves—ordinary families whose extraordinary courage and sacrifice made this country what it became. At once a majestic journey across the West, a significant work of history, and a moving personal saga, The Oregon Trail draws readers into the journey of a lifetime. It is a wildly ambitious work of nonfiction from a true American original. It is a book with a heart as big as the country it crosses.

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey, by Rinker Buck

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2015: Well into middle-age, Rinker Buck found himself divorced, at the edge of bankruptcy, and growing blunt through the twin demons of ennui and alcohol. This was not a state he was accustomed to; instilled by his father with a sense of daring, Buck was no stranger to adventure, having been (with his brother) one half of the youngest duo to fly across the country, a tale documented in his celebrated book, Flight of Passage. On a whim, he found himself in a museum at the head of the Oregon Trail, realizing that even as a fairly serious American history buff, he knew virtually nothing about the pivotal era when 400,000 pioneers made their way West in quests for land, gold, and new lives. On a much bigger whim, Buck decided to travel the 2,000 miles of ruts and superseding highways in a mule-driven wagon on his own “crazyass” quest for a new beginning. The result is a dense-yet-entertaining mix of memoir, history and adventure, as Buck-- joined by another brother, Nick, and his “incurably filthy” dog, Olive Oyl--struggle with the mechanical, environmental, and existential challenges posed by such an unusually grueling journey. Buck is an engaging writer, and while the book pushes 500 pages, the story never lags. By the end, you’ll know more about mules than you ever thought you would (just enough, actually), and you’ll have a better perspective on the Trail, its travelers, and the role it played in shaping the modern United States. (And is Rinker Buck not a pioneer-worthy name for an tale such as this?)--Jon Foro

Review “An incredible true story . . . Weaving a tale somewhere between a travelogue and a history lesson, Buck traces the iconic path literally and figuratively as he re-creates the great migration with his brother and a Jack Russell terrier.” —Entertainment Weekly“Excellent . . . An amazing cross-country journey . . . Rinker and Nick Buck’s conquest of the trail, the achievement of a lifetime, makes for a real nonfiction thriller, an account that keeps you turning the pages because you can’t conceive how the protagonists will make it through the enormous real-life obstacles confronting them.” —Ian Frazier, The New York Review of Books“Enchanting . . . Interspersed with the story of his westward journey, Mr. Buck entertains and enlightens with discourses on American history and culture. . . . He has delivered us a book filled with so much love—for mules, for his brother, for America itself. . . . Long before Oregon, Rinker Buck has convinced us that the best way to see America is from the seat of a covered wagon.” —Gregory Crouch, The Wall Street Journal“Absorbing . . . The many layers in The Oregon Trail are linked by Mr. Buck’s voice, which is alert and unpretentious in a manner that put me in mind of Bill Bryson’s comic tone in A Walk in the Woods. . . . He’s good company on the page, and you root for him. . . . He’s particularly winning on how, as he puts it, ‘the vaudeville of American life was acted out on the trail.’ . . . This shaggy pilgrimage describes a form of happiness sought, and happiness found.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times“Awe-inspiring . . . Charming, big-hearted, impassioned, and a lot of fun to read . . . If Buck doesn’t quite make you want to hitch up your own wagon, his rapturous account will still leave you daydreaming and hungry to see this land.” —The Boston Globe“A remarkable saga . . . Thanks to Buck’s utterly engaging voice, infectious enthusiasm, unquenchable curiosity, dogged determination and especially his ability to convey the interaction of two brothers (and three mules), all of whom pull together despite their strong but profoundly different personalities, the saga becomes nothing short of irresistible. . . . This tale of brotherhood, persistence and daring so snares the emotions that it becomes a tear-jerker at its close.” —Rosemary Herbert, Minneapolis Star Tribune“A laugh-out-loud masterpiece . . . Alternately harrowing and exhilarating . . . The book is an unremitting delight.” —Willamette Week“Interwoven in Buck’s adventure tale is a fascinating history of the development of the trail, its heyday, and the colorful characters that made the journey. . . . Whether their primary interest is American history, adventure travel or a captivating memoir, readers are sure to be delighted by this humorous and entertaining story that allows us to believe that Walter Mitty–like fantasies can indeed come true.” —Associated Press“A quintessential American story . . . The Oregon Trail attains its considerable narrative power by interweaving pioneer history with Rinker-and-Nick-and-mules interpersonal strife with poignant memories of the author’s father, who took his own family on a covered wagon journey through New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1958. . . . This makes The Oregon Trail a rare and effective work of history—the trail stories of the Buck brothers bring humor and drama, and the pioneer biographies supply a context that makes every other aspect of the book snap into sharp relief. . . . The experience of The Oregon Trail stands squarely opposite much of what is modern—it’s slow travel with poor communication, it places struggle before comfort, and it represents a connection with history rather than a search for the newest of the new. In that sense, you’d think the book would be slow-paced and fusty, but it’s really something else: raw, visceral, and often laugh-out-loud funny. For anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing America slowly from the back of a wagon, The Oregon Trail is a vicarious thrill.” —James Norton, Christian Science Monitor“A trip back in time . . . Buck brings the land to life in a richly researched book that draws heavily from journals kept by the pioneers and their memoirs. . . . His exploration of America and himself is a joy to read.” —USA Today (4 out of 4 stars)“What a way to spend a summer! Rinker Buck lived the dream of countless red-blooded Americans. . . . The Oregon Trail is must reading for anyone in love with the West.” —Jules Wagman, Cleveland Plain Dealer“This book is a keeper. . . . The straight-ahead title scarcely does justice to this rollicking good read, a book that’s as much fun as the Brothers Buck seem to be as they travel from Missouri to Oregon by covered wagon. . . . Observant, conversational, and often funny, The Oregon Trail makes for a satisfying trip.” —Seattle Times“Exhilarating . . . Bristles with new information . . . Although the subject of the Oregon Trail has been raked over by some of America’s finest historians, Rinker manages to relate stories about pioneer life, disease, grave location, and trail development and history that add to our collective knowledge. . . . The book sparkles.” —The Wichita Eagle“An entertaining and enlightening account of one of America’s most legendary migrations. Even readers who don’t know a horse from a mule will find themselves swept up in this inspiring and masterful tale of perseverance and the pioneer spirit.” —Publishers Weekly“Astonishing . . . By turns frankly hilarious, historically elucidating, emotionally touching, and deeply informative . . . A crazy whim of a trip on a covered wagon turns into an inspired exploration of American identity.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“This smart, endearing book is not just about a picaresque and probably ill-advised adventure; it’s a story about us—who we are and how we came to be that way. As he makes his two thousand-mile pilgrimage by cussed mule across the dusty continent, Rinker Buck finds his way deep into our nation’s DNA.” —Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder and Americana“How lucky we are that Rinker Buck and his brother, as stubborn and endearing as the mules they drove, undertook this patently imprudent journey—so the rest of us could sit in our easy chairs and tag along for the wild and woolly ride. Along the way we learn a little about mule breeders, tongue relievers, cholera, cattle guards, and littering, 1850s style—and a lot about the enduring essence of the pioneer spirit. Part Laura Ingalls Wilder, part Jack Kerouac, The Oregon Trail is an idiosyncratic and irresistible addition to the canon of American road-trip literature.” —George Howe Colt, National Book Award finalist for The Big House“Buck’s lean prose, historical insight, and penetrating curiosity elevate The Oregon Trail into an instant classic that deserves a place on your bookshelf between Bryson and Horwitz. A master storyteller and dogged reporter, Buck gives substance to an unrelenting wanderlust that is the envy of anyone who has ever dreamed of lighting out for the territories.” —Bob Drury, coauthor of The Heart of Everything That Is“Once you start reading this book, you will not want to stop. With wonderful writing, colorful characters, and a deep understanding of history and the human condition, Rinker Buck delivers a richly rewarding portrait of the Oregon Trail, past and present. Using humor and compassion, he creates a compelling, page-turning saga of the American experience.” —Eric Jay Dolin, author of Fur, Fortune, and Empire and Leviathan“Romantic . . . Compelling . . . The Oregon trip is fraught with mishaps, near-death experiences, and plain bad luck. But there were also angels along the way helping them get through.” —Library Journal

Goethel The author, who is a self described book worm, history junkie, and control freak decided, basically on a whim, to drive a wagon over the entire Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon in one summer. Although this has been done by others in past years, it has never been done in modern times without support vehicles and an entourage of people meeting the wagon every night. His original goal was to drive, alone, without any support assistance, which would be a first. Eventually, after his brother found out about the trip, he decided to allow his brother to accompany him. And that was still a first. He spent the winter and spring prior to the trip doing research in old journals and historical documents about the trail. He also studied maps to determine where he would have to divert from the original trail to a highway and what obstacles he would face. He and his brother drove, in the late spring, to Missouri where he had purchased and authentic wagon and a team of mules for the trip. His reason for chosing mules is well documented in the book, but you will have to read it to find out why he chose them. The book consists of three parts intertwined with each other. First, most obviously, is a written record of the trip. He describes what was happening, where it was happening and how he and his brother coped with various problems. The second part was from the historical records. He describes, from journals, what the original settlers were going through in various parts of the trail and compares his journey to what the settlers experienced. Finally, he describes some issues he has with his father and tries to reconcile long buried feeling she has towards his father. The book is very well written. The author has a unique way with words, which breathes life into what could have been a very dull book. At times, I could see the mountains and valleys and feel the tug of the mules as they climbed a steep hill. I could also, thanks to his descriptions, imagine what it was like for the people who originally traveled the trail. It did drag a little in several places, especially when he talks about his father. Unfortunately, the issues with his father mesh with the current wagon train stories, so it is sort of hard to skip those parts. If you do, you will lose some of the story from the wagon. In addition, maps are included, but in many of them hie is talking about some place that they were that is not on the maps. I would recommend to the publisher that they make the trails that they traveled a wider black line and insure that most of the places he is discussing are on the maps.I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is very entertaining, as well as educational.I was on the fence between a 4 star and 5 star rating, but I enjoyed it too much to give it only a four.

A History Of The Oregon Trail And A Personal Journey By scesq Rinker Buck and his brother got to live the dream of many a history buff and in doing so wrote a history/travel book that is very enjoyable to read. In doing so he got the chance to learn about life, think back to times with his family and make the history and experiences of the Oregon Trail come alive. This could have been two books. It could have been a history of the Oregon Trail. I learned a lot about what the settlers who traveled on the Oregon Trail faced daily. It could also been a travel book talking about how two brothers learned a lot about the world and themselves while traveling the Oregon Trail The author does an remarkable job of merging these two books into one and in doing so creating a work that I read in three sittings. I literally did not want to put this down. This book is a rare example of excellent writing combined with a fascinating story about a recreated journey from the past. There have been a number of books written by people who have recreated journeys made by explorers in the past. There are television shows where people live like people did in the past. Most of these fail because they get caught up in the “gimmick” of modern people living in the past. While the premise of this book is that two modern men take and old wagon and three mules on the Oregon Trail, the end result is so much more. What makes this book different is the author is an exceptionally good writer who knows how to write about history as well his journey and I wound up caring both about the history and the journey.

First for providing this delightful pilgrimage through the American spirit; and then second for introducing readers to his brother Nick, a retro-pioneer born of freedom's soil.Expect to come away from "The Oregon Trail" read with a lifetime of American history trivia neatly tucked away in your brain's nostalgic corner.Buck has gone way beyond this expected diary of anecdotes about the brothers' own Oregon Trail. Extensive research to aid in the planning and implementation of this 21st Century trail trek is brought alive for the reader as though he is riding beside the mule driver. Buck even offers modern trail-side wonders that the travelers of 1840s would not even dreamed about. The Buck Boys are as humorous as they are adventurous. This book is as educational as it is entertaining. Not a book to read rapidly, take it at a mules' walking pace, and enjoy every paragraph, it's that good.I really meant it that this should be at least nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.Never have I said that before, and it is not stated lightly.Thank you Rink and Nick for sharing your exploit.

"Revolutionary love, revolutionary memory and revolutionary analysis are at work in every page written by Mumia Abu-Jamal … His writings are a wake-up call. He is a voice from our prophetic tradition, speaking to us here, now, lovingly, urgently. Black man, old-school jazz man, freedom fighter, revolutionary—his presence, his voice, his words are the writing on the wall."—Cornel West, from the foreword

From the first slave writings to contemporary hip hop, the canon of African American literature offers a powerful counter-narrative to dominant notions of American culture, history and politics. Resonant with voices of prophecy and resistance, the African American literary tradition runs deep with emancipatory currents that have had an indelible impact on the United States and the world. Mumia Abu-Jamal has been one of our most important contributors to this canon for decades, writing from the confines of the U.S. prison system to give voice to those most silenced by chronic racism, impoverishment and injustice.

Writing on the Wall is a selection of more than 100 previously unpublished essays that deliver Mumia Abu-Jamal's essential perspectives on community, politics, power, and the possibilities of social change in the United States. From Rosa Parks to Edward Snowden, from the Trail of Tears to Ferguson, Missouri, Abu-Jamal addresses a sweeping range of contemporary and historical issues. Written mostly during his years of solitary confinement on Death Row, these essays are a testament to Abu-Jamal's often prescient insight, and his revolutionary perspective brims with hope, encouragement and profound faith in the possibility of redemption.

"Greatness meets us in this book, and not just in Mumia's personal courage and character. It's in the writing. This is art with political power, challenging institutional injustice in the U.S. while catalyzing our understanding, memory and solidarities for liberation and love. Writing on the Wall can set the nation aflame—yes, for creating new possible worlds."—Mark Lewis Taylor, Professor of Theology and Culture, Princeton Theological Seminary

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist and author of two best-selling books, Live From Death Row and Death Blossoms.

Johanna Fernández is a Fulbright Scholar and Professor of History at Baruch College in New York City.

Cornel West is a scholar, philosopher, activist and author of over a dozen books including his bestseller, Race Matters. He appears frequently in the media, and has appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher, The Colbert Report, CNN and C-Span as well as Tavis Smiley.

The selections are equal if not better in quality. There is the same delightful anticipation in turning each page to discover what is next and how it is illustrated. However, lists are not as readable as letters, and often one admires a list without wanting to read each item in it.The physical book is also equal in quality to its predecessor, except that there is no dust jacket. These two books are beautifully edited. Usher's introductions to each item are masterpieces in the art of providing pertinent information and emotional content in the fewest possible words. The proofreading appears flawless. My only wish is that the photographs and illustrations had been labeled.

Poor list By Hande Z The size, cover, and format of this book indicate that the publisher intended this book to be a companion to the previously published 'Letters of Note'. I give that book a higher rating strictly because the content of that book is of greater interest to more people (I think). There many general readers of biography who would be keenly interested in letters written by and to their biographical subjects. But only specialist biographical scholars would be interested in random lists made by the subject characters.Lists featured in this book include those made by Marilyn Monroe, Susan Sontag, Sylvia Plath, Christopher Hitchens, Rudyard Kipling, Thelonious Monk (jazz pianist), Walt Whitman, Leonardo da Vinci, and Queen Elizabeth II, and many others. The contents of the lists printed are naturally varied and some are interesting - such as the one from a Mafia member which contains, 'Do not be seen with cops'. The page containing Peter Roget's initial draft Roget's Thesaurus is entitled 'Existence' and written in his own hand with a rudimentary list of various words such as 'reality', reference', and 'relation'. Harry Truman's list seems to be short descriptions of how his year has been - for example, '1920: One happy year; 1921: Going very well'. Scott Fitzgerald has a list of tenses with amusing examples. It is a fine coffee table book but that is about all.

It doesn’t get better than this By Debnance at Readerbuzz It doesn’t get better than this: a collection of memorable and not-so-memorable lists, clever and pedestrian lists, surprising and poignant lists from the famous and the infamous. I lingered over this for days on my first read and then turned back to the front and reread my favorites. Here are some you must take a look at: a list scribbled by JFK’s secretary of possible suspects in his murder...fifty suggestions for the names of the seven dwarves...Sir Isaac Newton’s list of sins he has committed...Marilyn Monroe’s list of dream lovers….Oh, you must read this book.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Easily the best book I've read all year By KRS Expertly written, interesting, and informative. Certainly not a book that will be popular with the "accusation = guilt" Nancy Grace crowd, but a fascinating look at the factors that play into the verdicts. The book not only provides insight into these specific cases, but into the benefits and limitations of the justice system as a whole. I thought I was fairly well versed in how the system works, but I learned quite a bit! Highly recommended.Note: ignore the one star reviews. Yes, people have differences of opinions and if you hate the book, you hate the book, but not a one of them seems to have even *read* the book and instead are using the Amazon reviews as a platform to air their views on the justice system as a whole. As I'm writing this, exactly one one-star review is an amazon verified buyer and even that one chose to give his thoughts on the system as opposed to reviewing the book. A lot of folks seem to be assuming this book is a cheat sheet on how to game the system and that's not really accurate. For one thing, the prosecution also uses trial consultants. For another, this very author also consults for the prosecution. To assume that the use of a trial consultant is moral when the prosecution does it, but immoral when the defense does it is faulty logic. Secondly, he makes it very clear that the major goal of trial consulting for the defense is to ensure that the defendant gets a fair trial with a jury that will look objectively at the evidence. These are things you would know if you read the book.

Part textbook, part memoir, part apologia By bellczar Acquittal by Richard Gabriel is part textbook, part memoir, and part apologia for the author's participation in some of the most controversial jury trials in recent American history. Gabriel is not a lawyer and his entry to the profession of jury consulting came after doing graduate study in communications. A red-diaper baby, Gabriel has heavily salted and peppered his book with a particular brand of social liberalism. Accordingly, Gabriel has done more work for criminal defendants than for the prosecution (although he worked for the U.S. attorney prosecuting Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker, and this case is presented in the book.)The book has a long (50 pp.) introductory chapter giving an overview of different conceptions of justice practiced in America; the role of the jury; and the function of jury consulting. This introductory chapter could serve as a course reading in a political science or criminal justice course. The main message of the book is that it is more important who gets left off a jury than who is included, and most of the work of a jury consultant is identifying for the benefit of the parties and the lawyers which prospective jurors need most to be removed from the pool. Repeatedly, Gabriel says he was looking for jurors who were "smart, skeptical, and independent." A secondary message is that pre-trial public opinion polling, focus group work, and jury questionnaires should also inform the themes that lawyers use in arguing their cases. For example, the lawyers prosecuting O.J. Simpson decided that domestic abuse would be the main theme of their case, despite their own jury consultants telling them that this message did not resonate with the kind of juror that dominated the jury pool in the case. Meanwhile, the defense team ran with a theme of police misconduct in part because of the work of their own jury consultants, including Gabriel.Gabriel conceives of four kinds of justice:1. Capital J Justice, the theoretical, idealistic kind expounded in the Constitution and the Federalist Papers;2. lowercase justice, the practical kind practiced by lawyers, judges, law enforcement, clerks, scriveners, and paralegals;3. JUSTICE!, the theatrical kind developed not only in fiction like CSI, but for news programs like 48 Hours and cable news legal commentaries;4. Justice occurring in the minds of trial jurors as they seek to render accurate verdicts.Gabriel next devotes lengthy chapters to six prominent cases in which he had a role: the O.J. Simpson murder trial; the prostitution trial of Heidi Fleiss; the prosecution of Gov. Jim Guy Tucker stemming from the Whitewater matter in Arkansas; the prosecution of Rex Shelby and other principals of an Enron subsidiary pertaining to the collapse of that company; the Phil Spector murder trial; and the Casey Anthony capital murder trial. It is in these chapters that Gabriel seems very defensive over his role in influencing the outcomes, if that is indeed what he did. Many previous books have rehashed the dueling jury consultants used in the Simpson case, and the consensus is that not only did Gabriel and his team do a better job of preparing Simpson's defense team for the trial than the prosecution jury consultants did, the defense lawyers also heeded the consultants' advice, while the prosecution team basically ignored the advice. This is illustrated with the example of successful and unsuccessful trial themes mentioned above. Also, research by the prosecution jury consultants found that jurors reacted especially negatively to lead prosecutor Marcia Clark, but Clark and her superiors ignored this.Gabriel also argues that the very length of the Simpson trial worked against a conviction. The trial lasted over eight months from opening statements to closing arguments. The lead criminalist testified for nine days. Gabriel argues that this underscored the defense's argument that substantial errors were made in evidence collection, whereas keeping the testimony briefer would not have had this effect. Overwhelmingly, experts (including talking heads) who have commented on the Simpson verdict since it was decided opine that Simpson is guilty. Gabriel tellingly uses phrases like "Simpson's guilt" to indicate that he too is in this camp. In his final remark on the case, Gabriel eyebrow-raisingly invokes the names of four convicted and executed murderers in defending the verdict.Gabriel downplays the seriousness of the charges against the largely-forgotten Fleiss (she headed an L.A. prostitution ring); maintains that Shelby and his co-defendants were innocent in the collapse of Enron; and argues that at the very least, reasonable doubt existed as the guilt of Phil Spector and Casey Anthony. (He claims to have consulted for Anthony for free in order to spare her from a death sentence.)Despite the obscure level of most of what Gabriel writes about, the book flows smoothly and is relatively easy reading. Gabriel's favorite word seems to be emergent ("coming into existence"). The book seriously needed a fact-checker. Gabriel makes many sloppy errors, such as the dates key events happened. These call into question the accuracy of other statements in the book. The book is a useful contribution to an understanding of the emergent field of jury consulting. However, as a reader and a political scientist, I would prefer to read and assign my students something written by someone with less of a stake in the process and the outcome of some of recent history's most controversial cases.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Obviously not legitimate By Toni You can see from the description of this book that it's written by an idiot; an idiot that has hired somebody to use bots to get reviews giving it 5 stars. This is a familiar pattern with these free kindle prime programming books. Lots of random reviews stating that the book helped them get a job, often written in similarly broken English

Carey Not a bad book if you're looking to cheat on your homework. However, in terms of general technique and examples, it's a bit lacking. Meaning, this is a book full of source code copied from the Internet, by the look of things. It might be worth it if you're trying to skip through a class, but otherwise, it serves as a bundle of source code with little explanation, discussion of technique, or applicability in any arena other than academia.
