Everything that they mention and suggest comes with another idea I haven't thought of, and I am a very seasoned traveler. It is also amazing because I have felt like every gap year book I have picked up has been geared towards the UK. This book is finally geard towards everyone and it is the first time that as an American I haven't had to just dismiss many of the things in the book because well, I don't have a UK passport and I can't go find the consulate in London. Etc. Amazing book, definitely worth a read if you are planning on taking a grand adventure!

Although it is mainly geared at YA who have recently graduated and have not travelled all that much or at College or University students who are planning on taking a year off and just "see the world", this book is also a wealth of information on the topic of travelling itself with the added bonus of being original in the destinations that it covers. The Big Trip is also LOADED with absolutely beautiful pictures, I found myself oohiinng and ahhhing at some of the shots in this book - makes me want to hop the next plane and go explore the big beautiful world that is out there. While these are the more "dreamy" aspects of this book, there is also a very practical look at travelling and many, many great suggestions that most people would never really think of. Some of the chapter includde:A very in-depth overview of many innovative destinations (and why they are of interest to YA);Valuable advice on budgeting, volunteering and overall travelling as a whole. As I was reading (devouring this book) it made me wish that I had all these travel opportunities when I was at an age where travelling and exploring where my biggest goals in life!!!This book is a wealth of information and, if like me, you are not really in a position to explore the world right now, it is also a great book to daydream by.

Great book for 25 and Under Crowd By Laurie McFarlane Although there is a great deal of useful information in the book the audience for the book is clearly high school and college age students planning a gap year. For example there is a whole section dedicated to talking with your parents about the trip. It would have been nice to have a chapter aimed at older adults looking for a career break or perhaps Lonely Planet can put out a separate book addressing older traveler concerns. I would say if you have been in the workforce any length of time or are looking at retirement you might to look elsewhere. That being said there is a lot of great information, testimonials from travelers and practical information for the nuts and bolts of traveling (Visas, Budgeting, ect.) The book is also easy to navigate and an enjoyable read.

SECOND EDITION! Note: This edition has been revised to account for current events and re-edited.                                                                                                                                       The Chinese Have Captured Seattle!                                                                                                                                                                                          In 1949, the government of the Republic of China fled to the island of Taiwan. For nearly 70 years, mainland China wanted to take the island back and unite the nation under one flag, the Communist flag. Their desire was thwarted by U.S. support for Taiwan, until the Chinese conceived and executed the perfect plan to keep the U.S. out of the war for Taiwan, an invasion of Seattle!                                                                                                                                                                                   Yesterday, China captured the cities of Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, in a Pearl Harbor-like surprise attack. The Chinese also captured six American nuclear warheads and are not afraid to use them on American soil, if necessary to keep the United States out of the war in the Pacific.                                                                                                                                                                                      Without U.S. aid, the fall of Taiwan seems imminent, and now even Seattle seems lost to the Chinese. America's hopes are riding on a shot-down FA-18 pilot, a retired Navy SEAL, and a platoon of Army Rangers.                                                                                                                                                                       If that's all America has going for it, all hope seems lost!

Occupied Seattle (Volume 2), by Chris Kennedy

Review "...a definitive page turner and I kept reading until the wee small hours. The author is a gifted wordsmith with the ability to paint a lucid picture of the scene and to flesh out characters in a believable environment."  - Trevor Hall"...every bit as good as the first and then some. Excellent sequel and a very good read...!"  - Bluesman9600"a fairly realistic  picture of a likely future conflict. It may not come in the time frame of the book, but war with China will come and it will be brutal. As someone who has served at Ft Lewis, I thought the setting and the deployment of forces was spot on. The combat scenarios, while stretched from time to time told the grittyness of the battle and the individual heroics required in war. Soldiers (generically) fight for each other and with inspired leadership . This author earned my five star rating because he got it right!                    - Capt. Pete"This sequel to "Red Tide" is just as fast moving and exciting as the original. Each time you think the mission is over another comes up. The characters are not invincible, and as in real life they are not expendable. Thanks Chris, for presenting a real life possibility, with a real life solution."                         -raday

From the Author I'm excited to present the Second Edition of this book. Occupied Seattle 2.0 is a cleaner, tighter version of the original, updated to keep up with current events and meticulously re-edited. I know you will enjoy it!

From the Inside Flap It's Payback Time!"You're really going to like this," Master Chief said, looking back. The assembled group looked back. Nothing happened, except that the first helicopter lifted from the deck of the ship and started in pursuit."What am I going to like?" asked Top.Everyone looked at the Master Chief. He looked back at the ship. Nothing happened."Wait for it," he encouraged them. The second helicopter began to lift.Nothing happened. And then the ship exploded.

Agejew At the end of Red Tide, the prequel to Occupied Seattle, the Chinese have taken over Seattle to create a distraction for their main objective - the recovery of the country of Taiwan. Occupied Seattle details the American heroics used not only to defend the U.S., but also to thwart the Chinese attack on Taiwan. Mr. Kennedy does an excellent job of combinig technical details with a page-turning narrative. Readers will get an adrenaline rush as "Calvin" Hobbs and Ryan O'Leary lead an improvised unit on their mission to free Seattle from the Chinese.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A must have By Kindle Customer Very, very believable. The author is a great story teller and his characters are awesome and in depth. The story is fast paced and the action us non-stop

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Prophetic? Let's hope not. But required reading for war gamers. By Amazon Customer Chris Kennedy's two books on the invasion and occupation of Seattle by China are not only plausible but the notion of invading and occupying American and Canadian cities along the Pacific Coast has long been a topic of discussion at the Academy of Military Science for the People's Republic of China. Kennedy's story concept has also been validated by recent news items such as this one:[...]That said, China is absolutely, admittedly, and undeniably preparing for war against the United States and Kennedy's books should serve as a warning much the same as General Billy Mitchell once warned of an aerial attack on Pearl Harbor by the forces of Japan. Only a fool would dismiss Kennedy's story as fanciful speculation. The plots and subplots are well researched and well written and it's clear that Kennedy has either done detailed homework or he's visited the places in the two stories in the Occupied Seattle series. One more thing: The vast majority of the books I buy get donated to charity or given away after I finish them. Kennedy's books will join my Tom Clancy collection as books I will read and read again.

From the visionary author of The Genesis Quest, a “wildly imaginative” (Greg Bear) science fiction novel about a young man’s struggle for survival on a comet made of ice. In Donald Moffitt’s brilliant cosmic adventure, Torris, son of the Facemaker, knows only his small community at the base of the great Tree on a comet with almost no gravity or atmosphere. Torris’s daily struggle for survival includes harvesting frozen air to keep breathing, dodging flutterbeasts, and hunting meatbeasts for food.   When the time comes to make his vision quest to the top of the Tree, Torris is completely unprepared for what he finds: a thieving and hostile fellow quester; Ning, a female hunter in search of food to save her family on a neighboring comet; and humans from a massive starship that has spent billions of years crossing the galaxy from Earth’s solar system. Perfect for fans of Arthur C. Clarke, Larry Niven, and Peter F. Hamilton, Children of the Comet is an enthralling space odyssey about a young man grappling with unexpected cultural differences and learning to adapt in the face of an uncertain and rapidly changing fantastical future.

Review “A perfect companion for this new age of cometary exploration. Wildly imaginative but scientifically plausible, this is a perfect choice for those who love Niven and Pournelle, Gregory Benford, Vernor Vinge, or David Brin. Excellent!” —Greg Bear, author of The Forge of God and Eon “Astonishing . . . [The scientific accuracy is that of a] professional scientist.” —Arthur C. Clarke on The Jupiter Theft   “Enthralling, mind-boggling, magnificent! Science fiction in the grand tradition . . . a magical mystery tour.” —Locus on the Genesis saga   “A really audacious idea.” —Locus on A Gathering of Stars   “Fans of Larry Niven, Peter Hamilton, and Arthur C. Clarke will find more than ample excitement in Moffitt’s novels—they’re packed with ideas and the true spirit of high-tech adventure.” —Greg Bear   “An author of numerate, physics-oriented, fast-moving hard sf adventures . . . a competence with mythopoeically large scales and calculations . . . The focus of the tales . . . is firmly on the wide-scale action and the physics.” —The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

About the Author Donald Moffitt (1931–2014) was born in Boston. It takes place in the far flung future, like 6 BILLION years in the future. Humans have left our galaxy (mostly), and have been returning at different times. There is a lot of time dilation type effects going on, might make it a little difficult for some people to follow, although the author does explain events and scientific concepts pretty well. The concept of trees growing on comets in space is evidently a real theory. From some time in the 20's or 30's I think. Which is is interesting in itself because the trees would need a little help via genetic manipulation which wasn't even a thing back then, but we can do now. With no gravity to speak of holding them back, trees would be able to grow very tall, and since they make oxygen as a by product, it's not that far fetched to think of humans being able to live on them symbiotically like the bugs, bats and other animals that would and could do so.Seems like a good book for a series, unfortunately it won't happen as the author has passed away. Perhaps someone else could pick it up and move it along, that would depend on the authors estate and other people's interest I suppose.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A hopeful view of human destiny By TChris Giant trees, designed to grow in a vacuum, are riding on the backs of comets in the Oort cloud. Originally intended to supply a source of wood for use as building materials, the trees spread from comet to comet, turning the Oort cloud into a forest. But that all happened long before the novel starts. The novel begins with a young man named Torris who is about to climb to the crown of the tree on which his tribe dwells. The climb is both a rite of passage and a religious ceremony (the climb involves hallucinatory dreams, making it a sort of vision quest), but it is also a way of whittling the weak from the gene pool. The tree is filled with dangers (creatures akin to snakes and spiders) but the tree and its beasts provide sources of food and air and warmth that allow careful climbers to succeed in their journey. The beginning of Children of the Comet suggests that the novel is an alien adventure story, but an alternating storyline involves humans who, having traveled close to the speed of light in their generations ship, are seeding another galaxy with human life while arguing about whether they should (1) quit while they’re still alive, (2) venture on to seed some more planets, (3) send the ship and a skeletal crew back to the Milky Way to find out what has become of a presumably long-dead Earth, or (4) try to travel to the boundary of the universe to see what’s there. When it began, the planet-seeding mission seemed like a good response to the discovery that an older alien race known as the First Ones had already colonized the Milky Way, leaving little local real estate for humans to claim. Now the factions that are divided between options (3) and (4) are at each other’s throats. The two alternating storylines take place at different locations in the universe and are separated by billions of years. But time is relative, so readers know that the two storylines will eventually intersect. The questions posed by the intersection are: Why are the humans on the ship and the humans riding around on comet trees so much alike? Separated by billions of years, why haven’t the comet dwellers evolved themselves out of recognizable existence? Answers ensue and, to Donald Moffitt’s credit, they seem plausible.Physicists in this story are frequently explaining principles of physics to characters who already understand them, which is a way of educating the reader but not a great technique for writing a novel. Explanatory lectures given in the ship’s auditorium later in the novel are a more natural way of conveying the science behind the story. Most of the time, Children of the Comet is an imaginative adventure story that is driven by, but not bogged down in, astrophysics, evolutionary biology, paleontology, and anthropology. The ending, on the other hand, tends to be a ramble of ideas disguised as plot. In fact, the plot gets lost in the last few chapters as Moffitt strives to give the novel a grand scale.Still, this is an interesting novel by a veteran sf writer. Published posthumously, Moffitt’s last novel reflects his decidedly hopeful view of human destiny as well as his interest in the ways that various branches of science intersect. I liked his Genesis novels more than this one, but I was nevertheless entertained by Children of the Comet.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. interesting premise and a satisfying story By She Treads Softly Children of the Comet by Donald Moffit is a highly recommended science fiction story set six billion years in the future. This novel covers two different sets of human until they meet. The first group has been colonizing a tree growing on a comet in the The Oort Cloud and is now a primitive society who have adapted to life on their tree/comet. Torris is a young man who must climb the Great Tree on his dream/vision quest. The second set of humans is on a space ship colonizing the solar system after beings known as the First Ones forced the human race to leave the Milky Way. Humans have developed the Higgs boso drive, though, so they are able to travel near light speed. The ship Time's Beginning was launched from the USA and after seeding several colonies there are two factions that want to control the ship. One wants to go back to Earth's solar system and settle near it while the other wants to head for the end of the universe. The opening quote explains growing trees on comets:"How high can a tree on a comet grow? The answer is surprising. On any celestial body whose diameter is of the order of ten miles or less, the force of gravity is so weak that a tree can grow infinitely high. Ordinary wood is strong enough to lift its own weight to an arbitrary distance from the center of gravity. This means that from a comet of ten-mile diameter, trees can grow out for hundreds of miles, collecting the energy of sunlight from an area thousands of times as large as the area of the comet itself. Countless millions of comets are out there, amply supplied with water, carbon, and nitrogen - the basic constituents of living cells. They lack only two essential requirements for human settlement, namely warmth and air. And now biological engineering will come to our rescue. We shall learn how to grow trees on comets. - Freeman Dyson"I enjoyed Children of the Comet. Donald Moffit (1931- 2014) wrote two of my favorite science fiction novels and so I am predisposed to enjoy this, his final novel. While I can see that Children of the Comet needed some more work (and kept reminding me of Niven's The Integral Trees), I did find it an interesting premise and a satisfying story. The comet/tree civilization is far more intriguing than the spaceship crew and their politics so I did wish that more time was spent with them. There are also a few characters that are added in the middle of the book that should have been present right at the start, which is another clue that the novel was a work in progress.Disclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Open Road Intergrated Media for review purposes.

I had previously purchased this work from another site but when it came free with a new cover I figured I'd pick it up here too. I re-read this in one night :)It's novella length, hot, steamy, romance with a tiny bit of suspense thrown in for good measure. The characters are well developed and interesting. It's also set as a sci-fi ... so space travel, humanoid alien races and all ... which appeals to the nerd girl in me :) It's well worth the read. THIS IS EROTIC ROMANCE. If you like your romances with vanilla sex or no sex at all ... THIS ISN'T THE BOOK FOR YOU.

Mikkhael Dreyfus destiny becomes forever altered after an unforseeable tragedy. Set in the year 2084, the story moves from a resource tired, overpopulated Earth where human life has once again become a galaxy-wide commodity, to Mars where the largest ever unchecked corporate entity known as Mars Industries rules the red planet. Greed and the pursuit of profit regardless of consequence see millions of Earth's castoffs enslaved, laboring forgotten in the mines deep underneath the Martian landscape. Resentment breeds faster than rats down in the mines as the enslaved workers seek a way to restore the basic tenants of humanity that have been stripped from them and a rebellion ensues. Desperate to ensure the mass cargo freighters leave Mars full of minerals headed for Earth and return with new chattel for the mines, Mars Industries organizes the largest and most powerful military ever created, the Planetary Defense Forces or PDF. They will stop at nothing as they fight not only for unmitigated greed and power, but also for the right to steer the destiny of all mankind. Civil war ignites across the red planet as disparate rebel groups form, launching Mech armor against the Mars Industries puppet armies. For years, battles rage as neither side is able to deal the finishing blow. Now, a stalemate has ensued, and the combatants on both sides have dug in across static lines. The enslaved citizens of Mars watch, desperately yearning for a time in their life when basic humanity can be restored to them, pleading for a hero, looking to each new sunrise for a savior from their oppression. WILL YOU STAND? WILL YOU FIGHT? WELCOME TO THE MECHAVERSE

From the Author This was created with the visual aspects in mind, and as such is ideal for a future video game or movie. I would absolutely love to sell the rights with that idea in mind. Until then, I am going to remain self-published in order that I can continue developing this series and stories as best I can. If you want to see more, check out my dedicated website jbeverhart.com

From the Inside Flap Starkindler is book 1 in the MechaVerse series, all rights are reserved by the author, and I have specifically chosen to self-publish to retain those rights for the time being. Join the conversation at JBEverhart.com

About the Author J.B. Everhart is the pen name I am writing my military science fiction under. I have the typical author background, a huge variety of odd meaningless jobs as I wait for the writing opportunity to come along. I am absolutely excited to finally go public with this project in hopes of becoming either a screen writer, or a storyline writer. In the meantime, I will continue to develop and write this story.

A great entry level novel for this young author By Ezraxiv A great entry level novel for this young author, Starkindler is an action-packed, tightly paced Mech drama set on Mars in the not too distant future. While the book is a little light getting started to establish characters, do not overlook the content of the first chapters When I finished this I had to go back and review some and it really elevated the whole book for me. It wasn't any massive twist in particular, no crazy deus ex machina to make this novel interesting. A staggering blitz of detail and the furious pacing of the book kept me enthralled and it only gets better and better through the book.. Once the action starts, it ebbs just enough to let you catch your breath before more intense tech-savvy, smartly written prose. Truly, the last 5 or so chapters are so well done, it really ends on a cliffhanger and you hold your breath to the last word. One of the best things I liked was that a lot of the great tech used in the book is right on the cutting edge of current technology. Few flights of fancy to try to carry the imagination in this first of a hopefully long career for the author, just solid excitement!

This John Grisham meets Tony Hillerman-style legal thriller, set in and around the vast Navajo reservation in the American Southwest, is fiction that became fact even as the author was writing it. Danny Whitehorse, a struggling attorney from Farmington, NM suddenly finds his tiny law office inundated with hundreds of clients from the reservation, none of whom can pay his fees. They all have the same complaint. Gannon Oil Company, the area's largest employer, has suddenly stopped paying monthly royalties on natural gas wells drilled on their tribal allotment lands. Gannon claims the wells have gone dry, but Danny suspects they are still in production. All he has to do is prove it. Meanwhile, the well shutdown has spawned the creation of a potentially dangerous para-military group on the reservation calling itself the NALM. Their objective, get the wells turned back on immediatly, or rid the reservation of them completely. When the NALM sabotages a Gannon well, Danny is forced to file a class-action lawsuit against the company to try and head off any further explosions. It is an act that rings the very bells of hell against him. He is attacked and pursued all across the Four Corners area by Gannon henchmen. Danny quickly determines that his greatest challenge will not be to win his lawsuit, but simply to stay alive long enough to get it to the courthouse.

Hillerman Looking Over My Shoulder By Amazon Customer I have enjoyed reading Tony Hillerman novels, and was sad when he died, because it didn't seem as if there would be any more like his. Then I read "Wages of Greed," which was written by Steven Clark, who talked to Hillerman personally and got his encouragement in his writing endeavors. While it's not exactly like Hillerman's writing, as each author is individual, as I read about Native American lawyer Danny Whitehorse taking action against a cheating oil company, it seemed as if Hillerman was looking over my shoulder.I look forward to the second in this series. Keep on writing, Mr. Clark!

Used a few of these recipes on the friends and family for a party I recently had. Not one person who tasted my canned recipes didn't ask me how to make it. Ended up having my cousin force me to let him borrow the book. His pantry is fully stocked! Trust me this book will turn anyone into a canning enthusiast.

    About the Author

    Duncan M. McGreggor

Duncan M. McGreggor, having programmed with GOTOs in the 1980s, has made up for that through community service by making open source contributions for more than 20 years. He has spent a major part of the past 10 years dealing with distributed and scientific computing (in languages ranging from Python, Common Lisp, and Julia to Clojure and Lisp Flavored Erlang). In the 1990s, after serving as a linguist in the US Army, he spent considerable time working on projects related to MATLAB and Mathematica, which was a part of his physics and maths studies at the university. Since the mid 2000s, matplotlib and NumPy have figured prominently in many of the interesting problems that he has solved for his customers. With the most recent addition of the IPython Notebook, matplotlib and the suite of the Python scientific computing libraries remain some of his most important professional tools.

Even though the book covers installation and gives the fundamentals about basic plots, it is best suited for intermediate users in both Python and matplotlib. In fact, the authors are very class-oriented, making a fair familiarity with object-oriented programming something of a prerequisite. However, if you have those prerequisites the book is a worthy investment as you will be able to take full advantage of matplotlib.Even though the topics covered are advanced, from the matplotlib architecture to deploying it in Docker and implementing in parallel computing, they are presented in a clear and concise way. Yet the breadth of applications covered is quite comprehensive, and the authors are able to articulate all the different chapters so that the learning feels like a natural progression instead of trying to cram very disparate subjects. The code is elegant and relatively short, facilitating its reading; and the authors explanations for it are very easy to follow. In particular, the chapter of big data visualization definitely goes beyond what is presented in other books that also cover the same topic, and the implementation explanations are much better. The fact that the book is under 300 pages long is a huge plus. The only chapter I felt that wasn't as easy to follow is the one on GUI deployment. One aspect I really enjoyed about the book is the multiple explanations about the different approaches to creating figures with matplotlib. When you are learning Python and matplotlib you see some books that use pyplot, while others use pylab. Or some like the ax. synthax while others stick to the plt. one. This is the first book in which I see a presentation of all those possibilities, along with their advantages and disadvantages. By the same token, if you are confused as to when to use Seaborn vs yhat ggplot, what's the point of NetworkX, what is ModGrapher, etc. you will find all those explanations here, along with suggestions for their appropriate application.

Very good book to improve your matplotlib skills By Loris I bought this book with the goal of improving my basic knowledge of matplotlib: while the creation of basic plots is straightforward, I found it difficult to modify the default behaviors of the library, and I faced problems in plotting large amount of data. I can safely say that this book helped me to solve both issues. As the author mentions in the book, a prior knowledge of matplotlib will definitely makes the reading more enjoiable. The book begins by giving an historical overview of matplotlib and by introducing two popular projects, seaborn and pandas. The chapters that follow describes the matplotlib internal architecture and its API. Next the author illustrates how events are handled in matplotlib and how to create interactive plots. The fifth chapter is dedicated to high-level plotting and shows how to create plots with third-party libraries, such as networkX, pandas, and seaborn, which wrap matplotlib functionality. The chapter also briefly introduces Bokeh, a library that offers a series of improvements over matplotlib and focus its attention on the web browser. In this chapter the author did a very good job in showing how a good visualization of the data is crucial in data analysis. The next chapter covers the customization (and the configuration) of matplotlib. Here the author shows how to create complex layouts where different plots are combined in the same figure. In the eight chapter the author explains how to plot huge amount of data by illustrating different strategies that range from using tools such as numpy's memmap function and pytables, to decimating data (removal of a fraction of the data). The last chapter shows how it is possible to improve the performance of matplotlib by using a clustered environment.Last but not least, the authors provided a GitHub repository with the example code and notebooks of each chapter of the book.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. After washing the sweat from his body, Stavros Konstantinos wrapped a towel around his hips and walked out on his terrace. The view of the blue Aegean from his private villa atop pine-covered Mount Ypsarion always renewed him.Because of another of many such impasses, today's board meeting in Thessaloniki on the Greek mainland had ended early for him. His proposal for a new product to be manufactured and marketed by the Konstantinos Marble Corporation had met with total defeat. At that point a blackness had swept through him. The sickness that had been coming on for the past year had finally caught up to him. Depression was a feeling he'd never known before, but he couldn't label it as anything else.Knowing that his family members who made up the majority of the board still lived and operated as if it were 1950, he hadn't expected any other result. With the exception of his elder brother, Leon, everyone else down to the last cousin was against any new innovations and refused to hear him out. They were afraid of change. That was fine with him. In his free time he'd had a new plant built on his own land. Now that the family had refused to listen to him and wanted no part of it, he and his two partners, Theo and Zander, would be starting production on Monday.Since he'd gotten nowhere with the members of the board, he'd told them he was resigning from his position as managing director of the corporation immediately. As of now, all ties were severed, including his position on the board. He suggested they should start looking for a replacement ASAPJust saying those words helped to drive some of the blackness away. He'd been in a cage, but no longer. While every member sat there in utter shock at his announcement, he excused himself from the meeting in Thessaloniki and took the helicopter back to his villa on Thas-sos Island. En route, he checked his phone messages and discovered another text message waiting for him from Tina Nasso, the woman he'd stopped seeing three months ago.Since he'd never responded to any of her messages, why would she text him again? Was she so desperate? This separation from u can't go on, Stavros. You've been so cruel. I haven't seen u or even heard your voice in three months! You haven't texted me back once. I have to talk to you! This is important. Tina. This text meant she was still pressing for him to change his mind. His black brows came together. Christina Nasso, the woman his parents had expected him to marry, didn't know how to let something go that could never have worked out. With no intention of answering this text either, he deleted it.Parental pressure had driven him to spend some time with her, but there was no attraction on his part. He had the gut feeling her parents were still pressuring her because they'd wanted an alliance between both families. Just as his parents had planned on him marrying her, it was no secret the prominent Nasso shipping family from Kavala wanted Stavros for their son-in-law. Both family businesses were closely connected. But when she'd wanted a deeper intimacy with him, he couldn't pretend feelings he didn't have. Though he hadn't wanted to hurt her, he'd had to tell her the truth. He wasn't in love with her and they both needed to be free.Stavros had told his parents the same thing after they'd demanded an explanation. His great mistake was humoring them from the beginning. Never again. They could wait, but a marriage with Tina wouldn't happen.Today he'd felt the consequences of his actions. His refusal to go on seeing her had caused a serious rift, one he'd felt at the board meeting when his father had influenced his uncles and cousins to close ranks against his new business venture instead of embracing it.As for Tina, his hope was that one day she'd meet someone her family would approve of. She was an attractive woman with much to offer a man who wanted to marry her. But Stavros wasn't that man. One day, Tina would realize it and move on. Like salt that had lost its savor, every relationship he'd had with a woman had been missing the essential ingredient for happiness. The only thing that brought him any pleasure right now was spending every bit of time on his new business. Stavros's company wouldn't be in competition with his family's, but there would be fireworks when they found out he'd gone ahead with production. One of theirs was doing something on his own and they couldn't tolerate it. But it shouldn't be a surprise to them. He rarely bowed to the dictates of his autocratic father or his great-uncles.For his mother's sake, he'd tried where Tina was concerned. But once she'd learned that her younger son wasn't enamored of the Nasso girl, he'd found disfavor in her eyes too. He took a deep breath. Today had turned out to be a day like no other. From here on out, his life was going to go in directions no one would be happy about except him.So be it!On his way to the kitchen to quench his thirst, his cell phone rang. If it was Tina calling because he hadn't answered her text, she would find out exactly how he felt when she realized he intended to go on ignoring any and all phone calls or texts from her.But when he looked at the caller ID, he saw it was the manager of quarry three on Thassos Island phoning on his private line. He clicked on. "What's up, Gus?""Kyrie Konstantinos?" Kyrie being the Greek version of Mr. "A situation with one of the student-teacher groups from PanHellenic Tours has arisen. A teenager is missing. Now the police are involved."This was all Stavros needed to hear, especially since he'd been the only one on the board in favor of allowing tour groups to visit the quarry. The program had been working well since March with no incidents, until today…Stavros gripped the phone tighter. "Have the police started a search?"When he heard the particulars, he grimaced. A helicopter would have an almost impossible struggle to see any movement beneath the dense green canopy of the forest."What do you advise, Kyrie?""I'll be there ASAP."He returned to the bedroom and dressed quickly before he dashed out the door to his car.It had been his hope the quarry experience would broaden the students' education and spread the word about job opportunities.Forty percent of the marble in Greece came from an almost inexhaustible supply in the Thassos region, much of it being shipped to China, Asia and Europe. Because of this abundant natural resource, more jobs were available, which would improve the Grecian economy, a major aim of his. With that argument, his grandfather, who'd recently passed away, had been persuaded that the free publicity generated by various tour groups from foreign climes might be a good idea. At that point the rest of the board offered their reluctant acceptance on the condition that it would be for a trial basis only. One problem with the tours and they'd be given no more access. This particular quarry—one of many owned by the family throughout northern Greece—was on the other side of the summit, just ten minutes away. He knew the police lieutenant well and would ask his cooperation in keeping the press at bay for as long as possible. The crisis needed to be averted before the media got hold of it. Once they turned it into an international circus, the island would be crawling with unwanted spectators. Though the staff at the quarry wasn't responsible for what had happened, the public wouldn't see it that way. Publicity of this kind was never good.To his mind, the teacher was ultimately responsible for this type of situation and could be facing charges. Six high school groups of six on the bus with their individual teachers? How hard was it to keep track of half a dozen students?Gus had said the teen's teacher was a younger, nice-looking American woman. Maybe too young to handle a bunch of teens? Stavros pressed on the gas as he rounded a curve in the road. He was in a mood.Once the family found out about this crisis, they'd put a stop to the tour groups. Since he'd announced his resignation from the corporation and the board, he would no longer have a say. But for the time being he felt the responsibility heavily. Someone's teenage son was missing in a foreign land and needed to be found.Panagia was Andrea Linford's favorite village on the Greek island of Thassos. After flying from Thessaloniki to the nearby airport of Keramoti on the mainland, she'd come the rest of the way on the ferry to Thassos, the capital city many referred to as Limenas. From the water, the island looked like a floating forest because of the pines and olive groves covering it.She'd rented a car and driven to Panagia, ten kilometers away. Named after the Virgin Mary, it was built on the side of the mountain. From the wooden terraces of the villas with their painted ceilings and schist roofs, one had a fantastic view of the bay and the sea beyond, where other emerald-green mountains rose to fill the eye. The sight of clear, ice-cold water bubbling up from the natural springs to run down alongside the narrow streets delighted her.Andrea had spent time in its church of the Virgin Mary, which had been built in l831. She loved its impressive baronial style, constructed by stones from the ruins of ancient temples. The exterior and cupola were a pale blue and white, absolutely exquisite. She'd been in a lot of churches around the world, but the interior of this particular church was like a fabulous treasure. It contained a banneret dating from the time of the Crusades. She felt there was a spiritual essence she hadn't found in other churches. If she were ever to get married, this would be the spot she would choose, but of course that was a fantasy, just like the village spread out before her.Today she didn't have time to linger. For the past year and a half, Andrea had worked for PanHellenic Tours, in their main office located in Thessaloniki. They were one of the biggest tour operators in Greece. Having obtained her humanities degree from the university there, she had been hired to do translations and help develop tour itineraries by researching everything thoroughly.Andrea was the person who'd first suggested the company include a tour of the quarry she found fascinating. Her boss, Sakis, was so taken with her idea, he'd made it part of their latest itineraries for this year. But word had gotten back to him that there'd been an incident involving an American student visiting the marble quarry on Thassos. The boy had gone missing and the police had been called in.

Stavros feels irrelevant to the family business and ends up calling it quits and ends up seeking some down time on his family island. While there he ends of becoming involved in a search for a teenager who went missing through one his family's tour outings. During the search he meets Andrea, a tour guide involved in the search. They start to fall in love. Will it last after their task is complete? I was given an ARC of this story for my honest opinion. Although the story was slow moving, it was a good and deep read.

The entire board except his brother said no to his concept that they leave 1950 behind to join the twenty-first century before it is too late. Thus feeling ill from his latest rejection, Stavros resigns from the firm before fleeing the mainland to his villa on Thassos Island to regroup just before he and his partners Theo and Zander begin production. Adding to his misery is a former girlfriend Christina Nasso refuses to accept it is over. When a teenage student Darren on the PanHellenic Tours he and his family sponsors disappears, Stavros joins the search while wondering how incompetent a teacher could be to lose any of the six students under his or her watch. Though not the teacher involved and knowing Darren alone is responsible for his vanishing, tour guide planner Andrea Linford feels guilty anyway. She teams up with Stavros searching along with others for the missing boy. As they fall in love, each wonders whether their relationship will survive the end of the mission and her loyalty to her loving father. The Renegade Billionaire opens with an exciting start involving depression and a runaway, but decelerates half way into the storyline before regaining speed to the finish. Our two guides take the armchair audience on a vibrant tour of Mount Ypsarion, the Aegean and the rest of the Greek Isle. Contemporary fans will root for the stay in Greece patriot and the globetrotting Colorado native to make it.Harriet Klausner

Hardin Ordered for my mother, she liked it very much, also liked the large print but did not discuss the details of the story. She likes the stories with love interest but not into the sex content or violence or vampires or sci-fi, or - well, you get the idea.
