Phil Ballard, the author of various Sams Teach Yourself titles, graduated in 1980 with an honors degree in electronics from the University of Leeds, England. My family lives in a rural area and have gone for 23 days without electricity and what the author says about being prepared is true. We found out really fast that 3 days without water was worse than 23 days without electricity. And we filled every container we had with water before the county water tank drained dry. I will use this information to make even better storage use of my "things".

It hit a lot of buttons for me, as I, in what is now called prepping. Only just canning, dehydrating, smoking, curing, to last until it was time to do it all again. We called it living life. The kerosene lanterns, emergency candles, were part of the just in case. I assumed everyone lived this way. I didn't find out, until I moved to CA, that most people don't live that way. This is a book to introduce this lifestyle, to others, without scaring them to death. They really need to know how to do this, and relearn skills, that have been lost to quite a few of us. Grab it, and read it, then use it to make others aware. Share your knowledge, and skills, to help them out.

It made me think about the day I realized that I too might be a prepper. What the author has done, is tell his own personal journey and gives excellent advice on what, how, why etc when it comes to prepping and gives you his own list of items/tools/priorities so you can develop your own. 5 stars, because Amazon won't let me give it 6.

About the Author

Erin Ruel is associate professor of sociology and director of graduate studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. She received her PhD in sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2003. In 2003, Erin took a postdoctoral position at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the Center for Demography of Health and Aging. While there, she continued to hone her survey research skills on the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. Soon after arriving in Atlanta to take an assistant professor position at Georgia State University (GSU) in 2005, she began the Urban Health Initiative, a longitudinal survey study of public housing residents facing involuntary relocation with GSU colleagues. Erin was principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health study on the health outcomes of relocated public housing residents and co-investigator on two National Science Foundation grants, examining social disorganization and social support for public housing residents. She employs quantitative and mixed methods to examine health disparities and the health consequences of racial residential segregation, neighborhood disadvantage, housing, and socioeconomic status. Ruel has published in numerous journals, including Demography, Social Forces, Social Science Research, Health and Place, Journal of Housing Studies, Cities, Sociology Compass, Journal of Adolescent Health, and Journal of Urban Health.

William E. Wagner, III, PhD, is Professor of Sociology and Health Science at California State University Channel Islands. Prior to coming to CSU Channel Islands, Dr. Wagner served as a member of the faculty and Director of the Institute for Social and Community Research at California State University Bakersfield. He completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Wagner also holds undergraduate degrees in Mathematics as well as Anthropology/Sociology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, as well as an MPH degree (Master of Public Health) from CSU Northridge. He has published in national and regional scholarly journals on topics such as urban sociology, homophobia, academic status, sports, and public health. Dr. Wagner is a coauthor (with Earl Babbie and Jeanne Zaino) of the ninth edition of Adventures in Social Research (2015) and a coauthor (with Erin Ruel and Brian Gillespie) of The Practice of Survey Research: Theory and Application (2015).

Brian Joseph Gillespie, PhD, is assistant professor of sociology at Sonoma State University. He received his PhD at University of California, Irvine in 2012. His primary research interests are in demography, family, migration, and the life course. He is trained in quantitative and qualitative research methods and has published research in these areas using sophisticated statistical modeling, ethnographic research, in-depth interviews, and narrative analysis. Dr. Gillespie’s research has been supported by the American Sociological Association Section on Methodology, National Science Foundation, University of California Regents, and the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health.

From Library Journal Bryson, who hails from Iowa, has spent the last 20 years living in England and writing about the often nettlesome relationship between his two countries, especially regarding their shared language (Made in America, LJ 2/1/95). His latest work is "a kind of valedictory tour around the green and kindly island" before he moved with his family back to the United States. With Paul Theroux's Kingdom by the Sea in hand, Bryson braves the inhospitably soggy fall weather to trudge from Dover, London, coastal villages, Wales, Scotland, and back home to Yorkshire on a helter-skelter seven-week journey that only a reader well versed in the geography of the region will follow, since there are no maps to aid the (American) reader. In fact, Bryson is writing here more for his British fans, who no doubt roar with mirth as he gently pokes fun at their excessive forbearance and fondness for Cagney and Lacey repeats. He is hilarious when transcribing a conversation with unsuspecting locals, especially in Glaswegian pubs, but merely dumb when he indulges in a curious (is it British?) bathroom humor. People are looking at me funny in restaurants and on the train when I burst out laughing. But Bryson's books are SO GOOD. What's a person to do?If you read A Walk in the Woods and felt a deep yearning to walk the Appalachian trail, haul out your suitcase. This book will make you want to follow Bryson's footsteps again as he travels across England, Wales, and Scotland by foot, by bus, and by train. He spends a day or so in dozens of small towns and cities, disecting them for our education and amusement. He tours galleries, musuems, and historic homes; visits pubs and restaurants; and stays in an amazing variety of shoddy hotels. (There are fine hotels in England. They just cost more than he is willing to pay.)Even if you don't plan to go to England anytime soon (and why not? it's a lovely country full of friendly people we Americans and Canadians can mostly understand) this book is a reminder to those of us who are far too insular that the world out there is different and that difference is a good and quite frequently amusing thing.

An American Views Life in Britain By Bucherwurm Bill Bryson expertly captures the mental amusement and bemusement of an American living in Britain. I am an American who also lived in England, and I laughed myself silly reading this book. This isn't meant to be a travel guide or an in depth academic study of British culture as some reviewers must evidently believe. There are many ways to reminisce about life in a foreign country, and BB chose to tell us fond, funny stories of his life in the UK. Let's not be stuffily chauvinistic about these things. I'm sure many Brits could write equally hilarious tales of their lives over here in the USA. For me its hard to understand that any American who has lived in Britain would not find funny such tales as the train/bus schedule incident (As I remember it the Brit Rail agent couldn't understand Bryson's difficulty with a schedule that had a daily train arrive in a town minutes after the scheduled departure of the daily bus that took travellers to their next destination.)If y! ou are a Bryson fan, this is as good as he gets. You will especially enjoy it if you have spent time in both the US and the UK.

He's better with places than with people By Frank Cunat This is a great read, a fascinating book about the writer's journey through Great Britain, with the author's impressions cleverly expressed. He's like an earthier Paul Theroux, or like Peter Mayle as channeled by Dave Barry. Bryson is good at using both humor and hyperbole to illustrate good points about his British travels as well as disappointments. After reading the book, you feel you've had a conversation with an old friend who gave you the lowdown on his trip without any sugar-coating. You feel that everything Bryson says comes directly from the heart.The only reason I didn't rate the book 5 stars is that, a few times too often, Bryson goes into great detail about how rude he was toward service people who were just doing their jobs and whose performance wasn't precisely what he wanted. He reaches a low point when he takes almost a page to describe his reaction to a McDonald's employee who made the mistake of asking if he wanted "an apple turnover with that." Maybe it's because I've waited tables, but Bryson struck me as exactly the kind of arrogant, self-righteous, condescending customer you prayed you wouldn't have to serve. He comes close in these passages to personifying the ugly American: willing to enjoy England's riches, but not tolerant of its shortcomings.Nevertheless, that's no reason not to read the book. Bryson's insights into the places he visits are more than worth the price of admission.

By J.Prather Cornelia Funke has crafted a wonderful fairy tale full of imagination, far off lands and adventure. Emma makes an outstanding heroine who along with her valued dog Tristan decides to take off on a flying carpet to help a blue genie win back his powers. This is a short little story that will be a bit of a challenge to beginning chapter book readers. The colorful and whimsical illustrations will help ease the way, as the artist perfectly captures the dreaminess of the story in the beginning and then continues to channel just the right mood as Emma and Tristan enter the kingdom of the selfish, evil yellow genie.The marvelous writing points to an excellent translation and marks this as a good choice for a class or bedtime read aloud. The yellow genie is a compelling villain, and Emma exhibits a surprising amount of courage as she is forced to come face to face with deadly spiders and scorpions. Tristan is always there to provide an encouraging lick, and when the two finally win their wishes, the story ends with an unexpected and totally endearing twist. Emma and the Blue Genie is a must have for any young fan of fairy tales. Rich in imagination, yet still rooted in the finest of folk traditions, this is an excellent offering from a story telling master.

Emma and her dog help the genie to get his magic back in this cute adventure for kids.I really like this book for younger readers that are new to reading chapter stories. The book is just long enough to feel like a big book, about 90 pages. It has short chapters and lots of beautiful colored illustrations. The story is cute and should interest those in the lower grades of elementary school and even up through fifth grade depending on their interests. For those not ready for chapter books, it would be great to read aloud, a few chapters a night with the accompanying illustrations. The tale is fun and full of adventure. My kids and I really enjoyed it.

By Bluerose's Heart In Emma and the Blue Genie, Emma takes a walk one night when she can’t sleep. She finds a genie named Karim, but he’s much smaller than she imagined, and he has no magic. A powerful genie has stolen the source of his power…a nose ring. Emma and Karim set out on a mission to retrieve his nose ring.I’m always on the lookout for books with genies in them, because they’re not overly common. I was thrilled to get the chance to read this one, and hopeful that it could be one I could share with my oldest boys(5 and 3) soon. I’m even more thrilled that it passed the test, and will promptly go on our reading list.Emma and the Blue Genie has a fairy tale quality to it. It has beautiful FULL color illustrations liberally spread throughout the story. The ending makes me believe that this is the first book in the series, so I’m eagerly waiting to see if that’s true.It was purely a pleasure to read Emma and the Blue Genie!

You get wrapped up in Roach By George US I didn't know what to expect when I began reading Roach but I quickly fell right into the post apocalyptic setting and could not help but commiserate with Griffin Scoarse as I set out on my own dreadful daily commute to midtown Manhattan. Just as I was beginning to believe I had comprehended the dark days in which the main character was living, each additional chapter proved this novel to be teeming with suspense and tension. I could not put down the book had to make it through the end to find out what came of these deeply flawed yet gripping characters.

By Pima Gurevich I don't normally take the time out of my day to review anything but this book deserves recognition.I bought this book with no intention of reading it. I don't read and when I do its usually some kind of fantasy novel or somthing that has lots of pretty pictures definitely not a intense and brutally real love story set in a distopian future, this purchase was made with the sole purpose of supporting the author. Eventually my curiosity of the cover peaked and I started skimming through the pages, skimming quickly turned into intense reading. I have never had a book hold my attention as well as Roach, I couldn't put it down, the execution of the setting and the characters is simply genius and without trying to repeat myself Roach by Alisa Perederey will make you procrastinate any responsibilities you had until you finish the book.This is the first book in a while that I've read from start to finish in one sitting. If you like Romance, drama, drugs, sex, or a book about very broken people making very difficult decisions in a future that's very unforgiving then you will probably enjoy this read.

Terrorist attacks have taken their toll and Griffin is tiredly making his way in the new worn out city of New York. Trains still work, people still work, there is still work. But the best seems to go to the military to continue the fight for survival. All is bad news, people are paranoid and life goes on. Until…This made me think of what even the most insignificant being brings to the table, whether fumbling for answers, scrounging for friends or just getting out of bed – it has an effect on everyone. An odd little volume of what could happen and how we would adjust. I read it in one sitting.An advanced copy of this book was provided for an honest review.

Given that theaters charge over a million dollars and a first-born child for a small popcorn nowadays – 50% of people admit to smuggling food or drinks into the movies. Being a stripper in Canada is rough. A nude dancer licks a one-dollar coin, the "Looney," and stick it on her body then alcohol fueled patrons toss Looney coins attempting to knock off her coin. After the music stops, she uses a big magnet to pick up her tips. (Tips, I said, "tips.") There is a small cheetah type cat in the Amazon jungle called a margay. This kitty has the vocal ability to mimic monkey sounds. A curious monkey will draw near to see “who” is calling and dinner is served for the cat. There is nothing wrong with sitting down for a nice long read with a textbook. Well, except they're usually dry, dull and often go on interminably. Wouldn't you rather have your brain massaged and be tickled at the same time? Take two genetic scientists. Take the nuclear DNA out of a single cell. Have the two scientists each grab an end and stretch. How far apart will they be standing? Every cell in your body contains six feet of DNA. A human, walking casually at three mph, will cover about 264 feet in one minute. A cockroach moving hell-for-leather to retreat to the shadows will cover 295 feet in a minute. If you have been married more than 22-minutes you already know this one. Maybe it is the hubby’s obsession with building his baseball card collection or having spent triple digits on a new fishing pole? Is it the wife’s endless mission to own the world’s largest shoe collection? No matter because the result is the same and money is the greatest source of arguments in a marriage. Even if you’ve never read a trivia book before you will surely enjoy CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? – for the variety of interesting facts and humor it contains. You can look in Chapter 8 if you want to know what Astronaut Neil Armstrong had in his left pocket when he stepped on the surface of the moon. Can you imagine spending $9,000 to travel from coast-to-coast? Look in Chapter 4 if you want to know what you would be traveling in. "Yo Adrian" is forever associated with the movie "Rocky." Look in Chapter 7 and find out which famed movie producer wanted Sylvester Stallone for what blockbuster film. (This one is so far off base it's incredible.)

Topics about food, history, sports, Science, and a lot more. Also a lot of surprising facts about customs and traditions from different countries. I really liked this book. Stories are nice, short, straight to the point, presented in a humorous style. Highly recommended even to those who have little time to read. For those who want to be informed but like to be entertained, this book is a treat.

Sarna Memorial Award for Scholarship At once a study of biblical theology and modern Jewish thought, this volume describes a “participatory theory of revelation” as it addresses the ways biblical authors and contemporary theologians alike understand the process of revelation and hence the authority of the law. Benjamin Sommer maintains that the Pentateuch’s authors intend not only to convey God’s will but to express Israel’s interpretation of and response to that divine will. Thus Sommer’s close readings of biblical texts bolster liberal theologies of modern Judaism, especially those of Abraham Joshua Heschel and Franz Rosenzweig. This bold view of revelation puts a premium on human agency and attests to the grandeur of a God who accomplishes a providential task through the free will of the human subjects under divine authority. Yet, even though the Pentateuch’s authors hold diverse views of revelation, all of them regard the binding authority of the law as sacrosanct. Sommer’s book demonstrates why a law-observant religious Jew can be open to discoveries about the Bible that seem nontraditional or even antireligious.

About the Author Benjamin D. Sommer is professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Previously he was the director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies at Northwestern University. Their is detailed information about every GLOCK model, including the ones that aren't available in the U.S. and why. Sadly, the book went to print before the author could test the new G43, but their is a free PDF of an additional chapter covering the G43 available on the publisher's web site. The link is at the end of the book, and with the free PDF, this really is the complete guide to every GLOCK model ever produced. It even covers GLOCK's accessories (knives, entrenching tool, lights, holsters, etc.), maintenance, GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation (GSSF), armorer's course, and suppressors.If you want to know everything there is about your GLOCK, and the GLOCKs you don't have yet, this is the perfect guide for you.

Best Glock Reference By Educated Consumer This is the single best reference on the history and comparisons between different generations, models, calibers and variations of Glock pistols. The photographs of key parts are excellent as well. It is well written, clear and comprehensive. I thought I knew a lot about Glocks but that was before I read Robb's book. If you are going to buy only one book about Glocks, this is the one to buy.

The story is very well written with a strong plot and great mix of characters. The story has some mind-boggling twists which keep you going till the end. I basically read it all at once because I was so into it. The character Byron is very interesting.Overall, I highly recommend this book.
