Attractive cover. Activities are preceded by skills, time, level, materials required--all reader-friendly things. On the negative side: Although there is a table of contents, the book has NO PAGE NUMBERS! This is not reader-friendly at all! To go to the trouble of creating a nice-looking book with useful information, it would have made sense to fix these small--BUT VERY IMPORTANT--details. This book needs professional editing--not only for formatting but for concision.I am disappointed to find that more and more people with good information to share are putting out inferior products.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. No page numbers! By Elizabeth Sternberg I've only glanced through this book so far, which is actually quite difficult because there are NO PAGE NUMBERS printed on the pages. There are some excellent sections and ideas, but they are hard to find! It's rather frustrating. The table of contents is off too - if you have the patience to count the pages towards the spot you're looking for. Ooopsies?

10 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Save your money, these activities are available online for FREE!! By mixter Is this book really needed? Lots of good activities, some of them have been around since the ark, but that doesn't matter if they work. My main problem with this book is that all of the activities can be found for free on the web, why waste money buying this book which has several pages of filler at the start? I don't believe people should make money from sharing educational best practices, it might have been better for the writer to offer this as a free PDF on her website and accepted donations, instead of selling ideas that are available for free online.

For more than a decade, GPS for Land Surveyors has been unique among other books on this topic due to its clear, straightforward treatment of the subject matter. Completely revised and updated, this fourth edition of a perennial bestseller maintains the user-friendly format that made previous editions so popular while addressing changes in hardware, software, and procedures. Neither simplistic nor overly technical, this book introduces the concepts needed to understand and use GPS and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).

See What’s New in the Fourth Edition:

  • Up-to-date information on GNSS and GPS modernization
  • Changes in hardware, software, and procedures
  • Comprehensive treatment of novel signals on new blocks of satellites (L5 and L2C)
  • The book minimizes your reliance on mathematical explanations and maximizes use of illustrations and examples that allow you to visualize and grasp key concepts. The author explains the progression of ideas at the foundation of satellite positioning and delves into some of the particulars. He keeps presentation practical, providing a guide to techniques used in GPS, from their design through observation, processings, real-time kinematic (RTK), and real-time networks. These features and more make it easier for you to meet the challenge of keeping up in this field.

    Review

"… covers a full range of science and techniques used in the rapidly developing world of satellite positioning. The author has written eight chapters with accuracy, brevity, and clarity to ensure that the reader gains a comprehensive understanding of each topic. Many new learnings are included as well as a useful set of self-assessment exercises and explanations. For land surveyors, this essential reading is valuable as a foundation for the novice, continued professional learning for the experienced practitioner, and aide memoire for the expert. I recommend this book to my fellow surveyors, near and far."―Michael Barnes, Past Chair, Association of Petroleum Surveying & Geomatics (www.apsg.info), Chair 2010-2020, APSG Education Foundation"… Dr. Van Sickle offers a rare combination of an advanced education along with practical experience in the field as a professional land surveyor. … As GPS and other satellite positioning systems continue to evolve, I am happy to see Dr. Van Sickle release the Fourth edition of GPS for Land Surveyors. … as GNSS technology continues to move towards wider market adoption of real-time, high-accuracy positioning techniques such as WADGPS, RTK, real-time PPP, I'm happy to see Chapter 7 devoted to Real-Time Global Positioning System Surveying."―Eric Gakstatter, Geospatial Solutions

"I have recommended this text to many students, who were able to appreciate the clarity. Welcome then thank the author and the publisher for having proposed this update"―Gabriele Garnero, Università e Politecnico di Torino E-mail

The 4th Edition of GPS for Land Surveyors Is Detailed yet Understandable By Joseph Kerski Jan Van Sickle's GPS for Land Surveyors book provides an excellent resource for anyone teaching or learning about GPS, surveying, or related geotechnologies. It strikes a good balance between providing enough technical details about such complex topics as multipath errors, how to draw baselines, and how to calibrate a site, but yet the book at the same time is approachable and understandable. Jan provides much insight into biases and error in GPS signals and procedures, and how to manage error. Thorough treatment is given to receivers, methods, coordinate systems, datums, geoids and ellipsoids, real time kinematic GPS, differential GPS, and much more. The color illustrations are very thoughtfully done and enhance understanding. This is the 4th edition of the book, but the new edition is definitely worthwhile - it provides a great amount of additional and updated material, including GNSS initiatives around the world. Each chapter contains a set of quiz questions and answers, which aids the book's utility as an instructional tool in a university setting or for those working through the book independently. It is not a "given" to find someone so knowledgeable about this topic and yet be such a good instructor, but Jan Van Sickle is both, and both of these traits are quite evident in this book.

An Excellent book for GPS/GNSS Surveying By Matt Wellslager This book is a great resource for students wanting to become land surveyors and land surveyors that plan to use GNSS receivers in their workplace. I taught a class on GPS Surveying at a technical college using his 3rd edition and plan to use the 4th edition now. Updates to the 4th edition have been added to stay current with changes in technology. I believe the book provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The format of the book is well organized. The illustrations are excellent. I think this is book would make an excellent addition to anyone's library for surveying. I strongly recommend this book for all interested in a better understanding of GPS/GNSS technology.

As usual for Dr. Van Sickle, the book provides a great amount of precious information to the reader as well as insight into the future technology of the GPS/GNSS world. One of the most amazing things for this books is the language. The GPS/GNSS technology and science is not easy, but it is presented in a way that is easy to understand. The presence of high quality illustrations, mathematical equations, and questions to answer makes this book one of the most valuable GPS/GNSS textbooks for Surveying and GPS/GNSS classes at the universities. Based on my personal experience I would say that this book is equally valuable for laymen, professional land surveyors, and students.A.PanayotovAsst. Research ProfessorUCD, Denver, CO

For the past ten years, Quanta has been a prisoner and lab rat. She's a Red Helix with the very rare gift of clairvoyance. She can see the past and future after glimpsing the "timeghost" of a person, place, or thing. This makes her a very powerful asset to those who wish to take down the Shadow Ravens, as she spent ten years with them as well. Too bad that Quanta isn't going to give up information that easily, but once a new guy appears in the lab, her powers take an interesting (and deadly) turn.I really enjoyed Quanta, especially how the namesake's ability worked. She isn't all powerful or all knowing. Like I said, she needs something to prompt her visions. But even then, whether she sees forward or backward isn't always up to her. And while the past is set in stone, the future isn't, so she sees all kinds of possible futures--some more clear than others. Of course, meeting the mysterious new guy, Altair, changes her ability in a big way. I won't tell you what, but it's pretty intense and leads to a lot of action and danger! There isn't as much romance in Quanta as there was in Cipher, but I'm okay with that because there's more coming! Quanta and Altair had more to think about than kissing. Death is a very real possibility for both of them as he tries to break her out of her lab-prison. Even though Quanta can see the future, that doesn't really help them escape. It just shows them what's possible and what's not. It's like a map of sorts. Most of the book takes place on the same day, because of reasons!Quanta was really great. It kept me furiously flipping pages to see what would come next, and while it left me with a happy ending, there's obviously more to come. Not everything is resolved! There are bad people lurking around!*Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for review. No compensation was offered or accepted.

This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley, Inscribe Digital and by the authors. This book was one crazy ride. Altair Orpheus is the son of a prominent Senator who has high aspirations for his son. At a young age, though, Altair, or Tair, became disillusioned with his life. He lives in a society that your status is determined by the tattoo you wear. There is a secret rebel society of Shadow Ravens, only obvious to fellow Shadow Ravens by the raven tattoo on their wrist. Tair has been leading a double life, secretly a member of the Shadow Ravens but leading the life of a privileged Senator’s son in order to get and pass along important information.Quanta wears a Red Helix tattoo. All ‘Reds’ are considered dangerous, they have special powers difficult to control. They are usually just murdered. Quanta’s gift, though, is that she is a seer. She can either look back or to the future. She has been held for ten long years in the labs under the Senate building, studied, experimented on, and used for her sight. Most on the outside believed that she was dead. I want to take a moment here to pause and say how awesome and strong Quanta is. I believe she is about twenty by now. Did she ever break or give in to what she was subjected to? No! She remained strong and manipulated things to the best of her ability to keep those on the outside safe. This young woman amazed me to no end with her strength and resilience.“The Seligo had tried to strip her bare, but at her core, Quanta was still Quanta, and she hadn’t been broken by her past.”When Tair is asked by the head scientist, Dr. Nagi, to assist him with a top secret experiment, he thinks this is the perfect opportunity to finally get into the inner workings to get more information for the Ravens. But he had no idea that his life was about to change forever. As soon as he laid eyes on Quanta, he knew his life was no longer his own.Tair knew he had to try to get Quanta out, but with layers upon layers of security, and Quanta was observed every minute of every day through cameras and two way mirrors. How could they ever escape? As Tair and Quanta spend time together, they realize their bond is not a normal one. All Quanta has to do is touch Tair and she feels calmer. The images constantly playing through her head quiet. Along with this bond come abilities Quanta didn’t realize she possessed. Abilities that might be helpful in their escape. This book was a crazy ride and kept me on edge right up to the very end. There isn’t really a cliff hanger but there is still much to be resolved. We also get to know Tair’s sister, Cassie, and I loved her. I’m hoping in the next book we get to find out more about her. There is quite a wait for the next book in this series, Quanta Reset, which will be a continuation of Tair and Quanta’s story. I think you could enjoy this book even if you haven’t read the first one, but the characters of the first book do re-appear in this one. The first book in the series, though, Cipher, is also amazing so you really don’t want to miss it. So start at the beginning, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Awesome powers and world, but lackluster plot By Molly Mortensen @ Woven Magic Books Age Rating: Swearing, implication of rape and torture. (We know it happened even though it happens off screen.)The Good:I liked how Quanta saw the future and the past. I've never read anything like it! She sees time ghosts, people in the space she's in or connected to an object or person. Sometimes it was jarring having her visions in present tense and the rest in past, but that might have been the point. A lot of thought went into her powers. We get to see how the elite live through Altair. They were as vain as expected. But some of their kids aren't as stuck up. Altair's crazy gamer sister was a great character! Not that the other characters weren't good, but there wasn't much opportunity for levity. The Bad:Like Cypher, the main characters in Quanta were 'magically' linked. Paired. Destined. Whatever. She requires him to have control of her powers. I didn't like it in the first book and I don't like it here. This one is a little better, but I still wish it was just a coincidence that he has this effect on her, or their feelings allowed this connection. And I don't like that Lady Eva scientifically paired them together. Talk about controlling. Plus it spoils the romance!Although stuff happens, the plot was rather slow for me. They spend the whole book not escaping from the lab. I also didn't like the way Quanta's powers grew. (Plot wise I mean.) It's been done before and this book had the potential for more. (Sorry spoiler avoiding)Even though this is the second book, it features a new story and all new characters. Does it stand alone? Mostly. Quanta didn't do as good a job explaining the world and since I remembered little from Cypher, I was rather confused by all of the terms. The Stuff I forgot:In a world where people have scientifically altered DNA the color or your Helix tattoo reveals what you can do. White Helix, also known as the Seligo are the elite. They don’t get sick and they don’t age. Black Helix are warriors with superior strength and stamina, greens have super smarts, blues are mysterious, but have some sort of mind control abilities. Then there’s the red helix, which are said to have unstable DNA. They have out of control powers and are to be captured or killed on sight. The Shadow Ravens are working against the government to free the red helix and protect them.Point of View: First (Quanta & Altair)Predictability: 4 out of 5 (Where 1 is totally unpredictable and 5 is I knew what was going to happen way ahead of time.)Source: Netgalley

He's does an excellent job covering Disneyland for the LA Times, and few people know more about the park than he does. He draws on this knowledge for this fun tale.

By Amazon Customer This book was such a remarkable turd it is absurd, I mean just look at the cover. YOU NEVER have a cover with words of different fonts. I absolutely hated the part where Darth Vader and Princess Leia had an incredibly graphic sexual encounter on the Pirates of the carribean ride, I won't got into details but putting a light-saber where it doesn't belong was not what I thought the "back-stage" in the title of this book referred to. I couldn't believe the audacity of having Mickey Mouse the head of a death camp beneath the Calfornia Screamin' ride. Although I respect MacDonald's want to take risks, I absolutely thought the decapitation sequence of Cinderella was similarly too graphic. 6-paragraphs about spinal fluid? REALLY MACDONALD?? I loved the ending where everyone was killed by a presidential nuclear strike, very politically topical. 2 out of 5 stars.

By John Frost Who hasn't visited Disneyland and wondered what goes on behind the scenes of the happiest place on Earth? It can't all be rainbows and churros, right?Brady MacDonald imagines a world where Disneyland's backstage is populated by brand's most famous characters, who, it turns out, are very real indeed. The story is set against the Disneyland Resort's very modern predicament of what to do with the Star Wars and Marvel brands. As the characters plot to have their voices heard by their corporate masters, I found myself drawn into the imagined conflict and taking sides.Without getting into too much detail, I enjoyed the elements of satire and parody and thought MacDonald did a fine job with the action scenes. Disney fans will have fun imagining the backstage lives of characters they think they know.

The mystery of Almighty God is most properly an explication of the oneness of God, tying the faith of the church to the bedrock of Israel's confession of the LORD of the covenant, the LORD of our Lord Jesus Christ. The doctrine of divine attributes, then, is set out as a reflection on Holy Scripture: the One God as omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient, and all these as expressions of the Love who is God. Systematic theology must make bold claims about its knowledge and service of this One LORD: the Invisible God must be seen and known in the visible. In this way, God and God's relation to creation are distinguished—but not separated—from Christology, the doctrine of perfections from redemption. The LORD God will be seen as compatible with creatures, and the divine perfections express formally distinct and unique relations to the world.

This systematic theology, then, begins from the treatise De Deo Uno and develops the dogma of the Trinity as an expression of divine unicity, on which will depend creation, Christology, and ecclesiology. In the end, the transcendent beauty who is God can be known only in worship and praise.

30 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Excellent but Different! By Richard C. Woodhouse This new Systematic Theology, is fresh and different from standard books of this type. Professor Sonderegger makes so many good arguments and yet the book reads like it was written by someone who really believes and Loves God. She makes an important point that "What" God is is just as important as "Who" God is. She is not allergic to classical Theism's metaphysical arguments, as so many Theologians are and have been the past 100 years. With that said, she is also who sees the importance of Barth's contribution to Theology. Her emphasis on the Oneness of God is a needed corrective to the hegemony of Trinitarian Theology. She has many great insights and different takes on the traditional attributes of God. The book is very deep yet very readable. I will be referring to it a lot and I look forward to future volumes. Her take on the book of Numbers, and its Theological implications is so different and interesting. I loved it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Lively And Intersting By Brett H This is billed as 'the essential guide for students and playgoers around the world" and I think that is a very fair evaluation of this work. Whilst it is generally easy to get the gist of any soliloquy, it is good to be able to refer to this book when reading - in particular - unfamiliar words or words which have somewhat changed their meaning since the time of Shakespeare. It even has an easy to use guide to help you use the dictionary to its optimum. There are also explanations and drawings showing such things as animals and birds common in Shakespeare's time, daggers and armour and the interpretations of some of the colours mentioned in the texts. The dictionary is beautifully illustrated .It has a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre (for those not lucky enough to have attended the rebuilt one) and a clear explanation of Shakespeare's company - the Chamberlain's Men - and their sponsors. There is also a great map of what Shakerpeare's Europe and the Mediterranean complete with its then names. It also educates the reader in a historical sense about the sorts of occupations, recreational activities, music and clothing worn. It is also very clear on the accepted view of the Universe (Cosmos) of the day which is so different from our own and which features in many of the plays. The Elizabethan era was a great period for English shipping. It's the time when the world was circumnavigated and English pirates were the scourge of the seas and England took on the might of the Spanish Armada. Ships were important then and the dictionary illustrates and explains the popular ships of the time.I cannot speak too highly of this dictionary. It is invaluable in helping the reader to a better understanding of Shakespeare's plays. It is lively and interesting and never dry or dull. Useful to always have to hand whether you're a student or just a lover of performances.

Walker This is a nice dictionary---not as detailed as some of the others the Crystals have published but appealing with color, pictures, and sidebar info panels. If you're looking for an easy-to-read dictionary to help you with Shakespeare's work, take a peek at this one!

This book is about Chris a unique man with a one of a kind gift to exorcise demons, in this universe demons can inhabit people and push out their souls. Chris eventually comes into contact with other supernatural species "angels, weres, vampires, demons, native spirits and a whole host of others" and meets his soul mate as well as grows in power and perspective. If you are wondering about the title and like me am not a fan of christian fiction I will say this book does have the Christian mythos with angels and demons but also includes all the other religions as well in a non monotheistic way. Basically you will not feel this is a preachy book as that makes up only one dimension of the story and is not the whole story one of my favorite characters is the bear who is a native spirit.Good1: The writing is mature with few errors I found that it flowed well and that the word usage was both easy to follow and engaging.2: The dialogue felt organic and real I could see people saying those things in real life and it made for good character development.3: The characters themselves are well developed and 3 dimensional they all have separate wants and needs they all have their own take on the world and whats in it. I felt the personality of the characters and that added a lot to the story as you feel them as people.4: The world was well detailed and was fleshed out as the story progressed. This means no big info dumps instead you are introduced to the world in a natural organic way this helps you make sense of it as the character does and again makes the immersion into the world effortless.5: One of the big strong points of not only this book but its sequels "reviews of those to come" is its lack of genre hooks. This means no love triangles, kidnaps, dark and brooding vampire lovers, know it all sage advisers and amoral villains. The books thank all that is holy relies on original ideas at least as original as you can get in a genre like this.6: The story flows by itself with a lack of the plot characters you know the type they had to do x for y to happen. Those idiotic moments where the main character has to be stupid for the plot to continue I hate those.Bad1: The world is our world but I would of liked a little more description in the scenes but this is a minor quibble just something to put down so that you don't think this is an unbiased reviewOverview This is an awesome book that is very enjoyable it has engaging characters a world that is unique and interesting. I felt it was a breath of fresh air into the genre without losing the things I love about the genre.I would strongly recommend this book if you like the genre as I believe you will enjoy this book very much. Bottom line at the price I don't see how you could not give this a chance, you will not be disappointed.

It's tough for a dude to find some decent urban fantasy novels these days that aren't full of sickly sweet girlishness. Nothing wrong with that if you're a 15 year old girl, but for a grown guy who likes books that kick @**, there's not much to be had...That's why I'm glad I happened across this series. While the books suffer from the usual indie drawbacks (poor formatting and the occasional typo) it's worth overlooking for getting to a darn good read. The first book (this one) takes a while to get revved up, but the second one grabs you by the throat and stays at full-throttle the whole time.If you like urban fantasy that is all about action and not so much about two star-crossed-something-or-others making gooey eyes at each other, you'll like this book and the rest in the series.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Hook, writing, story, pacing. Perfect mix By Amazon Customer I seldom create reviews so bear with me. I have read all 4 currently released novels in this series.I give this freshman work 5 stars. It is well worth a read by anyone interested in a good tale. Especially, but not limited to, the urban fantasy genre.Pros:* The pacing is very good for this novel. There is a ton of world building that has to happen to introduce you to the protagonists life. Details are doled out at a rapid clip and push the story at a fast clip.* Hook - Very quickly you will care about the protagonist. The story definitely pulls you into his world and has you rooting for him.* Writing - I enjoyed the writing style. A little humor, and a lot of details. Delves into the "science" of the genre in an interesting and easy to understand fashion without killing the pacing.* Story - Details come out fairly regularly and move the story along. The story itself gets pushed to the back a little in this debut novel as we get to know the characters. Still present and makes sense.* Price - This story is priced at a debut Author price.Cons:* Minor editing flaws - There are a couple of misspelled words that should have been caught in editing. "The" instead of "Them". Very minor, easy to catch the meaning and don't detract from the story. Is it possible these are kindle only issues?* Some ideas could have been fleshed out a little more. You won't believe how quickly the novel flies by.Basically its a very good book. Hard to put down and leaves you wanting more. Luckily there are 3 other novels in the series already released, so you can get your Demon Accord fix.Side notes:If you enjoy authors like Jim Butcher or Patricia Briggs, consider this series required reading. (Not because it adds to those Authors series in any way, instead it is because you will thank me later).

Sole survivor of a brutal massacre, Sasha struggles to come to terms with his need to avenge his clan and with a magical sword that has bonded to him for life. When Jace, a mercenary soldier, helps save Sasha from certain death, he finds himself drawn to Sasha. Can Jace walk the fine line between duty and desire? Or will Sasha’s plans for vengeance lead him to his death? Sasha is a healer forced to take on the role of a warrior when his clan is attacked. Trapped in his caravan, the only weapon he can lay hands on is Ryka, the legendary sword that has been in his family for generations. To Sasha’s horror, the blade takes control of his body and turns him into a ruthless killer. Worse, Ryka sets in motion an irreversible process that will bind them together for life — if Sasha can survive the bonding. Jace is a mercenary soldier, charged with protecting his commander’s brother, Eredwyn, on a journey through the Middle Kingdoms. When Eredwyn’s sometimes-prophetic visions lead them to the dying Sasha, Eredwyn insists that they must save him. As Sasha struggles to come to terms with Ryka and his need to avenge his clan, Jace finds himself torn between his orders to protect Eredwyn and his growing feelings for Sasha. Can Jace walk the fine line between duty and desire, or will Sasha’s plans for vengeance lead all three men to their deaths? Leythe Blade is a stand-alone novel of ~77,000 words.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Richly nuanced world, intriguing characters By BJ If you’ve read other books by this author, you will know already how intricate and richly nuanced her world-building is… I’m continually fascinated by how she ties so much together not only over the different planets in this universe but over thousands of years of time as well. Epic is the word that comes to mind. This standalone story is set in the same universe as the author’s other series, Guardians of the Leythe, The Wytch Kings of Skanda, and Guardians of the Pattern. It takes place on the earth-like world of Aion during the time period after the first two series but before the last.Leythe and Mythe are used interchangeably depending on time period and culture. Both refer to the energy field that permeates the universe and from which power can be drawn by those with the ability to touch it (referred to as mythe weavers, leythari, or psions relatively). Both Jace and Sasha can call upon this power field but in very different ways. Sasha can use its power to heal, but after an absolutely awful event leaves him no choice, he forms a bond with a blade, Ryka, with whom he can communicate through the leythe. Since healers are protected like the women of the clan, Sasha has never been allowed to use a weapon. His gift, his very nature, is to heal those in pain not cause it, to preserve life, not take it. He’s appalled at the realization that, using Ryka, he caused injury to others. Sasha struggles valiantly against the bond, against allowing something into his mind that threatens to change his very nature. At the beginning of the book, Jace’s duty and main focus is protecting his charge, Eredwyn, but as he helps his mentor save Sasha, he finds himself drawn to and feeling a kinship to Sasha. Because Jace has also struggled with accepting his own ability to use the mythe after having inadvertently used it to kill, something that he had no idea he could do. As both men struggle with guilt and accepting/controlling a power within that can do harm to others, the bond between them grows. Together they help each other heal and learn to forgive and accept themselves. But there isn’t just the one relationship in this book. For Sasha, once bonded to Ryka, must come to terms with that relationship as well. I thoroughly enjoyed how the relationship between Sasha and Ryka developed and grew from utter resistance to reluctant acceptance and finally trust. Ryka, though a sword, is very much a fascinating character on her own. There was another leythe blade, Blackfang, in an earlier book Human Frailties, Human Strengths. The concept intrigues me and while I admit to harboring resentment to Blackfang for an incident in which I wanted to kick him, I want to know more. The leythe blades are fascinating, and I’d very much enjoy a story in which we get to explore exactly how they all came into existence. The cover is a graphic design by Chinchbug that captures this story wonderfully. It took me a while to look beyond the long-haired, violet-eyed hotness holding the sword, but once I noticed the androgynous face in of the blade and the fractals in the background representing the leythe… wow. Yep, it’s perfect.

    CHAPTER ONE

    START THE ADVENTURE!

BABY SIGN LANGUAGE HAS BEEN featured everywhere from the news to the movies. But if you're picking up this book, it's likely you want to know more about it than these sound bites and clips offer. You may be wondering whether there is an official "language" called baby sign language and what exactly it means and when to use it. Or you may want to be able to communicate with your baby better but worry that if you sign with your child, she might not talk.

This chapter takes a look at what baby sign language is, its origin, why it works, and what myths might be out there about it. It explains what it can do for you and for your baby, as well as what it won't do.

    WHAT IS BABY SIGN LANGUAGE?

We all use language to understand what is said to us (receptive language) and to express ourselves (expressive language). Language is how we communicate with others using words, signs, or writing. Language includes the types of words we use (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs), how many words we use, how we put the words together to form thoughts, and so on. Speech is how we pronounce words and show the language we have acquired.

Believe it or not, before babies can speak, they have a language of their own, communicating with others by using grunts, visual cues, and gestures. Babies naturally point at things they want, wave with their hands to say goodbye, and clap to show excitement. These are all signs. Baby sign language taps into these natural tendencies to gesture with their hands to communicate their needs, wants, and even complex thoughts. You just teach them simple signs for things they want, and they use those to explain to you what they need. It takes a little patience and dedication on Mom and Dad's part, but any baby can do it. And the best part is that it fits right into your daily routine. Just add signs to the conversations and communications you already have with your baby.

Think about how empowering this can be for your baby. Instead of crying and hoping you can guess that she needs her diaper changed or wants to have some applesauce, she can tell you. You don't have to be standing in the grocery store line with a screaming baby wondering whether she is hungry or tired or bored. She can let you know. Baby sign language has the power to stop tantrums and start conversations and create a closer bond with your child.

BENEFITS OF SIGNING WITH YOUR HEARING BABY

Hearing babies who sign with their parents and other caregivers have a unique opportunity to learn to communicate their needs and wants and thoughts long before the average hearing child can. Signing has short-term benefits-reduced frustration and the ability to communicate-that are really important. But it also has long-term benefits-increased vocabulary, IQ, and interest in reading-that will help your child as he grows and matures. What you are doing now will help lay an important foundation for your child's educational mind-set. Signing will help him enjoy learning and develop the necessary skills to learn well.

In addition to the benefits for your child, signing with your baby will help you have a more enjoyable relationship with your child. You will be less stressed out and will be able to understand his specific needs instead of guessing what that cry at 3:00 a.m. means. As your baby grows, you will have less of the "terrible twos" to deal with than other parents. This is because most of these tantrums come from your baby's inability to specifically tell you what he needs. Without this skill, he is left with what he knows-crying. And fewer tantrums are never a bad thing.

A final thing to consider is that even if you are already in tune with your baby, using baby sign language allows your baby to communicate his needs to others who don't have your sixth sense for his needs but who have learned a few basic signs. That is very important for making your baby independent.

When Alice Cooper's head starts telling you what to do, you probably shouldn't listen. Chaino Durante did. And this is his story.

Chaino Durante works at the worst fast food restaurant ever. He has the worst job in this fast food restaurant. And the worst life he possibly can. When he discovers a mysterious bag in the fryer, he takes it home. The bag contains the head of rock and roll icon Alice Cooper. This is unfortunate. What's more unfortunate is that Chaino gets the gun he's going to use to rob his workplace stuck in the head and the head stuck on his hand. A new weapon is formed. A weapon that lets Chaino rob his workplace and subvert the order of the world around him. A weapon that blasts holes in reality itself, which does not come without consequence. A no holds barred psychedelic cartoon in the tradition of Bill Plympton and Ralph Bakshi, with Pink Floyd's The Wall thrown in for good measure, Rock'n'Roll Headcase explores the ins and outs of expanding consciousness with a madness that never lets up.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's Like an Adult Swim Epic Cartoon You Just Can't Unread! By Amazon Customer ROCK N ROLL HEAD CASE is an action-packed, fun-filled story the whole family can enjoy!Haha! No. It’s not. But it IS a damned good Bizarro novella with a ton of hidden wonder, not too surprising considering the author is none other than Lee “The Neverendingwonder” Widener. Think of the Adult Swim cartoon, The Regular Show, but under a Takashe Miike, Ichi The Killer-style production. The story is classic Bizarro, plenty of dreamscape style weirdness with a touch of the old ultra-violence and gore, yet remarkable sophistication that can only come from life experience. The best example of that last is in the title and theme: Alice Cooper’s head. Most readers are too young to remember, but this was the Godfather of Shock Rock’s signature card. He carried a severed head around and tongue kissed the thing as part of his live performance. Hats off to Mr. Widener! Well played!Throughout the first third, there are plenty of hidden cameos of Alice Cooper lyrics, and part of the fun was spotting them. But as the initial brouhaha becomes more and more twisted, ROCK N ROLL HEAD CASE turns into a whip-snap rollercoaster ride stretching to epic proportions, with flying pirate ships and giants. The scariest, however, is Mr. Widener’s ability to home in on the signs of the times and incorporate them into his stories. In this case, it’s the political state of affairs of the U.S… yet he wrote this a year before Donald Trump became a political icon.Overall, the story is fantastic and the writing holds the direct and deliberate voice I’ve come to look forward to with Mr. Widener’s work. A few copy edit errors aside, this is a perfect example of classic Bizarro and well worth the read for us lost grownups who prefer to read our Saturday morning cartoons with gratuitous violence and necrophilia. Excellent choice!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Alice Cooper's head leads an impressionable millennial on a violent Bizarro heavy metal spree through post-apocalyptic America. By nanotear Rock'n'Roll Head Case is a foot-stomping Bizarro romp through the looney tunes mind of Oregonian author Lee Widener. Drawing from crime fiction, '60s comics, violent cartoons, and proto-metal culture, this is a short and manic trip. Protagonist Chaino Durante hates his fast food job. He ends up going postal, thanks to the gun grafted into his hand that fires from the mouth of Alice Cooper's head. Alice is a BAD influence on Durante, and the two head out on a spree that recalls James and the Giant Peach--if it was directed by Quentin Tarantino while on an ether binge. There are countless easter eggs that wink at classic Cooper songs and other classic rock nuggets, and the climax falls somewhere between Idiocracy, Rocky Horror, and Pacific Rim. You might not learn anything from reading this book, but you will smile, bang your head, and if all goes well, you might just walk off a cliff and land in a cool drink of water. If Zappa was alive, this book would be sitting on the back of his toilet. The perfect gift for all the dead babies in your life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. From "The Horror Fiction Review" By Christine You know those stories when they try to come up with the most outlandish, most outrageous, most improbably ridiculous situations, and then reality seems to decide to take it as a challenge? When South Park, The Simpsons, or Back to the Future are trying to do a satirical, parodic spoof? Except then, suddenly, it’s all too plausible?Admittedly, in Rock and Roll Head Case, the majority of what goes on – getting a weaponized disembodied Alice Cooper head stuck to the end of your arm, for instance … or meeting the little old woman who lives in a shoe but her kids are creepy carnivorous baby dolls … flying chairs, tea(bleep)ing giants, talking bananas – are, hopefully, a ways further beyond the realms of coming true.Still, the popular new political candidate Franken-ssembled out of various celebrity and insect/animal body parts, including Trump’s hair and JFK’s brain? That’s enough to give any sensible person the willies. Worse, compared to what we ARE looking at, Trump’s hair with JFK’s brain might be an improvement. Thankfully, the monstrosity rejected Palin’s brain …Anyway! So here’s a guy named Chaino Durante, who only meant to start off his day quitting and robbing the Nuclear Burger where he works. An odd find in the toxic fryer vat leads to him getting the aforementioned Alice Cooper head stuck on his arm, and his simple robbery attempt turns out to be only the start of a crazy crime spree / journey / adventure. When I was a kid and came down with a fever, I’d have these recurring weird dreams, body horror and transformations and inanimate objects turned horribly animate. Reading this book was kind of like that. It all makes a certain sense at the time, and only afterward, usually when trying to explain it to someone else, you’re all, “okay, I know how it sounds, just bear with me, huh?”By the time you get to the pirate ship and Wil Wheaton’s big toe …See what I mean? Try to explain it, try to sound normal, and you come off like a spokesperson for wraparound jackets with buckles up the back. It’s a fitting addition to the New Bizarro Author bibliography, a good example of a genre that really has to be experienced to be believed, and a non-pharmaceutical way to make your brain feel like a pretzel.
