Not for exerc. beginners By BronxLens First, per the books own statement (p.4), "tabata style training is an advanced method of working out." so if you are a beginner, please consider starting with anther exercuse program/book.Now, if you are experienced with how exercises are done, such as Bear Crawls, Burpees, etc., then the book may be a good reference. But if you are new to them, this book is not such a good choice.The lack of photos or illustrations showing how to do the exercises properly is a major miss of this book. The book emphasizes (p.4) that "The importance of form is paramount-not just in terms of safety, but in terms of your fitness results." Without the aforementioned photos/illustrations, more than half the book's efficacy is lost.Note that while the book is 220 pages, pages 184 to 215 are repeated blank forms of the one seen at the top of page 183 (see photo).

Fantastic book to guide you through quick, intense workouts that you can do anywhere By Leahwawro I love this book!My biggest challenge with exercise is finding the time to do it, but this book has gotten rid of even that excuse. The workouts are quick and intense, and leave me feeling like I've had a great workout without being completely drained. I've found that they're a great way to start the morning without having to wake up too much earlier than I'd like.The book gives you a huge range of options of types of exercises--you could go a very long time without doing the same workout twice. I also like that there are plenty of exercises that don't require kettlebells or other tools-- you can use the book to guide your workout in a fully kitted-out gym, but it works equally well in a hotel room when you're on the road.I find the written descriptions very clear and precise--and I actually prefer reading a description of the activity to trying to follow along with videos, which I've done in the past and find distracting.Can't recommend it enough!

By charlotte I love HIIT workouts but always struggle when I get to the gym because I waste time trying to come up with a routine. This book is so handy and has a great combo of strength and cardio HIIT exercises. Perfect for someone trying to get to the next level in their fitness routine.

A ghost hunter and her team are approached by a man when he needs her help at the Winchester House, renowned for the number of ghosts it has and the purposely difficult layout that requires a guide to get through it. Garrie needs some excitement and decides the team is going. Little does she know that this sexy guy with the scary vibes is a bounty hunter from another world and what she’s needed for is, in essence, to save her own world.The story is told from three points of view. The main one is Garrie, or Lisa McGarrity, who as we are reminded of often, is a small person with a whole lot of power. Exactly what Garrie does with ghosts isn’t quite clear. We do see two or three captured, but what happens to them from there? Other than that, we see her talking to, attempting to negotiate with them or use her power to push them back when they become unruly.Trevaar is the off-world bounty hunter who in order to keep Garrie safe from the notice of a council on his world who would be very interested in her abilities, is keeping a whole lot of secrets from her. The only thing we know about his past is told from the point of view of Nevahn, his grandfather who raised him once his daughter died. This is done via scattered chapters and you don’t realize if it’s the past or present until quite a ways into each of those chapters.The third voice is the most entertaining, although Sklayne, another off-world entity who often takes form as a cat, is somewhat difficult to follow at first. The fact that he’s not from around here and doesn’t think like a human is showcased by very different thought and speech patterns. But you soon get used to it.I like the idea of the storyline and the different threats that were faced, but there were just too many places where I didn’t know what was going on. Some of it is explained later. Some of those flow okay from there but others are rather jarring, especially when the scene changes between one paragraph and the next. And for much of it I was never really clear on what Garrie was doing when using her abilities.It took effort to keep reading and it did get somewhat easier about a quarter of the way in. It especially got more interesting in the last quarter. There is a love interest that is just beginning to take hold and I liked how that was being handled. But it never really sucked me in and it was too easy to set aside a number of times.A copy was provided by the publisher to read in exchange for a review via LibraryThing.

A young girl comes into a village of sorts on another planet. The group claims she is trouble, yet she is the daughter of one of them, her deceased mother. Then you have a ghost hunting team in the Winchester Mystery House. This was equally fascinating, but what does the one have to do with the other? Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the book. Fortunately for me, I stayed with the book. After all, it was good, funny in parts, scary in others. And it seems to have something for everyone.If you like science fiction/fantasy, then you should have no trouble with liking this good book! What I love most about this book IS the Winchester House, the psychic ghost hunters, and the ghosts......I would dare to call some poltergeists. Some even crap ghost poo on the hunters! You have to love the humor in that!You have Lisa McGarrity (the lead protagonist and psychic who heads the ghost hunting team). She seems to be falling for the guy who requests help at the Winchester House. This gentleman is keeping secrets from Garrie...and doesn't let on that he is a bounty hunter from that other planet (see above). He needs her help to help him save her own planet. He tells her things on a need to know basis.It is kind of hard keeping track of who is narrating, as there are three. The different narrations are peppered in between each other. Once you get into the book, it all unfolds nicely. This is going to be a series, so you could say that Ms. Durgin is setting it up for future books while slowly introducing you to very fascinating and interesting characters. I think I love Sklayne, also from another place and is in the form of a cat. He talks different from humans.This book seems to have the whole package. It is clearly refreshing, keeps you involved, and there will be plenty more coming for us to enjoy. This is an honest review given for receipt of the free copy.*****Some spoilers******I feel like I have been blessed by a lucky streak with books lately. They have been good, and this was no exception. I was unfamiliar with the author, but I know about Book View Cafe, and have read other books by some of their authors, so when I picked this one (hoping to win) I did have high hopes. I wasn’t disappointed.There are so many books about ghosts and ghost hunters out there, and this one is delightfully different. Garrie is a Reckoner, trained by a ghost named Rhonda Rose. She heads a team with specific talents; Drew, with an innate ethereal knowledge of the history of a building–not just an innate knowledge, but the love of it like a child with legos; Lucie, an empath who is a barometer of ghostie emotional distress and needs, and Quinn, the research guy. Trevarr is the mysterious man who is their employer on this job, at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. He has a guest with him, Sklayne, who is a really cool not-cat.Durgin combines traditional elements of ethereal spirtual powers with wonderful home-made ghost traps, alien powers/magic and other creatures–others worlds–and she makes it all work, and adds in a really nice romance that is believable and heart wrenching at times, but doesn’t overpower the story. The alternating views between Trevarr and Garrie allow Trevarr’s story to unfold and give more understanding as to what is behind his character and makes him tick.I really liked her writing style. Some people may find it choppy, but I found that it fit with the characters and with the story, especially the way Garrie reacts/interacts with the world. I also liked it because it was different and interesting. I enjoyed the way Sklayne talked and thought, his world of sensation and being. He may have been one of my favorite parts of the book, because he made me smile with his view of things. And how very cat-like he was in his not-catness.Not having read the not-author’s cut, I can’t imagine how it must have been before, because I found this length to be just right. It’s not a cliffhanger ending, but I’m glad there are more books, because I like these characters and want to go on more adventures with them. I am so glad that there are places where an author can write the book the author wants to write; not out of vanity, but out of a sense that the story just doesn’t feel right the way it was. Being told by someone else that you need to do this or that stifles one’s creativity; yes, editors are necessary (fully and very much so) but sometimes the way a story is molded by other’s impressions begs the question of what is the author’s and what is the story the publisher thinks will sell. I am happy I read this version. The author’s dream and vision of the story is where the magic is, and I didn’t find it too long, or confusing, or any of the things I might have found if I thought the author was merely “padding” the book or adding unnecessary things in . Everything fit, and I thought everything was essential. I don’t know why I feel I need to add this. I suppose because we live in a society inundated with “Director’s Cuts” of movies and such, and sometimes they do seem unnecessary. Not so here.I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes paranormal, urban fantasy, strong female characters, angsty heroes (who have good cause to be), really interesting secondary characters, bugs, goo…

Weeks "The Road Sharks" is a fascinating look in the early period of time after Ghost Wind was banished from Clan of the Hawk. For those of you who follow Wandering Ones online comic series, this will make sense. For those of you who don't, it's not necessary to enjoy this book, but you are missing out on a fantastic story.Back to the review. This book is one of most entertaining fiction stories I have read in years. It follows Ghost Wind, a Scout who comes across a prisoner, and the story that follows over the next month or so of story time as they battle the Road Sharks, a sadistic motor cycle gang and their warlord Shell.The narrative in the story is succinct, clean, descriptive, and most importantly fun to read. Clint has an amazing talent for telling stories. He also blends the teachings of the Tracker School, and his own knowledge of martial arts, seamlessly into a well thought out story. The characters are multifaceted and plenty of room is left to for the characters grow in future volumes. The setting is the Pacific Northwest, an area that the author has a personal relationship with, as his other writings will attest.One of the highlights mentioned above are the scout skills mentioned/taught throughout the book in a very coyote fashion. As a fellow student of the Tracker School, although I have never met Clint, seeing these skills brought to life in prose is truly eye opening. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a fun page-turner adventure story By Brian As you might have guessed from the 5-star rating, I quite liked this book.In brief, it is a fun page-turner adventure story that slyly entices the reader into its universe and is hard to put down until the end has been reached. The characterizations are good, the dialog moves the plot along without excessive exposition, the plotting is tight, and the writing is clean. As a bonus, you learn a bit of wilderness-craft along the way.Fans of the author's "Wandering Ones" web comic will be familiar with the book's setting, but readers unfamiliar with the web comic won't have any problems figuring out what is going on. The postulated setting is large and rich with possibilities to be explored, and the author leaves enough loose ends dangling to make the reader look forward to subsequent adventures.The book is basically a well-told adventure story, and that alone makes it rate 4 stars. What gives it the extra star, and makes it stand out from other well-told stories, is that after I finished the book my mind kept going back to ponder some of the ideas raised in the book. Any book that can do that for me gets an extra star, regardless of the genre or whether or not I agree with the author's point of view. Good start to a new series By Amazon Customer I'm thinking maybe writing a web-comic is good training to be a novelist, because this is the second webcomic artist I've followed who has gone the novelist route and is now writing very good long-form stories. (The other is K.B. Spangler.)The Road Sharks is a post-apocalyptic story set in the universe of Hollingsworth's long-running webcomic. Ghost Wind is a warrior scout from an anti-technology tribe, but she's just been exiled for a particularly grievous error. Licking her wounds in the wilderness, she happens upon a man being tortured to death. The decision to save him leads her to adventure, redemption, and a new home.Short and fast-paced, the world-building is very solid, as it would have to be after 15 years building this world in the webcomic. The pacing and feel of it makes it appropriate for both adult and young adult, but there is a fair bit of non-explicit violence.***I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review***

Matlack In my entire life I had never participated in a Bible study group that centered entirely on women, so I was naturally intrigued to see what this book was about.I found the format to be basic and easy to follow, tho I did not have access to the accompanying videos that Ms. LaGrone has made to go along with each section which covers a five week period and the questions fairly rudimentary and maybe that was why I was not completely comfortable with it. As I said I have never been in a Bible Study course designed just for women and I found it to be unnecessary and by catering to women I felt there was a certain coyness, rather an attempt to seduce women into consecrating themselves to God by feel royal and special which felt a bit underestimating to the personal challenges and the actual discipline of commiting yourself to God. I felt more like I was sitting in on a Junior League meeting.This did make me interested in Jessica LaGore, I wanted to know more about her and her ministry and what her denomination might be since, it is off from everything I had grown up with (Lutheran/Episcopalian) other than her blog, which I did not find particularly informative I found her to be a listed Dean at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky (Does explain the overwhelming sense of "Southern Woman" I was picking up from her writing.) which is an evangelical & multi-denominational college & that she did a stint with a Methodist church. I just really hoped to find out more about her than the echoes from her book blurb. I like to have a better "connection" with my "mentors".While her faith and enthusiasm may be sound, I just don't want my relationship to God to feel like I'm being inducted in to a special club. God is not a club.

By Leah Chang I don't know if the word is timely or serendipitous, but I do know I trust Abingdon, and how timely and serendipitous that this bible study parallels the Revised Common Lectionary readings for this summer! Ideally one might read, study, and pray through the six sections of five separate lessons with a group, but with my background in theology and scripture, I gained insight from studying Set Apart on my own. Each section's / week's focus lets the reader consider their own background in (1)consecration, (2)listening, being (3)mentored and mentoring another, (4)humility--along with careful explanations of what humility isn't and what humility is, (5)worship of God / smashing and otherwise exterminating our own idols, (possibly rediscovering) (6)scripture as King Josiah and his cohorts did, as scripture saturates our entire beings, transforms our lives and actions. Chapter format includes: read the text; reflect on it, think about it, respond to it; short prayer; possible relational, social, prayer, social, political actions connected to that particular lesson."Women's Bible Study," yet nothing in the scripture texts or in the lessons Pastor Jessica LaGrone presents wouldn't equally apply to guys or teenagers of either gender. Because I was on my own, the thirty lessons allowed me to read and study one per evening without going beyond my allotted time to review the book on amazon. Each was about the right length, with plenty of material to consider and ponder. Pastor Jessica intersperses additional Old Testament and New Testament passages into the total content that provides an excellent overview of the Hebrew Bible books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings. Although she includes some anecdotes and incidents from her own experience, it isn't overloaded with "I, me, and my," simply enough to help us relate the teaching to our own daily walk.Jessica LaGrone is Dean of the Chapel at Asbury Seminary and pastors in the liberal, progressive, mainline United Methodist Church, but any Christian (guy, woman, teen) from any tradition could benefit from the perspective she brings. I love the size and shape of the book! I also like the additional sidebar content - some scripture, some observations - in the margins that also have enough space to write your own notes and comments. Set Apart is all-around outstanding; I'll be looking for more of almost the same.

Each day is broken out into:READ GOD'S WORD (the author includes all relevant scripture right in the workbook)REFLECT AND RESPOND (the author discusses the passage and invites the reader to complete exercises to study God's Word more in depth)TALK WITH GOD (prayer about what you read and learned today - the author provides a starting prayer)ACT ON IT (the author provides opportunities to help you think about your own life and how you can apply the day's lesson in your daily life)This is a beautifully done Bible study. The questions are engaging and thoughtful, helping me to dig deeper into the Word of God and applying it to my daily life. I like how the scripture is included within the context of the day's reading. The workbook is oversize, providing a lot of room for marking in the book (but you may want a separate notebook anyway!).There is also a video series for this book, which I have not seen.I definitely recommend this bible study workbook.

14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Keep Trying By Closet Loser Meh it's alright- 2.5 stars. Pretty standard in a lot of ways I think, and I was pretty frustrated by the end. The main character is 28 by the end of the book and still whines like a teenager. I don't believe it's quite as bad as some of reviewers suggest, but I also don't know how some gave it a 5 star rating unless they've never read this genre. Not a ton of challenges or heartache, and the premise of automatically being given incredible superpowers just doesn't seem genuine.

Reads like someone's first attempt at a novel By RedRaven29 Reads like someone's first attempt at a novel, based on a college student's wish-fulfillment fantasy. Basic sentence and paragraph construction is fluent, so the author should keep trying. But this one should not have been published. - Protagonist gets magic powers including immortality, plus a cuddly pet horse, plus infinite money, plus unearned gratitude from villagers, plus magic prevents obesity and can eat 2 desserts every day. Protagonist considers this "awesome". - Nothing happens. Hero is never in peril and has no love interest (except cuddly horse and easy-going wizard teacher) for the first 3/4ths of book. - I think the author researched the middle ages by watching Disney movies, rather than by reading history. This world has working magic and Gods that actually exist, but there's no church mentioned. Also no witch-hunts, no inquisition, no slavery, no peasant revolts, and no plagues or famines.

CHAPTER 1

“Get off me!” Samson grumbles angrily. “It’s not my job to give rides!”

Samson is the old mixed-breed who lives next door to me. I’ve never heard him so upset. I wonder what’s going on.

I hurry over to my fence and peek at him through the holes. Samson’s two-leg is sitting in a chair. There’s a mini two-leg sitting on Samson’s back.

The mini two-leg is smiling, which is something both two-legs and dogs do when they are happy.

But Samson isn’t smiling. And he isn’t happy.

“I said, get off!” Samson barks. He kicks his back legs in the air.

Wham! The mini two-leg falls off his back.

Whaaa! The mini two-leg’s not smiling anymore. She’s screaming. Whaaa!

Samson’s two-leg starts shouting, too. I don’t understand a lot of two-leg words. But I do understand “bad dog.” And I know that means Samson is in trouble.

Samson’s two-leg carries the mini two-leg into the house and closes the door, leaving Samson outside alone.

“I can’t believe my two-leg yelled at me,” Samson grumbles.

“Two-legs do that a lot,” says Frankie, the German shepherd who lives on the other side of my house.

I guess Frankie was watching from behind his fence, too.

“Ever since that mini two-leg came to visit, she’s been crawling on my back,” Samson explains. “It was making me nuts. So I threw her off.”

“Makes sense to me,” Frankie says.

“It’s not my job to carry a little two-leg around,” Samson continues. “I’m a dog, not a horse.”

“Right,” I say. “I’ve never met a dog who had a job giving rides to two-legs.”

Frankie laughs. “It’s not like you’ve met that many dogs, Sparky,” he says. “You only hang out with Samson and me.”

The story is great, if you have not read it. What bothers me is that the description of the story in the blurb makes it sound very different from the original story. It is about a female human down on her luck who has a shadowy past. She is forced to take a job as a dancer in a vampire-human dance troupe to pay her way through college. Sparks begin to fly between her and her male vampire partner, while issues in Rue’s past begin to surface.For more info/reviews, go to the original printing in Dead of Night. (The Amanda Steven’s novella also in that title is well worth the read as well. My advice is to buy Dead of Night and get both great stories together.)

It is the same story previously published in Night's Edge with Maggie Shayne and Barbara Hambly. This came up on my Kindle app "recommended for you", and I read the description, which led me to believe it was a new story. I pre-ordered it, anticipating something new from Charlaine Harris. This isn't even a re-write. The story isn't extended or anything; it's the same word for word. Don't waste your money. Buy Night's Edge and you'll get 3 stories, not just this one.

By Celeste Mcclain I actually enjoyed the book very much, but I'm very upset that I bought a second book thinking it was a sequal, that turned out to be the same story exactly just given another title. That book was called "Dead of Night", and it had a second book connected with it, by Amanda Stevens. I don't get what Charlaine Harris was doing. It makes me question was she deceiving her fans just to help her friend sale her book.... I just know that I'm going to leave Charlaine Harris and her books alone. I don't like the feeling of being bamboozled. Anyway after the " Sookie Stackhouse" books, she seem to have lost her skills. I wasn't happy at all!

The book is organized around the story of an American girl who comes as an exchange student to live in a Swedish family. She struggles to learn Swedish and adapt to Swedish culture, but in the process runs into a number of cultural clashes, all based on the authors’ real life experiences. Åke Daun, professor of ethnology from Stockholm University and a specialist in Swedish mentality, has examined the book and describes the way it introduces Swedish mentality as "innovative and entertaining". To facilitate the student’s learning, From English to Swedish 1 takes advantage of the close relationship between English and Swedish. Many of the words appearing in the text are similar to their English counterparts. The vocabulary of the book is basic: out of the 593 words in the glossary, 44 % belong to the one thousand most frequent words of the Swedish language as defined by Språkbanken (the Language Bank), a data base published by the University of Gothenburg. In an appendix, the similarities between English and Swedish are explained from an historical perspective, and over 300 related words are presented. Each chapter in the book contains a short grammar section presenting essentials in Swedish morphology and syntax. All grammatical terms, except the most common ones, are explained. At the end of the book there is a grammar overview with definitions of concepts and references to relevant chapters. Exercises, encouraging students to practice their vocabulary and their ability to express themselves orally and in writing, are found in each chapter. Furthermore, a number of songs with simple vocabulary are included, mainly children's songs by classic song-writers. About the Author Bengt Hällgren, born and raised in Sweden, studied theology, languages, and later engineering. Before his retirement he worked as an education and research coordinator at the University of Karlstad, Sweden. Carol Hällgren, born and raised in California, studied languages, art, and dance. Most of her professional life she has worked as a dance teacher. Bengt and Carol met as exchange students in Germany, and Carol later moved to Sweden to marry Bengt. They have since been engaged in youth exchange on both high school and university levels as volunteers, host parents, and as contact family. They have a long experience of helping exchange students and other newcomers to the country to learn Swedish.
