3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fairly good exploration of MongoDB By Patrick William Ackerman Fairly good exploration of MongoDB. Rocha Franca exposes both the low level (designing schema, creating databases and collections, queries) and higher level (indexing, node replication, and sharding) capabilities of Mongo from the perspective of someone who understands Mongo in the context of the DBMS market place. The title "MongoDB Data Modeling" is a little bit misleading, though, as this is a more well-rounded approach to MongoDB as a whole rather than specifically focusing on data modeling. In fact, there is a much more in-depth discussion on the topic of data modeling in Mongo's official documentation. The book does culminate in a useful "capstone" chapter that incorporates many of the ideas introduced earlier, showing the decision making process from deciding on the schema of a particular collection, implementing the queries in a simple Node.js application, and examining the results in the stored data.Complaints:-There is a brief foray into using the Nginx platform (for half a chapter or so), which is quickly abandoned for Node.js. I found this a bit confusing and question its purpose.-Even for such a new book, some of the examples of command results are seemingly already out-of-date. Particularly, the section where the author has you run "explain()" functions on your queries. The function still operates as you would expect and returns more-or-less the same data as shown in the book, however the labeling of said data and the format/structure of the result are almost completely different which means you will have to do some decoding/mapping to figure out the correspondence. Also, the way he formats the "explain()" function, by chaining it before "find()" did not work for me, I always had to take "explain()" out and append it to be after "find()" to get it to run.-Like most of Packt's books, several awkwardly constructed sentences, inexplicably informal word choice (why is the word "nowadays" so prevalent in Packt's non-native speakers' books?), and typos that should have been caught by the reviewers and editors. I don't blame this on Rocha Franca (or the other Packt authors), in fact, I'm often amazed at how well non-native English speakers can communicate their ideas.

Enguix Although the book is divided in 8 chapters conceptually it is divided into two parts one generic that covers general concepts, that is Part I and Part II that covers examples of using MongoDB:Part I:Chapter1 Introducing Data Modeling it is just an introductory chapter. It gives a brief explanation of what is the MongoDB document database and NoSQL databases, a brief overview of the ANSI/SPARC architecture and so on. Although some authors state that some NoSQL databases are schemaless it is not true for MongoDB given that it is used for representing semi-structured and structured data.Chapter 2 Data Modeling with MongoDB is the core chapter for a MongoDB beginner that truly fulfils the book's title. The chapter starts with a brief introduction to JSON and BSON and how MongoDB uses JSON for document notation and BSON to serialize documents. After this it is explained how flexible is MongoDB to define different document structures for the same document represented, how MongoDB uses the default _id field to define the document object id and how we can define sequence fields to assign a value although it is recommended for scalability purposes to use MongoDB default object id generation. Common document patterns are introduced for both embedded and referenced documents depending on the type of document relationship explaining when to embed or to use references.Chapter 3 Querying Documents is at the MongoDB beginner's level. It starts telling us how to specify queries with the collection's find operation, query criteria and query field projection parameters similar as done in SQL queries that return cursors for selected documents. Results will be presented as documents in JSON format. An introduction to comparison operators such as $gte, $lte and so on is presented. Also logical operators such as $and, $or, $not are presented with some examples. A small section on element operators is presented later. The $exists operator tests if a given field is defined in a document. What follows next is an example of a $regex query and array operators. This was just an introduction to MongoDB query operators because MongoDB includes a very rich set. An introduction to write operations such as insert, update and remove is presented next. Also a good explanation of write concerns or the levels of guaranteeing a successful write operations is included. Write concerns are classified into unacknowledged, the default acknowledged, journaled and replica acknowledged.Chapter 4 Indexing. This chapter for the RDBMS fellows is at the beginners level. MongoDB internal data structure for indexes uses a B-tree data structure. With the createIndex method we can create either indexes ordered ascendently or descendently. Also we can create single field indexes, multiple field indexes, multikey indexes that index arrays and finally text indexes that index string or arrays of string fields. Text indexes are more sophisticated given that string tokenization, word stemming and stop word removal is produced. The chapter ends up with TTL indexes based upon date fields, unique and sparse indexes. Sparse indexes are also special given that the index will not contain documents that do not have the indexed field.Chapter 5 Optimizing Queries. This chapter is devoted to DBAs and it delves into MongoDB query optimizer's query plans which are explained by the cursor's explain method. Three types of parameters for the explain method namely queryPlanner, executionStats and allPlansExecution provide different levels of details. By using the explain method you would be surprised to find out that a declared index is not being used and that instead an entire collection scan is being produced and so on. What follows next is an explanation of how to cover queries by projecting only the fields that are part of an index, retrieving directly values from the index. In MongoDB we can force the query optimizer to generate a query plan that uses a given index with the hint method. The chapter ends up with an explanation of read preferences for replica sets. Although it is not specified where does MongoDB stand in the CAP theorem one can imagine it according to read preference options.Chapter 6 Managing the Data. In this chapter it is explained how we can use tag sets to define read preferences and custom write concerns in replica sets. Not only we can use tag sets to declare configurations to separate MongoDB applications by application operation type but we can also define configurations to declare MongoDB applications separated geographically. What follows next is the explanation of capped collections and when to use them. Capped collections are fixed size collections with high read and write throughput in natural order, that is how they are stored on disk, without requiring the overhead of indexes. This chapter ends up by showing how to use TTL indexes to remove data after a given set of time and the shortcomings of using them.Chapter 7 Scaling: section Scaling MongoDB with sharding. MongoDB scales horizontally with the sharding technique by partitioning data and distributing it among many servers. There is a compromise between availability and consistency but the main issue about sharding is to obtain high throughput operation. MongoDB offers mainly range-based and hash-based sharding with respect to the shard key. In the choosing the shard key subsection an example of range-based sharding and shard key shortcomings is presented. Choosing the right shard key is critical to database performance. Generally speaking, shard keys must be composed of fields with high cardinality enabling data chunks to be highly distributed suited for write operations. In the case of read operations, performance throughput will be better when retrieving data from a single shard.Part IIChapter 7 Scaling: section Scaling a social inbox schema design and Chapter 8 Logging and Real-time Analytics with MongoDB contain examples of using sharding and shard keys for a distributed social inbox and how to use MongoDB to process custom log files generated by an Nginx web server respectively.Summary:The first 6 chapters and the first part of chapter 7 covers general MongoDB concepts and it is intended for beginners and intermediate readers. The second part of chapter 7 and chapter 8 are devoted to intermediate and advanced readers. Readers of this second part must set up the right environment to grasp the concepts being covered.

Before diving into technical details author takes time to introduce reader to brief history of NoSQL databases and basic concepts of architecture. From there reader smoothly continues to MongoDB's way of storing data, gets feet wet with JSON (and BSON) format and finally finds what the title promised - how the data can be modeled and tips when to use each pattern. Data modelling chapter is followed by practical introduction to MongoDB with read and write operations and indexing, everything backed by easy to understand examples. Later reader enters more advanced topics like query optimization, gets acquainted with query plans and optimizer to finally take a look at how Mongo handles replications, write concerns and finally scaling with sharding using real life example. The book finishes with a good chapter summarizing everything reader has learnt so far - author gives us concrete problem to solve and leads our way in finding not only good, but better solution.Why not 5 stars? I believe that aggregation pipeline deserved at least its own chapter highlighting concepts and possibilities. Also somehow I expected more data modeling case studies than MongoDB basics. Overally we are given a good book, just bit below my maybe too high expectations.

So much so, I read it twice, back to back.Now, understand … I don’t have a Leica.But you don’t need a Leica to fall in love with this book.Because the book is less about the Leica camera as it is about what it is to live the life of a photographer in love with his craft.It’s important to note up front that the author is more of an everyday photographer, more of a journalistic photographer, more of a street photographer . . . This is not a guy staging elaborate model shoots in Bangaldesh, and he is not roaming the Serengeti looking to photograph lions.Throughout the book we see him in there with everyday people, in the thick of it, up close ... We see him shooting fans watching World Cup soccer. We see him on a magazine assignment, shooting at a polo club. We see him shooting the a Harley Davidson bike rally in Hamburg, Germany.And again and again, the images he creates are exceptional.Most of his work is shot at 35mm or 50mm, befitting a photo-journalist and street photographer, and almost all of it is in black and white (sort of a cyanotype, really), though whether black and white or color, what I love most about his photography is that it is never routine. This is a photographer who challenges himself, who experiments and takes chances, and who ultimately creates photographs that are as technically masterful as they are just plain exciting to see. As you read this book you are in the company of an artist. You are seeing what it is to think like a true craftsman.Indeed, much of the training the book delivers on has to do with how he thought through these photographs and created them.And again, none of it relies upon carrying a Leica in your hands.Because as a teacher, Solcher is wonderfully adept. You do get bits and pieces here and there that at first glance seem specific to using a Leica — but don’t skip them: the ideas stand whatever camera you are holding. The technical ideas he relates are universal enough to help any aspiring photographer improve. And the best ideas — given in the form of assignments — are elegant and challenging enough artistically to make this book an inspirational call for us all to push ourselves further as photographers.One of the greatest lessons I drew from this book was that of seeing how deliberately, how intentionally a professional photographer goes about his task. This is no casual shooter we are encountering here. This is a pro. Yet one of the most accessible, most articulate, most creative professionals on the scene today.Whether you ever plan to own a Leica, I recommend this book heartily. I believe this book will be a treasure to any ambitious photographer who aspires to capture great photographs that elevate the human experience into the realm of artistry.- S.Postscript: As I said at the start of this review, I don’t own a Leica. Yet it’s worth noting that the Fuji X100S or X100T will give you a pretty, pretty, pretty close alternative. When it comes to Bertram Solcher’s delight in sheer portability and stealth, I suspect my Fuji X100T makes for a near enough match, even down to its aperture ring and the rangefinder experience it can provide. And the joys the author expresses at NOT lugging around a heavy, intimidating DSLR are joys I can relate to myself whenever I am walking a city with my circumspect, Leica-inspired Fuji. (Of course, that said . . . If anyone wants to take up a collection to get me a Leica now, I won't object!)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loving a Camera By Conrad J. Obregon Years ago, I used a Leica M for my photography and I delighted in the precision of this fine little instrument. However, I ultimately found that my single lens reflex was better suited to my type of photography. I still hold a warm spot in my heart for that little camera.Bertram Solcher's book is dedicated to the same fine camera. The book is a combination of memoir, instruction manual and portfolio. He offers chapters on selecting gear, planning images, composition and other basic skills, and yet there is little that actually tells you about the Leica M. Each chapter involves a bit of narrative, a photo exercise and a discussion of a particular assignment the author had, either self-created or assigned, and the photographs he made for the assignment. Although he often describes himself as a photo-journalist, from the images in this book, I think of him as a street photographer.This book practically cried out to be liked; it's about the affection a photographer has for his camera. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to generate a similar affection for me in the book. Perhaps I would have liked the book more if it had detailed the ways that the Leica M could be used differently than other cameras and how those uses could be used to create more effective images than other cameras but the book didn't. Consider the chapter on rules. The author briefly mentions a few composition rules, like the rule of thirds or those relating to the use of depth of field. His discussion is at best cursory, and then he tells us we don't have to follow the rules. There is no detail to hone the reader's skills or understanding of the rules. There is no attempt to relate the rules to the characteristics of the Leica M. If one understands the rule well enough, one doesn't need to be told they can be broken. Moreover, few of his images are offered to support what he is teaching.There is plenty of white space in the text. Often this can help to explicate the content of a book, but here it looks like it was just necessary to fill the pages of what might otherwise be a long essay.As to the images themselves, when I compare them to the works of the great street photographers, I find that they don't reveal enough, often offering odd angles rather than insights. One of the problems of street photography is that the line between snapshots and art is a fine one, but too often I felt the images were on the wrong side of the line. I did enjoy the images of the author's daughter which showed the photographer's love for her. I would much have preferred more images and fewer words, so that I could at least better judge the artistic merit of Solcher's work.I had expected that this book might make me want to get my hands on a Leica M again. It did not.

If you want something on how to use a Leica M (what can you need to know that is not obvious?) this is not your book.

About the Author Asa Larsson was born and grew up in Kiruna, Sweden. The former lawyer's first book, The Savage Altar, was published in 2003 and won the Swedish Crime Writers' Association prize for best debut novel. Its sequel, The Blood Spilt, was chosen as Best Swedish Crime Novel of 2004. The previous Rebecka Martinsson novel is Until Thy Wrath Be Past.Laurie Thompson is the distinguished translator of the novels of Henning Mankell and Hakan Nesser, among others.

The bear is tracked, and then killed. Human remains are found in its stomach. In the nearby town of Kiruna, Sol-Britt Uusitalo has been brutally murdered, and her seven year old grandson Marcus is missing. What is the connection between these events?Prosecutor Rebecka Martinsson is initially assigned to the murder investigation, until one of her colleagues (Carl von Post) contrives to have her removed. He takes over the investigation and Martinsson takes leave. But she doesn’t stop thinking about the case, or looking into it.There’s a second older story woven through the novel. One hundred years earlier when Kiruna was a new town, Elina Pettersson, a young school teacher arrives determined to make a new life for herself. She falls in love, is betrayed and then brutally murdered. The story of who betrayed Elina and who murdered her and why makes sad reading.The story moves between the contemporary investigations into Sol-Britt Uusitalo’s murder, the fate of her grandson Marcus, and the story of Elina Pettersson. The connections between the stories gradually become clearer as does the motive for murder. Rebecka Martinsson has to make a number of choices, and one of them tore at her heart (and mine).This is my first Åsa Larsson novel, and I’ll be looking to read the others. Rebecka Martinsson is an intriguing character, as are some of the others who people the novel. Dogs are also important in this story, with one in particular being a hero. It’s black and bleak, but there’s hope as well – for some. An OK Read By avidbookreader I'm a big fan of Asa Larsson and feel she gets it mostly right with the character development and plotting set in the northern and remote region of Sweden. Her stories are atmospheric and her settings which take place where she was born - Kiruna, is very well written and is a significant part of the ongoing journey of the main protagonist, Rebecka Martinsson. Martinsson is a lawyer by trade and she has had some cases that have had serious impact on her mental psyche. The crimes in the stories which are five so far and its impact on the characters are dealt with in a realistic fashion.In THE SECOND DEADLY SIN, I am unsure of what sin the author is going for in here as it seems to heavily hint at avarice which is the third deadly sin not the second. But no matter, the story has two story lines with one of them set in the past during WWI and goes into the origins of Kiruna, a mining town, that was instrumental in providing iron ore to other countries during the war. The present day investigation involves the suspicious deaths of several people throughout the most recent years and the present murder of a woman found stabbed to death in her bed. Her grandson, who probably witnessed the murder, is traumatized by the incident. The story tries to untangle the family tree to point to links to will lead to a viable motive.What made this story less compelling was the WW1 storyline that involved a doomed school teacher. It was cliched and predictable. The present day murder case was a bit convoluted with Rebecka being pulled off the preliminary investigation for no good reason only for her to do some sleuthing on her own. The office politics thatI usually enjoy was more of a nuisance in this entry. The ending was a mixed bag with over the top action sequences. Those who decry the author of animal cruelty in her books (not me) will have a field day with this one. In my decision to rate this book three stars, I am basing it more on story development rather than character development which continues to move along strongly. I look forward to Asa Larsson's next book. My favorite of hers continues to be UNTIL THY WRATH BE PAST.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another good read from Asa Larsson By Nitenurse This is book #5 centered on the tenacious prosecutor Rebecka Martinson. I am hooked on the series and could not wait to read this latest offering from Larsson. I was not disappointed and finished the book in one day. I was NOT entirely able to guess the killer in this one! The usual characters are back – Martinson, Inspector Mella, Erickson, and Rebecka’s love interest, Mans, though he is in the background this time around. I thoroughly enjoy Larsson’s descriptions of the stark winter Swedish scenery/weather and they add to the darkness of the plot. The introduction of Marcus, a child who witnessed his grandmother’s murder, added to the story and I suspect he will be seen in future books. Erikson’s and Martinson’s dogs also brought some lighthearted enjoyment to the story. Larsson gives more insight into Erickson in this story - not sure if the relationship between Rebecka and he will continue or will she return to the brooding Mans in Stockholm? Regardless, these are good mysteries showing the evil that lurks within humankind. I am hoping we do not have to wait too long for the next one.

I found this edition to be organized much better andincludes photos. This book is full of useful and relevant information onbuilding a customized trauma kit. But, Morgan also goes into additionalcomponents such as medications and supplies for medical situations as well astrauma. The medication section covers both prescription and non-prescriptionmedications. I really thought some useful information was provided especiallywhen considering giving medication to other people. Excellent and Insightful Information By Talon Building a Trauma Kit, 2nd Edition by Gunner Morgan is a great book with excellent ideas on how to build a quality kit that fits my individualized needs. This book is backed up by research that is provided in the references. The recommended items in this book will treat severe bleeding, open chest wounds, and provide a patent airway. Other valuable information and tips are provided as well. There was some very good insightful information provided on topics relating to wound suturing and utilization of tampons for severe bleeding. What is trendy is not always good to use and this book covers those situations.If you get this book I also recommend his other book, Trauma Care for the Worst Case Scenario, 2nd Edition. Both of these books will get you up and running with quality information.Very highly recommended.

From Akaela to Immunity and all her short stories in between, I've quickly been drawn into her unique brand of fiction, showcasing her expertise in science as well as her ability to bring along strong storytelling elements for the ride.When I saw she had a new story in her Mayake universe -- The Gaijin Girl -- I was immediately on for the ride. This one is a slow burn, with an emotional gut punch you think you see coming, but it still blindsides you in the end anyway. The story starts out with a brilliant hook:"Sometimes I dream of flying. No wings, no engine. Just me in my white uniform, arms spread wide..." It ropes you in and then shows you a different side to her Mayake world that I imagine we'll be seeing a lot more of with the imminent release of her next novel.I'm buying what Giogi is selling and am glad I had the chance to read this story.

Lilun is a sixteen-year-old girl, living in a contained, sterile world in the year 2214. Raised by an artificial intelligence with no in-person interaction with other human beings and protected from the dystopian world outside, she is bored with her daily routine, only interacting with a virtual world. Her only companion, Narai, educates her and supervises her intellectual and physical development. But one day, her routine is broken, because today is a special day. Why this day is so special and why she is isolated from others, I will leave for the reader to discover.Giorgi perfectly captures the mood of a teenager yearning to experience the world directly through her five senses instead of seeing it through virtual eyes. Lilun’s understanding that this is a gilded cage that severely limits her freedom and makes her sad but she’s able to transcend this when she dreams and feels the unbridled joy of paradise unfolding before her. The story poignantly captures these emotions, effortlessly enveloping the reader in the story and sharing Lilun’s vivid journey with us right on through the unexpected twists and the stunning finale.This short story connects to the author's "Mayake Chronicles" trilogy. I've read the first book in the trilogy and very much enjoyed it so this story was a delightful treat in this world she created. It can easily stand alone if you haven’t read any other stories set in this dystopian land. But fair warning, once you read this story, you will want to see what other tales the author has in store for you. By TeeKay This short story completely captured my imagination, and Lilun, the main character, captured my heart.Lilun has grown up in virtual--albeit comfortable- prison. She's lived in sensory deprivation--white everything, walls, furniture, clothing...The story goes through the build up of days leading to the coronation of the new queen. It's all supposed to change. People will mingle, not be kept in isolation. And she'll get to see the real world, not what the simulators have allowed her to experience. And than it comes, that crazy twist at the end of the story. Outstanding!Part of the Mayake Chronicles, this is a glimpse at the other side of existence, far different than the inhabitants of the book "Akeila". This is fine as a standalone, but I can't imagine you wouldn't want to read the rest of the series. Aethel is up next for me. Can hardly wait.Giorgi is one of the most underrated and unsung writers today. Her science background shines through in everything she writes (I've read most).

By mark bordner Good ol' fashioned sci-fi with some comedy mixed in translates into simple fun. I light read that entertains from cover to cover. Intrigue was never so delightful. The main characters seem to be unable to stay out of trouble even when on vacation.

By Jimbo's Awesome SF/F Reviews Once again, Madden transports us to a world where hijinks and hilarity abound. Just like the first book (entitled simply The Starhawk Chronicles) this is classic Space Opera in the Spaghetti Western mold with a bit of comedy to lighten things up. This time it feels like he tossed in just a dash of Scooby Doo as well. I had a lot of fun with the detective work angle of this book. I kept looking for Velma to walk in like “Jinkies!” It didn't happen but there's always the sequel right? And there is a lot right with a starship captain that would fit perfect in a ten gallon hat. Madden may have watched a little bit too much Firefly but that's not exactly a bad thing.All games aside though, Madden does do a very good job of mixing genres. Mystery and Science Fiction just work when done right and he does it right. Granted, they get a bit of help from an unexpected source but that happens in many mystery novels and TV shows as well as, probably, real life.The fight scenes in this tome were pretty epic. I always feel like scraps are going to be pretty small with a crew the size of the Starhawk's but not this time. They may be small but they are mighty... and they bring friends. Also, Jesse is smart enough to know why he should bring an artillery piece to a pistol fight. He doesn't play and neither does anyone else on his crew. When the balloon goes up they know how to react and it's usually effective, but seldom pretty.

By Ralph Guadagno After the first book, I kept waiting for the second installment in the story arc, and let me tell you this book does not disappoint. I just couldn't put it down from the moment I started reading it... Let me tell you this much, if you enjoy sci-fi with touch of action and add a splash of some comedy mixed in then this a must read for you. The story will entertain you from the very first sentence till the last. The characters just can't help but find trouble around every corner even though they are supposed to be on vacation. So if your looking for a book that will take you on an exciting journey then strap on your seatbelt, and get your blasters ready....

The Mountain Story BEFORE My boyhood home on Old Dewey Road stood among similar clapboard bungalows in the older, grimier section of Mercury, upwind of Michigan’s largest rendering plant, with the train tracks near enough that I could distinguish passenger from freight by the way the house shook. A year and a half after my mother’s accident—that’s what we called it—my father briefly got sober and painted the entire house, inside and out, a dark, flat blue. Drowning Man Blue. Frankie said it was a tribute to Glory. She loved the color blue. Frankie said I was too young, only four years old when she passed away, to have an honest recollection of my mother, but I do. Glory Elizabeth Truly. In my favorite memory she wears a silky white dress with batwing sleeves—one I’ve never seen in photographs. She’s standing in front of a dressing room mirror, smiling at our reflection, and behind us is another mirror where I discover our infinity. “Always,” I say. My beautiful mother laughs and tells me I’m clever before covering my face with soft kisses and spinning me in her embrace. I glimpse us with each turn. Glory looks like an angel in that white dress. I remember the mornings with my mother the most, watching her get ready for work (kindergarten teacher) while Frankie (“entrepreneur”) slept upstairs. We talked in whispers as she made up her pretty face and spritzed her curls with lemon-scented hairspray. Before disappearing out the door, she’d turn to smile and then lay her hand on her heart to say she kept me there, even when she was away. After she died, Frankie had her name tattooed on his forearm—Glory, in a rainbow that arched over the word Always. I used to think it would have been truer if the tattoo said Glory Once or Glory Briefly or, even better, Sorry, Glory. I have never, to my recollection, called Frankie by any name other than his first. My ears were filled with the sound of it, usually shouted, often slurred, by the strangers who came and went from that smoke-choked blue house. Men who slammed doors and broke bottles. Women I didn’t know cooking food I wouldn’t eat. Children I’d never seen playing board games I didn’t own. I remember one time Frankie tossed me a package of gum and warned, “Share that with your sisters.” I turned around to find two freckled redheads I’d never seen before sitting behind me on the couch. Glory Always? She was only twenty-five (Frankie a full decade older) when she died. I have my mother’s smile, I’ve been told, but otherwise I’m the image of my father. I remember after a second-grade lesson about immigration, I’d asked Frankie the details of my heritage. He told me that Glory’s family came from England when she was a baby and that her parents, both older physicians, had died of natural causes before my mother graduated from teachers college. Frankie guessed they wouldn’t have liked him. It did occur to me that if Glory’s parents had lived longer, I might never have lived at all. When I asked about his side of the family, Frankie hesitated. He was secretive about his past, like me. “On my father’s side we were Trulinos until the nineteen thirties, but then my grandfather decided he wanted a more American-sounding name, so he changed it to Truly and that caused a rift and that’s how we ended up in Michigan. On my mother’s side we’re French Canadian and Cree. My cousins came down to visit us from Quebec one time. They were dark and lean. Badass. I take after my mother’s side. That’s how come I’m so stealthy. Why I like my feet bare.” There was this rotting cedar porch out front of our blue house from which I’d leap as a boy—towel-cape aflutter behind me—shouting, “I am Batman,” or “I am Superman,” but I remember one day I lost my cape, and I’d simply shouted, “I am . . . ME!” Frankie slammed his palm on the kitchen table and hollered through the open window, “That kinda arrogance’ll take you to Cleveland, Wolf! Cleveland and back!” Whether he meant to encourage, mock, or scold me, I still have no clue. My father has left me, my whole life, in a state of wonder. One spring day when I was thirteen, Frankie stood up from the kitchen table and announced, “We need to be near family now,” like the tragedy of my mother’s death was ten days, and not nearly ten years, old. “What family?” “We’re moving to California. This summer.” “Okay.” “We’ll stay with Kriket till we get on our feet.” I’d never been to California and neither had Frankie. I’d never met his sister Kriket (Katherine) and never knew them to be close. I figured Frankie had gotten himself into some kind of trouble in Mercury, a debt he couldn’t repay, or maybe he’d slept with somebody’s wife or girlfriend or sister or mother. You wouldn’t think women would go for an unemployed widower in a stained concert T-shirt, but there were plenty of pretty girls around to finger the rainbow on Frankie’s Glory Always tattoo. “I reek of pheromones,” he told me once, flapping his hands around his armpits, encouraging me to take a whiff. We made a plan to head for Kriket’s place in the California desert in late July. Frankie was vague when I asked about the future of the little blue house. (Later he told me he’d lost it in a bet.) He bulldozed Glory’s toiletries from their bathroom shelf shrine—the lemon-scented hairspray, prescription ointment for a patch of eczema, an unopened box of decongestant to relieve her springtime allergies—and threw them all into the trash. “Won’t need all this where we’re going, Wolf,” he said, which made me wonder why we’d needed it where we were. I spent a lot of time at the Mercury Public Library when I was kid. Frankie sent me there to borrow books by way of free babysitting. Miss Kittle was the head librarian, a buttoned-up brunette who, along with the rest of the staff, barely tolerated me. I couldn’t blame them. I stole doughnuts from the seniors’ meetings, made a mess of the shelves, and spent far too much time in the men’s room. Still, I loved the library. I loved books. I especially loved plump, berry-scented Miss Kittle. A few weeks before we left for the desert, Miss Kittle surprised me by calling out my name when I walked through the library doors. “Wolf Truly!” There was something different about Miss Kittle—her cheeks were pinker and her lips were glossed and her thick dark hair fell in waves over her shoulders. By the look of her face I wasn’t in trouble, which confused me. “I have something for you, Wolf,” she said. Miss Kittle had never spoken directly to me before. “Okay.” “I heard you were moving to Santa Sophia.” Her eyes were even prettier up close. “My aunt Kriket lives there,” I said. “That’s where I’m from,” Miss Kittle said. “My father still lives there. I visit every summer.” “California’s a long way from Michigan.” My cheeks were hot. “I had to move up here to help take care of my grandmother. I miss the desert.” “I’ll miss winter.” “Ah!” she said, raising her index finger. Then she reached beneath the counter and drew out a large, heavy book. “You won’t have to miss winter.” “I won’t?” “You’ll have the mountain,” she said, passing me the hefty book. “The Mountain in the Desert.” The moment I glimpsed the photograph on the cover—a helicopter shot of the pine-rimmed granite peak—I knew that mountain contained my destiny. The details leaped from the pages like some 3-D déjà vu: ten thousand feet at the summit; mother of the transverse mountain ranges; hundreds of miles of pristine wilderness; hunting ground of the Agua Caliente band of Native Americans; habitat of bighorn sheep, mountain lions, rattlesnakes; precipitation ten times higher than what falls in the desert below; torrential rains in spring and fall, blizzards in winter. It was a place I’d never heard of but felt that I’d already been. “You have to climb to the peak,” Miss Kittle said. “That looks pretty high.” “You take the tram most of the way,” she said, turning to the back of the book and pointing to a full-page photograph. “The ride up is almost vertical. Look.” It was. “This tramcar takes you from the Desert Station—the climate of Mexico—to the Mountain Station—the climate of northern Canada—in less than twenty minutes. Palms to pines.” “Cool,” I said. “You can climb to the peak from there. I only made it once,” she confessed. “It was cloudy.” “Too bad.” “Maybe I’ll try again when I’m in Palm Springs this summer to visit my father,” she said. “You should.” “Maybe I’ll see if you and your dad want to come with me. Frankie—right?” She blushed. Oh no, I thought. Frankie never came into the library, so I couldn’t imagine where the two had met. “Frankie. That’s right,” I said. “Do you know where in Santa Sophia your aunt lives?” “Verdi Village,” I said, remembering what Frankie told me. “Sounds familiar. I think it’s gated.” I knew nothing about gates. “Most of the gated places have golf.” VERDI VILLAGE did not have golf. Or gates. Or shimmering pools. Or tennis courts. Or decorative fountains. Or paved roads for that matter. Santa Sophia was a tidy desert town consisting of mostly guarded, affluent communities. But past the mission-style shopping malls, and beyond the fuchsia bougainvillea and the median beds of white aggregate and flowering cacti, and over the abandoned train tracks, thousands populated the thrice-foreclosed-upon Verdi Village mobile home development that bled out over two square miles of hard-baked, treeless earth. The original double-wide, pitch-roofed aluminum trailers were run-down, but at least they still had electricity and running water, unlike the second strata of mobile housing grown from the seeds of Airstream and Coachmen and Four Winds. Past that, the vagabonds had erected a haphazard crust of shacks and shanties, shelter for economic refugees, the mentally ill, and bikers. Locals called the place Tin Town. In those dangerous narrows grew children who knew too much too young but, sadly, always seemed to learn too little too late. It was hot as hell in Tin Town—it set the most records in the state for triple-digit temperatures. I can still smell the unwashed bodies and twice-fried sausage, cigarette smoke and cat shit; and I can hear the discontent like bad radio reception. But mostly I can feel it—the wind, constant through the San Gorgonio Pass, polishing the earth and nourishing the groves of wind turbines along the desert roads. You can see those ribbons of straight white stalks from eight thousand feet up the mountain. It’s a hell of a view.

Thrilling and thoughtful By Kate Vane Wolf at eighteen is a loner, child of a dead mother and a waster father, mourning the loss of his best friend, Byrd. One day he sets off up the mountain he and Byrd used to hike together with the intention of killing himself. Instead a chance encounter means he and three women become lost.The frame for the story is a letter from Wolf to his son, who is about to go to college. He is going to finally tell his wife and son the whole truth about what happened on the mountain. This tells us not only that Wolf made it back, but that he went on to have a very different life from the one he led before, and to give his son the kind of life he never had. He also tells the reader, right at the beginning, that not all of the three women survived.This is clever because it invites you not only to speculate about which of the women will die, but to consider, horribly, who you want it to be. And even while you know that there is no causal link between who `deserves' to live and who actually does, having those thoughts makes you complicit.Wolf's narration weaves together events on the mountain with the story of his life up to that point. It is well paced and dramatic. The characters are interesting and complex, the humour darkly dry. Wolf's father Frankie is both recognisable as a type and unique in his casual cruelty and neglect of his son. The scenes on the mountain feel convincing and the plot twists escalate the story. Occasionally a character does something stupid that just happens to crank the tension even higher, but given that they are cold, exhausted and dehydrated that is within the bounds of plausibility.The author asks some subtle questions about the nature of belief, of life's purpose and spirituality (look out for the character names) but she leaves the reader to come to their own conclusions. She keeps you guessing right till the end. She wraps up the loose ends (perhaps a little too neatly, given how unflinching the rest of the story is). I was gripped the whole way through and loved the voice of Wolf, with its heartbreaking mix of nihilism and hope.-I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The Mountain Story By Kindred It's best to read The Mountain Story as a parable of some kind instead of an adventure story about survival though it certainly holds up as such. There are plenty of heart stopping moments for the outdoorsy type as well as the couch potato and the story never wavers in its thrills. I just had a hard time putting these four people in the situation that caused the emergency. Stranger things have happened, and probably happened to you, but it was such a comedy of errors and bad judgments that it kept this one at four stars when the descriptive writing and thrilling story telling kept asking for five stars. The plot line wandered off and got in trouble faster than the characters.And speaking of characters, each of the four strangers who find themselves in danger, have their own reasons for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Wolf, the troubled eighteen year old who suffered more tragedies than someone his age should bear causing him to wish to say goodbye on the mountain, the older wise crone character, Nola who was on the mountain for her own goodbyes, Bridget, the aging neurotic in her mid- thirties who lives in her own reality that rarely overlaps the one surrounding her, and Vonn, the young woman who can’t seem to connect with anyone in a real way.The best thing the author did here was not make any of them ‘the’ hero. Each of them act in the wholly human way we all would if faced with such trauma as trying to survive on a cold mountain with no supplies and no idea what to do next. Wolf is set up as the one who had a small amount of knowledge from his trips up with his best friend, but his plans had not included coming down this time so he is as unprepared as the others. As the story progresses you find your loyalties shifting constantly and at times I found myself wishing I was there so I could happily throw each one of them off the mountain myself. That the author manages to continuously turn our opinions again and again is a monument to her talent.Frankly I wasn't expecting to love this book. I’m so so about the epic man vs. nature tale, but I actually devoured this one on the edge of my sofa. Even the conceit of the story being told by letter by Wolf years later to his son adds several surprises, some easy, some difficult. I recommend this one to just about everyone, just remember to forgive the characters a few moments of stupidity. After all, who can say when one decision will mean life or death? I now look forward to reading Ms. Lansen’s previous books.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Mountain Story By Carol M The Mountain Story is about a motley group of hikers who become stranded on the mountain in Palm Springs. It is a survival story, and it is clear from the beginning that at least one survives and at least one does not.Though there are plenty of fast-paced adrenaline moments, and some graphic/gory injuries, overall this is not a fast-paced adventure story. It is far more reflective than that. The primary character has come to the mountain in a desperate depressive state, and much of the book is his recollections of a very screwed-up childhood, remembrance of a very close friend, and mourning a recent loss. The other characters are dealing with their own issues, which are slowly revealed. This is a very tightly written book, with lots of layers and themes, and great character development.

About the Author

Samantha Snyder has been doodling her whole life. While teaching elementary school, she often drew up coloring pages and printables for her students and fellow teachers. She decided to start sharing her creations and in 2008, Doodle Art Alley was founded.

Some of these quotes are by famous historical people and all are meant to be inspirational.I got into this book thinking it was an adult coloring book. Therefore, I expected a certain level of intricacy or detail in the images. That was not so. Most of the images are on the simple side. So, you as the user, can make it more challenging by adding your own coloring techniques like shading. However, I think that makes this book accessible to a wider range of coloring enthusiasts of all ages. If you have kids, this might be the best book for you both to color in, passing it back and forth.My experience with adult coloring books only involves one other book, so that is what I have to compare with. The paper quality of this book was not what I expected either. It was thinner and the pages tended to curl a little as I worked through it (using markers, not colored pencils). The images are printed on only 1 side, so you don’t bleed through to an image on the backside. However, sometimes my markers did bleed through to the next image. So maybe this book is better suited to those using colored pencils than markers if you are looking for clean final images.Since the images are printed on only 1 side of the paper, this means you can cut them out when you are done and do additional arts and crafts with them, like hanging them about as prayer flags. Or, if you have lots of kids over, you can cut them out ahead of time and give each kid a page to color. I liked this flexibility of this particular book.The recurring theme of positivity via the quotes and sayings was a little overwhelming after a while. I’m a bit of a cynic, so I find I can only spend so much time with this book before I start having trouble taking it seriously. Also, most of the images use the same little stylistic details and coloring that same A or same G over and over again through various images was repetitive.I received this book at no cost from Word Slinger Publicity in exchange for an honest review.

By GiggleScout I love the adult coloring craze but I am not a fan of the intricate, detailed drawings. I love the illustrations with designs and quotations that either make you think or inspire. I searched through Amazon for inspirational coloring books with proverbs, quotations and poetry. Samantha Snyder did such a wonderful job with this series! I purchased 4 of them right of the start. This is volume two. There are pages with quotes from Florence Nightingale, Benjamin Franklin,Confucius (As seen in one of the photos I attached), Yeats, Tennyson, and more. There are Danish, French, Chinese and Tibetan proverbs, too.I am currently on Weight Watchers and my favorite thing to do is to choose a page to share with my fellow members. I usually choose sayings that provide support in our journey to lose weight or help someone in a time of trouble. A few members have asked where I have gotten the pages and they now own their own copies of these coloring books. Happiness, inspiration is infectious!As for what to color with: I use Prismacolor markers, Sakura Gelly Rolls and Prismacolor Pencils. If you use markers, they will bleed through so make sure you have something under the page. If you have the pencils, Prismacolor sells a blender pencil which is awesome to use and I greatly recommend it!PS. You can basically finish these pages in a sitting or sitting and a half which is awesome! No need for marathon coloring.
