"I’m an Italian-Texan woman in a family full of cops. I’m passionate and shoot before I think. You only f*ck with me if you’re stupid." Photograph cheating spouses. Hand over the evidence. Cash my check. That was my plan when I returned home to Holly Woods, Texas, and became a private investigator. Finding the dead body in my dumpster? Yeah… Given the choice, I think I would have opted out of that little discovery, especially since all three of my brothers are cops. And my Italian grandmother is sure the reason I’m single is because of my job.Of course, my connection to the victim is entirely coincidental. Until I’m hired by her husband to investigate her murder and shoved bang-smack into the path of Detective Drake Nash. My nemesis, a persistent pain in my ass, and one hell of a sexy son of a bitch. Shame he still holds a grudge from that time I shot him in the foot twelve years ago, or we could have something. In another life. So now all I have to do is avoid my nonna’s blind dates, try not to blackmail my brothers into giving me confidential police files, and absolutely do not point my gun at Drake Nash. Or kiss him. Or jump his bones. All while I hunt down the killer.Sounds totally simple—until a second body proves that sometimes things that start as coincidences don’t always end up that way…

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. It a funny, sexy, suspensful read. By Kelly Maldia This book had it all. An intelligent, strong, independent woman. A strong, arrogant, gorgeous man. Funny dialogue. Incredible sexy chemistry between our lead male and female. A thriller storyline that you had to think your way through. Great cast of secondary characters that enhanced the story.Noelle Bond is my favorite type of character. She is strong, and intelligent. She is fiercely independent. She holds her own in a male dominated field. She has strong instincts which seem to always be right. She has her priorities right: family, cupcakes, wine, margaritas and then shoes.Drake Nash is arrogant man with the looks to back it up. He doesn’t play well with others especially Noelle. Their chemistry is combustible.Throughout the story, humor was played a big part of the overall feel of the book. Noelle had such great lines and the thoughts that went through her head were hysterical. Nonna played a big part of comic relief for the book too.The secondary characters were important in this book. Each provided something that Noelle needed. Whether it was to look at the facts differently from her father, Allison and Bek giving Noelle love life advice, or her brother defending her to Nash, the characters made the book so much more. Even the small town feel of Holly Woods played an important part of the book. The mystery/thriller part was awesome. The story had me guessing who did it throughout the book. It was well done and steady throughout the book. The” who did it” storyline did speed up at the end with the intensity of the story, which was perfect.I would consider this book a must read because of the above combinations. I loved this book. This is going to be a series though. There were some things left unresolved about Noelle and Drake’s past to set up another couple books. I’m excited for it.

By Valley of the Book Doll Noelle Bond is an ex-cop turned private investigator in the small town of Holly Woods, Texas.Exposing adulterers by day and handling her persistent, Italian grandmother (who is determined to marry her off) by night. One day after lunch, a dead body is found in the dumpster located on the property of Bond P.I. Suddenly, Noelle and her P.I. team are trading in the usual married cheater case for something a bit more sinister. The issue arises when Detective Drake Nash walks onto the scene. Sharing a familiar past due to their law enforcement backgrounds doesn’t mean these two get along. While they’re busy bumping heads and tossing around sexual innuendos, the bodies begin to pile up and a connection starts to link the victims together. As much as Detective Nash wishes Noelle wouldn’t implement herself in his case, they come to find out that she’s stuck right in the middle of the investigation no matter what. Is there a threat on Noelle? Can Drake protect her from danger? And more importantly, will they be able to set aside their differences in order to catch the killer before they add to the body count?********Noelle Bond is a force to be reckoned with and as long as you buy her cupcakes, you’ll stay on her good side. She is a badass that gives that ol’ James Bond a run for his money. She oozed wit and sarcasm all while slinging a gun (or two) and eating a cupcake. On the other hand, there were moments where I wanted to slap her across the face over her thoughts and feelings toward Drake that seemed to be all over the place. You could say they have a form of a push and pull relationship, but it’s certainly more of the former. They no doubt had a lot of heavy chemistry between them that really amped the overall flow of the story. The “romance” side of their relationship—which is practically non-existent—was again, all over the spectrum so I tended to push it aside and focus on the mystery at hand. With all the questions floating around of who was who and who did what, it was so easy to become wrapped up in the storyline. I felt like I was right there with Noelle and Co. solving the case. I had my suspicions from the start and though I had the real culprit pinned right away, there were several moments where I began to consider other possible killers. Certain revelations had me stumped and questioning everyone’s motives. Some truths were revealed, but then they just opened up more questions. Slowly but sure, more pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place and the twists were the perfect treat to keep me entertained and engaged. This new series from Emma Hart shows a lot of promise. Authors embarking on something new is always nerve-wracking and can either thrive or crash and burn. Fortunately, Emma's impeccable writing ability places The Holly Woods Files series on the path to success. Long time fans have seen the sexy and sweet sides of her work, but Twisted Bond proves to be refreshing with its spontaneous thrills and mysterious events. You should have no reservations about picking up this new suspenseful novel. You'll still get comedy and sexiness, but just add a huge side of murder and mystery.

By Happy Mom of 2 I’ve got to be honest, when I saw the blurb for this book I wasn’t sure it was a read for me, but then I remembered who the author was and I figured I had to give it a chance. Well, holy hell I am sooooo glad I did. This sinfully seductive new series from Emma Hard embodies enough suspense and sizzle to keep you up past your bedtime.Noelle and Drake had chemistry beyond compare and their cat and mouse game had me all sorts of hot and bothered. Who doesn’t enjoy quick witted banter between a strong female and a devilishly handsome authoritative man?Noelle was all sorts of fire and ice. A former cop turned private investigator with an overbearing grandmother and feisty family. Her focus is always on her next case and bringing the cheaters to justice. But when her business becomes the center of an investigation in Holly Woods, she has to contend with Detective Drake Nash.Swoon now…..Drake was all domineering, authoritative, sexy and playful. Determined to get under Noelle’s skin and keep her in line, he kept a close eye on her while investigating. But somewhere along the way, keeping her close became more than his job.As their investigation heats up, they begin to spend more time together. Since he works for the dept. it should be no surprise that he would know her family. But when Det. Nash makes an appearance at a family dinner all hell breaks loose and more fun ensues. The storys focus is solving the recent murders in the quiet town of Holly Woods with enough suspense to keep you guessing throughout. The relationship between Drake and Noelle plays second fiddle but is in no way diminished. This book is different from Emma’s other works. There will not be a plethora of sexy love scenes. We get more foreplay in this book but oh….. anticipation always makes it better. If you are new to Emma’s work…#1click! If you are a die-hard Emma fan, like me….#1click! Drake and Noelle are engaging and make this a very enjoyable read. Can’t wait to see what’s next for them in the next installment in the Holly Woods Series.

Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect presents a wide variety of concepts from scholars and practitioners who discuss pedagogies of kindness, an alternative to the «no excuses» ideology now dominating the way that children are raised and educated in the U.S. today. The fields of education, and especially early childhood education, include some histories and perspectives that treat those who are younger with kindness and respect. This book demonstrates an informed awareness of this history and the ways that old and new ideas can counter current conditions that are harmful to both those who are younger and those who are older, while avoiding the reconstitution of the romantic, innocent child who needs to be saved by more advanced adults. Two interpretations of the upbringing of children are investigated and challenged, one suggesting that the poor do not know how to raise their children and thus need help, while the other looks at those who are privileged and therefore know how to nurture their young. These opposing views have been discussed and problematized for more than thirty years. Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect investigates the issue of why this circumstance has continued and even worsened today.

Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect: On the Lives and Education of ChildrenFrom Peter Lang Publishing Inc.

Review «In a bloodless policy world in which kindergarten students are being forced into college and career readiness, this volume on care as a fundamental aspect of educational practice is most welcome. I hope that this book gains a wide readership of concerned educators who believe that teaching and learning are, at their heart, built around relationships that lead to trust and support. My thanks to the editors and contributors for bringing this timely set of papers to our profession, in hopes that kids get the nurturing support that they need to become caring members of the communities that they enter in life.» (Peter Smagorinsky, Distinguished Research Professor of English Education, Department of Language and Literacy Education, The University of Georgia) «It can be easy to forget, both in education systems built on capitalistic notions of competition and conformity, and in communities of clenched-fisted critical educators, that compassion and kindness are, themselves, inherently revolutionary. I experienced Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect as a sort of tonic of counter-hegemony. The authors - scholars, educators, activists - offered me a theory-grounded hope against neoliberalism’s soul-crushing hold on public education. But equally important, they offered me a transformative vision for educational justice that is rooted in a solidarity that only can be built on critical humanism. I emerged deeply informed and spiritually nourished.» (Paul C. Gorski, Associate Professor, New Century College)

By radicalteacher This book really gets at a piece of social justice education this is often neglected: the kindness and love and care that is needed to do it right. I think a lot of social justice education writing focuses on liberatory pedagogy, but somehow the value of individual relationships and individual care and respect get left out of the picture in favor of anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-classism, anti-homophobia (etc.) teaching. Not all of the chapters were of equal interest and value to me (the ones I found less relevant to my particular teaching I just skimmed), but many were excellent. My favorites were the introduction ("God damn it, you've got to be kind."), a chapter on different approaches to teaching "Letter from Birmingham Jail" (by Endacott, Goering, and O'brien), the chapter on queer literacy pedagogy (by Cammie Kim Lin), and the last chapter, "Toward pedagogies of senseless kindness in critical education" (by Zembylas, Hattam, and Lanas). For someone like me, who has been teaching for a fairly long time, this book was a nice bit of inspiration to reinvigorate me and help me fall in love with teaching a little more. But also, I think some of the chapters should be standard reading in teacher education programs. (The queer literacy chapter seems like a must read for English teachers!)

I've been an Elle Thorne fan from the first book I picked up of hers. And it's only gotten better. Shorts are usually a satisfying escape for me. Enjoyable but not really engaging the emotions. Elle Thorne blows this away. I feel like I know each one and feel every disappointment and triumph with them. This book is about Maia and Franco. Maia has shown up before in earlier books, however if you haven't read them please don't let that stop you from starting here! She is so strong yet so vulnerable. And Franco.....holy hotness. He's alpha all the way, and man enough to let her be strong.Complex characters, engrossing plots, action, romance....it's all here. And so much more

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Escape is futile By Amazon Customer I have read all of this series and totally enjoyed them all. This book is about Maia and Franco. To say that totally Elle took me by surprise is astounding. Maiai has been in other series in the tiero collections. But to finally realise that she is a Tiero and which one was her father was completely unexpected.Franco is an alpha all the way but he is smart enough to realize that Maia has to do things her way. Follow along an see how things work out or don't. Can Maia be happy? What of her twin and nephew? What about the Tiero code?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A bit darker than others but still awesome! By Snowbunny1977 This was a bit darker than the other books. I loved it. I was wanting to know Maia's story. Its really a sad and kinda tragic story. I felt really bad for what she and her twin sister went through. Although her sister was stuck with that sicko Manuel, she was sold to the underground fighting or lent out anyways. He totally wanted her back, sadistic prick that he is. Maia now works at a strip club and strips and meets Franco. He's had a colorful past as well and is basically an assassin sort of guy and mainly surveillance. His mark for a long time was Manuel and he saw Maia and he just knew she was his. He's kept tabs on her and watched her from afar. Fell in love with her without even meeting her. Which when you think about it...kinda stalker like! LOL. Besides the point though. Although he wasn't exactly a gentleman to her, he's a good guy and protects her with his life. Maia's lineage will surprise you but I am not giving that away. :) One downer is that I do wish they had more of a relationship or rapport on a personal level. There was just so much heavy stuff going on that the romance really didn't exist in this book. That's the only negative I can say otherwise I loved it. I love Shifters Forever and can't wait to read whats next!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Amazing and addictive! By Lauren Alumbaugh Book one:this book pulled me in by the cover, it's beautiful and let you know that you're going to be taken away in a paranormal fantasy land. as soon as the story started I know it's going to be one I could not put down. the story is about Liliana in the trials and tasks she's put through after being kicked out of her home. we quickly meet Ephrem who is her long lost love. This book is filled with action romance and amazing paranormal beings. I cannot wait to read book 2 and find out where the author takes us.book 2:this series does need to be read in order for complete understanding. in book 2 we follow Lily and her mate on the most amazing journey. this book has so much action and suspense in it that your head is spinning. I have to say I enjoyed the flashbacks of the past mixed in with the present and the dream of the future. if you are a fan of wolves, gargoyles and the wonderfully unknown this book is for you. I have to say my only complaint is the length of the book you are pulled in from literally the first chapter and it's over in the blink of an eye. I cannot wait for more of this series! I am so curious to see if a war is pending or if somehow it's going to be worked out peacefully

Shifters, banished royalty, broken betrothal, opposing packs and a prophecy! I want to know so much more about the characters and this world! This is definitely going to be an amazing shifter series and I can’t wait for more!Mark TierAlexia Purdy ups the intrigue and action going into this second book of the ArcKnight Chronicles. Starting with a little taste of what Ephram went through to pay off his brother’s debt, I was swept away from the first page! I was gob smacked when I learned of Lily’s true heritage and I reverently rooted for Raphaela to get some well-deserved revenge! I love the unique background of these shifters and this world they live in. I highly recommend this book (this series) to those who love paranormal characters, excellent writing, and thrilling adventures.

By GB **I have previously reviewed gifted copies of these books separately**Review for ArcKnight:I like the storyline and characters. Liliana and Ephrem are both strong characters who I am excited to learn more about.Seems like a complicated world they live in...where the Elders of their society hold more jurisdiction than the Alpha and the Queen do. Which really made me shake my head! Both of them have been banished from their packs for things they didn't do. Both shunned and pushed to the side. Both have secrets and they both need each other.Looking forward to reading more about it.Review for MarkTier:Lots of twists and turns and lots of surprises in this book!I'm liking that we get to meet a lot of great characters, none of whom are weak. The storyline keeps getting deeper and more involved. Lots of surprising secrets are revealed in this book, lots of changes taking place. It's looking like the ArcKnight and MarkTier packs are going to have to set aside their differences and work together if they want to save their people from what's coming. I can't WAIT to see what Lily's involvement will be as the story moves forward! Can't wait to read what happens next!

The decision of whether to go to college, or where, is hampered by poor information and inadequate understanding of the financial risk involved.Adding to the confusion, the same degree can cost dramatically different amounts for different people. A barrage of advertising offers new degrees designed to lead to specific jobs, but we see no information on whether graduates ever get those jobs. Mix in a frenzied applications process, and pressure from politicians for “relevant” programs, and there is an urgent need to separate myth from reality.Peter Cappelli, an acclaimed expert in employment trends, the workforce, and education, provides hard evidence that counters conventional wisdom and helps us make cost-effective choices. Among the issues Cappelli analyzes are:•What is the real link between a college degree and a job that enables you to pay off the cost of college, especially in a market that is in constant change?•Why it may be a mistake to pursue degrees that will land you the hottest jobs because what is hot today is unlikely to be so by the time you graduate.•Why the most expensive colleges may actually be the cheapest because of their ability to graduate students on time.•How parents and students can find out what different colleges actually deliver to students and whether it is something that employers really want.College is the biggest expense for many families, larger even than the cost of the family home, and one that can bankrupt students and their parents if it works out poorly. Peter Cappelli offers vital insight for parents and students to make decisions that both make sense financially and provide the foundation that will help students make their way in the world.

Will College Pay Off?: A Guide to the Most Important Financial Decision You'll Ever Make, by Peter Cappelli

Review “It’s precisely the right moment for a book to help 18-year-olds and their parents make this important educational and financial decision... Cappelli offers some good tips: Student loans are stickier than a mortgage: You can’t escape them with bankruptcy, and you may find your wages garnished if you try to walk away from them, never mind your bad credit rating. Don’t rely on data released by colleges, particularly employment rates, which are often calculated based on dubious self-reporting surveys. When you visit a school, check out the tutoring center and see if anyone is around to help; it’s a good proxy for the campus support system. Most important, finish on time. A surefire way to erode your return on college is to graduate late or not at all.” —Wall Street Journal“Thought-provoking work... The author notes that sending children to college is a huge expense that hurts many families’ ability to meet other important needs, such as retirement. His focus is primarily on the US higher education system but many of the themes are universal.” —Emma Jacobs, Financial Times“Informative and refreshingly skeptical.” —John Cassidy, The New Yorker“If you want to figure out what to do with your life—or help your child do the same—Cappelli tells you what you need to know. College is a sweet deal for kids who hit the trifecta: attend a reasonably priced, reputable school, choose a high-earning major, finish on time. Otherwise, buyer beware.” —Barron’s“[A]stutely examines the enduring relevance of a college degree... [I]lluminating statistical and survey data… Cappelli's eye-opening report card on the current state of American education gives mounting tuitions a failing grade... Salient reading for students, parents, and educators on navigating toward a coveted college degree.”—Kirkus Reviews“A valuable, commonsensical analysis of an ever-more-important subject.”—Booklist“Cappelli’s well-reasoned and documented answer helps families evaluate their options in terms of their individual financial situation. VERDICT Academic and yet highly readable, Cappelli’s book provides nothing short of consumer protection to families and their students as he addresses the complexities of the higher education marketplace, the unpredictable job market, and the cost of college.”—Library Journal"Cappelli provides sound advice that will help students and families get more for their higher education dollars—if they decide to spend any at all. His book is a welcome addition to the growing literature that questions the 'college is a great investment' belief." —George Leef, Pope Center for Higher Education Policy

About the Author Peter Cappelli is the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at The Wharton School and director of Wharton’s Center for Human Resources. A research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, he has long been involved in federal government policy-making regarding the workforce and education. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A must-read. Fantastic book! By Marylene Delbourg-Delphis Students in the United States pay about four times more than their peers in the rest of world. So it’s no wonder there are endless conversations about whether earning a college degree is worth the expense. Dozens of entrepreneurs will tell you to forget about college — although they were lucky to be born into highly educated environments and often trained in the best universities, and dozens of dropouts who made it through backbreaking work do insist that their kids experience college.Peter Cappelli's book takes the heat out of the debate and ultimately answers this question "it depends." This non-dogmatic stand is actually courageous when everybody wants certitudes and validations. Peter's mission is to tender pointers and landmarks in maze of research data, assumptions, biases and even misinformation: "What prompted me to write this book was the unqualified statements about the big payoff to a college degree," Peter says. “While there are lots of guides to tell us whether a particular school suits the temperament of our child, there is almost nothing that helps us decide whether a college experience will lead to financial ruin. That is what I try to offer here: a guide to the factors that determine whether a particular program will pay off."Here are some of the critical topics debated in the book.Is there some shortfall of science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM graduates?Do college students major in the fields where jobs are?How important is a College student's first job?Do jobs today require more education than in the past?Is it easier to find a job as a college grad? How big is the college wage premium?Does the current gap mean that the investment in college education pays off?No matter what, getting a good job out of college is a challenge because of the changes in our society and employment landscape, which Peter Cappelli also addressed in a fascinating previous book from 2012, Why Good People Can't Get Jobs: The Skills Gap and What Companies Can Do About It. The problem starts with the fact that most employers have dropped training programs and "what they want from college graduates now is the same thing they want from applicants who have been out of school for years."— Does it mean that our education system is a problem? No— except for the costs, actual data do not support such blame: "We’ve been in roughly the same place for some time. Our students are not doing worse, and there is no evidence from the comparative data that U.S. schools are failing." Could the US government do better helping public colleges? Definitely yes.— Does it mean that colleges should only focus on practical education? No — vocational education can be a terrible dead end. Parents and students have a complex due diligence to perform in a tough supply and demand market and should try to delay choosing a major until the last minute. This book is by no means an indictment of college education: it simply implores parents and students carefully to analyze their rationale before getting into heavy debt and to take with a pinch of salt the sometimes deceptive claims of some of the for-profit colleges. The book only focuses on an alleged equation between college education and a better job. It doesn't question the value of receiving a college education and its long-term human and existential meaning. If anything, the underlying message is that it's not efficient for colleges to try to replicate the workplace on their own campus... and that they should instead focus on what they do best. The ultimate message of Peter Cappelli is clear: "Maybe the appropriate alternative is to let college do what it is good at, which is educating rather than training, focusing on knowledge and life skills rather than job skills, and to find connections into the job market through other paths."The book invites employers and colleges to think more carefully about their strategy:— Employers: Has their strategy of hiring for skills just after college actually paid off? So far, it hasn't. The cost of failed hires and bad hires hasn’t dropped. Employers' processes have been the same for almost three decades. So maybe it's time for them to look into these processes, and the burden may not be on colleges in this area.— Colleges: Colleges are hard-pressed to provide cogs in the corporate machinery with uncertain guarantee of return for students. With employers not showing better results in their human capital build-up, why should colleges cave in? Why don't colleges try to educate the market and affirm the power of education? Maybe colleges should do a better job at promoting students and alumni, which means radically revising antiquated campus recruiting products and procedures, beefing up their career services offices in order to offer a modern access to their gigantic talent pools to employers (instead of letting their students spends up to 20 to 30 hours a week looking for employers...).

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Well Organized, Credibly Documented, and VERY IMPORTANT! By Loyd Eskildson No other nation has individuals pay so much for college. College students in the U.S. (about 70% of high-school graduates) pay about 4X that of their peers in other nations. At the same time, our graduation rates are among the worst of any country. Clearly, going to college is a major investment of time and money. Unfortunately, those facing that decision must do so with very little useful information. Graduates of some programs do very well, though it is unclear how much of their success is attributable to those programs, and graduates of other programs do so poorly it is unlikely they'll ever recoup their education investments. Major pitfalls include failing to graduate or taking longer than normal to do so, high student loans and their associated costs, becoming rapidly outdated due to eg. offshoring or technological change (eg. engineering), and being misled by college-supplied data on employment prospects. It isn't even clear just what college education actually contributes to employability - perhaps what employers really value is the maturation that most go through between ages and 22, or simply the fact that getting into and completing college demonstrates a more attractive level of ability and doggedness than otherwise.Employers are most interested in the general abilities and skills that pupils should learn in any serious degree program, least interested in job-specific knowledge that new vocational programs convey. Thus, classes in logic and problem-solving are likely more valuable than learning the fine points of healthcare laws and regulations.Chapter 1 immediately gets into the heart of an important issue - 'Why Do People with More Education Get Better Jobs?' Almost two-thirds of recent graduates reported they didn't have a job closely related to their field of study, and almost 25% believed their education was not worth the financial costs. For most, the question is not so much college vs. no college, but which major and which college. Narrow, vocational degrees lock students into a single occupation, despite their possibly changing interests. The costs of attending college went up 4X over the last 20 years vs. cost of living, mostly at state universities where funds from state governments have been cut.A quarter of all the four-year college-degree programs in the U.S. take anyone with a high-school degree or equivalent. A common practice is to find more applicants and admissions.Employment claims from even the most reputable schools are difficult to evaluate. DeVry University, for example, reports 100% of its graduates with communications degrees have jobs related to their field six months after graduation. That figure is derived from voluntary reports, and there were apparently only 8 responses from communications majors out of 8,000 bachelor's degree graduates. Graduates who failed to look for a job in their field up to six months after graduation are understandably excluded. But the data also include students who already had jobs in their field prior to beginning the program; further it is not clear what counts as 'in their field.' Meanwhile, the National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that in the same year, 6.5% of graduates with communications degrees got job offers in their field. The center for Creative Learning's surveys of managers found only about 10% of the knowledge, skills, and abilities used on the job were learned in classroom experience - most comes from work experience. There is no evidence that grades predict much of anything about job performance - about 2% of the variation in job performance could be predicted by knowing grades. Google found that grades predict almost nothing about job performance, and stopped asking. Similarly with its quirky interview questions (eg. How many gas stations in Manhattan?).Education pays off when it is in demand, and doesn't when it isn't. In the 1980s, South Korea tripled the number of graduates over a decade. The wage premium associated with college fell by half. Much the same happened in the U.S. during the 1970s. Cappelli attributes the pay advantage mainly to the drop in blue-collar wages as manufacturing moved overseas, not so much to inherent benefits of a college education. He also points out that the 'premium' is volatile - in the 1960s and 1970s no gap existed. The current gap is higher for workers out of college longer. In Italy and China, college grads are no more successful than high school grads in the job market.Cappelli also contends that our current labor force is overeducated (about 30% more education than needed), and adds that organizations claiming otherwise are dominated by corporate interests with an interest in generating a surplus of qualified workers. He sees no evidence that jobs today require more education than a generation ago. About 60% of parking lot attendants have some college education, for example.A survey on employment outcomes in 2010-12 conducted by the Center for Economic and Policy Research found that 22% of recent graduates in engineering, 23% in education, 26% in health, 31% in math and computing, 36% in sciences, 47% in social sciences, 51% in business, and 56% in leisure and hospitality were in jobs for which a bachelor's degree was not even required. The lag between picking majors and degrees and the labor market when one graduates is one reason students should delay choosing their fields until the last minute. While the unemployment rate for college graduates is typically about half that for high school graduates should not be taken as evidence that there are many more jobs requiring college degrees. The vast majority of current jobs require only a high school degree or less, and the BLS predicts this will continue at least through 2022.The best example of screening effects in education comes from the GED - a one-time comprehensive test of the accumulated knowledge and skills taught in high school. Many high school graduates would struggle to pass it - especially those not college bound. However, the GED doesn't capture the ability to show up for classes, get homework done, or stay out of trouble well enough to avoid being thrown out before graduation. Those aspects are captured in the traditional high school degree. If academic skills and knowledge were the important factor in a high school education, GED holders would do as well in the labor market as high school grads do. But they do a lot worse. Ergo, finishing college reveals lots of desirable attributes about graduates beyond the academic knowledge they get from their classes. Ten years later, success in your most recent job is far more relevant.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I think the professor does a good job educating us about the costs and benefits of ... By Concerned Parent As a father of a soon to be junior and senior in high school, I read the book with the intention of gleaning whether or not college would pay off for my children and any insights into how I would go about paying for it. I came away thinking that it would pay off for my kids and an understanding of trying to pay for it (but little hope of getting any aid as I make too much). I think the professor does a good job educating us about the costs and benefits of today's college degrees with one exception that I will get to momentarily. His writing style is so clear and concise that even a slow reader such as myself was able to read the entire text in less than an afternoon while taking notes in Kindle. Granted, I skipped a lot that did not pertain to what I wanted to know. Specifically, Chapter 5 which is about getting a job after college.Kindle is the way to go as he has several calculators that he references online. Noting them and then keeping the book as a reference will be worth the 17 bucks you pay for the Kindle version. Save you a lot of time when you get to actually looking up information on schools and financial aid. I had nearly 50 notes or highlights in the book. Obviously, I found a good deal of information useful or interesting and plan to reference it in the future. I read for information. Some of you may not find the book as interesting as I did.I am not going to regurgitate what the Professor says in this review. Read the book. You will come away better educated about the costs and benefits of today's college education except in one respect. Professor Cappelli only references community colleges four times in his book (thanks Kindle). Three times it is in reference to the degrees you can earn from the community colleges and then go to work in a technical field. Only once does he mention that you can go to community college and then graduate from a four year institution and he does so in passing. He never addresses the latter as a viable option to go to college. This is a serious omission from the book and the reason for my four stars. Professor Cappelli argues that the last one or two years of college are the most important. OK, two years at a community college and two years at a regular college get you the most important years at the best college. Plus number one. Two years spent at the home town community college then two years at a four your college would significantly cut costs - reducing costs is a major plus according to the Professor. So we have two things to the plus side of community college then regular college. However, on the down side Professor Cappelli would argue that two years of community college would deny a student the full amount of "growing years" a student would receive at a four year university away from home. True, but you would still get two years away from home. Is this enough? Ah! A conundrum the Professor could tackle for us but never brings up. Then, would the "smell" of the community college drift along with the student at the hiring phase or is it again the fact that the student could have gone to the better university in the first place trump the "first college" effect as noted in the book? We don't know. Anecdotally I have a colleague that went to community college and claims a doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist and other successful business people graduated with him from his community college class. Someone has to have done some research here and the Professor doesn't say squat about it. At a minimum, he should have written up a couple of paragraphs talking about this option and saying there is no evidence in support or against it if there isn't any. I hope someone that is reading this can offer me a valuable source of any information on whether this matters or not as it offers one of the most attractive alternatives out there. Sad the Professor doesn't even bring it up. Guess my search for information continues.

I called the pace steady but there were times it seemed slow. One thing that came out in this book is a better character development. The ending definitely leaves open an interesting third book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Plenty of action, and political twists and turns By Catherine Mackay An excellant sequel that had several twists and turns and the end, I have to admit was a complete and unexpected surprise - I can hardly wait for the next book in the series just to find out what happens next. The author uses descriptive prose at great length - this may not be to some readers taste - but I believe it is needful in a future where the 'Empire' is one of contradictions. Sales' has created an Empire that is at times technologically advanced yet their space-ships almost feel like archaic wooden vessels that are so flimsy they break apart when energy directed weapons are used. Readers may feel such a contradiction odd, but the best explanation lies in the fact that the people in this future exist in tiered society that merges elements of Victorian and fuedal society together - there is no true mixing between nobility, yeoman or proles. Even the topological drive (is a way starships use to cut-down the time travelling between worlds - dimensional space) has existed for millenia without further invention or improvement - it is a universe that in a real way has become stagnant. There is good character development and interactions between characters, although I was upset when one of my favourite characters died - but I guess this shows the author is not afraid to keep it 'real' since war, by its very nature, is indiscriminate. Overall the book is well written - some proof-reading errors - it has a nice balance between action, character development and moving the story forward and the end of the book had an unexpected twist that I didn't see coming - a great read.

One of the better on KU in this genre. Too bad these characters to stupid to invent firearms or even bows. Want to read next one. Not sure convoluted reveals actually hold up to logic.

I have read all of this series, so the characters were familiar to me, but in every book, or story, we learn a little more about each of them. There are new challenges for them (again!) and they find the strength to cope with them, and keep Charleston, SC safe from 'things that go bump in the night".All the Deadly Curiosities works are fun reads, but I have to say I like the characters best. They are ghost hunters, and 'supernatural vigalanties', but they are also real people, with friendships and romantic relationships, just like anyone else. This is true even of the characters we don't get to see much of. Those are not as fully fleshed out as the main characters, but we get to know just enough about them to know there is more than we see to them. These are Gail Martin's best stories, which is saying a lot!

Kenneth Harmon is a great writer and this book was proof of his skill By Unsaintly Kenneth Harmon is a great writer and this book was proof of his skill. I loved the gritty-ness of the descriptions. I could easily follow along and I loved the development of the characters as the story continued on. There's no doubt that Mr. Harmon will get better with each novel he writes. In The Devil's Lament, Kenneth brings us the vision of Lucifer in a different form. He's not a horrific demon on the outside, he's walking around on earth in the guise of a human. Discovering Eve at old traveling Revival Tent, Harmon takes you along for the ride, while meeting interesting character's along the way. Want to find out more about this twisted tale? Pick it up and read. You won't be disappointed.

By Becky Samael is an angel, not just any angel, but Lucifer himself and he's been sent on a mission from God. He's been sent to find the Brother Silas, one who claims he can heal. When he finds the evangelist, Samael is surprised to find the woman he's loved for a millennia married to the Brother and she does not know him. They knew and loved each other from the very beginning of time, since the Garden of Eden.Cora doesn't understand why she feels as though she knows this man and how easily she trust him. When she finds out who he really is, who she is and why he's there, Cora doesn't understand how any of this could be possible. Can she remember the past, a love, for him, that has lasted through the ages? Will He finally approve of their love? The Devils Lament is a really great read and very well written. At times I felt I had the story figured out and the author would throw in a curve ball and go in a completely different direction. There were some parts that were a bit rough for me to get through, but because of how much I enjoyed the story I kept on going! I was a little bit disappointed with the ending, but would definetely recommended the read. This is a five fangs book!!Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock

I lived a life full of questions about the supernatural side of the world and many other things about the spiritual realm. Having a third eye and belonging to a family with third eyes, I came to view it as a curse. I just couldn't understand how this could become scientific. I always thought, maybe seeing things is just part of my active imagination, until this book confirms that indeed, third eyes exist and can be activated.I especially loved the part where I learned about detoxifying a gland to help activate it because it tells me, third eye is not just psychological but a physical and physiological part of me. I will definitely read this not just once, twice or thrice, but many times to convince myself that I am normal and that I just have to embrace this gift and life will never be the same again. Its a shame that many people consider this topic taboo and at times superstitious, but reading this book makes a big difference. Thanks to Debra.

Some have not heard of it, some who have think it is an art and of course, there are others who know so much about it and have even "awakened theirs". This book has been written not just specifically for those who wish to awaken theirs, but for those who know nothing about it, for those who think it is an art and perhaps for those who are still decisive about whether to awaken it or not because they do not know its benefits. In great details, the awakening of the third eye was explained in the pages of this book and some really nice benefits were also included. After going through this book, you will have just about enough information you need to know about the third eye and also,a great detail of information on how to awaken it if you so wish, having on your finger tips, the benefits that you will enjoy when you do so.

    WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2

The past twenty-four hours of my life have been so disgustingly NAUSEATING that I’m actually starting to feel like a . . . puddle of . . . um, cat . . . VOMIT!! First I ruined my brand-new sweater with a PBJ and pickle sandwich (a long story). Then I got hit in the face by a dodgeball during gym in front of the ENTIRE class and ended up trapped in a wacky fairy tale (an even longer story!). Okay, I can handle the utter HUMILIATION of walking around school OBLIVIOUS to the fact that a SANDWICH is stuck to my abdomen like duct tape. Hey, I can even handle a mild concussion. However, what I CAN’T handle is the fact that “someone” started an AWFUL rumor about me! I overheard two CCP (Cute, Cool & Popular) girls gossiping about it in the bathroom. Rumor has it that my CRUSH kissed me (at a charity event last weekend) on a DARE merely to snag a FREE large pizza from Queasy Cheesy! Of course I totally FREAKED when I heard it! Not only is a dare like that rude and insensitive, but it’s a very cruel joke to play on a person like . . . well . . . ME! I was SURE the whole thing was a big fat LIE! Sorry! But everyone knows Queasy Cheesy pizzas are just NASTY! Had it been a dare for a yummy Crazy Burger, I’d TOTALLY believe it! Hey, I’ll be the first to admit, that rumor could have been A LOT worse. But STILL . . . !! I just wish “someone” would stay out of my personal business. And by “someone,” I mean my mortal enemy . . . MACKENZIE HOLLISTER !! I don’t know why that girl HATES MY GUTS! It wasn’t MY fault Principal Winston gave her a three-day detention for “unsportsmanlike behavior” for slamming me in the face with that dodgeball. I’m really LUCKY I’m not in a COMA right now! Or undergoing life-threatening surgery . . . Anyway, as punishment for what MacKenzie did to me, she has to clean the bug-infested showers in the girls’ locker room. Unfortunately, I learned today that the bug problem in there is REALLY bad!! I was sitting behind MacKenzie in French class finishing up my homework when I noticed there was something stuck in her hair. At first I thought it was one of those fancy designer barrettes she loves to wear. But when I took a closer look, I realized it was actually a gigantic dead STINK BUG!! EWW !! That’s when I tapped her on the shoulder. “Um, MacKenzie! Excuse me, but I just wanted to let you know that—” “Nikki, WHY are you even talking to me?! Just mind your OWN business!” she said, glaring at me like I was something her spoiled poodle, Fifi, had left in the grass in her backyard.

Step into the mind of a bully--the strongest entry in the series thus far By KarToon12 Ever since the first book, I've become a fan of the Dork Diaries series. (Basically, it's Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but for girls). Despite being way past the intended age group for these books, I've found a kindred spirit of sorts in Nikki Maxwell--the artistic dorky girl who just wants to make friends, survive middle/high school, and stay one step ahead of the school's queen bee and number one bully. While some of the dialogue can get repetitive at times, the artwork to go along with the story more than makes up for it, and makes the plots that much more hilarious (and it's a big step above the stick figures in the aformentioned "Wimpy Kid" books, considering the main character goes to art school in the summer). In this installment, Nikki's number one bully, MacKenzie, finally goes too far when she instigates a fight between Nikki and her crush, Brandon; spreading rumors that the kiss he gave her (in one of the previous books) was just done on a dare to get free pizza. Things then take a turn for the ultimate worst when MacKenzie manages to steal Nikki's diary, and uses the info contained within to hack into Nikki's "Miss Know it All" website and write nasty responses to the students using the help line, in an effort to frame Nikki for cyberbullying and get her expelled. And in the meantime, MacKenzie writes a few scathing journal entries of her own. Will Nikki get her diary back? And can they stop MacKenzie's mean pranks before they cause serious damage?I'll just say it right now; I think this installment was one, (if not the most) strongest entry in the series thus far. MacKenzie has been the series' villain all the way since the beginning; being nothing but a snobby, popular girl, who's super rich and seems to have it all. But it's not until now that we FINALLY get an insight into how her usual day is, and how her mind works, and just why exactly she hates Nikki so much. We get her thoughts on her actions throughout all the previous books, as well as learn what her home life is like. While yes, she IS very rich, and almost always gets what she wants, a keen eye will be able to tell that not everything is as perfect and stable as she thinks it is. Both her and Nikki have to deal with having an annoying, younger sister; the big difference being that while Nikki tries her best to teach Brianna to do the right thing, MacKenzie just stoops to doing what her parents do, and just buys her whatever she wants to keep her quiet. (Not to mention, she leaves her sister unattended in a playground while she goes shopping.) While her tastes are expensive, she DOES have a limit on her allowance. And more than once, she's caught in a lie; early in the book, she brags to Nikki about how expensive her "designer" lipstick is, only for the audience to find out later she bought it at RiteAid.The most pressing thing to note, however, is her parents/family. While Nikki's life can be hectic, she always at least has the loving support of her parents, sister, and her best friends. MacKenzie, on the other hand, is virtually ignored by her parents, who are always on some kind of trip, or are too busy to give her the proper attention. At one point, MacKenzie is trying to talk to them about something important, to which her folks just carry on with what they're doing, without giving her so much as a glance (until she starts screaming and crying). And if MacKenzie DOES have a serious problem she needs to talk about, her folks just send her off to a therapist. And her "friends" aren't much better; the second an embarrassing video of MacKenzie hits the internet, her "friends" are quick to dump her as the school Queen Bee, and find a new, "better" popular girl to hang out with. Suffice it to say, MacKenzie has a lot of issues and insecurities as well, but chooses to deny and hide it underneath a pile of lies and shameless flaunting of what material luxuries she has. Most of all, this book depicts one of the worst cases of cyberbullying I've ever seen. As MacKenzie puzzles out who the anonymous letters to "Miss Know it All" are from, she sends mean and cruel responses in an attempt to make Nikki look bad, damage her reputation, and ultimately get her expelled from school. This not only hurts Nikki, but is also damaging to the people getting the letters. To this, I say this book should become a MUST read, in an effort to teach kids just how hurtful bullying really is, and how damaging the consequences could be. (As well as getting into the mind of a bully themselves, and why they do the things they do.)One interesting thing to note, however, is that once MacKenzie gets a hold of the diary, she also draws accompanying illustrations. It's easy to forget that she too is an artist (if one remembers the very first book). As much as I hate to say it....I actually kind of like MacKenzie's artwork just a bit better than Nikki's. She draws the characters much more realistically, and her art is probably closer to what the characters would look like in real life. Not that I don't like Nikki's art style (she typically draws more realistically for serious entries, and goes with the "anime head on a stick figure with mitten hands" look for silly/funny entries). I guess just after reading eight books with the same artist, it was a nice change of pace to see a different art style for a bit.I'd reccommend this series for ages 8 and up. While there's no mention of drugs, or sex, or swearing, there's other topics that crop up that tend to only be heard by the middle school crowd (such as getting cell phones, throwing wild parties, and first kisses).
