The author busts some of the common myths about what being a writer really is. I know—I am one. She has a nice personable style to her writing, like sitting in a coffeehouse with a friend who’s telling you the truth about that boyfriend (fear of writing) you think you’re not in love with.As I read I’m getting a lot out of this book. For example the minimalistic formatting with bold where it needs to be proves to me that this author knows how to make a book “scannable.” Not an easy thing to do.There’s a lot of tried and true advice as reminders in this book and any new author will find it helpful as they ramp up the courage to start writing, whether it’s for a living or not.Favorite nugget: “You don’t have to be the ultimate expert before you start writing a bookbecause the process of writing a book is a journey toward expertise.” Amen, sister! Not all fluff—some great actionable and outlined how-to advice in this book. I’m a big fan of how in ”how-to” books.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. A no nonsense guide to getting that idea out of your head and onto the page. Morgan really knows her stuff. She covers every base and leaves you feeling confident and courageous. Worth every penny!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. LOVED this book By Becky Corinne is an analyst who does market research and lives her personal life the same way. Her parents put her and her sister off on to their grandmother to raise so they could live in the fast lane, including an open marriage. Corinne is determined not to be like her parents and is completely satisfied with her career and the life she has chosen. Until she meets businessman Corey who is her bosses best friend. They have been both warned to not get involved as they have nothing in common and will only lead to getting hurt. Corey wants Corinne to come to Hilton Head to do market research while he researches Corinne. He obviously is attracted and wants to know what makes her tick and why she is all business all the time. I just LOVED this book. I loved the mind games they played with each other, the quips back and forth and that untold sexual tension that Corinne tries so hard to hide. I also like how the author uses Corinne's conscious has conversations with her. This book was fun, and very sexy. Something definitely to read on cold winters day. Yes its predictable, but what a way to get there.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not up par. By Ms. T Would not recommend this book. It's trite and slow moving. Definitly not up to the Delinsky standard. Most of the time I will buy her books just because her name is on the cover. Wasted my money this time.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Narrator ruined it for me By Barbara Bank This was not up to the usual standard of Delinsky but a sweet but boring story but the narrator was not suitable in my opinion. The attempt at the male voice was spooky and it was simply not worth a credit.

Quick Fix is the second installment in Linda Grimes's original urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel Halligan.

Ciel Halligan, an aura adaptor with a chameleon-like ability to step into the lives of her clients and fix their problems for them―as them―is working a job at the National Zoo with her boyfriend, Billy, and his ten-year-old sister, Molly. It's supposed to be a quick fix, giving her time to decide if it's wise to pursue the romantic relationship her charming scoundrel of a best friend wants, or if she should give Mark, the CIA spook she's crushed on since hormones first rattled her pubescent brain, a chance to step up to the plate.

Molly has already begun to show signs of being an adaptor herself. She's young for it, but she's always been precocious, so it's not impossible. What is impossible is her taking on the form of the baby orangutan she touches―adaptors can only project human auras. Until now, apparently. Worse, Molly is stuck in ape form. She can't change herself back.

Escaping from the zoo with their new baby orang, Ciel and Billy head for New York City and the only person they know can help: Ciel's brother James, a non-adaptor scientist who's determined to crack the aura adaptor genetic code. But when Billy winds up in jail, accused of attempted murder, Ciel begins to suspect Molly's unusual adapting ability is more than just a fluke. Who's been experimenting on Molly, and what do they hope to gain? And will Ciel survive to find out?

Review

“A fast-paced, sexy romp with characters as original as its intriguing premise!” ―Diana Gabaldon, New York Times bestselling author of Outlander on In a Fix

“In this sparkling series opener, Ciel Halligan is not a shape-shifter, but she does have a genetic quirk that allows her to look like someone else by changing her aura. [A] wisecracking, whirlwind romp of a romantic urban fantasy adventure.” ―Publishers Weekly on In a Fix

“Linda Grimes's fast paced supernatural debut is fresh, fun, and sexy, and heroine Ciel Halligan faces both the outlandish and the deadly with a perfect balance of equanimity, irreverence, and nerve. I can't wait to see where her wild adventures lead her next!” ―Vicki Pettersson, New York Times bestselling author of The Signs of the Zodiac series on In a Fix

By Urban Fantasy Investigations The characters in this series are Fun, Fun, Fun. I could not imagine the greatness of being able to transform myself into different people but Linda does a great job of describing it to us. Ciel and Billy are at the zoo with Molly, Billy's sister when she comes into her adapter 'powers' and turns into an orangutan. As they are escaping a worker thinks they are stealing an animal from the zoo and they have to make a fast get away. Until they can find James and get him to change Molly back they have to not only fool their families so they think everything with Molly is alright but they also keep their eye on an orangutan Molly and figure out who is murdering people and framing Billy. The characters really do make this series. There are a ton of plot twists involved and following the characters is nothing but entertaining. There are some great scenes where we meet more of the family and get to see how they interact with each other in their own element. There are a lot to have to get straight but it was pretty interesting to see them in action. Lets talk romance. I know you are waiting for that. After IN A FIX I was really rooting for Billy and Ciel and they do not disappoint in QUICK FIX. We get some great sexual tension, some yummy sexy scenes as well as some jealous encounters. What more could you ask for. Family reaction is awesome too, especially the scene at the end with their Moms.If you are looking for a bit of a change this series is the one for you. Its light and unique with a great pace and plenty of action to keep you on your toes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Still Fun, But Ciel Seems Just Along For The Ride By E. Nolan Ceile Halligan is an "aura adaptor". They don't like to be called"shape changers", but that's what they are. With direct contact theycan absorb enough of your "aura" to mimic you perfectly, and even withindirect contact they can do it well enough to get by. While it's atalent with obvious uses in the criminal and espionage world, Cieleuses it to set up a business for outsourcing your worst life problems.Don't interview well? No problem, Ciele will ace the interview as youand get you in like Flynn. Have to be in two places at the same time?Ciele will be in one of them.I thought the first Ciel Halligan book, _In A Fix_, was a fun rompand a promising series start, albeit with a few problems (villiansit was hard to take seriously, and a failure to get the most outof her abilities for instance). In that book, we were presentedwith a typical Urban Fantasy love triangle, with Ciele pulled betweenthe straight arrow CIA aura adaptor and her rougish pseudo-cousin,also an adaptor. I liked the way that the love and sex angles werenot treated with life-and-death seriousness, and the mild kinkinessthat the shape changing (with gender bending..) angle added, andin the end approved of Ciele's choice. In this book, Ciel is back home, nursemaiding her young girl cousinwhen a trip to the zoo goes wrong and the young adaptor is unexpectedlystuck as an orangutan. While Ciel and her friends try to fix that, while not letting the girl's mother find out, people start getting shotand Ciel seems to be on the target list..I'd have to say that book two is something of a sophomore slump.I think there are a couple of issues that lead me to feel that way.First, the scope of the book seems very cramped. The first one wasfull of globe-trotting and trans-national (if silly) threats. This onefeels very confined as Ciel stays in New York City for the entire book, andspends a large part of it dealing with, or avoiding dealing with herlarge and beloved but stifling family. This includes being a baby-sitterfor most of the book, which dampens the "frisky adults" vibe of the actionand banter in the first book.Second, the plot is kind of episodic and baffling. We get multipleevents piling up without a sense of an overall logic (there is one,but it is not well conveyed until the end, and even then is notentirely satisfying). There is also a lot of to-and-froing betweendiferent locations and revisitings of actions in progress withlittle change ("He thinks it will work this time." "He's waiting tosee if it works" etc)Finally, I just got the sense that instead of being a cruical actor,Ciel was just kind of along for the ride in this book. Eventshappen to her and instead of shaping them, she depends on othersto rescue her. Indeed, her biggest decision in this book is adisasterous one which takes a child into deadly danger, and is hardto forgive. In the first book I had the sense of Ciele as a competentactor who was understandably chafing under the "protection" of themen in her life. In this book, she needs all that protection andthen some.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Light and big-hearted urban fantasy By Vilia Grimes delivers another hilariously madcap adventure featuring aura adaptor Ciel Halligan. When you've already covered psycho neo-Vikings, where do you go next? To the zoo apparently. Billy (her sorta cousin and romantic interest) and his sister Molly are there to help Ciel get evidence for her new client. Molly loves primates so after they've dealt with that situation, they check out the orangutans. Unfortunately once Molly touches one she changes into a baby orangutan and can't change back. Throw in secret lab experiments, attempted murder, another brother and lots of aura switching, and you have a recipe for fun.Ciel has evolved from the first novel and the overly protective men in her life are starting to respond to her new found maturity by backing off a bit. Molly clearly needs help and Ciel's siblings, Mark and Billy all pitch in to help. I loved Ciel's interactions with her family from the model shoot to the actual shooting. Ciel's caring nature really shines through and half the trouble she gets into is on someone else's behalf. There were a couple of times that I felt like shouting out `Danger Will Robinson' but Ciel is my number one teflon girl as danger never sticks for long.In "In a Fix" Ciel had both Billy and Mark after her. She'd had a crush on Mark for years but he only started showing interest once Billy made his move. I like Billy far more than Mark because he isn't afraid to let his emotions hang out. Despite his reputation as a lovable rogue, he seems to genuinely care for Ciel and respect her abilities. Mark, on the other hand, tries to wrap her in cotton wool and protect her from herself. There is a lot of unresolved sexual tension bubbling away under the surface. There are so many different story threads heading off in different directions that were only really tied together in the last section of the book. A little more structure would have been welcome so the plot could progress steadily rather than advance in chunks. I did appreciate finding out how adaptors gained their abilities and meeting the other siblings though. I really want to know if there are others in this world with special skills apart from the adaptors."Quick Fix" is a little more grounded in reality than "In a Fix" which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is still a really light and big-hearted urban fantasy novel though. I spent a delightful afternoon with Ciel, her family and Billy and I can't wait to see what shenanigans she gets up to next time.

A unique collection of 33 narratives by bereaved students and young adults, this books aims to help young adults who are grieving and provide guidance for those who seek to support them.

Grieving the death of a loved one is difficult at any age, but it can be particularly difficult during college and young adulthood. From developing a sense of identity to living away from family and adjusting to life on and off campus, college students and young adults face a unique set of issues. These issues often make it difficult for young adults to talk about their loss, leading to a sense of isolation, different-ness and a pressure to pretend that everything is OK. The narratives included in this book are honest, engaging and heartfelt, and they help other students and young people know that they are not alone and that there are others who 'get' what they are going through. The narratives are usefully divided by themes, such as isolation, forced maturity and life transition challenges, and include commentary by the authors on grief responses and coping strategies. Each section also ends with helpful questions for reflection.

Inspired by the experiences of Dr. Fajgenbaum losing his mother during college and Dr. Servaty-Seib dedicating her career to college student bereavement, this book will be a lifeline for students and young adults who have lost a loved one. It will also be of immeasurable value to counselors, college administrators, grief professionals and parents.

Their journeys of struggle and healing offer wisdom and hope. -- Donna L. Schuurman, EdD, FT, Chief Executive Officer, The Dougy Center for Grieving Children & Families This book is important. It brings to life in clear, plain English stories of young adults who have coped with the death(s) of persons they love. Heather and David get it. They understand what coping with loss entails for a college student. They make the myriad experiences of young adults dealing with bereavement come alive for all of us. The stories told by grieving young adults illustrate clearly several important themes that scholars have uncovered about bereavement. Heather and David's mastery of what they know will help others to get what the bereaved college student knows. -- David E. Balk, Professor and Chair, Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and author, Helping the Bereaved College Student I see We Get It as a much needed tool for those who work with college students on a daily basis. College student personnel such as clinicians, residential life staff, Dean of Student staff, and faculty and administrators could truly benefit from reading about the themes noted-and even more powerfully from the students' stories. The range of student experience covered through the first-person and beautifully honest narratives allows for a deeper level of understanding and perspective-taking, providing a unique insight into how best to support grieving students. -- Philip M. Meilman, Ph.D., Director, Counseling and Psychiatric Service, and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Georgetown University

Having lost my dad at a young age, I would have felt less alone if someone had sent this book my way. Truly a great cathartic read for anyone who has experienced loss at a younger age, an experience no one should go through, but that many people do suffer. This book breaks it down into readable chapters by individual authors, with personalized stories and pictures.

I discovered Anthony Ryan when I read Blood Song the first book in his Raven Shadow series (that novel is his best to date, far better that the other two in the trilogy). I found that he had three short novellas available for free in his website and downloaded them immediately (I think they are no longer free, but on the plus side they have been re-edited and are now easier to read). I was surprised. Blood Song is a fantasy set in a medieval type of reality, while the Slab is sci-fi, and while the former took a narrator and a long book to tell the story of Vaelin Al Sorna and describe his world, Alex narrated in the first person and managed to describe a really interesting future for Earthlings in three (very) concise and engaging detective-novels. It takes a really good author to be so versatile. As I said, the Blood Song second and third novels were good, but just couldn't deliver on the promise of quality set by the first volume. That is not the case with the Slab saga, and An Aria for Ragnarok not only tells a really good story that ties and closes most previous story-lines, but provides the required background to understand the environment.

Space opera meets hard boiled noir By Barry Melius Alex McLeod, war veteran and homicide cop, goes after an old army buddy trailing a line of innocent and not so victims. Lean writing and good story telling finish off the fifth and last in the Slab City Blues series. A memorable series from a writer worthy of the name. Recommended.

Really cool idea. My only gripe is I want more of this world and story but sadly this is the last one to be published.

I just felt like WTH!! I did enjoy the story in the first one just wanted it to actually end. We are left to decide on our own who is actually behind it all. The second one has Zach in some of it but nothing on Katie or about finalizing the first book so I can't say I enjoyed this combo. The second book was okay but I really didn't get her outrage when they never defined their relationship in the first place. I think these could've been great stories but the author just didn't take it there.

I read an advance copy last year. This is a great story that I would liken to "Lord of the Rings" or "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". Great characters, very creative and engaging writing style. Teenagers through adults will love this! What a great gift to get started in this 4 book series. This is fantasy writing at its best! I need to find out more about the characters and life in the King's palace. Once I finished, I had a sense of disappointment, only because I had to wait to read more. I can't wait to see how this story unfolds in the next books.

GGplot2 Explained Well By Graham Webster Books published by Packt Publishing are a mixed bag in terms of quality; however this book on ggplot2 is pretty good. I have purchased a few books on ggplot2, and I consider it the best introduction available for a user who is familiar with R. The book has a clearly written and logical approach to the subject, and has a good balance between theory and practice. I think I now have a reasonable understanding of how the "grammar of graphics" works, and can understand the logic of the program. Other books tend to adopt a cookbook approach (and Winston Chang's R Graphics Cookbook is a good example of that ). A graphics program that is based on a grammatical approach deserves to be explained in a way that allows the reader to build on their knowledge in a systematic way and to be able to extend the given examples to other situations. I'll go back to Hadley's book on ggplot2 ; I might understand it better now !

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Appealing By Dimitri Shvorob I am going to be less diplomatic than Graham Webster and say that 90% of Packt output is garbage - and I keep checking out their titles purely for the other 10%. "ggplot2 Essentials" is among those positive surprises. OK, it is not a five-star book. First, specific editorial choices have made presentation less effective, and wasted space, reducing "core" page count to 100+. (To mention a specific peeve - the geom list on pages 97-101 was a disappointment: I would have liked illustrations, not simply a list). Second - and this is not the author's fault - Packt's standard no-frills black-and-white looks are a material problem for a book about a graphics package; the visually appealing books by Wickham and Chang surely "sell" "ggplot2" better. On the other hand, I see a competently written, substantial, non-copycat book which absolutely delivers the "ggplot2 essentials" it has promised in the title, and makes an effort to explain that advertised "grammar of graphics". Agreeing with Graham Webster again, the latter element was lacking in Winston Chang's otherwise proficiently crafted book. Still, Chang's has other strengths. My recommendation to a "ggplot2" novice would be the "Chang's plus Teutonico's" combo.PS. If you see any odd things in "Comments", that's probably the psycho who has spent days posting offensive comments to my reviews - only for them to be deleted by Amazon - after I criticized an iffy Packt book promoted with fake five-star reviews. ("R Machine Learning By Example" by Bali and Sarkar, if you are wondering). As long as you know that his "Dimitri Shvorob" is fake, there isn't much harm he can do.

Excerpt from Esperanto (the Universal Language): The Student's Complete Text Book; Containing Full Grammar, Exercises, Conversations, Commercial Letters, and Two VocabulariesThis revised edition of my Grammar of the Auxiliary International Language, "Esperanto" - the first published for English readers - has had the great advantage of the personal supervision and official approval of the founder, Dr. Zamenhof. That it has been prepared to supply a want is not a mere façon de parler. Prior to the appearance of the first edition hundreds of inquirers, from most widely separated sections at home and abroad had written urgently requesting a grammar suitable for English students. These inquirers, for the most part, came to know of the existence of "Esperanto" through the medium of pamphlets, leaflets, letters in the public Press, etc., which could give, of necessity, only the merest idea and outline of the language. In compiling a book to meet this demand my chief desire and aim has been to prepare a Grammar, which, while being complete in all its parts and containing everything that is necessary for a sound knowledge of the language, should be brief, clear, full, but not redundant.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Backstory, Motivation and Conflict: An easy to understand, plain-English guide to the transformational character arc and story mechanics (Plain-English Writing Guides Book 2), by Jodi Henley

From the Author Backstory, Motivation and Conflict is a hands-on continuation of the material in Practical Emotional Structure. Kim, Rambo and Mercedes are back, and Jodi would like to suggest it's easier to understand interlocking concepts when the characters are familiar.

About the Author Jodi is a developmental editor based in the Greater Seattle Metro area. A huge fan of character-driven stories, Jodi is always trying to figure out how things work. A Myer-Briggs INTJ, Jodi loves people watching (okay, people "dissecting") and has a distressing habit of telling people about their real life character arcs while on the lookout for pertinent backstory.

Character Arc Without Backstory falls Flat - Henley's Book is Top Notch By Melissa Sugar-Gold Another Successful Writer's How to craft book by Henley. Writers/Authors never outgrow the need for refreshment courses or books and Henley is one of those authors who know just what to offer and how to present it in a manner so it's never redundant. Her presentation is always refreshing. Her examples are simplistic enough for beginners, but her work is geared more to the advanced author. She has the rare ability to teach both the novice and the seasoned author. I highly recommend her books to all authors. She is on my go to list of resources of authors, websites, gurus, writing instructors, etc. that I turn to when I run into a problem when writing my novel. She has mastered the art of weaving backstory into the novel at just the right moment and with just the exact amount of increments so the character's motivation is revealed throughout the story and never just unloaded. Her mastery of the subject allows the character's motivation to become clear at the opportune time so the character's fatal flaw and the underlying wound that caused it intensifies the conflict of the story. This is one book you don't want to miss. Not if you want to get your character's arc right and maximize your character's transformation.Read my review of Books & Sites I turn to Here: [...]Melissa Sugar @Like A Graduate-Level Class in Story-Crafting By Amazon Customer This is exactly the writing craft book I've been looking for. Even though I've moved past the beginner level craft books on story, sometimes you still get stuck with writers' block. Also, sometimes I have a great beginning with a saggy middle. This is the solution to both of those problems. This is one of those books I would get both in ebook AND paper copy if it was available.
