The Turin Shroud is the most important and studied relic in the world. Many papers on it have recently appeared in important scientific journals. Scientific studies on the relic until today fail to provide conclusive answers about the identity of the enveloped man and the dynamics regarding the image formation impressed therein. This book not only addresses these issues in a scientific and objective manner but also leads the reader through new search paths. It summarizes the results in a simple manner for the reader to comprehend easily. Many books on the theme have been already published, but none of them contains such a quantity of scientific news and reports. The most important of them is the following: the result of the 1988 radiocarbon dating is statistically wrong and other three new dating methods demonstrate that the Shroud has an age compatible with the epoch in which Jesus Christ lived in Palestine. A numismatic analysis performed on Byzantine gold coins confirms this result. This book is, therefore, very important with respect to the Turin Shroud. It is unique in its genre and a very useful tool for those who want to study the subject deeply.

Review

"This is one of the books John [Jackson] may have had in mind for publication after hundreds of man-years of collective research even two thousand years after the death of Jesus. It is unique in the depth of material covered that supports dating the Shroud progressively back to the first century. It is an outstanding contribution to Shroud studies." ― Robert W. Siefker, The Turin Shroud Center of Colorado, USA

"Prof. Fanti’s new book is a major new work in the field of literature on the Shroud. It is of great value as it provides the details and results of very interesting new research for which Fanti has been responsible. It is an essential addition to any library or collection of written work on the Shroud of Turin."― Mark Oxley, author of The Challenge of the Shroud

"After decades of dedicated research, Dr. Fanti and his colleagues have developed a new scientific method to date ancient linen, whose result is consistent with the extensive scientific and medical evidence derived from the unique Shroud of Turin. Fanti’s result is also completely different from the Shroud’s medieval C-14 dating, constituting the first direct scientific challenge to the dating of this famous cloth."― Mark Antonacci, author of The Resurrection of the Shroud, Test The Shroud Foundation

"The chapter on numismatic investigation is very interesting because it gives a very clear indication that the Shroud existed before the period between 1260 and 1390 AD, established by the radiocarbon dating tests. The book is highly recommended."― Petrus Soons, Shroud Researcher from Panama

"Fanti, for first time, experimentally proves that the threads of the Shroud can be 2000 years old. This book is a good opportunity to be updated on the knowledge of the Holy Shroud."― Cèsar Barta, Centro Español de Sindonologia, Spain

About the Author

Giulio Fanti is associate professor of mechanical and thermal measurements at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padua, Italy. After gaining experience in spatial structures, and also in tethered satellites and image analysis, he has directed since 1997 his interest to the Shroud to fill some gaps, especially with reference to the body image impressed in it, which is still scientifically inexplicable. He was responsible for a university research project concerning the most important relic of Christianity and has headed for more than 10 years the Shroud Science Group, a group of about 140 scientists dedicated to study of the relic. He has published more than 170 scientific works in international journals. He has authored 8 books and more than 50 scientific works on the Shroud.

Pierandrea Malfi holds a master’s degree with honors in mechanical engineering from the University of Padua. His thesis was based on the mechanical dating of textile fibers, whose results have also been published in scientific journals. He has set up and computerized the Antonio Maria Traversi Physics Museum of Marco Foscarini High School in Venice, Italy, of which he has been scientific curator for more than 10 years.

Moran Fanti has brought together into one place an excellent resource for those interested in learning about the Shroud of Turin. Not for nothing is the Shroud of Turin the most studied and scrutinized physical object on the planet in all of science. Increasingly, it is being demonstrated that the most advanced techniques available in the 21st century fail to emulate the measurable qualities and quantities characteristic of this relic. If you do not already have the information in this book from a wide range of scholars and analyses, then your savvy about it leaves something to be desired. Read it. Buy it. It's well worth the price of admission.

Race Hey Everyone!let me tell ya! if you wanna pass the ASVAB with a high score...this would be the text book to do it with!simple easy read as well as enjoyable! I took the asvab the first time and got a 35...and then I got this book and got a 70! =D i was super happy!I bought the Kaplan book first but, second time i took the test i thought i would change text book, and then i studied the dummies bookand enjoyed it as well as really understand what the question is saying and wanting...i prefer the asvab for dummies vs. the Kaplan! its easy to finish this book and i feel like you gain much more knowledge and enthusiasm about the test, because of simple and easy it was it did boost my confidence a lot for the test, and that in turn help my attitude towards the test.so good luck to you all! Air Force here i COME!

I am not a American native, and I did not finish high school in America, so I had to start studying the terms and subjects of American high schools in my new acquired language, english (I graduated high school in 2011). Since I failed the test once, the AFQT to be exact. I understood the equations on all the math problems but not the questions, not to a hundred percent that it. So I decided to give this book a chance, and surprisingly, in only a few pages, I re-learned, or better said, it took my mind to the past, and made me remember all that math stuff I had forgotten. Of course, it became a great study guide for the other subjects of the ASVAB and the AFQT. Now I feel more than ready to take the military exam.I will update after I actually take it, to let you know about the improvements.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By John H. Spruhan Unfortunately, I must agree with the other reviewer that gave this book only two stars. There are other books that cover each of these series in a more comprehensive manner: David Lange on Mercury Dimes, J.H. Cline on Standing Liberty Quarters, and Bruce Fox on Walking Liberty Halves. These authors are referred to in some of the text. I also found the history part on each year extremely superficial. For example, for 1938, he doesn't even mention Hitler's takeover of Austria, and the Munich Agreement! I expect more from the author, as has been the case for most of the titles in the Official Red Book Series, with the new volume on Half Cents and Large Cents being a good example. The only thing that I found helpful was his advice not to go by a certified grade only, if the coin does not have eye appeal. Also, split bans for the dimes and full heads for the quarters should not be the only consideration. A nice MS-63 or MS-64 example without the above details, but with a good strike and eye appeal, may be a better and cheaper choice. Sometimes deferring to a better book already published, but not by Whitman, is a better choice if there is no specialist for the series available who will write a truly comprehensive treatment. Also, I personally cannot afford these coins in mint state, so the advice needs to be aimed toward affordability as well as quality. This is a problem in all of Bowers books, which implies you should forget coin collecting if you have modest means.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding reference By JJ Writer Detailed, perhaps overly detailed, account of three popular series of United States coins. Three new coin designs debuted in 1916: the Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, Walking Liberty half dollar. These are three of the most attractive designs used on US coins and continue to be popular with collectors. Author Bowers does not just tell of the coins and produce statistics, he gives an overview of what life was like during the time the coins were minted. This area was a bit overdone in this particular book, taking up almost 50 pages in a 300 page book. The coin info is outstanding, making this a reference for many years and not just the current year.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very useful book (but manage your expectations!) By Passionate Hobbyist In reading reviews for this book, I think one should keep in mind that a) it covers three series, b) in 300 pages. No, it is not as comprehensive as the individual volumes on the series by different authors. That would make the book massive!Instead, it's a usable book that's handy for taking to a coin show with information on grading, history, collecting, populations and prices. As Dennis Tucker writes in the preface, "If a Grandpa of a certain age had a cigar box or candy dish that he tossed his pocket change into, chances are good it held a few of these silver pieces." This is a great book from which one can begin collecting these three series.

Good. Then, one day, you find that one of your beloved masters, Lea Verou, wrote a book with some css secrets. And you think: "Cool. Secrets from her! I may find a thing or two to learn".And you buy. And you read. And your brain explodes, because you have just found out that you actually knew almost nothing about CSS.Lea Verou not only know the paths to solve problems with CSS, but she knows the WHYs behind each solution. And that's a HUGE difference.I hope that the world will see more books from Lea Verou very soon.Cheers to a true CSS bender.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A must-read for web designers and developers By Adrian H. Absolutely fantastic. A must-read for web designers and front-end developers. It's packed with actionable ideas and techniques, many of which I'd never seen before. (Context: I've been a web developer since 1999ish, co-created the Django web framework and have been wrestling with CSS for 15 years or so.)Each chapter presents a specific web design "problem," along with a CSS solution (and sometimes multiple solutions). Some are simple, others are quite complex. Many are quite clever and will make you think of CSS differently. It's well-written and beautifully designed, with full-color pages and tons of informative footnotes. The best part is that Lea talks through her thought process in developing each technique, "teaching a man to fish." In that sense, this book is great on two levels: it'll teach you specific techniques, and it'll teach you how to think when developing your *own* techniques for future web design problems.

The people who call themselves writers but don't write a complete story are the worst kind of thieves. They steal your time by not telling you they didn't right a complete story. They steal your money if continue to buy their dribble. It could have been a good story please Ms Jordan just complete the book then write another.

First her jerk of a boss trashes her presentation, then this infuriatingly good looking guy is nice to her on the street, then it turns out he is her companies next big client. She shouldn't want him, but immediately she just cannot say no to him. She wants him cause...I don't know. He is good looking and just has this hold over her. Ugh. Really she comes off as this weak, naive girl who I just didn't care about at all. And Brandon? Well he is all alpha male dominant and wants a submissive. Sure, I like that, but not the way this was written. I just kept thinking what am I reading? Is this like a 50 Shades wannabe? I have never read 50 Shades so I cannot say, but this seems to be like what people say it is. I don't know. These two quickly jump to sexy time with Brandon immediately wanting to dominate her. He will own her. My real problem is at first she keeps saying no, but yes at the same time so it was like wait - are you okay with this? You are not being very clear right now. Because if you are not okay with this then this is not cool...So you are not okay with what is happening, but you want to continue? I am confused. You keep saying no, but you want to go on so really that is a yes? It annoyed me to no end as no shouldn't mean yes (unless it is talked about before hand and you have a safe word). Eventually he does give her a safe word and then it is better. Then it is not so confusing and frustrating for me.Also something that I just thought was odd was Hannah refers to her naval as where her sexual tension is.Every time it made me stop and be like really? I don't know about you, but my navel is not where I feel sexy time feelings. Every time it just made me squint like what? It just sounds odd to me. Really this is just a quick read, one part of a story, and is pretty much just sexy times. It did not work for me.This review was originally posted to Jen in Bookland

Oh, but don't worry, it's still got the typos, bland-unrealistic dialogue, 2 dimensional characters and poor sentence structure as it's "predecessor". God, I thought we were all better than this, I'm done reading any free erotic/romance short stories from Amazon or any other retailers. Awful.

Megan Frampton's Dukes Behaving Badly series is back, though this time it's an earl who's meeting his match in a delightfully fun and sexy novella!

What's a lovely young woman doing asleep in his bed? Matthew, Earl of Selkirk, is shocked to discover it's his new housekeeper! She's a far cry from the gray-haired woman he expected. Matthew is no fan of surprises, and Annabelle Tyne is pure temptation. Perhaps he shouldn't have had her hired sight unseen.

Annabelle, co-owner of the Quality Employment Agency, is no housekeeper, but she wasn't about to lose a potential client simply because there was no one to fit the bill. Imagine her shock when the earl arrives at his London townhome and she's awoken in the night by the most attractive man she's ever seen.

Matthew is a man who lives life by the rules, but sometimes rules are made to be broken … and being bad can be very, very good.

When Good Earls Go Bad: A Victorian Valentine's Day Novella (Dukes Behaving Badly), by Megan Frampton

Review “Megan Frampton always shines!” (Sabrina Jeffries, New York Times bestselling author)“Frampton’s romance has charm to spare, and readers will find it impossible to resist her flawless characterization, fanciful plotting, and deliciously fizzy wit.” (Booklist)“Frampton superbly balances passion with humor, avoiding cliché through rich characterization. The result is warm, kindhearted, and utterly delightful.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“exquisitely written, fast-paced, and -- I would not dare call them sex scenes -- the lovemaking is sublimely erotic, sensual, and deliciously wicked. Megan Frampton was a new author to me, and with WHEN EARLS GO BAD, she has gained a new devoted fan. A must- read for historical fiction lovers!” (Fresh Fiction)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. when good earls go bad By Amazon Customer I loved this book! It was humorous and such a feel good story ! One of my favorites I know I will read this one over and over. I really liked how the roles were reversed in this story with her being experienced and him being a virgin. I love all of megan framptons books! I would buy any book she writes and know that I am getting a good story. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes romance of any genre.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. When Good Earls Go Bad By Angie Elle Thank you to AVON and Edelweiss for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.3.5 starsWhen Good Earls Go Bad is the story of Annabelle and Matthew, a ‘fallen’ woman and the Scottish Earl who goes against the logic he lives by and falls in love with her. This was a sweet little novella. Annabelle, one of three owners of an employment agency, is caught between a rock and a hard place when a man comes in demanding a housekeeper for an Earl who will be arriving in town immediately. While there’s no one available to fill the position, Annabelle knows how good it would look for her business to serve an Earl, so she takes on the job herself.I really enjoyed Annabelle’s character. She was a busy bee kind of person, always needing something to do. An endless stream chatter filled her mind, and while it drove me a bit nuts at first, her character quickly grew on me. She was so friendly and candid. Matthew, the Scottish Earl, kept me laughing. He was very logical and literal, and there was something about that that made him so charming. He wasn’t your typical hero—smooth was definitely not a word that fit him, but he was determined to win his heroine! It was nice to see characters falling in love because of something they had in common. Annabelle and Matthew both loved to read and were very level-headed, and they enjoyed spending time talking with each other. And while their attraction happened quickly, it wasn’t without their characters thinking things through. The love scenes in this book are best described as tender. It was nice to read about a man from this time period who hasn’t left a string of lovers behind, but is right there with the heroine in discovering how to please his lover. And interestingly enough, this book covered contraception, which you don’t read much about in Victorian or Regency books. It didn’t feel out of place. I thought it was fitting for Annabelle. Her unending curiosity would have caused her to stumble upon the subject at some point. The plot of this book was similar to the first one in the series, but I enjoyed it regardless. The characters were different enough to give this story a new feel to it. One of the things I really enjoy about this author is that she manages to keep the drama to a minimum while still engaging the reader with her plots. These are characters going about their everyday lives who just happen to find love.Overall, When Good Earls Go Bad was a sweet, romantic story that kept me wanting more until the very end. I can’t wait for the next one in this series! This review was originally posted at Badass Book Reviews.

It's not as big of a commitment as a full length book and often times the story is equally satisfying. As an added bonus, novellas are short so I can read them in a single sitting. This novella was such a nice little story that kept me entertained for part of an afternoon.Annabelle is quite the character. She says exactly what she is thinking. When an Earl needs a housekeeper for only month, she takes the position because there are no housekeepers available at her employment agency. She meets her new employer in a most interesting manner shortly after starting the position.Matthew lives life by the rules. He does what he is supposed to do and has his life planned out. He comes to London for the period of one month to help his uncle make an important business decision. Matthew doesn't seem bothered at all by Annabelle's chatter or her inability to cook. He soon wants all of Annabelle's attention. This was a nice little story that was sometimes a bit silly. I didn't mind the silly but it did seem like the story tried a little to hard to be funny at times. I liked Annabelle and Matthew as a couple. I have read so many stories about Earls that are the center of attention so it was really nice to read about one that was more down to earth and studious. The scene where they meet for the first time was a lot of fun and I loved the fact that they were both equally affected. It was also very refreshing to have a female lead character who actually says what she wants.I would definitely recommend this novella to fans of historical romance. This is the first opportunity that I have had to read Megan Frampton's writing but I plan to watch for other stories in the future.I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Impulse via Edelweiss for the purpose of providing an honest review.

In 1997 Wayne Dale Matthysse, a former Marine Corps medic who served in Vietnam, returned to South East Asia offer his service . With Vandin San, a brilliant young Cambodian aid worker, he transformed Wat Opot, a haunted scrubland behind a ruined temple, into a place of healing and respite. Here children with or orphaned by HIV/AIDS—the first generation of children to grow up with AIDS—could find a new family, and live outside of fear or judgment. Disarming, funny, deeply moving, In a Rocket Made of Ice gathers the hopeful stories of children saved and changed by this very special place; the story of a war veteran’s redemption; and the story of the author’s transformation in her contact with the powerful life force of Wat Opot.

In a Rocket Made of Ice: The Story of Wat Opot, a Visionary Community for Children Growing Up with AIDS, by Gail Gutradt

Review “A wrenching memoir of the time Gutradt spent volunteering at Wat Opot, a residence for Cambodian children and teens living with HIV and AIDS.” —Sarah Meyer, O, The Oprah Magazine “A testament to the thriving life in Wat Opot can be found in Gutradt’s powerful book. With patience, compassion, and an eye for the poetic, Gutradt’s memoir of her time as a volunteer at Wat Opot beautifully captures the heart behind the heavy circumstances that bring the community’s residents together.” —Joe Muscolino, Everyday eBook“This might have been one of the saddest stories ever told. Instead, it is an interesting and often uplifting one [that] also offers universal lessons in compassion. The book is based on the personal journal of Gutradt, an American who has worked over the years as a volunteer at a tiny orphanage in rural Cambodia. . . . Much of In a Rocket Made of Ice is devoted to sketches of the many children the author has met and grown to love, the stories enhanced by photos taken by the author. . . . Gutradt writes sensitively, sometimes lyrically. . . . As director of the community, Wayne Matthysse is a constant presence that binds together both Wat Opot and Gutradt’s narrative. He is a complicated man [who] considers his work atonement for the deaths of two children he witnessed [while he was] in the Vietnam War. He has a highly individualistic moral sense. . . . In a Rocket Made of Ice concludes on an up-note, with stories of children who are now in their teens or early 20s. Wayne is helping them obtain educations, find jobs and learn to live ‘on the outside,’ separate from their Wat Opot family. Compared with the early days of the orphanage, these are welcome challenges. Some people need to travel far from home to find their calling—Gutradt appears to be one of them.” —Melanie Kirkpatrick, The Wall Street Journal “Affecting and deeply felt. . . . Part journalism, part memoir, In a Rocket Made of Ice is Gutradt’s story of her four stays at Wat Opot from 2005 to 2012, and the empathy, selflessness, humor and willpower she was met with at every turn. Where once Wat Opot’s purpose was to see HIV+ children and adults through to their inevitable deaths, the compound has since hummed to life. . . . Despite the tragic circumstances that bring people to Wat Opot, the community roars with positivity and laughter.” —Joe Muscolino, Biographile  “An extraordinary book about an extraordinary place. . . . Gutradt, a Maine native who has spent several stints volunteering at Wat Opot, paints an achingly beautiful portrait of [Wat Opot], which may not have many material resources, but is imbued with a much-needed sense of family for children who have been orphaned by AIDS. . . . The ultimate goal of Wat Opot is not just to get kids healthy, but to instill in them a belief that they can live and thrive among other Cambodians, where the stigma of HIV and AIDS lingers. Many of the children go on to university, a testament to the powerful work being done on a shoestring and a prayer. Gutradt has given us an inspiring, unforgettable book.” —Amy Scribner, BookPage “Neither sentimental nor solicitous, Gutradt’s memoir of her work in a small Cambodian community is a compassionate window into both their lives and hers.” —Bruce Jacobs, Shelf Awareness “Gutradt takes readers into the Cambodian community of Wat Opot, where children who suffer from HIV or have lost their parents to the virus are cared for by a dedicated group of volunteers. Led by charismatic Vietnam veteran Wayne Matthysse, Wat Opot is recognized by UNICEF and other international agencies for the work it does on this most human of scales: by making sure otherwise overlooked children are fed, clothed, educated, and loved. Gutradt is clearly enamored with the work done here, and her deep affection and admiration for Matthysse are obvious. . . . The good work being done at Wat Opot is admirable and to be emulated, and Gutradt writes effectively about how she’s been transformed by her association with this important place and the many delightful children who live there.” —Colleen Mondor, Booklist“Moving, insightful. . . . The story of a tiny community in Cambodia where children whose lives have been shattered by AIDS are cared for, educated and raised to live full lives in the outside world. . . . Gutradt first volunteered in Wat Opot in 2005 and returned there multiple times. . . . Her many photographs of the youngsters are appealing; her warm stories generally avoid sentimentality: the needy children are not angels, and as they grow, they sometimes present truly tough problems for those concerned about their welfares and futures. Gutradt also discusses the problems created by unreliable government agencies and well-intentioned but uninformed do-gooders. A refreshing account of generous people devoting their time and energy to doing something right.” —Kirkus “Wat Opot is a community that not only saves the lives of its residents but enriches our lives through its lessons in generosity, empathy, and resilience. Before I read Gail Gutradt’s moving account, I had never heard of it. Now I will never forget it.” —Anne Fadiman, author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down   “It’s hard not to fall in love with the author, the subjects, and the message of this beautiful book of stories and photographs. The warmth, the thoughtfulness, the writerly craft Gail Gutradt brings to an orphanage in Cambodia—and the stories and people she finds there—teach us not only about wisdom and compassion, but also about how to give our lives meaning, right now. Read it, and act on the heart-lifting vision of a universal humanity it brings so movingly home to us.” —Pico Iyer  “This is an inspiring, first-hand account of personal sacrifice to help dying children, an insight into courage, and a vivid portrait of life in rural Cambodia.” —Alan Lightman, author of Einstein’s Dreams “Much more than a story of hope in the face of grim news and chronic disappointment, Gutradt makes a compelling case for the efficacy of ingenuity, imagination, and a commitment to human dignity in accompanying each other through adversity.” —Dr. Paul Farmer

She raises the volume as high as it will go, way past the point of distortion, then twists the dial back and forth searching for something that pleases her: the trailing melodies of Buddhist mantras, a marching band playing the national anthem of the Kingdom of Cambodia, karaoke tunes, monks chanting, more mantras, marching, karaoke, monks and on and on and back again.I open my eyes. It is still dark outside, and only the dim differentiation of wall from ceiling, sky from wall, barely perceptible through the pink mosquito net, shows where my single window looks out onto the world. In the distance a rooster crows weakly, sounding cross. Is it too early for him as well?A wandering many-voiced chant arises from the Buddhist temple next door, the morning prayers of young and aged monks. One dog barks. From across the way another answers.Sita is playing a Western song now with lyrics in Khmer. Her cheap speakers crackle under the strain.A gecko begins chirping on the stucco wall.On the porch outside my room Wayne is still a snoring mountain. His mosquito net is tucked into the black fleece blanket on his bed. Wayne says he sleeps outdoors so he can hear the children when they cry, and manages to sleep, often uneasily, through noises less urgent.Somewhere in the children’s quarters a baby cries out from a dream and is comforted. Wayne rolls over and draws his body upright, dangling his feet over the side of the bed. He wears yesterday’s black trousers, dried mud still on the cuffs from working in the garden. The crying has stopped now so he sits quietly, wrapped in his blanket, collecting his thoughts for the day, breathing himself awake, perhaps praying. A pair of small feet drop over the other side of the bed and stumble off toward the bathrooms behind our house. Mister Phirun, at nine years old the oldest boy with AIDS, sometimes wets the bed. None of the boys wants to sleep with Phirun, so Wayne lets him crawl in with him sometimes when he is worried or lonely. Wayne wakes up often during the night and he will carry Phirun out to the yard, hold him at arm’s length to drain and return him to bed without waking him.Wayne calls all the kids Mister or Miss, especially the very little ones who run around with no pants. It is a matter of respect for the children but also on occasion affords much-needed comic relief, as in “Mister Vantha! Where are your shorts?”The children begin to wander in from their various sleeping quarters, gathering near the bathrooms outside my window. They are still half asleep, most of them, and sit in dazed solitary silence on the bamboo slat bed next to the wall in the manner of small children softly awoken, holding their toothbrushes and soap and waiting their turn in the bathroom. Their towels are draped about their shoulders or dangling unconsciously from their hands. Now and then a little one nods off to sleep as he waits, and his towel drops to the ground and he draws his bare shoulders in and up against the morning dampness and hugs himself and looks even smaller than before. Now Sita squats by the faucet outside her woven mat house and draws a little water to wash herself. She wears a worn flowered sarong hastily tucked in above her breasts, and her hair tumbles uncombed about her neck and shoulders. In spite of the radio, in spite of the insects and the chirping gecko and the whispers of children, in spite of dogs and roosters and monks chanting, the air has until this moment still possessed the integrity of night. But when Sita opens the tap her simple gesture signals the onset of the day’s activities, because somewhere else Mr. Sary has opened the valve that allows water to flow down from the holding tanks on the roof and the water hits Sita’s plastic bucket with a noise like a string of small firecrackers. In the bathroom next door I hear the cistern beginning to fill and the children splashing about, giggling and whispering, washing themselves modestly under their clothes.Sita has lived here, on and off, for six years, her residency interrupted by a series of transgressions, petty thefts and infractions that have made her at times unpopular with her fellow residents and unwelcome in the community. Each time she has left and failed to make a life for herself in the outside world Sita has returned, tentatively at first, testing the boundaries, subtly insinuating herself, promising that she has mended her ways, until finally Wayne’s resolution fails and he persuades the other women to allow Sita to move her few belongings back into her small house. As with nearly everyone here, her life has been a series of the setbacks and rejections, catastrophes and abandonments, that beset people infected with HIV/AIDS the world over. Such stories abound, every imaginable permutation of sorrow and many that are unimaginable. Sita’s own story includes elements not uncommon: an abusive father, a lover who impregnated her and infected her with the HIV virus, then the death of her baby and beatings from her family and, when her illness became public knowledge, a village that tormented her and made of her a pariah. Perhaps like many poor women she has sometimes been forced into prostitution, at least informally, to feed herself. Wayne considers these things when he advocates for her in the community, and the others relent because, after all, Sita’s life has not been so different from their own.The daylight has begun to come up now and Sita emerges from her house, dressed for the day, and begins sweeping the pounded dirt courtyard, bent over her short broom. Her dusty sarong has been properly tied, falling in a modest pleat from her waist. She wears a black blouse with panels of openwork lace, a garment that hints of the dressier ensemble it may have been part of before being sold as surplus from the sweatshops of Phnom Penh. Her high cheekbones, full mouth and high forehead give her a face that might be called sculpted rather than pretty, with a trace of knowing irony in her eyebrows. Yet I have seen her transform, and once, when she was clearly smitten by a young volunteer, she became girlish: radiant and unguarded and wonderfully soft. I could see then the beauty Sita had been and the wife and mother she might have been and the passionate woman she can be.She moves aside a grass mat barrier to reveal a small space adjoining her house. It is no more than eight feet on a side and forms a tiny walled garden on one side of which Sita has planted pink, orange and red zinnias. Once the garden was open, but the bony cows that are allowed to graze freely in the dry season, topping Wayne’s young mango trees and eating whatever else they can find, made a meal of Sita’s flowers. So she has enclosed it, a hidden jewel, radiant in a dusty world. It is her refuge, her pride and her testament, like her radio that blares forth its witness every morning to the world and declares before Heaven, “Yes. I am still here. Listen! I am alive!”

A heartwarming book about a challenging subject By KmVictorian Can anything good come out of an AIDS epidemic?Cambodia, like many other Third World countries, experienced an HIV/AIDS epidemic starting in the 1980s. "In a Rocket Made of Ice: Among the Children of Wat Opot," plays out against that tragic background.Cambodian families and communities were devastated by the new disease. A father might become infected by HIV and bring the infection home to his wife. Children born into this family might also be infected. In the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when available attempts at treatment failed, both parents probably sooner or later died. Sometimes only a frail grandparent--or no one at all--might be left to care for the surviving children. Other people in the community often avoided or were actively hostile to the survivors for fear of catching the frightening new disease.Helping to fill the need for care and support of HIV/AIDS survivors in Cambodia is Wat Opot, a charitable, inter-faith agency whose children are the subject of this book. Author Gail Gutradt, an American, has been a volunteer at Wat Opot over five years. She writes with warmth and great empathy about the children, their joys and their sorrows, and also about the staff, caregivers and volunteers who pour out their lives in loving service to the surviving youngsters. This book is both inspirational and informative.

Wat Opot is brought to life here, and I hope the book will inspire many to help with its mission By Suzanne Amara Wat Opot is a community in Cambodia serving people affected by AIDS, mainly children orphaned by the disease, some with AIDS themselves. It is run by Wayne Matthysee, an ex-Marine who has devoted his life to helping others. This book is written by Gail Gutradt, who has volunteered at Wat Opot for a total of about 13 months over the years, coming and going.I was very touched by the stories in this book, especially those of the children of Wat Opot. They are stories of amazing abilities to rebound, of extreme dedication to siblings, of great happiness and sadness. I liked very much that Gutradt didn't try to portray the children as perfect. I was struck by one story where older girls treat a younger one meanly, and Gutradt reflects it reminds her of middle school cruelty in the 1950s growing up. This realism makes the stories of kindness and sacrifice stronger and more meaningful.Wayne, however, comes across as basically a saint. I know there are people like that, and I believe he probably is a wonderful man, but this read as him being almost too perfect to believe. I was also not as interested in the part of the book that talked about the author's experiences in India, or the few times the book strayed in mystical or supernatural ground, like photographs that showed "orbs" as maybe spirits. As often with a book like this, I hesitate to say anything negative, because I so much want this to be read and for people with the means to do so to donate to Wat Opot. It's horrible to think that the worldwide recession could put AIDS patients back to the time before new drugs. It's sad to think of children at Wat Opot possibly not graduating from school because of the money needed for bribes to teachers for good grades or passing tests. I found myself rooting for the children here, and very much wanting them to have everything and anything they need, and I thank Gutradt for her writing, that will hopefully help those children grow to their potential

Add to the list of war, dictators, Agent Orange, etc. is the AIDS epidemic. The virus spread like wildfire and unknowing culprits brought the sickness home to their families to infect wives and new born babies. Villages shunned sick people and many children were/are left homeless without a means for survival. Wayne Matthysse saw a critical need and with only $50 in his pocket, built Wat Opot from scratch using old temples and grounds and revamping them with the help of volunteers-this new place-and critically needed place became a haven for women and children with the virus.A Rocket Made of Ice is the inspiring and harrowing story of the children of Wat Opat told by a reporter/volunteer who continues to help at the clinic. This is not only a story of the clinic and those who reside there, but an example of how a good work can transform. Even the villagers benefit from the clinic. They were fearful of catching the virus, but when they met Wayne and the volunteers, they too would go to the clinic for a variety of ailments, making the clinic a great outreach source for an area sorely in need.In this book one learns the rituals and the daily trials of the kids and workers of Wat Opot. The cremated remains of those who have died sit vessels with a picture tag hanging from the top. The urns connect the children to their loved ones and they are encouraged to visit and burn incense to honor those lost. Important medicines are provided to the children who without this place, would receive no treatment. This book is a testament to life. Wat Opot gives people hope and a new chance with education, food, clothing, medicines and often, more importantly, love. It is the love that provides these kids the strength to continue and to look forward even though many have suffered through horrible circumstances. They all live simple lives, but live full of hope thanks to Wayne and the volunteers. This is a great book-

A new character for Rose's Magical Universe By EBW A great beginning for a new story direction - a new witch, Alice, is just discovering her powers with the assistance of a cat familiar, a solid black kitten just returned to the world of the living to spend its ninth and final life.. Alice names her Midnight.Rose has a comfortable story telling style that invites the reader to suspend disbelief and join in the adventure set in a world where just about everything is possible. I look forward to seeing the direction this story line takes as it is sure to evolve into another novel.

She's on her last life and young Alice's existence is about to make a dramatic change for the better. With The Ninth Life, Rose Montague gives an enticing peek into a new supernatural world. Next on my reading list is Norma Jean's School of Witchery. I can't wait to start it!

Platform responsibilities make for familiarity with the public side of folks who serve the church through music. Is that all these folks do, however? There's more-much more-behind the scenes for these skilled, dedicated, servant leaders. This "much more" is the focus of C. Randall Bradley's "From Postlude to Prelude: Music Ministry's Other Six Days."There are more than a few books available directed toward the goal of worship and ministry leadership for musicians. From Postlude to Prelude focuses on what happens in the between times, when one Sunday's worship services are done and the next ones begin.Bradley is well-versed in all dimensions of the music ministry by virtue of his experience as a student, teacher, and practicing church musician. His writing is clear and succinct. He offers an excellent overview of the music ministry that is nigh unto encyclopedic. An experienced minister of music will be familiar with the topics addressed in this book, although they would be hard-pressed to find a more well-organized and broad identification of these matters. Non music ministers would likely experience more than a few "gee, I didn't know that" moments in reading this book. It could be an invaluable resource for a music minister search committee; indeed, Bradley addresses such groups specifically at some points in the text. The sheer number of topics included means that none of them are treated in depth. Yet Bradley's vast knowledge and experience is also reflected in the two appendixes and bibliography contained at the end of the book. These provide plenty of resources (websites, periodicals, and books) to cover any and all topics raised in "From Postlude to Prelude" in depth.

Extremely Helpful and Informative Book By Will I was in a class with Dr. Bradley while we went through this book and it is extremely informative and helpful in preparing for a career in worship music. It can be dry at times when reading on your own, but was a great book to read and discuss in class.

If you have been in the business for many years, this probably won't answer your questions either. I am still looking for that book - and maybe should just write it! This is an excellent overview of the responsibilities, relationships, pitfalls,... of this unique profession. It would be great if Vestries, Consistries, and other ruling bodies read this book to realize the pressures that they put on gifted musicians who have dedicated their lives to church work.
