She took an ASVAB pretest and did okay, but knew she needed a higher score for the job she wanted in the service. The review book is huge, more than what she could cover in the time she had. Instead she focused on the subject matter that her recruiter told her were important for the desired job. When she took the test she raised her score 29 points. Her recruiter was very pleased and wanted to know what book she had studied from so he could recommend it to others who would be taking the ASVAB.

Misprints, inaccurate questions By Jeremy I bought this book to study for the asvab, and while it contains a lot of information, I have noticed more than one error on the questions versus the answer provided. For example, on page 296 question 2, the question asks about a 60 ohm resistance, while on page 298, the answer states that the question asked for 60 kilo-ohms. I also noticed misprints like this in the diagnostic test.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Great Indian Themed Book! By Aditi@AThousandWordsAMillionBooks Okay, confession time! I'm Indian, and Indians probably will understand this book better than anyone else, because it's the culture we grow up in. The overbearing mother, the comparatively cooler father, the marriage that they're always talking about and the sibling that saves your ass no matter what...It probably sounds similar to lots of American things, and in many ways, it is, but it many more ways, it's not (*winks to Indian Friends*)And I'm not saying it's happened to me- the whole being forced to get married thing (yet) I'm only sixteen, but I know it will, and plus I've seen it happen countless times to my older cousins, so...But, now, I must get to the book! The first chapter is extremely extremely weird, and I was a little put off, but then the book got SIMPLY BRILLIANT! Set it small town rural India, to a major Indian city to New York City- the culture shock, the atmosphere, the Hindi, the all Indian jokes, the absolutely swoon worthy Rihaan Metha, the storyline- everything! It's like I can't describe it- but The Accidental Wife had me HOOKED! I loved how Naina and Rihaan slowly fell for each other, how things kept happening thatnmept them from being together, it was so realistic, how they let their pride get in the way of things, how they decided to stick to their stubborn ideals despite the obvious love and desire they were feeling! All I can say is- for an insight into Indian Society- READ THIS!

He is a neurosurgeon who is completely dedicated to his work and has no time or inclination for love or marriage. But Rihaan’s mother, like most Indian mothers, has plans and dreams for his marriage. She even has some ‘appropriate’ proposals ready at hand for him. When she finally entraps Rihaan to agree to get married, Rihaan puts up a condition that he would be the one to choose his future wife. After some thoughts and research, Rihaan finds Deepika online and gets married to her in a rushed ceremony in India. But on his wedding night, he has a surprise waiting for him in form of Naina…Rihaan comes across as this typical workaholic in the beginning whose requirements in a bride seems almost offensive – he doesn’t want a life partner as such, he could do with a robot. Fate has something for him in store that changes his life forever. Naina on the other hand feels a bit naïve in the beginning but slowly her character unfolds and grows so much that one cannot help but like her. These two people are poles apart, yet brought together by a cruel joke. From strangers to friends to lovers to strangers again, Rihaan and Naina take a journey of a lifetime, where they not only discover each other but also discover hidden parts of themselves. The plot seems simple and straightforward in the beginning, but then the author introduces certain twists in the novel that elevates it to a higher level than just a romance or just a simple chic-lit. I felt that the beginning was a bit rushed, specially the part with Deepika and I would have loved to have seen more of their online matrimonial site courtship. Once Naina is introduced, the pace settles down to a leisurely one. The author has done a great job of setting up the two characters and narrating their story to us in a way that is entertaining and captivating. I loved the doses of humour infused into the story that kept things light. It was an entertaining read and I will be on the lookout for more from this author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved the book...Recommended By Njkinny The Accidental Wife had me hooked right from its title to the blurb. I was intrigued and knew I had to read the book. The cover is also good but it is the blurb that catches your attention.Being the first book by the author that I have read, I had no preconceived notions and expectations from her and so, was surprised when I started loving the story right from the start. The prologue is beautifully arranged to give the reader an initial jolt and raise his interest level which only keeps increasing as the story unfolds.Simi's writing style is balanced, engaging and I could see that she had done her research when talking about the medical procedures, the lifestyle of Indian doctors working abroad and the lives of NRI Indians in a foreign land. With the usual spicy ingredients of an overbearing and over dramatic mother to the seemingly henpecked and cool father to a protective and understanding sibling to the harassed and desperately-trying-to-save-his-independence, hero; everything was sketched admirably.Initially, I could not fully connect with the reasons given by the heroine for her actions by which she became The Accidental Wife and I thought "How can such an intelligent woman be such a fool?" but then later, I stopped caring because I was more engrossed in the intense romance and emotions developing between the protagonists. What started out as a predictable read soon became a totally unexpected story that had me hooked and glued to my seat all through. I kept rooting for these two and praying that nothing happened to stop their happily-ever-after.An intense, emotionally engaging and a solid story, I absolutely loved The Accidental Wife by Simi K. Rao and give it 4.5 out of 5. Strongly recommended to everyone, I am sure you will enjoy reading it. Simi is a talented writer and I will be checking out her other works in the future. This review is also available on my blog Njkinny's World of Books & Stuff

A story to reacquaint you with courage In a world of perpetual shadow, a boy is born wielding remarkable power over fire. Amos is seven when he kills a Shadow Wolf and becomes a legend in Shiloh. Everyone is amazed by him... and afraid that his father may be a madman. His father tells stories about a world beyond the Shadow, a time before the Shadow. People who tell those stories usually come to unfortunate ends. The year Amos and his best friend, Simeon, turn twelve, they are itching to prove themselves. An impetuous plan to steal a beautiful lantern goes miserably awry, and the lantern s owner prophesies that Amos will be devoured by the Shadow. For the first time, a seed of fear is planted in Amos's mind, and when his father is killed by a Shadow Wolf on the last day of the Great Hunt, the fear takes hold. If so great and brave a man as his father could fall to the Shadow, what hope does he have? Does anyone ever truly escape the Shadow? Shiloh is the first book in The Shiloh Series.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful story By LaLa Shiloh is a beautiful story, beautifully told. I fell in love with the characters -- their flaws, their love, their courage, their hope.I love when a book practically forces me to stay up late to finish it. Shiloh did that. And it's not just that I wanted to find out what happened (though I surely did). I also just enjoyed the journey. The writing is crisp and compelling.Shiloh is a fantasy that is not fantastical. It is a moral tale that does not moralize. It strikes just the right tone. A wonderful book. I can't wait for the next installment!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Story By Ali I started this book and could not put it down. To me, that means everything. Few authors have that effect on me. The author does such an amazing job wih describing the scene, it is as if you are there. You find yourself cheering for the characters. You will love all aspects how they have hope when so many do not. How they are flawed but can still manage to love and find strength. Its a wonderful story that keeps you looking for more

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful By Ming Helena Sorensen spins a beautiful and haunting tale that grabbed me from the very beginning and I could not escape the pull of the story. The characters that Sorensen fashioned together walked their way deep into my heart and their struggles resonated deep within my soul. We all fear the Shadow that lurks in all the corners of this world and we all long for a home where the shadow will be banished forever. And as the Shadow encroached toward Amos; my heart ached. And I cheered as Phebe and Simeon fought with all they had against the hopelessness that threatened to take hold of their hearts.Thank you Mrs. Sorensen for a wonderful tale that resounds true.

Do you teach English as a foreign or second language? Are your students at an intermediate or advanced level? If so, this book will save you a lot of lesson prep time. With 50 role plays that span a wide variety of topics, you’ll almost always be able to find a role play that will fit your lesson topic. Inside are role plays that cover everything from government regulation to messy roommates. With commonly taught topics like technology, music, job interviews, and movies. As well as more varied topics like color, adoption, and super heroes. The role plays are simple and easy to understand, while still being fun and thought provoking. They are easy to set up, requiring just some copying and cutting. Some role plays require no prep at all besides reading the instructions. Most of all, the role plays are designed to get your students talking. Each role play has a full lesson plan, with detailed instructions on how to do the role play, as well as a suggested warm up and wrap up activity. Also included, are optional discussion questions related to the role play topic. Finally, each role play has role play cards or an activity sheet that can be copied and given to students. Worried about timing? All of the role plays are adaptable, and designed to fill the amount of time you need them to fill. Most can be done in as little as fifteen minutes or be stretched to two or three hours. What about class sizes? While the optimal class sizes for these role plays are eight to twenty four students, almost all of the role plays can be used with classes as small as three students or as large as necessary. Also, each role play can handle an odd or even number of students.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. poor in terms of material - just plain roleplay ideas By Nick The reason I gave a 2-star rating is that the material is really poor. The author introduces some roleplay ideas, but there is no supportive material. My students cannot perform the roleplay without any vocabulary knowledge or any guidance of how they can use the language needed. The first and most important part of communication classes is to present the topic and guide them before they can actually talk to each other. This book completely lacks this material. Definitely isn't worth the money.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Communicative and Performance Based Learning By Aida Corpuz What a wonderful resource for teachers wanting to incorporate communicative learning and teaching into their own pedagogy. The role-play situations included in the book are presented through real-world contexts and allow students to creatively incorporate their own back ground knowledge of the given topics and portray the situations through their own cultural lens. Doing so allows the situations in the book to share and teach different cultural perspectives about the various provocative topics.Detailed lesson plans and accompanying supplemental material are included with each situation and teachers need only to minimally modify to meet the needs of the different proficiency levels of their classes. This is A MUST resource to add to any teachers' repertoire to foster engaging and meaningful speaking and learning experiences!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome! By Lee Yarbrough This book is a great resource for any teacher! There is a wide array of role plays to choose from, and the best part is their adaptability. You can include specific grammar or other areas of focus (giving advice, expressing opinions, etc.) for a class very easily. I also like the discussion questions given after each role play. You can use some of the discussion questions to generate warm up responses at the beginning of a class or just use them (as recommended in the book) as a follow up activity. Having enough material to pick and choose from as well as pre-prepped really fun and adaptable activities is a major bonus. This book is awesome!

It's a cool reference guide as a coffee table book, use as bathroom reader or a coversation starter. Thompson compiled some fun and interesting questions. Questions that might make the reader think, "I've never thought about that before."Despite the title of the book, not all the questions are silly.Thompson choose a bevy of questions having to do with science, history and theory. Questions such as why a chameleon changes color, how do bees navigate, what are the origins of the English language, or did the lost city of Atlantis exist. The answers are short, precise and detailed. Definitely enough information to satisfy an answer.I think my favorite question in the entire book is What is the origin of "Son of a Gun?" So often do we come upon colloquialisms and idioms that are used frequently and we don't give any thought into where they came from. Thompson not only has an answer, but continued the section by taking about the multiple sources from where the phrase orginated and how it has come to be used currently. As informative as his book is, it's easily digestible. I'm going pass this book off to a niece or nephew and tell them to learn some facts to pass on to their friends. Spread the knowledge!

It provides the answers to so many questions that are fun, interesting, and occasionally- historical! The outline of the book is fairly simple. The question (sometimes silly, sometimes intriguing) is posed as a heading, and then there is a quick but detailed answer. These answers are a few paragraphs to a little over a page. The answers are concise but completely filled with great information. The title of the book suggests that all the questions might be crude or overly silly, but that’s not it at all! Although some of the questions are silly (for example besides the title, “why don’t birds fall off branches when they’re asleep” or “why do dogs have wet noses”), there are so many more kinds of questions in this book! Some of them are vaguely scientific (such as, “what causes Parkinson’s Disease” or “how does general anesthesia work”), while others are historical (such as, “how did Mother’s Day originate”). Although they are so different, all these questions are really interesting, with compelling answers and well-researched responses. I really enjoy this book. I expect it’s usually used as a “bathroom reader” but I read it all in one sitting! It’s so much fun, and I learned a lot!

As such my needs for enjoyable, but appropriate, literature has also increased. I look for books that contain cool facts, hard questions, and a condensed easy to read form. Enter "Can Holding in a Fart Kill You?" This book is absolutely jam packed with intriguing questions or musings on life such as 'What does Trainspotting Involve?' (What is trainspotting?) and 'Why is the Empire State Building Famous?' (Because it's big?).Each question is given 3-6 paragraphs of detailed information which not only answers the questions but expands it to larger concepts and ideas that can help !you! in life. But really, this book is hard to put down and is full of fun information which is presented in a concise and clear manner which I enjoyed reading. Heck, sometimes I even find myself taking it to the work home office for my afternoon reading pleasure.

The Earth is doomed. Humanity has a chance. In the near future, an alien probe arrives on Earth with a pivotal mission—determine if humanity has what it takes to survive the impending invasion by a merciless armada. The probe discovers Marc Ibarra, a young inventor, who holds the key to a daring gambit that could save a fraction of Earth's population. Humanity's only chance lies with Ibarra's ability to keep a terrible secret and engineer the planet down the narrow path to survival. Earth will need a fleet. One with a hidden purpose. One strong enough to fight a battle against annihilation. The Ember War is the first installment in an epic military sci-fi series. If you like A Hymn Before Battle by John Ringo and The Last Starship by Vaughn Heppner, then you'll love this explosive adventure with constant thrills and high stakes from cover to cover. ++++ Q&A with Richard Fox: How would you describe The Ember War? In as few words as possible: Battlestar Galactica meets Mass Effect. In more words: It is a story of first contact with galactic empires, some with our best interests at heart, others that see us as an infestation to be wiped out. Your previous books were historical fiction and spy thrillers, why write a military science fiction novel? I’ve been a science fiction fan since I was a kid, stories about space marines, power armor and battles between giant space fleets have are always at the top of my reading list. Setting a space opera around the star carrier Breitenfeld was exciting for me, and I’m sure that excitement will carry over to the readers. Are you going to hit us with a cliff hanger ending? As a reader, I’m not a big fan of cliff hanger endings so I won't do that to you. The ending for The Ember War is definitely a preview of coming attractions. Where’d you get the idea for The Ember War? The stars are silent. We’ve had our ear to the sky for decades but we haven’t had a confirmed peep from any alien civilizations. There are three reasonable explanations: no one else is out there, we don’t have the right tools to listen, or something is silencing extraterrestrial civilizations as they start broadcasting. If the third explanation is the right one, how could humanity save itself from that threat, and what if other aliens could help us? What makes this unique? I have a strong military background and that carries into my writing. I spent ten years on active duty in the US Army, and served two combat deployments to Iraq. I try and bring all the fear, doubt and pulse pounding adrenaline from war into my novels, and I hope it shines through for the readers. If this was a movie, what would it be rated? PG-13 for some language and intense action.

An alien AI decides to help humanity survive an approaching genocidal alien fleet. The probe makes contact with a very bright young man and together they need to elevate the humans technology to a high enough level than there is a chance of survival. The scene is now set for a very interesting story of how the AI/young genius are able to guide humanity through a rapid evolution of technology, politics, culture, etc.Unfortunately, Mr. Fox doesn't devote a single word to this story line. Instead, immediately after the AI and the young genius get together, the story jumps ahead 60 years to just hours before the alien invasion arrives. The book (and the 2nd book in the series) is just one battle after another. Our heroes fight drones and reptilian aliens (book 2).The books are fast paced and move quickly from one battle to the next. The description of the battles is conpetently done. Unfortunately, there is nothing new here. Everything has been done over and over ad nauseam. If you are new to the genre, you will probably enjoy the book. However, if you read a lot of military SF, there is nothing new here.

The level of detail for some situations was overdone - e.g. you don't need a paragraph to describe the size of a dining room, and why bother at all when it contributes nothing to the story? Another criticism I have is to ease up on the hyperbole - this author used it to the point of cliche.

Some college kid gets woken up by his cell phone and keeps turning it off so he can get back to sleep. He knows he’s supposed to get up and go to classes, but after the night he had, no way. Still, his cell phone keeps ringing. He actually powers it completely down and the thing comes back on and is still yelling at him! By now, I would be really worried about whether I was still asleep or not. He finally answers his phone and then he’s off to rendezvous with something in the desert.Turns out, his rendezvous was a serious necessity if he was to save all of humanity! Wow! That’s kind of an important meeting, don’t you think. Anyway, you start off with this kid living approximately around our time and then the next chapter has you flying through space as a Atlantic Union Marine. They're combat dropping on to an asteroid that is supposed to be a mining operation. For some reason, the mining operation has not be answering radio calls so the Marines are going to find out why. From here on in the action is pretty fast and continuous. I just love this kind of science fiction story. There’s a lot of shooting and being shot, deranged robot mining machines and then alien droids coming from every where. The whole premise of the story is that the kid, remember him, has been planning for the last 60 years to save humanity from an alien attack. At the time he had his meeting in the desert, Earth and all of humanity was just about as doomed as you can be. Yet, he had just wrote a scientific paper which alerted the envoy from deep space that there might be something worth saving in the Solar System. The only problem is that Earth has only 60 years to get ready.Again, I really like the book because of all the fast action and it was a military science fiction book. What I found lacking was any in-depth background on the main characters. Even the kid, a.k.a., Marc Ibarra, wasn’t really covered in detail as to his background or anything. The same can be said for his Granddaughter, Stacy. How did she come to being and what apparently caused her to end up being the only Grandchild of Marc Ibarra. The story alludes to his Granddaughter as being very special but nothing happens that really shows her to be special, so far. Maybe that’s coming the in next books. The nice thing about reading this book is that the next two books in the series are already published. “The Ruins of Anthalas” and “Blood of Heroes” are on Amazon and in my library. I have some more reading to do.

This compelling assessment of U.S.-China relations is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of the globalized world.

Many see China as a rival superpower to the United States and imagine the country’s rise to be a threat to U.S. leadership in Asia and beyond. Thomas J. Christensen argues against this zero-sum vision. Instead, he describes a new paradigm in which the real challenge lies in dissuading China from regional aggression while encouraging the country to contribute to the global order. Drawing on decades of scholarship and experience as a senior diplomat, Christensen offers a compelling new assessment of U.S.-China relations that is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of the globalized world.

The China Challenge shows why China is nowhere near powerful enough to be considered a global “peer competitor” of the United States, but it is already strong enough to destabilize East Asia and to influence economic and political affairs worldwide. Despite China’s impressive achievements, the Chinese Communist Party faces enormous challenges. Christensen shows how nationalism and the threat of domestic instability influence the party’s decisions on issues like maritime sovereignty disputes, global financial management, control of the Internet, climate change, and policies toward Taiwan and Hong Kong.

China benefits enormously from the current global order and has no intention of overthrowing it; but that is not enough. China’s active cooperation is essential to global governance. Never before has a developing country like China been asked to contribute so much to ensure international stability. If China obstructs international efforts to confront nuclear proliferation, civil conflicts, financial instability, and climate change, those efforts will falter, but even if China merely declines to support such efforts, the problems will grow vastly more complicated.

Analyzing U.S.-China policy since the end of the Cold War, Christensen articulates a balanced strategic approach that explains why we should aim not to block China’s rise but rather to help shape its choices so as to deter regional aggression and encourage China’s active participation in international initiatives that benefit both nations.

The China Challenge: Shaping the Choices of a Rising Power, by Thomas J. Christensen

Review “Christensen…[offers] a model of judicious analysis: Carefully deconstructing the economic, military and diplomatic balances between the United States and China, he reveals the magnitude of the latter’s challenge without inflating it.” (Ali Wyne - Washington Post)“Many books are written about China these days. This is a standout. Christensen is a widely respected scholar who served as the Bush administration’s expert on China. He has combined these perspectives to give us a balanced, informative, and highly intelligent guide to dealing with China.” (Fareed Zakaria, author of The Post-American World)“Can a rising power and an established power cooperate toward mutually beneficial aims? The China Challenge presents a thoughtful analysis of this question through the lens of recent developments in U.S.-China relations.” (Henry A. Kissinger)“Tom Christensen has done us a great service: he has decoded the U.S.-China relationship with the analytical power of a great scholar and the real-world lessons of a policymaker. The China Challenge is lucid, learned, and relentlessly sensible, navigating the great predicament of the 21st century. Christensen is fluent in history but never captive to it. He aims not to prevent China''s rise but to shape it with a mix of strength and moderation. Above all, he shows us how to avoid a conflict that he considers possible but, in no way, inevitable. He made a believer out of me.” (Evan Osnos, National Book Award-winning author of Age of Ambition)“There is no one I would rather read on China than Tom Christensen. He has the rare ability to transcend the conventional either/or debates about China and to see the country simultaneously as a power with the potential to disrupt global politics in many negative ways and as a country that the United States must engage as a partner in solving global problems. He also has a deep and much needed understanding of how Chinese domestic politics shape Chinese foreign policy. If you read only one book on China, make it The China Challenge.” (Anne-Marie Slaughter, president, New America Foundation)“Christensen addresses a vital challenge―US policy toward China―with an artful blend of scholarship, modern history, and diplomatic experience. He explains skillfully why the United States needs an adroit combination of national strength, international partnerships, and cooperation with China. Christensen''s aim: a search for mutual interests, both between the two countries and in support of regional and global systems.” (Robert B. Zoellick, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State)“The rise of China is one of the prime challenges for American foreign policy. Thomas Christensen uses his first rate credentials both as a scholar and a practitioner to give a clear and compelling answer to this challenge.” (Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Harvard University, and former Assistant Secretary of Defense)“Tom Christensen has written a book that displays the ideal mix of ''richness, rigor, and relevance.'' Countering naïve neo-conservative and liberal interventionists who seem to think that threats to an adversary''s vital interests are all you need to induce compliance, and naïve rationalist liberals who believe economic and institutional engagement will largely contain revisionist preferences, Christensen shows from a careful empirical analysis of Chinese foreign policy how stable coexistence in US-China relations rests on a delicate balance of both deterrence and reassurance. Hopefully future US decision makers will read this book and absorb its message.” (Alastair Iain Johnston, Laine Professor of China in World Affairs, Harvard University)“Christensen is one of the world’s leading China experts, an experienced senior policymaker, and a top-notch international relations theorist. The China Challenge is outstanding, a must-read for anybody interested in China, American foreign policy, or global affairs more generally.” (Gideon Rose, editor, Foreign Affairs)“Everything you need to know about the sometimes bewildering, always tricky issues generated by the rise of China is here in Tom Christensen''s lucid book. China is something new in the world, a rising authoritarian state that is an economic colossus and very nearly a first-rate military power, which is what makes it the most important strategic challenge we''re going to face for the foreseeable future. Christensen doesn''t promise that dealing with China will be easy. It won''t be. But he is utterly clear-headed, realistic, persuasive, and, perhaps most important, cautiously optimistic, as he resets the terms of the continuing debate.” (Richard Bernstein, author of China 1945)“Dr. Christensen gives us a detailed history and critique of recent Sino-US relations, thoughtful evaluations of the views of other scholars and an insider''s view of dealing with China on important issues. His balanced judgments on the difficulties and possibilities of Sino-US relations in the future are sobering but eventually hopeful. Anyone seriously interested in one of the most consequential bilateral relationships that will shape the world''s future needs to read this book.” (Dennis Blair, Former Commander in Chief, US Pacific Command and Director of National Intelligence)

About the Author Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Thomas J. Christensen is the William P. Boswell Professor of World Politics and director of the China and the World Program at Princeton University. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

A must-read for those who want to understand US-China relations By Yan Chang You need to read this book to gain the insider perspective that other authors cannot provide. Christensen has written a thoughtful and enlightening book on China and its future prospects based on his decades of experience and research in and about China. As a scholar of China and international relations, he offers a unique perspective that have aided, and continue to aid policymakers and politicians in guiding the evolution of US-China relations. Chapter 5 on global governance is particularly helpful in understanding the challenge that China poses to global governance and the international community.A second point that must be made: the knowledge he possesses about China cannot be overemphasized. He has studied its political structure and leadership for decades. He has spent, cumulatively, years in China researching and interviewing politicians and IR experts. He speaks and writes Chinese fluently. Combined with his training in international relations theory, he is one of a few scholars that can qualitatively examine US-China relations and assist in its development. What Christensen can offer is an invaluable insider perspective due to three things: decades of exhaustive research, which includes one-on-one interviews with Chinese government officials and scholars; his language ability, which allows him to conduct personal interviews without the intrusion of an interpreter; and his years as a US government official and now an adviser to the State Department. In examining US-China relations, there is a lot of interpretation of bare facts without context. Yes, China's military is growing. But it's not aimed at the US because they know, better than we do, the costs of competing militarily with the United States. Yes, China's economy is booming and they own a whopping lot of US debt. But they know, better than we do, that China's economy is utterly dependent on the US economy and if we crash, they crash. But I digress. What the China Challenge presents is interpretation of facts with context. I urge you to read this book.

Van Steenkiste Thomas Christensen explores how the United States should manage China’s rise in the areas of security and international governance since the end of the Cold War. Mr. Christensen suggests that the United States strike the best possible balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes towards the return of China to greatness. The United States needs a strong military and economic presence in East Asia while adopting a consistent diplomatic posture that invites China to participate in regional and global governance.Without this strong and consistent demeanor in East Asia, China could be more tempted to settle its (territorial) differences with its East Asian neighbors through coercion, or to encourage its allies to act similarly. The use of coercion by China to settle these differences would lead to the outcome that Chinese strategists fear the most: the encirclement of China by an alliance of its East Asian neighbors led by a hostile United States bent on restoring at a minimum the status quo ante. The author correctly labels American rhetorical flourish like the “Asia pivot” as unhelpful and misleading, feeding the paranoia of some Chinese nationalists that the United States has only one paramount objective: keep China down. This zero-sum game mentality will further encourage China to under-invest in regional and global governance and to free ride on the coattails of the United States, the founder and driver of a mostly benevolent and beneficial international world order since 1945.To encourage China to contribute its fair share to regional and global governance is more difficult to solve than the above-mentioned security challenge for three reasons. First, China can block completely or erect significant obstacles to regional and global governance if it either opposes or refuses to contribute actively to these cross-border governance challenges. Secondly, China cannot be treated like any other developing country due to its sheer size. Finally, if China is perceived to operate as a free-rider, other great powers will probably not be strongly encouraged to contribute their own fair share to the constructive resolution or management of regional and global governance issues. Mr. Christensen correctly points out that the United States is inexperienced and much less well-structured in inducing a developing country to contribute assertively to solving or managing transnational challenges than in using the coercive diplomacy of great powers. To ignore Chinese core interests completely in countries such as Iran, North Korea, and Sudan will only encourage China to be unhelpful in properly solving or managing cross-border governance issues. To start solving this quandary, Mr. Christensen recommends for example that the United States capitalize on China’s growing global economic footprint. The active participation of China in the multinational fight against Somalian pirates in the Gulf of Aden clearly demonstrates that the Chinese leadership can be successfully socialized into understanding the cost of instability in any part of the world and into supporting the international community’s efforts to stabilize such areas. Similarly, the United States can continue to offer its expertise to China in solving the challenges associated with the further deterioration of its environment that has spillover effects outside its borders. In summary, the author invites the United States to display both strength and toughness while reassuring and listening to the Chinese.

Erickson When it comes to the vital issue of U.S.-China relations, rigorous, readable scholarship is in regrettably short supply. Even amid the current profusion of books on the subject, “The China Challenge: Shaping the Choices of a Rising Power” by Princeton University professor Thomas Christensen represents a uniquely powerful contribution. Given the difficulties inherent in its weighty subject, the volume should long command an important place in your bookshelf or on your desk. Most importantly, it offers Christensen’s unique perspective as a leading scholar on the topic who has also served as a high-level diplomat (Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs with responsibility for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia).Christensen writes clearly and memorably. He deploys wide-ranging but carefully distilled data and citations to support his points. He shares vivid personal recollections (my own favorite: literally dropping his coffee upon reading news that China voted for UN Security Council Resolution 1970, referring Qadaffi’s government to the International Criminal Court). He reflects deeply, and draws connections that are both gripping and relevant. Sharp, precise graphics illustrate key concepts. The result: a remarkably accessible yet sophisticated book--the thinking person’s guide to understanding and managing Sino-American relations. In sum, “The China Challenge” offers:• A compelling case that today’s international system allows the United States and China to coexist peacefully and further common interests and responsibilities, even as they continue to compete in specific areas.• Reason for nuanced concern: China remains far from surpassing the United States, but is “posing problems [even] without catching up.”• A positive vision for bringing a rising China further into the twenty-first century international system, and for shaping its policy choices in a mutually-favorable direction.• Detailed insights into what approaches have been more, and less, effective in influencing Beijing’s behavior productively.• Specific recommendations for subsequent U.S. policymakers, including the next president, to address these important issues.Managing Sino-American relations effectively in coming years will be of paramount importance, yet tremendously difficult and demanding in practice. One of the most challenging aspects, from a U.S. perspective, will be working to shape a rising China’s behavior in a positive direction that is compatible with the current international system.Fortunately, amid these undeniable challenges, one decision is easy: if you have not done so already, you must read “The China Challenge.” Christensen’s unique insights as a scholar-practitioner concerning this century’s most important bilateral relationship will remain instructive for years to come. You can read my full-length review of “The China Challenge: Shaping the Choices of a Rising Power” at http://nationalinterest.org/feature/managing-us-china-relations-challenging-picking-good-14412

Getting started with programming can be an intimidating challenge.

Most books and tutorials assume lots of previous knowledge, skip over jargon and new concepts, and use examples that only make sense if you already understand programming.

This book is different. It gives you an introduction to programming in Python from the ground up, starting with tips on installation and setting up your programming environment, and moving through the core parts of the Python language in a logical order. Dr. Jones has drawn on his many years experience teaching programming to produce a book that will guide you through the language step by step in simple terms.

The book doesn't assume any previous knowledge, and introduces fundamental programming concepts like variables, loops and functions using simple terms and easy-to-follow examples that you can run and modify.

The book takes a unique approach to practical exercises. Rather than simply presenting you with the solutions, it shows you how large, complex programs are gradually built up from simple building blocks, explaining the role of every line. You can download the examples and exercise solutions - edit, modify and run them yourself.

What you'll learn from this book:
  • How to install Python and set up your programming environment
  • How to work with strings, numbers and variables
  • How to understand and fix error messages
  • How to read and write data in files
  • How to processing large amounts of data with lists and loops
  • How to write useful and reliable functions
  • How to controlling the flow of your programs with conditions
  • How to store data in dicts for lightning-fast processing
  • How to find useful modules and figure out how to use them
Praise for Dr. Jones' previous books "I actually have this book to thank for easing me into programming which is now something I do everyday as part of my profession." "The most useful guide to Python I've found" "Exceedingly clear and rife with examples. The author talks about a rather dull subject ... in a clear and informative manner." About the author

Dr. Jones trained as a biologist and started his programming career by learning Perl. He started teaching programming to other people shortly after that, and quickly branched out into other languages including Python. Since then he has taught programming to hundreds of beginners, specializing in courses for people without a traditional computer science background. His teaching philosophy is that programming courses must be friendly, approachable, and focussed on practical results.

Dr. Jones currently teaches programming in his position of Lecturer in Bioinformatics at Edinburgh University. He is the author of two previous programming books: Python for Biologists and Advanced Python for Biologists. This is his first programming book for a general audience.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. highly recommended! By Ed Hansen This book has introduced Python in a very clear, straight-forward, helpful, step-by-step manner that has proven to be very, very useful. After suffering through on-line tutorials with minimal understanding, this book combined with the end-of-chapter exercises has been far superior and rewarding. (not Ed, but Ed's spouse, Ed's a programmer-extraodinaire)

It does not explain how to set up your work space. Just down load and it should do it, but doesn't. I had my son come over and do that for me. I'm 55.

24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A Good starter’s book but not the best one! By Greprep Club ### Advantages:# Good Value for Money: The combined package, i.e. the book + free online GRE Course, is a very good tool to have for a beginner.# Its greatest merit lies in its Chapters Reviews. The chapters are covered in great detail and are bolstered with a large number of solved examples. The text is quite extensive and exhaustive.# The answers to the practice questions, in the book, are very detailed and useful. If trivial errors are the bane of your preparation then this book is quite a nifty tool for you.# Stress on Vocabulary: There is a significant amount of stress on vocabulary building. This is the greatest edge that it has over its competition.### Disadvantages:# Difficulty level of questions, specifically in the Quantitative section, could have been better. The practice test set questions are not at par with the Questions by ETS or Manhattan.# Topics Probability and Statistics are poorly covered! This is a major challenge with the book. These topics have a significant presence in the GRE test however they have been neglected in the book.# Lack of tests. There are two tests (paper) in the book and a diagnostic test online. However most of other books offer more number of tests and also of better quality.# Testing analysis tools leave much to be desired for! When compared to the test given by Princeton or Manhattan or Kaplan the test analysis tool falls short.# Very average AWA section: The coverage of AWA section is not at par with any other top books available in the Market!Overall it is a balanced book and decent value for money. However, it is not sufficient by itself, if the user wants to score more than 315 points especially not for AWA section. If you are looking to score higher on the GRE you must consider other books. It is highly advisable that you look into ETS GRE as they have actual GRE Questions.~~~ Some other Frequently asked Questions: ~~~~~~What are some of the other study options that I have?~~~Some students, in the past, have bypassed Barron’s completely and started more specialized books such as the ETS or Manhattan GRE. For example, Manhattan GRE Set of eight strategy guides come with 8 books that target specific math and verbal areas. You would have a much better shot at scoring 315+ using this (not guaranteed), however they require 2-3 months to complete. ETS has a similar collection of 3 books (general + quantitative + verbal). They also have four tests on CD rom enclosed along with the package.~~~What is a good study plan using Barron’s GRE?~~~Since it is a good book for beginner’s, I would recommend that you could start with Barron and finish it within a month, then evaluate which are your areas of strength/ weakness. Based on your analysis you can invest in a book by Manhattan/ ETS to bolster your weaknesses. If probability and Statistics is not your strong suite you will need to refer to another book.~~~Will this get me to 315+?~~~This book alone, probably, won’t get you to 315+ score; but for people out of college it would refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You should seriously consider investing in ETS as they provide you with questions that have appeared in GRE before.~~~Other Books I should know about?~~~The GRE Guides from MGMAT and The Official Guide for GREBest of luck with your test prep!Sandy, GRE: 323 GREPrepClubPS: I reply to comments on Amazon.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A pretty good one-book GRE guide By Vince Kotchian I'm a long-time GRE tutor. This book is a good choice if you only use one book in addition to the ETS books, but don't expect it to solve all your GRE problems (as it claims it will). The authors of this book clearly have taken their task seriously: the book feels professional and it's fairly comprehensive. I'll separate this review into three components: content, technique, and practice material.Content: all question types and nearly all math concepts are covered and explained. The list of vocab words is good, but "high-frequency" means "high-frequency" on PAST GRE tests. Don't expect these words to show up on the GRE you take - they may or may not.Technique: I like most of the techniques offered for math and verbal, but for verbal, students should be aware that they'll need to refine and experiment with things like how to read passages and proving their answers. I thought the essay technique was okay, but it needs more depth: most of my students really need a primer on how to construct each part of their essays.Practice material: the GRE-style practice questions and tests are good, but not great. Real GRE questions are more tougher; they're more complex and wordy.Overall, this book is a good guide to your study and analysis of real ETS GRE questions. Just don't believe the back of the book which claims that this is the "only book you will need to get the score you want". That's marketing, not reality. To really score high, you will most likely need more: more vocab, more math practice, refined verbal technique, more computer practice tests, and better essay advice.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good prep book for math By Leslie M Good prep book for math, but comparatively wimpy on verbal. The level of difficulty of the questions is similar to the Official GRE books. I would suggest getting the official books and using this book to augment your prep. I bought it for a class. Definitely recommend taking a class for anyone wishing to take the GRE, especially since our instructor had some better strategies than the ones offered in this book. Also this book is virtually identical to the 20th Edition, but with changed font/typeface formatting.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fills in the gaps. By Tom Tweed Awesome book. For years I wanted to learn Rails, but ended up falling back to development with PHP because of the crappy "Rails Tutorial" type books or the absolutely useless Team Treehouse, and Rails for Zombies videos which you will far surpass with this book. This book also beats the hell out of the out of date and error filled books from major publishers like O'reilly, Packt, and Apress. This book fills in the gaps missing from the Ruby on Rails website, and has far less mistakes than those books from the major publishers (nearly no mistakes in this book, the few in there are you can quickly figure out and may actually be due to kindle formatting errors). This book was a joy to go through from beginning to end, and I always found myself learning something new. Only criticism I have is that it needs a table of contents for quickly jumping through the book.If you have reached the point where you can learn from a book - then get this book if you want to learn Ruby on Rails. Unfortunately most programmers can't learn from a book, and that is why they remain mediocre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very complete. By Julian Gonzalez Very complete, it covers all the basic topics to star developing with rails until get confident to start using other gems.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. For everyone who want's to learn Ruby on Rails this is a great start to get you on the tracks By Frank This is probably the most straightforward book on Ruby on Rails. I think it is highly recommended for beginning Ruby on Rails developers. It helps you through a initial setup and you program your first Rails application. This is done by smaller projects, so it is also possible to choose the chapter/subject you like to practise. It has also a nice and usable 'Tips and Tricks’ chapter. It also contains lots of references if you want to know more about a subject. Conclusion: this book is highly recommended. You will learn Ruby on Rails in every aspect. From installing a development system (RVM) to developing your first application.
