By Mr. Lejon First off, I'd like to state that I read about 4-5 books /week and am hard pressed to find any scifi/fantasy novels I've not already read or heard about. (Yeah, I know, what do I do with my life?!) Favourite novels include Stormlight Archive (by Sanderson) and Name of the Wind (by Rothfuss) to get a whiff of my general tastes. Although, who doesn't like those!?:)Seeing the stunning reviews for this novel I obviously dove right in with high expectations. Maybe that's where I went wrong? Should've expected nothing as to not get disappointed, oh well.The book has a very interesting premise; the world was united after WW3 and aliens showed up bearing gifts and peaceful intentions. Not long after the aliens started taking over and humanity is now struggling to fight back alongside some defectors from the alien colonists on Earth. The MC has "magic" Powers of darkness and can create singularities and forcewaves. This is all cool of course, and the worldbuilding is fine, so are the characters and emotional insights into the MCs mind. BUT, this book is tormented by one, in my humble opinion, HUGE flaw.This book is slow, veery slow. The detailing is monstrous in scope and sometimes I must remind myself I'm not reading Robert Jordans works. Whole pages can be filled in between responses in the dialogue which takes away from the abrubtness of reality and makes you inclined to skip whole paragraphs just to "hear" how the dialogue progresses. When you skip reading sections, you know the book is not good enough in my opinion.The flow of the book is like when you tell your friends you went to the paintballrange last weekend, you ought to tell them about what fun you had and what awesome tactics you used on the range, and show a massive purple bruise on your shoulder from a particular nasty sting. What you DON'T tell them is how you exited through your brown apartment door, put your keys in the pocket of your black leather jacket, went down 3 flights of stairs, crossed the street to your car, explained the surrounding streets and what kind of people were out taking a walk, before you got into the car, turned the keys in the ignition and drove to the paintballrange. You don't add that to the story, it's simply not interesting. You just don't.This book could've been a masterpiece, instead it drags on and makes you wanna go see MMA fights just to get some action back in your bloodstream. I feel no urge to pick up the next installment, but knowing me I probably will, gotta have Something to read I suppose. :)

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An amazing book from the beautiful prologue to the exciting ending. By shdwstrk Torall's book was everything I had hoped and more. I started reading this book on Friday after work, and next thing i knew it was 2 am, I had forgotten dinner, and I was 400 pages in. Could barely get to sleep I was so excited to continue the story of Damien and his companions. The imagery was beautiful, the characters were great, and the story just wouldn't let me stop. I highly recommend this to scifi lovers everywhere and can't wait for Torall's next book.

AN EXCELLENT TALE -- STRETCHED TO BECOME BORING By Derek White A copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*The book is good, but in my opinion not enough so to deserve the rave reviews.The story, the creation of the world of the future and the consistency are all excellent, but the pace of action is far far too slow. There is too much unnecessary waffle giving details not essential to the tale. If the same tale had been told in less than 300 pages instead of nearly 600 I would have been giving it five stars.Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official

Atheism is by no means as easy as it looks By Ed Morgan As an avid reader of religion and philosophy, I was intrigued by Terry Eagleton's decision to enter the "God Debate". As someone who wrote 'Why Marx Was Right', his defense of religion is a bit unexpected, but also great evidence of his point that "the Almighty has proved remarkably difficult to dispose of."'Culture and the Death of God' is a dense academic text that reviews the last three centuries in which one intellectual movement after another has denied the existence of God only to pursue the divine elsewhere. The irony fuels Eagleton in this cunning exploration of Western religious culture, which I enjoyed quite a lot, although it was quite a challenge. From science to art, Eagleton seems pessimistic that we will find a satisfying alternative to God and remains sympathetic to religion as a basically decent expression of core human dilemmas and values, corrupted as institutions may be.There are many Westerners questioning the merits of secular society right now and the revival in the philosophy of religion has brought a lot of groundbreaking work! Readers of this book would also like the collection of essays found in Reasoned Faith: Essays in Philosophical Theology in Honor of Norman Kretzmann.

Compelling By Vincent Hevern Harrowing ride through the last two centuries of Western thought as Eagleton unpacks the multiple levels of unbelief in religion and skewers so many from the Enlightenment onward with their own bad faith in finding substitutes for God without acknowledging what they were really doing. The uncompromising atheism of Nietzsche stands in contrast to so many others who saw in culture a substitute for religion. Eagleton may not himself be a beliver, but he "gets" the raw and paradoxical call of Christianity which is so unlike the religion rejected in the West. His analysis of the emptiness and pretensions of both postmodernism and contemporary capitalism are withering. A fascinating book.

Curiously, Eagleton seems to have omitted feminism and womankind from his list of candidates to fill the god-shaped hole left by the Enlightenment.

Bristol So says Sora, the Japanese teen protagonist of "The Last Leaves Falling," as he decides to reject his doctor's offer to take advantage of a Make-A-Wish-type organization, even though he has ALS, and is slowly losing control of his facilities. An excellent student who dreams of one day becoming a professor, Sora has recently had to leave school, and spends his days at home. Lonely and longing to find peers who won't pity him or feel awkward around him, Sora begins to log into chat rooms frequented by teens and eventually forms friendships with two of them: Mai, a brilliant artist whose mother is adamant that she become a lawyer, and Kaito, who is a video game fanatic and later gets into web design (their talents are eventually pooled to create something amazing in the end that they share with others). Though surprised when they meet Sora in person, they are quick to stand by him, and their relationship grows and deepens - even as Sora's time as a functional person begins to run out.(Random side-note: I thought it was interesting that Sora's character was personified as a crane, as "sora" is actually the real name of a bird. Anyway...)This is a very G-rated book, except for one f-word, the language is squeaky clean, and there is no sex (or romance). There is a little drinking at the very end, but no stereotypical teen partying. However, Sora's final choice and act is anything but lightweight, and is sobering enough that I would only recommend this book to older kids - middle school and up. The relationship Sora has with his mother and grandparents is very sweet (perhaps a bit too so), and he is an admirable character. My one criticism is that the author didn't delve into the more personal regrets of Sora - we hear about what he wants to achieve as a career but not so much what he wants in terms of romance, something you'd think would be very much on the mind of a boy that age. But it is beautifully written nonetheless.

And this book is certainly thought-provoking. It will tug at your heart strings, make you think, and it will also make you feel a whole lot, so you should prepare tissues and expect all the feels.I went in expecting certain things and my expectations were overthrown because I got so much more.In just chapters, I cared more for Sora than I do for most characters at the end of a whole book. And this was after knowing him all of twenty minutes, which was plenty of time to fall in love with his character, his spirit and his bravery.The Last Leaves Falling doesn't shy away from tough subject matters and newcomer Benwell writes about them with grace. I'm a huge fan of this heartfelt, moving debut and cannot wait to read whatever the author releases next.If you decide to read it, which I hope you do, I would suggest the UK/red cover. Even though I love the US edition, I heard they’ve changed some things in the US edition and from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t best suit the book.

The Last Leaves Falling By Leeanna Chetsko Diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at seventeen, Abe Sora knows how the rest of his short life will go. He’s already lost the use of his legs, next will be his arms, and eventually he’ll be unable to do anything for himself, even breathe. Abe doesn’t want to be pitied, but he’s upset that he’s a burden to his mother. That he’ll never have the chance to grow old or even play baseball anymore.Not wanting to be seen as the poor boy in the wheelchair, Abe turns to the Internet for socialization. I loved this aspect of THE LAST LEAVES FALLING, because the Internet can be a great equalizer for people with any type of disability or disorder. No one knows that you’re disabled, or that you’re suffering from a chronic illness, or that you have social anxiety, etc. At first, Abe just watches other teenagers chat, but then two send him private messages. MonkECMonkEDo and NoFaceBoy become Abe’s lifelines, two friends who don’t know that he has ALS.And then Abe’s mom wants to meet the people he talks to online. Mai and Kaito are shocked to find Abe in a wheelchair, but they accept him, and become the best friends ever. I thought the friendship developed a bit quickly, but I liked how Mai and Kaito were there for Abe, to make sure his last days were as awesome and normal as possible. Abe’s mom and grandparents were also present in the book, and I liked that too, because they were just as supportive as his friends.As Abe gradually loses the use of his hands, the ending of the book is forecasted. I hope THE LAST LEAVES FALLING will encourage readers to think about quality of life, how able-bodied people think about disabilities, and what they might do in Abe’s situation.

Interesting & Insightful By Mary-Anne Pain is Really Strange does a great job of explaining the trick and complicated thing that pain is in a fun and interesting way. The illustrations do a wonderful job of helping clarify some very trick concepts. Pain is an overwhelming concept to try and understand. The book explained how to concept of pain and our understand of it has changed, starting with Aristotle and then moving to current time. The explanation of nerves and neuroplasticity and how this related to pain is well done. It's then built upon has how we can use neuroplasticity to our advantage when dealing with pain.As someone who has been living with chronic pain for over 13 years, I think that this book can be a fantastic resource. For those of us who live in pain, if you don't know about neuroplasticity or are looking for something a bit fun to read about pain for a change, this is a book for you. For those who live with someone or love someone who has chronic pain, this is a book for you! It will help you understand more about pain. I think this would be an especially great book for teenagers or young adults whose parents deal with chronic pain.I was lucky enough to receive a copy of the book. I've very glad I got to read it.

Medical professionals can use this to explain pain and it's many nuances to their patients.The book has great content. The colors, the printing, dark and light the small print.at the bottoms of some pages are difficult to read. Sometimes you just guess , or have someone else look at it for bbc you.

A great compilation of novellas and short stories available for new readers as well as for the fans without any difficulty.Suzanne really did a wonderful job to introduce the world of the Sentinels of new Orleans for those new to it and set a form of timeline for the ones who follow the series from the beginning. She mixed past pieces of work that were available as treat on her blog for a limited time, some updated, modified etc, with new stories very captivating and as a bonus some info about the universes and the characters so that this book is something new for all of us.Pirateship Down” This novella is the pure treasure of this kind of anthology, Pirateship Down is a real pearl when you have read the series but you should really be able to enjoy it without difficulty after haing read the “lagniappe” becaus ethat give you a big inside in the universe.For those who have read the series, you can see how this fit wonderfully and at the same time stays a pure treat as it doesn’t impact the next book ( in the sense that you won’t feel like you have missed something if you read the book and not the novella but really that would be too sad to miss this!)Jean Lafitte has decided to reclaim one of his ship which has been found in the waters of the sea... to do so he drag along his friend Rene and Dj which is still suffering from her last experience. Both friends know they can’t go against Jean but that they must keep him out of the troubles....with a proud determined pirate you can imagine how it won’t be easy . Full of humour this novella won’t leave you indifferent, this was a pure joy and full of laughing time for me so i can’t recommend it to you enough.If you love Jean or simply want to have a fun reading moment, read this novella!Suzanne really did us a big favor by creating this book we awaited so long as a treat to be patient until the release of the next book so don’t hesitate to grab this one and spread the word. By Caterina This read constitutes a collection of short stories and trivial information concerning Suzanne Johnson's Sentinels of New Orleans series!It was a fun and greatly entertaining read, very well-built by the author, so that it wouldn't be hard for someone who hasn't read any books in these series -someone like me -, to follow up.In more detail, the first short story "Talk Like a Pirate", mainly features 19-th century French Pirate Jean Lafitte and New Orleans Wizard Sentinel Gerry St. Simon. We get a first taste of the (in)famous pirate, and are able to see his interaction with the wizard before the series started.Next, we get "a little something extra", with a brief, but to the point, explanation of the Sentinels Multiverse, and its inhabitants! This is where you can find out more about the wizards, the fae, the merfolk, and even the elves!"Alex, The Pig" is a short story that features three of the protagonists of the Sentinels of New Orleans series, DJ, Alex and Rene. It is a short, fun read, about a small adventure that includes a certain cursed leprechaun!The next story, "Cat Mon Dieu" features a rather brief adventure of the pirate Jean Lafitte, in the Rouses Supermarket, and the chaos he just barely avoided causing!A few trivia is then offered about said pirate, for us to get a glimpse in his life before he was killed and became a historical undead livind in the Beyond!More information about Alex can be found on "Rivalry", a short featuring himself and his cousin when they were still teenagers, and around the time he had just started getting to know his shapeshifts. For everyone that has read the series, this short would actually prove to be very enlightening as to why he is who he is, and about the way he behaves!Both "Swamp Rats" and "Danger: Curves Ahead" featured DJ and Alex, giving us a glimpse of their relationship and how they interact with each other!Another extra follows, regarding the Sentinels Bibliography, before another story occurring between Alex and his cousin Jacob is provided!Last but not least, the novella with the same name as this collection, "Pirateship Down" is a quite an interesting read featuring DJ, Rene and their adventures trying to get Jean Lafitte out of the mess he has created for himself.All the stories, and especially the novella, are quick, witty and with lots and lots of humor! I actually caught myself not only chuckling, but also laughing out loud with DJ's narration. I loved the author's writing style, and the whole collection made me want to start the series as soon as I get them on my hands!All in all, 5 stars to a book that made me laugh more than any has succeeded in doing in a long long time!

By Book Goddess Pirateship Down is a fun filled collection of stories set in the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans. This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who has not yet read the series to get introduced to the cast of characters because you do not need to know the overall story arc to appreciate these stories. For established Sentinel fans, the tales provide more insight into your favorites, especially Jean LaFitte. The title novella features Jean at his troublesome, charismatic best in his attempt to reclaim one of his sunken ships. Grab your copy and be prepared to be entertained!

Nine of the ten current "reviews" are five star, and all are written on Jun 20th or 30th. Every one of the other products "reviewed" by those "reviewers" are also five stars. I wouldn't take this book if the author gave it to me for free, I wouldn't trust anything s/he has to say about anything. This sort of sham promotion is despicable and Amazon profits from and is complicit in it, and is therefore just as despicable.Not at all coincidentally the one actual honest review was written on 17 Jul and gives it only two stars.

And what the hell is a ROKO? Do you mean Roku? This didn't appear to be a one time misspelling, but a consistent usage of ROKO instead of correct brand of streaming product

Great for new SlingTV users By Cathy Juntura I've had a hard time trying to setup Netflix and some other services on my sling TV and I've tried a variety of other methods, but I must say that this ebook have been the best! All different guides are comprehensive and covers everything that's needed, and it's easy to follow. I've been able to setup Netflix and other streaming services on my sling TV using this, and I've had a great time watching shows on my TV thanks to this book! Recommended!

Adler A huge disappointment...a thin, random collection of dialogue snippets from the original series and some bits of trivia, all of which will be familiar to even occasional fans. This could have been so much richer and more fun. Plus, errors: misspelling Roddenberry and calling an episode "Balance of Power"--it's "Balance of Terror." I'm also very saddened that a similar review/comment I posted on startrek.com was taken down. Did I hurt someone's feelings, folks?

I am writing this to alert folks to be sure and read the list of compatible devices. I didn't. I saw "Kindle" and went ahead and ordered. As it turns out it is not compatible with my Kindle Paperwhite. I can read it with my PC app ONLY. Besides, now that I have it I would recommend that it be ordered as a print copy only. In my opinion it is best enjoyed as a booklet.

About the Author Since 1979, Beverly Serrell has been an exhibit and evaluation consultant with art, history, natural history, and science museums, as well as zoos and aquariums. Before then, she was head of a museum education department for eight years, and had shorter stints as a high school science teacher and a research lab technician. Serrell holds an MA in science teaching in informal settings and a BS in biology. In 1995, she was a guest scholar at The J. Paul Getty Museum and has received two National Science Foundation grants to conduct research on visitor behavior in museum exhibitions. She has been a frequent museum visitor all her life.

From the Author "Living Better With Hearing Loss" is a practical guide to the social, technical and emotional issues that people with hearing loss may confront. As the subtitle says, the book is a comprehensive guide to the personal and social issues a person with hearing loss faces: family life, work, making and keeping friends, finding support groups -- and yes, dating and sex. Chapter on hearing aids, on cochlear implants, on hearing devices like PSAP's (like a hearing aid, but cheaper), and on assistive devices go into detail about the technology and how to find what you need. Many experts offered help and clarification on these chapters and I hope the result is a comprehensive and readable compendium of current technology. The last chapters express my personal feelings about the need to change the way we think about hearing loss, how we treat it, and the way we talk about it. I expect some readers may skip here and there in the book, searching for the specific information they're in need of. Others have already told me they read it cover to cover in one sitting. Either approach is fine with me. I hope the book helps people come to terms with their own loss or that of others, and to recognize the importance of acknowledging and treating loss. I also hope it serves as a cautionary tale: protect your hearing! By far the largest cause of hearing loss is exposure to noise. Protection is easy, cheap, and invisible.

A Lipreading Mom Reads This Insightful Book in One Afternoon By Shanna Groves Katherine Bouton follows up her bestselling book Shouting Won't Help with this insightful read about everything related to hearing loss. The book first caught my eye because I learned that the author had mentioned my blog LipreadingMom.com. After reading throughout the afternoon, I found myself nodding and saying "I didn't know that" due to Bouton's well-researched and thought-provoking insight. Of course, my children had to tap my shoulder repeatedly to get my attention to look up from the book!The most interesting portion for me personally concerned if and how to disclose hearing loss to prospective employers. I am a proponent of disclosing such information to employers, and the book tackles this sensitive topic by presenting the author's personal experiences in the workforce along with others'. Also compelling were the statistics about hearing loss and how it relates to education, employment, and income. Again, the author approaches this topic with adequate research and kept her opinions quiet. The research spoke for itself.The latter part of the book discusses why few people use hearing devices or even disclose their hearing loss. The common theme was fear...fear of what employers would think or what friends or even strangers would say. The other disheartening part is most insurance companies and Medicare do not pay for hearing aids, yet these entities will pay for cochlear implants. Why should someone who is not a candidate for a cochlear implant but could benefit from hearing aids not have affordable access to them? That is where Bouton wisely touched upon advocacy efforts with organizations, such as the Hearing Loss Association of America, working to provide more affordable access to hearing assistive products and services.For someone who is new to hearing loss or has lived with it for a number of years, such as myself, Living Better with Hearing Loss is well worth a read.

Bouton writes in a clear, engaging, down-to-earth style that is a pleasure to read. Whether you are hard of hearing, have friends or relatives or coworkers who are, or have a job (nursing, social work, teaching etc) that brings you into contact with people who can't hear so well, this book will be both enlightening and helpful.
