When Alice Cooper's head starts telling you what to do, you probably shouldn't listen. Chaino Durante did. And this is his story.

Chaino Durante works at the worst fast food restaurant ever. He has the worst job in this fast food restaurant. And the worst life he possibly can. When he discovers a mysterious bag in the fryer, he takes it home. The bag contains the head of rock and roll icon Alice Cooper. This is unfortunate. What's more unfortunate is that Chaino gets the gun he's going to use to rob his workplace stuck in the head and the head stuck on his hand. A new weapon is formed. A weapon that lets Chaino rob his workplace and subvert the order of the world around him. A weapon that blasts holes in reality itself, which does not come without consequence. A no holds barred psychedelic cartoon in the tradition of Bill Plympton and Ralph Bakshi, with Pink Floyd's The Wall thrown in for good measure, Rock'n'Roll Headcase explores the ins and outs of expanding consciousness with a madness that never lets up.

By Amazon Customer ROCK N ROLL HEAD CASE is an action-packed, fun-filled story the whole family can enjoy!Haha! No. It’s not. But it IS a damned good Bizarro novella with a ton of hidden wonder, not too surprising considering the author is none other than Lee “The Neverendingwonder” Widener. Think of the Adult Swim cartoon, The Regular Show, but under a Takashe Miike, Ichi The Killer-style production. The story is classic Bizarro, plenty of dreamscape style weirdness with a touch of the old ultra-violence and gore, yet remarkable sophistication that can only come from life experience. The best example of that last is in the title and theme: Alice Cooper’s head. Most readers are too young to remember, but this was the Godfather of Shock Rock’s signature card. He carried a severed head around and tongue kissed the thing as part of his live performance. Hats off to Mr. Widener! Well played!Throughout the first third, there are plenty of hidden cameos of Alice Cooper lyrics, and part of the fun was spotting them. But as the initial brouhaha becomes more and more twisted, ROCK N ROLL HEAD CASE turns into a whip-snap rollercoaster ride stretching to epic proportions, with flying pirate ships and giants. The scariest, however, is Mr. Widener’s ability to home in on the signs of the times and incorporate them into his stories. In this case, it’s the political state of affairs of the U.S… yet he wrote this a year before Donald Trump became a political icon.Overall, the story is fantastic and the writing holds the direct and deliberate voice I’ve come to look forward to with Mr. Widener’s work. A few copy edit errors aside, this is a perfect example of classic Bizarro and well worth the read for us lost grownups who prefer to read our Saturday morning cartoons with gratuitous violence and necrophilia. Excellent choice!

By nanotear Rock'n'Roll Head Case is a foot-stomping Bizarro romp through the looney tunes mind of Oregonian author Lee Widener. Drawing from crime fiction, '60s comics, violent cartoons, and proto-metal culture, this is a short and manic trip. Protagonist Chaino Durante hates his fast food job. He ends up going postal, thanks to the gun grafted into his hand that fires from the mouth of Alice Cooper's head. Alice is a BAD influence on Durante, and the two head out on a spree that recalls James and the Giant Peach--if it was directed by Quentin Tarantino while on an ether binge. There are countless easter eggs that wink at classic Cooper songs and other classic rock nuggets, and the climax falls somewhere between Idiocracy, Rocky Horror, and Pacific Rim. You might not learn anything from reading this book, but you will smile, bang your head, and if all goes well, you might just walk off a cliff and land in a cool drink of water. If Zappa was alive, this book would be sitting on the back of his toilet. The perfect gift for all the dead babies in your life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. From "The Horror Fiction Review" By Christine You know those stories when they try to come up with the most outlandish, most outrageous, most improbably ridiculous situations, and then reality seems to decide to take it as a challenge? When South Park, The Simpsons, or Back to the Future are trying to do a satirical, parodic spoof? Except then, suddenly, it’s all too plausible?Admittedly, in Rock and Roll Head Case, the majority of what goes on – getting a weaponized disembodied Alice Cooper head stuck to the end of your arm, for instance … or meeting the little old woman who lives in a shoe but her kids are creepy carnivorous baby dolls … flying chairs, tea(bleep)ing giants, talking bananas – are, hopefully, a ways further beyond the realms of coming true.Still, the popular new political candidate Franken-ssembled out of various celebrity and insect/animal body parts, including Trump’s hair and JFK’s brain? That’s enough to give any sensible person the willies. Worse, compared to what we ARE looking at, Trump’s hair with JFK’s brain might be an improvement. Thankfully, the monstrosity rejected Palin’s brain …Anyway! So here’s a guy named Chaino Durante, who only meant to start off his day quitting and robbing the Nuclear Burger where he works. An odd find in the toxic fryer vat leads to him getting the aforementioned Alice Cooper head stuck on his arm, and his simple robbery attempt turns out to be only the start of a crazy crime spree / journey / adventure. When I was a kid and came down with a fever, I’d have these recurring weird dreams, body horror and transformations and inanimate objects turned horribly animate. Reading this book was kind of like that. It all makes a certain sense at the time, and only afterward, usually when trying to explain it to someone else, you’re all, “okay, I know how it sounds, just bear with me, huh?”By the time you get to the pirate ship and Wil Wheaton’s big toe …See what I mean? Try to explain it, try to sound normal, and you come off like a spokesperson for wraparound jackets with buckles up the back. It’s a fitting addition to the New Bizarro Author bibliography, a good example of a genre that really has to be experienced to be believed, and a non-pharmaceutical way to make your brain feel like a pretzel.

Mei, Lili, and Jun have just three weeks to complete their senior year project, a portable translation device they call the monstrosity machine, which runs on magic and mathematics. "We only need to prove the concept," Mei tells her friends. Jun wants more than a passing grade, however. She wants that shiny golden insignia on her graduation certificate that says she's graduated with honors. With that, she's guaranteed a job in the best magic shops in Shēn Xiù City. And ai-ya, she needs that job if she ever wants to save enough money to study at university in the faraway Phoenix Empire. But getting their monstrosity to work proves to be more complicated than Jun ever predicted.

The Ghost Dragon's Daughter: A Seventy Kingdoms Story, by Beth Bernobich

Review "The Ghost Dragon's Daughter is a classic "stepping out into adventure" story, with more twists and turns of classic tropes than the wonderful ghost dragon of the title has scales. There's magic and mathematics, spirit animals and science, and an intelligent young girl who is finding her path to university and love both longer and rockier than she'd expected. As in Bernobich's lovely River of Souls series, the characters are rich, the world building deft, and the prose a joy to read."   --Delia Sherman, author of The Freedom Maze"Science, spells, and spirit animals... This is exactly the lush worldbuilding and carefully crafted characterization readers saw in Bernobich's Fox & Phoenix, and the return ticket to this world was well worth the wait." --Lisa Mantchev, author of the Théâtre Illuminata series and STRICTLY NO ELEPHANTS

By Paul Magnan I confess, I have not read the other Seventy Kingdoms stories (the novel "Fox and Phoenix" and the short story "Pig, Crane, Fox"), but after reading "The Ghost Dragon's Daughter", I can't wait to catch up on what I have missed.Set in an alternate reality, three friends, Jun, Mei, and Lili, work feverishly to create a low-cost translation machine. At stake is a certificate of accomplishment from their school, which will open doors for their futures at prestigious universities and desired careers. Using magic, mathematical theory, and hardware equally, they experience setbacks which keep them scrambling against a looming deadline to present their creation to their class and demanding teacher. Within this stressful mixture are their burgeoning emotions, and Jun's (the MC) undeniable attraction to Mei, which puts everything they have done, all the sacrifices they have made, in jeopardy.Beth Bernobich is unlike other fantasy writers in that she fuses mathematics with magic, science with sorcery. This makes her stories all the more believable, and her characters show true emotions and motivations, endearing, messy, and sometimes tragic. There are no clichés or false steps here.It was a joy to read this story, and I am very much looking forward to Beth Bernobich's future work.

Epps If you (like the heroine) are a young lady of the Seven Kingdoms, you might use a dip pen and inkwell at school, or you might be so lucky as to have a portable calculor and stylus; but either way you had better be wary of staying out too late lest the queen’s watch demons get you. And you definitely need to finish that translating machine so you don’t flunk your exam...all of which might be more difficult if you fall in love with one of your girlfriends. This is a delightful story with lovely worldbuilding and some nicely unexpected twists. I’ll keep a look out for other things set in this universe.SAMPLE PARAGRAPHGschu is silent, but her presence hovers close. I sense the other spirit companions too—Mei’s Ning and Lili’s Biyu—all of them chattering in their private language. Then with a *ping,* their presence winks out, like snuffed candles, and it’s just me and Lili and Mei.***Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Full of Magic and Wonder By Cat Hellisen It's been quite a few years since I read Fox and Phoenix, but I loved being transported back to the world - a blend of Chinese magic and steampunk, modern living and ancient cheek by jowl. The Ghost Dragon's Daughter is a brief dip back into that world, and though the story is short, it is in a setting so full of magic and wonder, rich with ghosts, the smell of tea and sparks, spirit animals and Watch Demons that my only wish is that it could have been longer, especially to flesh out more of the building connection between Jun and the ghost dragon who helps her. It's a story of a girl trying to rise higher in her world, using her ability with both machinery and magic. It is a story about first loves, and acceptance, and as an insight into the kinds of stories Bernobich writes, a lovely place to start if you are unfamiliar with her longer works.

Although I have been in program since 2012 and had almost 2 years of wonderful, serene abstinence, I relapsed approximately 1.5 years ago and have been in and out of the hell of compulsive eating since. I first found the e-book for Kindle and began reading it. That led me to download the print version from the website, which includes many excellent forms for use in working through the Step Four inventory. In combination with listening to a well-known AA workshop with "Joe and Charlie," this study guide is helping me gain a much deeper understanding of my true condition as a compulsive overeater and to solidify my understanding of working the Steps as outlined in the AA "Big Book." I now have a few days of abstinence behind me and a much greater hope that I can look forward to many more, taking it one day at a time with the help of my Higher Power. I am reviewing Steps One, Two, and Three in preparation for completing my inventory with the assistance of my sponsor. I see so much clearer now that the 12 Steps are quite simple and they are put down in a particular order for a very specific purpose: that I may recover from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors.

By Mandy A I like the content of this book, but the formatting for kindle is all messed up (paragraphs that end abruptly and then continue inserted into a strange place a page later, etc.) After I purchased it, I found out that there is a free downloadable PDF version of this available online, which is beautifully formatted and easy to read. I will likely never open this version again.

He’s always doing his best to protect all the other kings, while they all find their mates, or just cause trouble. Love, love, love Rhi, and don’t think we’ll ever find out who her dragon lover was. AND, as always, trying to figure out if Ulrik is good or evil.I love Thorn and Lexi, (as well as Darius.) LOL, and it’s nothing for the two of them to kill 80 or 100 Dark Fae a night, while doing all they can to protect the humans and keep themselves hidden from the humans.Part 2 I’m not so sure about Ulrik (even though he said Con would have to die for what he did) but I KNOW I hate his uncle Mikkel. What a total self-centered, murderous ass he is. I can’t wait for him to die. I also hate Balladyn and Taraeth. I’d like to say I wish the dragons would crush them all but then the war would be over and that’s half the fun of reading these books. Besides, the Kings get such joy out of killing the Dark a hundred at a time. Can’t take their fun away from them.Part 3I’m getting more and more upset with Rhi. If she’s going to turn dark I’ll have to be done with this series. And I’m leaning towards Ulrik being evil. His thoughts are just not sounding like a good guy. I wish Rhi had killed him when she had him on the floor.Anyway, the story got better and better and I couldn’t wait to get to part 4 after what happened in the shop at Draegan. It was exciting and terrible at the same time.Part 4When the 4th book came to an end I was sooo miserable. It did tell Thorn and Lexi’s story but, as usual, it left so many unanswered questions. I can hardly wait to read more about the Reapers, about Cael and Daire. That was some kind of ending between Darius and Sophie. Whew!

By Carol Passion Ignites: Part 2 (Dark Kings #7) by Donna Grant was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and by Donna Grant.Lexi is definitely having a hard time of it. She’s been sick with a serious case of the flu which Thorn has nursed her through. She is just regaining her strength. The longer Thorn is around her, the more he knows he must let her go. She already knows too much with all she has learned about the dark fey. While Thorn is away, Lexi gets Darius to give her some more answers to the world she never knew existed within her own. A chance sighting out of the window gives her even more questions as to what Darius and Thorn are. Lexi being Lexi, she follows them and gets the shock of a lifetime!“Dragons, My God, Darius and Thorn were dragons!”Again, Lexi ends up seriously injured. Thorn knows now more than ever, he has to send Lexi home to South Carolina, away from this madness.“I’m not some dog to be ordered around.”“Nay, you’re a human who has stepped into a war she has no business knowing about.”I love the Scottish brogue of Darius and Thorn and while I’m reading it I use the accent in my head. It makes them seem even sexier. The pending war against the dark fey is becoming more and more imminent. Two kings in the city is just not getting the job done. They are going to need help. Thorn’s priority, though, is to get Lexi safely home. He doesn’t know why she is able to somehow guard herself against the pull of the dark fey but she is still a weak human.Things are getting more suspenseful and I can’t wait to see what happens in part 3.

Passion Ignites p2 By Evampire Thorn exposes himself to his fiercest enemy by saving the tempting mortal and as the war heats up so does the heat between Lexi and Thorn in this captivating installment of the Passion Ignites serial. The romance is starting to heat up between Thorn and Lexi as Thorn cares for Lexi during her illness and the reader can’t help but continue to be enthralled with their story as they await to find out the outcome of their desire. The danger is escalating and fierce battles are happening which adds adrenaline pumping tension throughout the story while other characters add to the spine tingling excitement as their parts in the war continue to escalate.Wow! What a cliffhanger as I do believe things are about to get a whole lot worse for Thorn after the stunt he just pulled and I can’t wait to find out just what Lexi’s going to do next.4 ½ STARS

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Suited for both newcomers as veterans By Yannick De Turck I'm one of the technical reviewers of this book. The book is very well suited for both newcomers to the Play Framework as veterans. The first chapters contain recipes of many basic features of the framework while later chapters are about more advanced topics and integrating your web application with other popular frameworks and tools. Each recipe contains a brief introduction and is explained step by step with screenshots and code samples both in Java and Scala so you can follow the version depending on your own preference. At the end of each recipe a summary is available with extra information about the different steps and the end result. The basic recipes deal with core features of the Play Framework such as working with modules, routing, form validation, serving JSON and testing. More advanced recipes deal with creating your own plugins and modules and utilizing third party modules. There’s a chapter that deals with designing and setting up Web API's while other chapters contain recipes explaining you how to integrate your web application with tools and frameworks such as AngularJS, ElasticSearch, Travis CI and message queues. There's also a chapter dedicated to deploying your web application on your own personal server with Nginx, Docker or Dokku or in the Cloud via Digital Ocean, Heroku or AWS.I'm happy having gotten the opportunity to work on this book and I'm very well pleased with the result. I believe this book is a great asset to any Play developer!

I had to spend more time searching online for concepts the book doesn't explain and why its buggy code wasn't compiling than actually doing productive learning. As an example, in the section "Using a form template and web action", the source code examples spontaneously introduced an implicit flashing parameter to the view and an implicit request to the controller, with not even the slightest mention in the text. More importantly, the magic of how form submission errors are distinguished successes are never explained. Other than the multitude of buggy source code in the section, this tiny paragraph is the only explanatory text:```How it works...In this recipe, we were able to create our first HTTP form using Play Framework. This recipe included steps in creating an HTML form view template and our Products controller. We declared two web actions and two URL routes and created the Play form object, which we used to bind request parameters to our model, Fruit. We were able to load the web form by accessing http://localhost:9000/Products/new on a web browser. After filling out our form details, we submitted the form itself and received a notification from the Products controller.```(Even this tiny paragraph couldn't be without typos: there is no model Fruit in the chapter.)

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. An unusual and moving romance By Danker Don't be put off by the beefcake cover, which is yet another example of an author being let down by an image that in no way reflects the story inside - essentially, this is a story dominated by the experiences of the h (Calista), and, gorgeous though the H (Tacitus) is, it is ridiculous misinterpretation to market the book wth a naked male torso. This story flutters on the edge of quirky, with its depiction of a h reliving one day in an altered universe, a theme that would usually leave me cold. I was, instead, intrigued and even engrossed in the story of two star-crossed lovers, who meet by chance in a country inn, only to be faced with the chance to reconnect and to finally understand what went wrong so many years ago.Again My Lord is sometimes painfully sad, but Ashe delivers not only tragedy but also the means for Calista to finally understand her own character and how her decisions could have been so misinterpreted by Tacitus. And for him to understand how he let her down and why his final trust in her is so important. The repetitive nature of this book is essential to the unpeeling of the story and, yet, could have been boring. But it isn't. Instead, the reliving of that one day becomes more and more fascinating as more is revealed. When most HRs are now so derivative, what a relief it is to read something different. Pity that the cover sells Ashe short and gives such a wrong impression of an unusual and moving romance.I did NOT receive a free copy of this book. I paid for it and consider it well worth its very reasonable price.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. No Spoilers here. What a page turner! The most intriguing book that I have read in a very long time. By Cathy Rackowski Katharine Ashe has written her second book in the Twist Series and it is a fantastic edge of your seat read. The great thing about this book in this series is that it is an absolute standalone! The premise is so different and refreshing for this genre that it was the most interesting page turner I have read in a very long time. (And I read a lot of historical romance novels!)This is the story of two people who had two very distinct agendas in finding a mate when they first met. Those agendas in turn became the obstacles they could not get past or which blinded them while they were falling in love with one another. But fall in love they did, and it’s how they came to acknowledge that love is the key to this story.Tacitus is a man on a mission to not be hurt in love again. He is on the hunt for a bride to set up his nursery. He adored his parents and the loss of them crippled him in his thinking of what he wanted in a life partner. His thoughts turned to being anything opposite to what his parents were was what he wanted. In other words, a woman with good teeth, respectable, and worthy of him would do just fine. His parents were very much in love with each other and him so that was a negative and not to be considered.Calista was in a dire situation with a father only thinking about his own failures and how he could recoup money lost on gambling. This is the man contracting her life partner (selling would be a better word) with no thought of his daughters true well being. That man is despicable and brutal from the start; she desperately needs to escape this situation. It just so happens she meets Tacitus falls in love with him but doesn’t have the maturity to tell him what is really going on in her life or giving him a chance to say what was on his mind. This is the story of how under very strange conditions, these two people come together and learn to trust one another, love one another unconditionally, and learn that living in the moment with love and purpose is the most important thing there is in life.It is truly difficult to not give away the fantastic twists in this story you will want to be surprised, trust me on this. Just know that when you start reading you think this is Tacitus’s story, and then it seems to be mostly Calista’s story. In the end it is both of their stories told in the most unique way I have seen in a very long time…. If not ever!I hope you take a chance and give this book a try, I can’t imagine anyone not being glad they did…. Enjoy now~

By Airbecca8 Again, My Lord is the second in Katharine Ashe's Twist series and it is every bit as lovely as the first. This tale opens with a young Calista missing her chance at love. She makes a mistake and misjudges a situation, causing her to be separated from the man she loves and instead wed to a monster. After six long years, fate and a mischievous goddess give her as many chances as she needs to finally get it right. While the prologue is about the Marquess of Dare, the rest of the story is without a doubt about Calista. Through her eyes and heart, we experience a broad spectrum of situations, people, and emotions. Through Calista we examine every facet of a single period of time and are reminded to live in the present, pay more attention to others, and be open to the wonderful opportunities that can come our way each and every day.Again, My Lord is brilliant and refreshing, even though we keep reliving the same scene with Calista. With each mistake that Calista makes, we learn more about her, about the marquess, and about each and every resident in the small town she is trapped in. With each new discovery that Calista has, we feel a surge of hope or sadness as we slowly see the reasons that people behave the way they do. And with each encounter that Calista has with Dare, we see why she fell in love with him and ache with the same pain she bears at never truly being his.The romance in this story is profound and heart-wrenching because Calista has to rebuild her relationship with Dare every single day. Every day the love she has grows, while Dare begins each day a clean slate. And yet, despite each day being the same, Calista constantly experiences something different. Her encounters with Dare are sensual and intense, slowly breaking her heart because they will not be the same tomorrow. But despite the agony, Calista reaches out for another chance again and again, slowly making changes to her day to make it better not just for herself, but for every life she touches, hoping that one day, everything will finally be perfect.I loved this book. In this self-published series, Ashe is free. She writes exactly what she wants and you can tell. The storytelling is brilliant, the characters are exquisitely drawn, and the romance is breathtaking. When I read the last line before the epilogue, I thought "perfect." I knew everything about Calista, and through her, I knew everything about each person she touched. And I experienced the same joy, compassion, longing, and love. I will be reading this again and again and again :)This is why I read romance.

For the first time in generations, Africa is spoken of these days with enthusiastic hope: no longer seen as a hopeless morass of poverty, the continent instead is described as “Africa Rising,” a land of enormous economic potential that is just beginning to be tapped. With Africa: Why Economists Get It Wrong, Morten Jerven offers a bracing corrective. Neither story, he shows, is accurate. In truth, most African economies have been growing rapidly since the 1990s—and, until a collapse in the ’70s and ’80s, they had been growing reliably for decades. Puncturing weak analysis that relies too much on those two lost decades, Jerven redraws our picture of Africa’s past, present, and potential.

Africa: Why Economists Get It Wrong (African Arguments), by Morten Jerven

Review "Excellent. . . . [Jerven’s] points are elegantly argued and although he delves into extremely technical economic concepts and methods, Africa: Why Economists Get It Wrong is readable and easy for a nonspecialist to understand. But specialists in particular must read Jerven, and take seriously his claims." (Laura Seay and Kim Yi Dionne Washington Post)“[Jerven] demolishes much of the best-known work by prominent economists who very clearly do get it wrong and in so doing promote a false and unfortunate impression of Africa as failed economically. . . . Everyone interested in Africa or in the great mysteries of how to understand economic growth can benefit from this excellent book. Essential.” (Choice)

An insightful book on how African economic statistics have problems and how narratives built on them are dubious By sien Africa : Why Economists Get it Wrong (2015) by Morten Jerven is a very interesting book on how economists have misused dubious statistics on Africa and erroneously constructed a narrative on how African development has failed. Books on Africa such as Paul Collier's The Bottom Billion and William Easterly's The Elusive Quest for Growth are built on very shaky foundations according to Jerven.Jerven is an economic historian with a PhD from the LSE and wrote the highly acclaimed book Wrong Numbers that seems to cover much of the ground that this book does.Jerven describes how economic growth is misunderstood because good African statistics often start in 1960 and are not very strong and because low commodity prices and other factors, possibly HIV and some very poor governments led Africa to have low growth in the 1980s and the 1990s which was then declared as normal despite it effectively being two poor decades. The book also makes the point that if growth from 1960 to 1990 is divided into two 15 year sections Africa does fairly well in each, only huge growth in the 1975 to 1990 era by South and East Asia making Africa not look particularly good. It's curious here that for a book written in 2015 that the statistics stop in 1990.Jerven then looks at how poor statistics are compressed and combined to present a picture of poor growth in Africa in the pre-colonial era. This also includes some asides into how The Economist and other news magazines have declared Africa lost and then doing well in the space of two or three years. He also points out how a number of the explanations for growth successes may be post fact rationalizations. The idea that growth and wealth might bring in good institutions rather than the other way around is very interesting. The book also describes the big problems with modern African statistics in more detail. Due to low populations, low wealth and statistical tools designed to measure wealthy countries economies the accuracy of African statistics is very questionable. A number of African states have errors that are huge, in the order of 1/3 or more of the GDP per capita when comparing across different statistical agencies. This indicates huge inconsistencies and problems. Also rebasing is not done frequently enough and when it is done tends to have such a big effect that it overshadows actual economic changes. The book concludes that poor numbers and dubious explanations have combined to create poor economic studies of Africa. The differences within Africa and the relative lack of wealth may have caused economists to make considerable errors. Jerven asserts that there is no Bottom Billion and that development stories have been driven by narrative fallacies based on quicksand. It's a really interesting idea and even if wrong the book is definitely worth reading.

Jerven demolishes the shoddy and incompetent statistics used by mainstream economists for analyzing Africa By Epictetus (Hong Kong) Jerven argues that most of the mainstream economists have made several mistakes when analyzing Africa. They: 1.   begin with the assumption that country characteristics on the one hand and indicators of development levels on the other are causally related. This is a gigantic mistake. 2.  fail to question the quality of data, and instead focus on the details of statistical process. 3.  fail to question the quality and relevance of proxies used in economic analysis.4.  fail to address the problem of missing data, things that are uncounted  or unrecorded.5.  in the case of many analyses,  begin in 1960. While sometimes allowance is made for this, the arbitrary starting point inevitably shapes what questions are asked, and influences or determines what questions are not. 6.  have in many cases been distorted either by the "African dummy variable", or by the search for it, which was ultimately futile.7.  begin with the assumption that there has been no growth, instead of finding evidence for this belief.8.  make unwarranted use of subjective and fabricated variables such as the "black market premium variable". 9. fail to make proper use of the discipline of economic history.Jerven comments that “It is quite obvious that not all that can be counted counts and not all that counts is counted. But the impact of missing data on scholarly analysis is not usually appreciate it fully.”Jerven demolishes the statistical credibility of the various attempts to show that slavery or some other historical factor explains the African problem — quite apart from the fact, as he sees it, that there is no such thing as an African problem. For example, one study that tried to prove that past slavery is the main cause of current problems in Africa took as an assumption the set of the ten the poorest countries in Africa. However there is little consensus across the leading major sets of statistical data as to which African countries are poor and which are rich. This is an example of a broader problem in African data of the high variability of income. One cause of the high variability is the high proportion of wealth that is agricultural, and therefore depends on the vagaries of the weather and the harvest and the market.Jervon’s conclusions:“The solution is to refocus the study of economics on the study of economics. The increasing distance between the observers and the observed has created a growing knowledge problem …. The toolbox of economists is conceptually Eurocentric.... The bottom line is that there is no ‘bottom billion’”.

Attacks some popular analyses of Africa but offers little to replace them By Andrew Batson I came to this book hoping to get a better understanding of what's going on in African economies and how they are doing; maybe that was the wrong expectation, but that's not what I got. About three-quarters of the book seems to be arguing that Africa is doing better than than many people thought, as it criticizes a whole swathe of economic research about a supposed “chronic failure of growth” in Africa. I am very sympathetic to these criticisms, but even after accepting his arguments it’s not clear that we are left with a very positive growth picture for Africa. In the last quarter of the book Jerven then switches to arguing that Africa is in fact doing worse than some people think. He reviews some of his previous work on African GDP statistics to tackle the opposite side of the growth stagnation argument, and argues that the optimistic “Africa Rising” story of recent years is also overwrought and undersupported.Unfortunately, Jerven does not spend much time building up a new narrative about Africa to replace the two that he demolishes. So non-specialist readers like myself are left unsure as to what the real picture is. On the whole I felt that too much of the book is devoted to internecine academic warfare, with the author attacking the theories of his opponents, and not enough to developing a coherent narrative about African economic development for the general reader.

Slow start, engrossing story, completely satisfying conclusion By Stargeezer First, I give it 4 stars only because very few things in this world ever rate 5 stars. When I was part way thru, I realized why it had been difficult to get started. I had a little Deja Vu back to when I first read "Dune" by Frank Herbert. While the stories have no relation whatsoever, they both introduce a brand new universe with new concepts, intrigues, its own vernacular, and you are dropped into a story moving forward with no idea what's transpiring, or why its all happening. So you are first trying to learn a new thought process unique to understanding the story, while also trying to catch up on what appears to be a story with an untold past, as well as the relationship of all the characters, and learning the whole new Universe. But eventually, the past story is told when it needs to be, and like anyone one dropped into a brand new job, you do your on-job training and pretty soon, all the concepts fall into place and you start looking forward to the next twist or turn.I read a lot of books, and I have never NOT finished one. Sometimes, I just want to get to the end just to find out if I wasted my time. Sometimes, its an interesting story, but when its done, that's all it was -- an interesting story. Sometimes, I don't want to put it down, can't wait to pick it up again, and miss the characters, the story, and the world when it is done because the author made me care about them all, and I wonder what they are doing today. THAT is "A Choice of Treasons".Slowly we see the main character, York, in not only a different light, but light that keeps changing intensity, focus and direction. I am not only amazed that the author was able to keep track of everything, and where it was all leading, but how many new and different challenges were provided to both the characters and the reader, and none of threads was lost, left unexplained, or came to disappointing conclusions. And he did all this without the supposition that the readers will know how it all works just cuz we've seen Star Trek and Star Wars.Although I don't write book reviews and don't know what is SUPPOSED to be said, I have come here to write review because I really, really enjoyed reading this book and think the author deserves a large following. If the first reviewer is right, I look forward to his future publications. It is books like this that will help us all avoid the Agency 6 publishers until they, too, learn how to properly price an ebook.

I am no science expert so I can't comment on the accuracy of the technology but wonder of wonders I could follow it! There is enough tech to satisfy(I hope)any science guru while not overloading us laymans.Ah, I loved the main character/hero. Even being the hero he is human & flawed, and doesn't escape unscathed, after all it is war. I loved to hate the nastier characters & the well horrible things they did. I haven't been this anxious while reading in a long while, this book held me from the first page, I rarely give 5 stars but this book very much deserves it.I hope there will be more bks based in this universe but I recommend anything by this author-I've read The Thirteenth man, Child of the sword, & soon When dead ain't dead enough, which were just as wonderful! A huge Thank you to the author can't wait for the next great read!

Good read but horrendous editing By JamesB I actually liked the book and would have given it four or five stars because of the action, twists, and the inventiveness, IF I could actually be sure what was going on. My big bugbear was the editing. Very often the Point of View and characters in the scene itelf, as well as the location would change from one line to the next without any warning whatsoever. Most authors would either start a new chapter, put a string of anything meaningless in the way to show that the scene had changed, or even left three lines or so of space. Not here. Straight on with the story without a break. This meant I had to continually reread to establish where I was. Very annoying. Get a line editor! (NB read on my laptop)
