This is a great resource that I have been using in small guided reading groups to teach close reading and text coding or marking. Each passage focuses on specific skills for the text marking such as Main Idea, Compare/Contrast, and Cause and Effect. The questions that go along with the text reinforces vocabulary, using context clues, and other additional "evidence based" skills. The passages are challenging but grade appropriate. I have shared it with others who are enjoy using it too. I highly recommend this book.

Some of the background information required for understanding is st too high of a levelfor grade level understanding.

Amazon.com Review Written more in the vein of Anne Rice's well-known vampire series than the traditional vampire romance (if such a thing exists), this second book in Linda Lael Miller's vampire quartet takes place in a setting inhabited by angels, warlocks, vampires, and mortals, all very literally at each others' throats.

Powerful vampire Maeve Tremayne revels in her immortality. Free to travel at will through time and place, she is restricted only by the rising of the sun. Just and honest, she takes nourishment only from the cruelest members of mortal society, those who are "truly evil, not just misguided," except when she eases the journey of the dying by offering them a final moment of ecstasy and release from pain. During one of these missions of mercy to the dying soldiers in a Civil War field hospital, she meets Dr. Calder Holbrook. Calder has heard the tales of a beautiful angel who roams the battlefield and takes the dying to their rest, but he believed she was only a morphine-fueled dream of men in pain until he sees her for himself. Maeve tries to put the mortal doctor out of her mind. Her brother loved a mortal and gave up his immortality for her, condemning himself to an eventual human death; she refuses to follow his example. Her attraction to Calder is too strong, however, and she finds herself drawn back to his time--and eventually into his arms. Unfortunately, complications arise that threaten the growing relationship between Maeve and Calder. Maeve finds herself the reluctant champion of her kind when she is called upon to track down and destroy the mad vampire queen, Lisette, whose depravity threatens to bring down the wrath of the warrior angels on all immortals--vampires and warlocks alike. Maeve must strike an alliance with the enemy warlocks for their mutual protection and garner their help for her battle with Lisette. Calder, who has demons of his own past to battle, chafes at Maeve's protectiveness, which threatens to drive a wedge between them.

Linda Lael Miller's For All Eternity succeeds as an intriguing story on two levels, both as a sensual, otherworldly romance and as an intense and dramatic battle of wits between two powerful and vastly different creatures of the night.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I Cheered For The Vampires By Angela Hanley An excellent vampire story. Very creative and powerful characters. Linda Lael Miller did such a good job in describing her characters that I felt like I knew them so well. I loved Dathan's character with all his arrogance and sex appeal. Dimity was another character that I fell in love with and would like to get to know better. I would love to see Mrs. Miller come out with a book about that female vampire. Oooo, what a story that could be!My only disappointment with the book was the love story line between Maeve; the main character and a female vampire and Calder; a mortal man. I found Calder's character to be weak and quite boring actually. The love story really got in the way of the exciting vampire story line. I noticed myself skimming quickly over the love story parts involving Calder and Maeve just so that I could get back into the great vampire stuff. I must admit though; I LOVED the vampire sex passages...very erotic!This is a definite must read for all ! vampire fans.

The love story that develops between Maeve and Calder pales in contrast to the gripping scope of the deadly struggle between the forces of good and evil. I especially liked the scenes between Nemesis & Maeve--two very strong-willed characters. Ms. Miller has a beautiful way with words and a great imagination!

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your time. By A Customer Friends of Ms. Miller must be writing these reviews because I found nothing to enjoy about this book. I was looking in particular for a good vampire book and could not believe that this level of writing was considered excellent by all of you. I'm beginning to think we need some other way to catagorize this type of writing. I for one did not find the plot enthralling or even interesting because the writing level was too elementary. She gets 2 stars for getting published. That was truly an accomplishment. Sorry, just being honest to those who really want to know.

By Rob Davis One of the most remarkable examples of an author utilizing both narrative and visual art combined in such a way as to lead the reader into an alternative vision of human life, its origins and latent possibilities, all in the context of a richly populated universe where cross cultural exchange occurs at levels difficult to imagine, but made more transparently beautiful because of this work.Any whose spiritual imagination has led them to wonder about cosmic dimensions of intellectual and spiritual cross fertilization should read this tale of adventure by a band of space gypsies, a race of poets forced to flee their planetary home and become students of the many civilizations found along the way to realizing the aspiration of bequeathing their assembled lore to unsuspecting recipients on a backward and confused world such as this one.

An Intriguing Tale By Miriam Knight This is a book to be experienced and savored along multiple dimensions – the visual, the intellectual, and one I would call the timeless. Indeed one’s sense of time melds with the narrative and takes on a whole different rhythm; time is measured in eons as it carries one's imagination gracefully through successive waves of creation and evolution.The story is told across two-page spreads in this sumptuously rendered large-format edition. On the right side of each spread is an illustration – beautifully rendered, sinuous, almost psychedelic - upon which the author has penned an often-amusing encapsulation of events. On the facing page is the detailed narrative, which takes the reader through the annals of cosmic history, using the Helianx as protagonists.The Helianx are a fascinating cultural invention, being vast creatures who are so successful in living in harmony within their environment – feeding off cosmic energy and regulating their procreation to keep their population stable – that they are able to spend the eons in contemplation, creating poetry and song, and observing other civilizations through their telepathic abilities, and later through direct contact during their nomadic travels across the universes, and recording their cultures.As they assimilate all this wisdom, they look for a way to preserve it for eternity, and thereby hangs the tale.While this is the author's first fictional book, it incorporates themes and stories about the celestial hierarchy found in his earlier writings, including the Rebel Angels series, as well is as in such diverse sources as the Urantia book, the Bible, and the work of Zechariah Sitchin. It is delightful as a cosmic fable, yet also very intriguing as a colorful backstory to the creation myth most of us learned in childhood. By Mark Howell "The Helianx Proposition" is a fabulous book, by which I mean it's right up there with the great fables of the world and the wonderful art they spawned, from Rumi through William Blake, even up to and beyond the Brothers Grimm. This book will surprise you because it is full of surprises, artistic and intellectual. I can do no better in praise than to quote Blake himself, who famously pointed out: "Eternity is in love with the productions of time." All hail, eternity, and all hail to those who sail in or even rethink her! Nobody today does this kind of book better today than Timothy Wylie.

Great book with in-depth analyses By Tiffany This book is a must read for a widespread understanding about the terrorist and insurgent groups past and present around the world. Each chapter is well written and organized into small sections by topic, making it concise and easy to follow all the different aspects. It provides a case-by-case analysis on 7 different organizations located in various regions covering now defunct groups like PIRA to ISIS, who is currently and rapidly gaining ground to provide a historical perspective about how they have changed over time. By covering different funding operations and organizational networks of each group, it provides in- depth analyses of what goes on in the groups and how some of them are still going strong with widespread support. In light of US involvement in the global war on terror, it seeks to look at the issue from a different viewpoint. It looks at how to dismantle organizations from the inside and cease their operations in addition to fighting them from the frontlines.

The book provides insight on ISIS funding and operations as well has the funding streams of criminal organizations and terrorists throughout history. Mr. Clarke offers counter-terrorism techniques to terminate criminal organizations throughout the world. This book should be a requirement for all world leaders.

Each chapter is consistent in the organization of information and is detailed without being overly verbose. There is an impressive amount of in-depth analysis on 7 different terrorist organizations in various regions of the world. The book differentiates terrorist activities as either part of the grey economy and dark economy and gives readers a clearer understanding of the financial and organizational activities that these terrorist groups undertake to continue their operations. A must-read for anyone interested in the inner workings of the financing of terrorism!

Good insights into Eastern Indonesia By Sean The book does provides some interesting insights into Eastern Indonesia which is very rarely written about. I find the absolutes a bit simplistic - example shallow rich ('air-kissing') Jakartas versus poor earnest villagers (read the real Indonesian). Also the 'old' Jakarta has not disappeared at all, although the number and range of street sellers have definitely declined as mini markets and malls proliferate. Ms Pisani is heavy on adjectives which does bring to life the country in all its senses, but sometimes she tries a little too hard. 'A Moulin Rouge of flayed buffalo legs' is just plain silly. Also as a long term Jakarta resident, I note some inaccuracies. Page 29 - refers to the extortion of hotel guests to get them out of flooded waters in laundry bins. That is unfair. I was there on that fateful Saturday morning when an adjacent reservoir overflowed and flooded the then Regent Hotel (now Four Seasons). The hotel staff were fantastic, and I did not witness any attempts to extort the guests...

Schneider A gutsy and witty travel book written by an English woman, a former journalist and public health worker.She travels through the backwoods and centers of Indonesia. Years of inside knowledge, personal contacts, language skills, historical, social, and political insights go into the narrative. Memories from earlier trips add a time axis to the trip.I recommend the book. The agenda is determined by a healthy skepticism against religions and politicians, by a commitment to conservation causes, and by sympathies for the underdogs. I assume the book is most valuable to people who have some knowledge of Indonesia. It is not an introduction for novices.For the question that moves most people (which role will political Islam play in the future of the country?), the book gives information that can improve our understanding. The author is not an alarmist, but she is not crazy enough to deal in prophecies. On key environmental issues like deforestation, she is not optimistic.Many chapters about different parts of the country touch the subject of past outbreaks of violence, be it between religious or ethnic groups, or the big outbreak of murder lust in the 1960s. A subject with many explanations, but beyond comprehension.

By John A This is really a fabulous book, not to be missed by anyone who has visited Indonesia -- or anywhere else for that matter. I've never been, and now cannot wait to visit. But only if the author agrees to accompany me. My treat! I'm such a lousy tourist that I'm sure I'd be better off reading this book rather than heading out as she did, via rickety boat and motorbike.Elizabeth Pisani is an incredible guide, enough outside of the myriad cultures of Indonesia to observe clearly, but obviously deeply in love with what she calls her "bad boyfriend." I would travel with her anytime, anywhere. She is also an excellent writer; every page was a joy, like wandering a great city and just letting your feet take you to places of surprise and delight.I've been all over the world, and spend about half of every year in Asia and Africa at this point. Due to my work, I spend far too much time in 3-star hotels, boring restaurants and official meeting rooms. Pisani reminds us that just a few steps outside of the circles navigated by tourists and business travelers exists a whole world of wonders. Reward yourself, and read this book.

Zubarev In recent years I witness an explosion in at least the interest in Functional Programming languages and a possible (hard to measure) spur in their use. In my view, they are worth exploring. Perhaps more than worth, a must. Since each FP language was built to tackle a specific purpose naturally, every one has its own niche applications, many strong and a several weak points. Erlang is one of them. In short, and to the point - Erlang's syntax is notoriously hard. Elixir was created where Erlang was left off - tackling the syntax and tooling woes. Also Elixir feels like an extension to Erlang. But allows a dramatic boost to productivity of a developer. Speaking of the developer, written by a programmer to a programmer who is Saša Jurić makes it a win-win for anyone embracing Functional Programming and not only Elixir. This book is probably the gentlest introduction to Elixir and the Functional Programming altogether. It walks you through the very basics and not so intricacies of Elixir towards building the real world project. Step by step, with tasteful, even timely repetitions of what you learned in the past chapters so you do not need to frantically go in reverse in the book flipping pages or Ctrl-Fing. The book has a wast number of code samples, neat annotations and a through index (*important for those using books).In terms of my closing words, a very worth your reading material, the Elixir online community is also strong and growing, I am watching how it all unfolds, in the meanwhile it is a 5 out 5. Another good book from Manning. Also thanks to Saša Jurić.

The writing is clear By Steven Leiva Out of the number of different blogs, tutorials, docs, and books that I have read, this one is simply the best.The writing is clear, concepts are introduced at just the right time, and each chapter adds just enough complexity from the previous one to keep you on your toes, but not to drown you in detail.Can't praise this highly enough!

A practical introduction to elixir that enables you to utilize the amazing power of the Erlang language By Al Rahimi Erlang for years has been used to develop highly available massively distributed/concurrent fault tolerant systems. Swedish telecome written mostly in Erlang and WhatsApp are testimony to the power of that language. Despite that Erlang has not gained widespread acceptance for developing concurrent systems .The main reason for this is it's unfamiliar syntax and and very unusual style of programing (pattern matching). That is where Elixir comes in to provide a language based on Erlang and running on Erlang VM with a syntax similar to functional languages like ruby and python while at the same time exposing all the powerful feature of the language (specially the actor model of concurrency).Elixir in Action skillfully introduces the reader to all the complexities and beauties of the language and at the same time tries to introduce the reader to the concepts of concurrency oriented programming and the amazing world of actors which allows the programmer to write massively distributed concurrent programs without ever dealing with locks,semaphore and all the other convoluted aspects of conventional multi-threaded programming.The book is not without fault though. For example the presentation on abstraction (encapsulation,polymorphism,etc) could have been made simpler and clearer by avoiding the overuse of the term abstraction and instead introducing each of these concepts (user defined types,encapsulation using modules, polymorphism using protocols and other features of the language. Despite these I recommend this book for learning the basics of the elixir and as a stepping stone to more advanced books.

[[VIDEOID:a61b4b7382e94a85b3a11da33ebf4c55]]INCREASE DECREASE is the comprehensive knitting reference on this subject that I've been waiting for! Judith Durant gets everything right: spiral binding (so that the instructions stay open and lay flat); large, clear step-by-step photos; step-by-step written instructions printed in easy-to-read type; photographs of swatches that show exactly what to expect from a particular increase or decrease; and compact size (small enough to carry in a knitting bag).The short "Special Circumstances" section, on shaping cable, lace, and color patterns to best effect, is by itself worth the price of the book. The only increase/decrease that I could think of that is NOT shown, is the "nupp" used in Estonian lace knitting (lily of the valley pattern), which requires two rows. (Every time I pick up my lily-of-the-valley shawl project, I wonder whether any motif is pretty enough to be worth all the grief of picking up multiple yarnover loops in a single decrease.)The photographs illustrate the techniques with the yarn held to the left in "continental" (pick) knitting style. This should not detract from the book's value for knitters who hold the yarn to the right in "English" (throw) knitting style. In either style, the yarn must be positioned on the needles in exactly the same way to get specific desired effects.Another book that deals with increases and decreases as they are used in shaping garments (and includes how-to instructions with small photos) is The Shape of Knitting: A Master Class in Increases, Decreases, and Other Forms of Shaping. However, THE SHAPE OF KNITTING is project-oriented. INCREASE DECREASE is the book that belongs on the knitter's reference shelf or in his/her knitting bag.Another terrific, comprehensive spiral-bound reference book, very similar in look and feel to INCREASE DECREASE, is Cast On, Bind Off: 54 Step-by-Step Methods, which deals with techniques for casting on and binding off.

By Cissa This is the third knitting resource book I've gotten in similar sizes and formats, and I have to say I am very happy with them all. I love the basic one (which not only has a good index, but some basic tools like a ruler for checking gauges, and holes to check the size of one's needles), and the second one I got- which covers alternative ways to cast on and bind off- is exceedingly helpful.I expect this one will be similarly useful. Though I am not thus far a creative knitter, sometimes I have not been happy with the way a pattern's prescribed increases or decreases look, and this gives me so many alternatives!A previous reviewer did not like that all the pictures show someone knitting continental rather than English style. While this is true, for me it doesn't make a lot of difference; the photos focus on what the yarn and needles are doing, and are detailed and explicit enough to figure it out, whichever way one knits. (I mostly knit English style, but am trying to learn continental.)I am delighted with it!

Useful for the Novice Knitter, Useless for the Experience Knitter By Kalia This book is from the same publisher and in the same format as a book about how to cast on and bind off. I very much like that book. I learned a lot of new information from it. I bought this book due to that. Unfortunately the vast majority of the information is just so basic that anyone who's ever knit anything with shaping would find over 2/3s of it to be useless. For example, k2tog and k3tog are covered in separate sections. Can you knit lace? You probably don't need this. Have you knit a sweater with darts? You probably don't need this. Are you just starting to knit your first scarf? Congrats, you may need this! I may gift this to someone else when I find someone who wants to learn to knit.
