Geeky wannabes in real life drama that mess up often and get played, but with surprise twists that move quickly and deliver a credible but no happily ever after ending. Applause for sticking to reality. It includes enough power and drama to keep you wondering will the hero make it or end up as a footnote on a slab somewhere. Can't wait for more!

A Start-up Techno-Thriller for All By TX Golfer This review is based on a free copy received from the author but reflects my own opinion. This business thriller (not an oxymoronic phrase) is cleverly based on the very real current issue of protection of personal communications privacy as addressed by a young wanna-be entrepreneur. David tries several off-the-wall schemes to generate passive income before he creates a unique approach to ensuring privacy of electronic communications between individuals. That’s when the adventure truly begins as he attracts the interest of several suitors, each offering investment “term sheets”. Naïve David struggles to understand the process, financing, and control implications. Along the way his offering gains the attention of the Secret Service.Lucas Carlson’s opening effort as a novelist was very strong. He used his personal business background to bring a realistic start-up process to the novel. His skillful handling of the protagonist’s character growth, warts and all, made me care for David and moan about some of his decisions. The use of current security concerns provided another solid foundational element that is of concern to everyone, not just techo-geeks.The business application used as a centerpiece was used in a largely non-technical way, making it accessible to all types of readers – with or without business or technical backgrounds. However both were presented in such a way that they hit their marks. The author’s presentation was believable and did not contain disturbing inaccuracies like many books written by non-technical authors. The only element that disturbed me was how the novel turned into a Robert Ludlum-like story line in a way that didn’t jibe with the characters. I think the author stretched the abilities and reactions of David and his co-founder somewhat beyond reasonable belief, or at least without the requisite backgrounds. On balance, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Lucas Carlson.

Newman This review is based on a free copy received from the author but reflects my own opinion.David Alexander is a “dreamer,” who is looking for a way to generate enough passive income to be able to live comfortably without a day job. Even though he is a talented programmer who could easily land a decent paying job, he seems to do reckless things on a whim. That includes burning through all his credit cards to purchase a web-site that sells jelly fish tanks. This angers David’s girlfriend and David’s obsession seems to leave him no time to visit his sister, who is in a medical facility with a debilitating disease.Down to his last cent, David comes up with a new way of doing encryption which involves creating a lot of false electronic traffic to mask the actual data that is transmitted. His product gets the attention of Sean, a Secret Service agent, who is worried about terrorists being able to send messages with the new technology. The bad guys have already tried one attempt with some success and Sean is sensing something big coming.David must decide what is important to him as his girlfriend wants to leave him, his best friend (Andrew) is upset with him, the government is after him and some bad guys may also soon be after him. This book could have been a whole lot better. It seems portions of the book move along incredibly slow. Other times the author fails to give enough background information or describes action that is happening very tersely. The reader wants to know a lot more about Andrew and how he grew up and what he is really thinking. Sean is another character that could have been developed a lot more. We only have a brief introduction to him as someone who goes through the exact same routine everyday on his way to work. There is a scene where he calls in a favor and the reader doesn’t have enough information to understand why the other person agrees to it. The bad guys are not developed enough, nor are their real motivation behind what they do. I give this book three stars.
