0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cartoonish in good and bad ways By Amazon Customer Amancay Nahuelpan is extremely talented. I'm not just saying that to start out the review on a super positive note either. They are just really good at what they do. It's the right combination of cartoon exaggeration while still maintaining a certain level abstract reality. Nahuelpan is not full on Robert Crumb or Chuck Jones just cause there's a certain degree of subtlety they employee. It's cartoonish but they don't actively yell about it. The coloring helps highlight that too.Matt Pizzolo is no Amancay Nahuelpan. Confused is what I'd describe his writing as. He wants us to think there's these big conspiracies going about but he's so cartoonish with them that they'd be impossible to hide even in the cartoon world he's created. All of his supposed tough free thinking types seem to just think a lot like your typical college grad student or professor, which is about as un-free as a person can be. It's more confusing cause he sets up these old fashion B-movie setups that Angie Dickinson and Pam Grier would be in but with an extra hard slant into left that ultimately robs the fun out of them. Those old 70s movies just wanted to tell stories about lesbian bounty hunters that fought hillbillies and the politics were simply the get out of free jail card. Here the politics and message takes center stage while he hopes all the women in prison cartoon stuff gets him out of jail free. Neither of these are roads to great art but one is more fun and more hopeful and it's not the politics first route. I find it also kinda interesting that Pizzolo, who is himself a self starting, entrepreneurial type, appears so confused about much of the politics within it. I will say that at the end of the book he mentions how he was targeted by lobby groups from DC and admittedly everything gets blurry and counter productive when it comes those guys and DC.This is essentially the first 3 issues of a new series that has yet to produce new issues. It's kind of a shame cause it's interesting and there's a wheels off quality to it. Pizzolo might not be doing a good job getting his message across and he might also come off like raging loon but I can't imagine anyone else making this comic other than the 2 people involved here. In a world where cookie cutter image comics rule the stands outside of DC and Marvel, it's nice to have one that's going a different route.

Promising By Alt Sera Solomon is applying for Yale and, since Daddy is famous, she seems sure to be accepted until cops who are acting on a tip find a bunch of weapons stashed in her locker. After that, things turn pretty grim.In the next installment -- one of the most brilliantly intense works of graphic fiction I’ve seen in some time -- a young man’s desperate life is compared with that of an American chicken raised for slaughter.And then there’s a bunch of stuff I never quite understood, including a number of cage fighting scenes involving Sera. Followed by a bunch of explanatory scenes that tell us the future of Detroit. Well, it couldn’t really get any worse than it is now.When the story starts making sense again, we learn about a team of people who are living off the grid. They’re modern revolutionaries of a sort. Not a bad concept, although it took some time for it to develop.Surrounding all of this are raving network commentators who spew hatred for the benefit of their corporate masters (yes, just like now) and lots of porn channels (just like now) and an endless supply of guns (yeah, just like now).The parts of the story that make sense are good and the art brings it together. I’m not quite sure where this is going (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) but I give Young Terrorists credit for getting off to a rocking start despite some floundering moments.

Good art, but the story is kind of a mess so far By Wayne A McCoy 'Young Terrorists, Volume 1: Pierce The Veil' by Matt Pizzolo and art by Amancay Nahuelpan is a volume 1, but, if you're like me, you'll be confused at first. You may even be confused by the time it's done.Sera is the daughter of a global bigwig, and she is accused of terrorism and interred in a detainment camp. Rather than just being some rich guy's daughter, Sera has some skills. She breaks out, and ends up being an internet star in Detroit. Along the way she collects some more people to her side, including a young man who is very down on his luck. What this group of people will do is up to future issues.The entire 80 page volume represents the first volume and there is a lot of story thrown at the reader. There is also some confusing jabs at the megarich and corporations. There is an infographic showing Sera's family and two others, but we don't meet those two other families, so that graphic comes across as information we don't need yet. The whole thing is kind of thrown at the reader with the hope that things will make sense, and they kind of do, but I wasn't as much a fan of it. I did the like the artwork, and I am kind of interested to see where this goes.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Black Mask Comics, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
