In Delhaven, there is an Inn run by a retired mercenary. If you are a down-on-your-luck mercenary or men-at-arms, come to the public rooms and Hilda Brant, the owner, will give you a bowl of stew. If you want ale, hand over the coins. Hilda may give you floor space, but she expects you to pay in favors or coins. Hilda is also an untrained mage with an elemental, which is another reason she is retired. Most mercenary companies are wary of mages for good reason. When Lord Barton decides he wants the magic on Hilda's property, Hilda pulls together her resources, including her brother a mage and her sister a brothel Madame, to save her Inn. Hilda isn't prepared for the damage and chaos caused by a dragon, black mage, and elementals. And a very angry Lord Barton.

By Have2Read NOTE: I got this through Kindle Unlimited, so this review may not be marked ad "verified purchase", but, fyi--no money or skullduggery ensued with my 5 star review. On to the review: Sooo good. I can't wait for the next book (hurry up, Cyn Bagley). Retirement for mercenaries is, apparently, problematic. Hilda retired from mercenary work, bought an inn and settled down to live the semi-good life--all while helping out her fellow retirees. Still fit, if a bit less limber, Hilda is smart and capable with a bit of magical ability thrown in. But, as bodies start popping up and evil rears a more than ugly head, Hilda's independence and "friendships" change, enlarge, shrink and get lost. Great action, great character development and world building, I loved the whole thing. I went back and devoured all of Bagley's other books--but none topped this, her latest.

By Pat Patterson Hilda's Inn for Retired Heroes Kindle Editionby Cyn BagleyI obtained my copy of the book through the Kindle Unlimited program, therefore I do not show as a Verified Purchaser. To me, " Hilda's Inn for Retired Heroes" sounded like a title for one of the " Chicks in Chain Mail" series. It isn't, and only resembles that series and that the heroes are women who have fought as mercenaries.Hilda is a tough old bird, who realized that being a mercenary doesn't come with a greater retirement plan. So, after she sat down her sword for the last time, she picked up whenever innkeepers carry. Her most famous selling point is a pot of stew, which is added to continuously until it has earned the sobriquet of Hundred Years Stew. (Nothing wrong with that, by the way, except I do wonder if the kettle ever gets cleaned.)Unfortunately for her, the inn is located over a magical well, which is desired by the evil Lord Butthead (that's not his name, but it does describe his personality). He is assisted in his vile endeavors by an evil, evil Mage, who deserves to be squished.Hilda's Allies are her beautiful sister who owns a brothel, her handsome brother who is under the protection of a dragon in human form, and the retired heroes mentioned in the title. Sprinkle in a little bit of magic, on both sides, and let the conflict begin. This makes are really good standalone book, but I really hope it's the start of a series. There are so many good things that could happen with the characters, that I hate to leave them as they are.I suppose I have to say this: the book would have really benefited by another pass through the proofreading process. That's more noticeable toward the end of the book; doesn't take anything away from the story, just makes the flow somewhat uneven. Here's the bottom line for me: good story, great characters, and I want more. (I do wish, however, that I hadn't been expecting Chicks And Chain Mail, but that's a deficit of my expectations, and in no way reflects poorly on the story.)
