Day This is a book any filmmaker should own, or at least any filmmaker who is actually making a movie. Whether you're new to making movies or are a veteran this book is a great guide to what you need to know.It is written step by step so that even if you have never actually budgeted a movie or film now you can. The book is broken into 6 chapters that each cover a different aspect of making a movie.Chapter 1 - "Setting Up a Production Company"- helps you get all your ducks in a row to bring in and put out money. You'll learn what paperwork you need to do, who you may need to talk to and other things such as going to the bank. Chapter 2 - "Pre-Production" has some checklists for various projects and guides you in the things many folks overlook such as getting the rights to music and such. Chapter 3 "Development/Marketing" covers just that because after all you eventually would like to make some money back right? Chapter 4 - "High Definition" is the techie part of the book. This guides you in all the stuff that many creative people have no clue about such as frame rates, codecs and color samples. You do need to understand a bit about this as it makes a difference on your budget. Chapter 5 -"A Master Budget Line By Line" covers every line item in a budget and tells you why it is there. Valuable information if you have never used a budget. Chapter 6 "Sample Budgets For Specific Projects" is pretty self explanatory.Coming in at over 360 pages this reference is a must have on any movie or film. Buy it and use it for yourself or buy it and give it to the person who is in charge of budget. You will be glad you did. There are downloadable budgets to get you started on the right foot on your next project.Film and Video Budgets are what many creative people consider the boring part of making movies yet it must be done if you really want to get money for production and make money off the final product. Vital Book for Every Step of the Filmmaking Process By Tom Farr If you’re planning on undertaking a film production, knowing how much everything is going cost is vital to actually making your film production happen. Film and Video Budgets, 6th Edition by Maureen A. Ryan and published by Michael Wiese Productions is the go-to resource for planning your production and thinking through every possible budgetary concern you’ll run across during your film production. The book walks you through sample budgets for several different types of projects, including features, short films, and student films. You’ll learn how to set a production company, think through all the pre-preproduction issues of your project, and even the marketing and distribution of your film. There are sample budgets included, but you’ll definitely want to make sure to find out accurate costs for your particular project. The appendix includes some tips on how to saves on costs. If you’re a screenwriter, I’d definitely suggest reading this book because it will help you to write a script with budgetary concerns in mind. Because if your script requires an astronomical budget, it’s less likely to get bought. So the book is a great resource even if you’re only a writer and don’t plan on producing a film yourself.Film and Video Budgets, 6th Edition is considered the “budgeting bible” of film productions. If you're planning a production, this book will walk you through the process because everything about producing a film has a cost associated with it.Review copy provided by Michael Wiese Productions
