2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great message, great illustrations, poorly written By J.Prather I really wanted to like this book. I've picked it up and read it numerous times, trying to change my initial perceptions, but I always end up coming back to the numerous things that bother me about this story. First, the good things. The sentiments are wonderful. Every child can benefit from hearing a story all about unconditional love, whether it be the love of a parent or the love of God. There's a great lesson to be learned here.The illustrations in this book some of the most charming I have seen. This little group of bears make me smile and allow the star rating for this book to barely squeak into the three star category. The simple landscapes are bright and colorful and the characters are able to convey a surprising amount of emotion.it's the story here that falls flat. Even though the rhymes are pretty much spot on, the cadence and wordiness take away any sort of smooth read aloud flow. I felt like I was arriving in the middle of the story, as the author explains why there are three different bears living together by using one short sentence. This leaves many questions unanswered and takes away from the story. It's way too didactic for my tastes, and even though I liked what it said, I just didn't appreciate how the author chose to present it. I Love You Even When is only a marginal recommend.

A message every child needs to hear ~ Unconditional Love By Vhill I Love You Even When by Donna Keith is a board book illustrated Allison Edgson for children ages 0-4. The rhyming story is about a family of bears who demonstrate unconditional love to each other through different life events. The parents show their unconditional love to the bear cubs in situations that happen to many children in their real lives. The bear cubs do things like playing to rough, making a mess, disobeying, and not sharing. The parents respond by demonstrating unconditional love, but also instill lessons of obedience, apologies, and consequences for their actions. The mother bear also makes a mistake and the bear cubs must demonstrate unconditional love to her as well.I really enjoyed the message of this book, and I know we will be reading it for years to come. My 11 month old daughter is really drawn to stories that have rhythm and rhyme to the words, and this one has both. When we first read the story, I was questioning a bit the choice of the illustrator to make the bear cubs 3 different types of bears. A bear family with a brown, white, and panda bear cub isn't exactly something you would witness in nature. But then I realized that perhaps that was a conscious decision to connect with children who may be a part of a racially diverse family because of adoption or foster care. This book would make a wonderful gift for a family who may fall into that category with 'bear cubs' who look different on the outside, but who all need the same unconditional love.

From the first page, it assumes that you have read the first book. Unfortunately, I haven't and I felt that I might've missed a page when I began reading. You don't necessarily need to since it is a new adventure for the 3 cubs. But I would encourage you explore the prequel if you like this one.The message is well conveyed, sweet and simple. The 3 cubs are comfortable with each other in their chosen family but now, they want to see how much their adoptive parents love them despite being themselves. It does have a slight religious overtone but I didn't really notice or mind it. So, it should be okay for all. However, if it does bother you, just to forewarn you. The writing is simple and has a nice rhythm. Some words might need defining for the younger set, but nothing overly difficult to comprehend. And the bears - SO CUTE! The artwork is so adorable and beautifully drawn. Every time I turned the page, I can't help but smile at the all the cuteness. With just simple pictures, the artist matched the emotion and action to the writing.The price is just right for the length and quality of the board book. The pages are thick and the colors/printing are sharp and clean. I would highly recommend this book. Beautiful message, lovely artwork and good price makes this a winner for my shelf.
