She is a born warrior, able to outride any man, deal death with her fierce blade, and command awesome and mysterious forces granted to her by a set of magical tattoos. Now as the newly minted duchess of Klaar, Rina confronts a menace that threatens her world in a divine conflict that will push her newfound abilities to their limits.

As sinister and magical forces unite against her, Rina’s only chance at stopping them is to gain new tattoos that will increase her powers beyond anything she has known before. United with her few trusted companions, she makes her desperate quest across a bloodshed-ravaged land while war brews among the gods.

With the enchanted world of Helva hanging in the balance, Rina must learn to wield extraordinary power to save herself and her people, before unimaginably powerful forces—and the savage fury of the gods—tear apart the land forever.

Review

“The follow-up to the first book, Ink Mage, gives readers a more in-depth perspective of the characters and the realm they live in. The action is just as fast, the characters are just as colorful, and the violence is just as stabby.” —Amazing Stories

By Amazon Customer 2.5/5 But I'll round to 3After reading Ink Mage, I couldn't wait for the sequel to come out, and so perhaps my hopes were a bit high for this book, but in the end I'm still left with disappointment. This felt like the first half of a good book, where it is setting up the pieces and slowly building the action and tension. Then it's over. There was no climax in this book, let alone resolution, no problems were solved and many were introduced, and so at the end the book just left a bitter taste in my mouth.*Spoilers*I obviously misinterpreted the blurb, because when it said "Rina’s only chance at stopping them is to gain new tattoos that will increase her powers beyond anything she has known before" I assumed she would actually, you know, GET SOME TATTOOS. Instead, for a book titled "The Tattooed Duchess" the duchess in question gets remarkably little air time, and makes no real progress except for fixing a few bureaucratic issues in her duchy. So if I were asked to summarize this book it would be "Everyone went their different ways, and didn't get much done. Except for the main character, she got herself captured."

I loved the concept, the main character, and the story-teller’s colorful language, so I was looking forward to the second book. Now having finished the Tattooed Duchess, I still think that the author has a wicked imagination, but I wasn’t half as engaged as I was in the first book, and that’s stating it mildly. Way too many subplots, way too much time away from the main character, and too much set-up for book 3, which I’ll have to wait God knows how long for, kept me on the fringes as an outsider rather than in the adventure. I stopped caring, and only kept reading because of my appreciation of Ink Mage, and I’d hoped the installment would at least be self-contained, that it would have a conclusion. But no. The book abruptly ends, not even on a cliffhanger. It finishes with a ton of unfinished business. As a reader you’re just left hanging. Sorely disappointed.

The man is incapable of writing a boring word! He's written straight thrillers, punk thrillers, and post-apocalyptic thrillers in addition to the Ink Mage books and they're all terrific. Do yourself a favor and read this, then read everything else he's written. You won't be disappointed.
