Alex is a very clever man who helps the police solve "magical crimes". He is the black sheep of a very wealthy family and a bit of a loner until he falls in love with his partner Julian (The Courtship of Julian St. Albans) This story is a prequel in which we learn how Alex meets officer/detective Lapointe his initial connection with the police department and future friend. At this time he is still a student of 20 years and very wrapped up in his studies.There are two full length books- The Courtship of Julian St. Albans and The Apprenticeship of Julian St. Albans as well as two shorter stories- Rosemary for the Holidays and Untue Love. These books have great side characters and are rather funny at times.

I really love this author and have not been disappointed by anything she has written. I highly recommend, if this is your first story by Amy Crook, that you read the rest of the series. Such an interesting world that she has created and the characters are very enjoyable.

Seeing Alex as a young student was a treat as was this short but complete story. The only thing I didn't like was that it ended because I could read her work forever.
