The apostle Paul, one of the most prominent figures in the early Jesus movement, had a lot to say about money. His letters deal with real people as they lived their Christian lives in the Greco-Roman world. He finds it necessary to address “those who are rich in this present world” (1 Tim 6:17). But he also has to address those do not want to work, for whatever reason, and are “idle and disruptive” (2 Thess 3:6). Moreover, whereas most churches today have a certain socio-economic homogeneity, some of Paul’s churches had a combination of upper class wealthy people and lower class slaves worshiping side-by-side, and it inevitably created friction (esp. 1 Cor 11:17–34).

During the past twenty years a significant amount of research has been done on class-consciousness in the Greco-Roman world and on the significance of Paul’s fund-raising venture “for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem”—“the collection”—for his ministry. Relying on the surprising results of current Pauline scholarship and a careful exegesis of a variety of New Testament texts, this book offers a thorough investigation of the apostle Paul’s sayings and dealings with money.

A theological treatment with a progressing plotline By Tanner J Huss This book is exactly what it claims to be: a biblical and theological analysis, but it exceeds all expectations in its thorough treatment and creative, inductive presentation of the subject. Verbrugge and Krell don't just data dump; they tell a story, a well-documented story that highlights the relevant contextual information without overloading the text with minutiae. As a former student and now a friend of Keith Krell, I can personally attest to his intense desire to exegete the Word faithfully, and this is precisely what he and Verbrugge have accomplished with this volume. I always appreciate comprehensive citations as a way to find other resources on related topics. It is not uncommon to see upwards of fifty endnotes in one of Krell's sermons (https://bible.org/byauthor/180/keith_krell), so I expected to get plenty of resource recommendations with this volume, and the authors have not disappointed. If you have ever asked, "Why did Paul sometimes accept financial support and other times refuse it? Why was Paul so adamant about taking the collection for the Jerusalem church and later delivering it personally? Did Paul receive funds from individual patrons/benefactors? What kinds of costs would Paul have incurred in his ministry? In writing letters? Should pastors, missionaries, and/or other ministers receive support from local churches or work for their own provision? Are there times when they should receive support and times when they shouldn't? Why doesn't the New Testament command tithing? Should all Christians give 10% of their income to the local church? Less? More? Does Paul condemn all forms of debt for Christians (Ro. 13:8)? How should Christians view the government? Taxes?" then you won't find a more up-to-date, thorough, faithful text out there to get your answers than this one!Thank you Dr. Verbrugge and Dr. Krell for such a careful treatment and fun read!

Meadowcroft Just finished a delightful journey guided by Verbrugge and Krell through all Paul's biblical references concerning that which trips so many up on the narrow road---money, money, money. Comprehensive and theological yet readable, the book tackles the subject well and both asks and answers important questions. It even addresses tithing which Paul didn't as God's call on our lives as stewards of financial resources demands clarity and this book addresses that subject as well as each topic well. If you're interested in God's view of money as expressed in the Pauline epistles this book is worth your investment of that which you are meant to be stewarding for the kingdom-both time and money. Enjoy!

By Kimberly Drake MTh Summit University Zondervan released a book titled Paul and Money: A Biblical and Theological Analysis of the Apostle's Teachings and Practices authored by Dr. Verlyn Verbrugge and Dr. Keith R. Krell. The authors take the reader through a comprehensive study of Paul’s views concerning financial matters. The book provides clear and concise application when appropriate while providing in-depth accurate exegesis on passages. The construction of the book is laid out well with its organization and lends itself successfully to the study of the Pauline epistles. The orderliness of the book conforms to an academic text while the chapters create neatly parceled packages. By dividing the book into three parts, the authors tackle Paul’s views on financial support, views on raising money for the church and finally an understanding of other issues in finances related to cultural context. While the book maintains a high standard of academic excellence, it is easily understandable for the everyday person. This book is an excellent resource to students, educators, and Paul enthusiasts. The book could provide as a recommend course text, could be a fine addition to your scholarly library and even an enticing read for your summer reading list.Verbugge and Krell are proven scholars that have guided numerous journeys in theological studies. In this book they consistently strive to provide the most accurate teaching. The book consists of in-depth scripture, subject and author indexes that provide for an easy reference at a glance for future study. This was one of my favorite things in the text.As a former student of Dr. Krell’s, his intensive lesson preparation and teaching was the primary reason I furthered my studies in Theology. His love for sharing knowledge encouraged me to go after additional eduation. This book reveals that same enthusiasm that he provides on a daily basis through interactions with students and congregation. I am very pleased to recommend this book to scholars and friends alike. This book release was the highlight of my year.
