Zullo gathers information from a variety of sources to chronicle one of the most tragic days in modern American history; sources include news accounts, emails, and transcripts from radio transmissions and phone messages. He also conducted personal interviews with rescuers, such as the firefighters who are credited for keeping the death toll at the Twin Towers much lower than it could have been. Background information regarding al-Qaeda's motivation for the four suicide missions is presented in an understandable, age-appropriate way. The author's writing brings the devastation and chaos of 9/11 to life. Readers can imagine the confusion of that day, from debris falling and people jumping to their deaths to escape flames in the towers to the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped by concrete and steel to the helplessness felt by the responders. The stories about the brave Flight 93 passengers and crew who revolted against the hijackers—knowing what had already happened in New York City—is especially affecting. Statistics of the devastation and follow-ups on some of the heroes portrayed in the tales effectively demonstrate the long-term effects of terrorism and traumatic events. A true Story of Bravery By Young Mensan BookParade Heroes of 9/11by Allan ZulloReview by Cole P. age 12 Permian Basin Heroes of 9/11 is a short non-fiction collection of 10 heroes from the attacks on 9/11. From firefighters at the World Trade Centers to the brave passengers on United Flight 93, this book keeps account of the bravery and hard work these people had while saving tons of peoples’ lives. Firefighters, police, EMTs, and just plain civilians go into the burning buildings and help people escape. Getting trapped in the rubble having to wait long hard hours was just one of the many challenges these brave people had to face. Being only 181 pages this book is an easy read. The stories are not connected together, so you can read this book in any order you want. Whether you just want to know more about 9/11 or are related to some of the many great people who sacrificed their lives to save the lives of others, this is a great read that described exactly what happened to 10 of the hundreds of heroes.
