When pressed, Jonathan Shea admits magic runs through his blood, but he’s always been ambivalent about it—until a dragon and her mage show up in the Scottish Highlands, and then all bets are off. Jonathan’s charmed and captivated by the dragon—a creature fresh out of myth and legend—but the woman bonded to the dragon is so enticing, he tosses caution to the winds and dives into the magical power he’s avoided for so long. Britta and her dragon prepare for a battle to save Earth. Freshly transplanted from a much earlier time, she feels awkward, out of place. The first person she lays eyes on is Jonathan. There’s something about him. She can’t quite pinpoint it, but he has way more magic than he lets on. Magic aside, it’s deeper than that. For the first time ever, she questions the wisdom of remaining a maid. If she doesn’t make up her mind damned fast, though, her choices will fritter away. Beset from every side, she’s never needed her magical ability more. Surrounded by dragon shifters, Celtic gods, Selkies, time travel, and a heaping portion of magic, Jonathan comes into his own fast. Fell creatures target him, Britta, and her dragon. In the midst of chaos, he and Britta find scorching passion and love so heartbreakingly tender, it will change their lives forever.

Gimpel weaves a story full of all the things I love most: passion, adventure, intrigue, and smexy times with a most delicious alpha male.Dragon Maid immediately picks up the story from To Love a Highland Dragon. Lachlan and Maggie are happily mated but the battle again The Morrigan and the red and black Wyvern wages on. Lachlan implores the Celtic gods Gwydion, Ceridwen, and Arawn for help in stymieing The Morrigan's evil influence in the world. But just like the gods, the yield no help. So Lachlan, his dragon (Kheladin), Maggie, her grandmother (Mary Elma), and her friend (Mauvreen) try to come up with their own battle strategy. While holding court with Mauvreen's coven of witches in his hoard, Kheladin is intrigued by a male witch. The witch, Jonathan Shea, has a reservoir of untapped power and potential. As he begins to probe deeper there is a disturbance that has signaled an unexpected arrival. Instantly on guard, Kheladin's strengthen the ward guarding his hoard and prepares to attack. But, their unexpected guest, or guests as it would seem are not foes but friends. The gods in their muted benevolence send help in the form of Britta and her dragon, Tarika. When Britta first arrives she is brash and arrogant and regards Jonathan as nothing more than a servant to torment and to demand he do her bidding. But the tide on that relationship quickly changes as Britta and Jonathan spend time with one another. The attraction for Britta is fairly instant on Jonathan's side -- seeing how Britta arrived sans clothing -- but it takes Britta a bit longer (not much) for her attraction to Jonathan to heat her veins. But, evil waits for no man...or woman...errr...dragon. As Jonathan is helping to acclimate Britta to this time period by taking her shopping for clothing and food, they are attacked by the red Wyvern. Quickly Britta, Jonathan, and Tarika are thrown into a battle situation that they were not expecting, at least not so soon. In that moment Jonathan puts himself on the line for Britta and Tarika, and Britta and Tarika truly understand his importance to them. Will they live long enough to tell him is the question?!?!?I am a sucker for shifter romances, and if done well, they have the capacity to draw me into a story unlike any other genre of fiction can do. I have to say that Dragon Maid was such a story! The characters were multidimensional and the world that Gimpel created was extremely compelling! I was captivated by the depth of each character, their motivations, and their interactions between one another. I loved the epiphany that Britta had about Tarika. After being together for hundreds of years a separation and a near loss allowed her to see how much she loved her dragon and friend. The reader is able to see more from the gods in this story, and there is an added twist of Jonathan's surprise parentage. That was brilliantly done, by the way. I hope to some development in that storyline in successive books. Additionally, the reader is also able to see more into the "human" aspects of The Morrigan. In To Love a Highland Dragon and early in this book, she retained her battle crow format but she showed her true form and then she split herself into all of her forms. What happened after that was kind of shiver inducing. The Morrigan is just pure evil and she will continue to wreak havoc on the world because even after all her heinous crimes against dragons and humanity, the other gods eschewed any kind of punishment.I love this series and each story builds upon the other but they just get better and better! I look forward to reading more.Ratings Detail:Rating for male protagonist: 4½★Rating for female protagonist: 4½★Rating for secondary characters: 4½★Plot Viability: 4½★General Storyline: 4½★Story Ending: 4½★Ease of Reading: 4½★Overall rating: 4½★

They are filled with multi-dimensional characters, richly drawn people (or should I say… shifters, witches, dragons and gods) who passionately pursue their tales and face down their enemies.I’m not sure why “Dragon Maid” stands out as the best book she has written—it could be that I adore her dragons. I’m forever looking up into the sky hoping to see one flying overhead. It could be the fairytale romance between a handsome 21st century closeted witch and a beautiful maiden dragon shifter from the Middle Ages.It could be the marvelously individualistic dragons and their love story. It could be the Celtic gods and the humor with which they're painted. It could be something about connecting to a life or a force outside oneself that resonates beyond belief.Gimpel is an incredibly talented storyteller. She wields magic as if she were waving a sparkler on a summer night. “Dragon Maid” is a fascinating story that sparks throughout. One thing that is true of this and all Gimpel’s books: I hate when I get to the end and walk out of her special world.

I Received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review**Review:5 starsGeneral: This book picks up right after where To Love a Highland Dragon left off, make sure to read the first book or you will miss things! Book 1 was so strong and book 2 filled the series nicely. Everything that was strong from the first novel was still there- fantastic world building, strong and unique characters, hard hitting action and steamy romance. I loved getting to see another perspective besides human and dragon in this book and learn more about the witches in this all out war and the part they play in the battle and the universe that has been created. The strongest part of this book really is the world building. Even though it was book 2 everything in terms of the rules (not the plot though) was well described and the details sucked me right in quickly and had me just as enthralled as the first book. I love the uniqueness of the characters dual personalities from book 1 and in this one I loved the differences between Britta and Jonathan and that the shifter was female since that's rarer :)Characters: Britta- Britta was not a likable character for me when the book began. She was rude, entitled and arrogant and it rubbed me the wrong way. As the book progressed she really opened up more. Thinking about it now, Lachlan was a butthead at first too so I'm realizing it is just a fragment of dragon personality and think it was well done and I hope the arrogance continues as it would make sense they would feel that way at firstJonathan- Jonathan was a nice change up for a hero. He really wasn't an alpha male, he was insecure and nervous amongst his own kind and I loved it. As the book went we got to see more of his alpha male side with his loyalty and passion.
