Review

"Working with Jeff reminds me of a quote from Michelangelo, 'I saw an angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.' Jeff’s tools have helped me develop solid premise and log lines, and to chisel my stories free from the stone. This book will help you do the same."

Michael Perri―Staff Writer, NBC’s - State of Affairs

"After reading Jeff’s terrific book I felt like rushing to my desk, new tools in hand, and fixing all my unsold screenplays. I highly recommend to anyone writing a screenplay or novel."

Nick Castle―Writer/Director, Escape From New York, Hook, August Rush, Last Star Fighter, The Boy Who Could Fly, Tap, Dennis the Menace

"Before, I used to write myself into a corner, but thanks to Jeff Lyons' premise tools now I can see my story’s structure from the outside, to see what's working and what could be stronger. This book will help you draw a map through the story forest, rather than getting lost in the trees. I've used this material with my students with the same beneficial effect as with my own writing. I highly recommend this book."

Malena Watrous―Author, If You Follow Me―Head Instructor Stanford University Online Writers Studio

"There is no book like this in the marketplace. It will help writers, producers, and directors, and save everyone from wasted time writing drafts to find a story. I wish I had this book when I was in film school."

David Jeffery―Producer, Fox’s - Bones, PBS’s – American Family, Lesson Plan

"This is a book for which many of us have been waiting, and if you are at all like me, incorporating Jeff's ideas and guidance into your work can make all the difference."

Barnet Bain―Producer, What Dreams May Come― Writer/Producer, The Celestine Prophecy

"Story structure changed my writing life, and the magician who taught it to me was Jeff Lyons. Every writer on the planet needs coffee, chocolate, and this book!"

Caroline Leavitt―New York Times bestselling author, Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You

By C J Singh .Reviewed by C J Singh (Berkeley, California). This Book Is a Simplistic Summary like "Cliff Notes"This morning, I heard Jeff Lyons touting his newly published book at the famous Book Passage Store in Corte Madera, California. As I listened to his talk and observed the book's headings and subheadings such as The Premise, The Moral Premise, The 7-Step Process, Key Concepts, Invisible Structure, it became increasingly clear to me that it is a simplistic repackaging, a "Cliff Notes" version, of the first few chapters of John Truby's 421-page THE ANATOMY OF STORY. Truby's book was published in 2007, preceded by many years of teaching classes internationally that it has now become a contemporary classic.According to Truby's website, the total number of attendees at his classes exceeds forty thousand. So far, I have heard just one promotional talk by Truby and that was at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore in Berkeley, shortly after the publication of the book. Impressed by his presentation, I studied his book with care and posted a copy of my review on amazon.com. Later, I posted several addenda. (I haven't been in any of his classes except a 2-hour webinar, but I plan to attend his novel-writing one-day class that he and his novelist wife, Leslie Lehr, will be presenting in San Francisco on 19 September, 2015)Frankly, I must point out that Truby's masterly book (available for $14.95 at amazon) is a much better value, replete as it is with detailed story-structuring examples from classic and contemporary films, plays, novels, and short-stories. Moreover, Truby includes nine exercises to help you structure YOUR work-in-progress. These exercises appear in nine chapters titled:Premise; The Seven Key Steps of Story Structure;Character;Moral Argument;Story World;Symbol Web;Plot;Scene Weave;Scene Construction and Symphonic Dialogue. The above chapter titles are from Truby's book.Even a casual acquaintance with Lyons' book will show the basis of my review. So, why the second star for Lyons' book?Although a simplistic summary, it will appeal to "Cliff Notes" self-deceiving addicts.-- c j singh

By Aoife This book helps you get from the vague "I think I have a idea for a book" stage to the reality of having a strong workable story on paper. It provides concrete and practical, rather than abstract, steps to how to build your story. I'd recommend it not only to fledgling writers but also "pantsers" who are having difficulty identifying the very important bones of their story.

By Brenda McClain I am writer (literary fiction -- yeah, one of those!), who has struggled with story development. No more. Jeff's Anatomy of a Premise Line has come to my rescue. I'd say I'd move it to the front of my shelf of "How-to-write" books, but, actually, I can get rid of all of the others.
