About the Author Paul Hernandez, PhD, earned his doctorate in Sociology specializing in the sociology of education, social inequality, and diversity. Dr. Hernandez is a nationally recognized speaker and leader in college access and success, community outreach, and pedagogy for educators working with underserved/underprepared students and students at risk of dropping out of school. As a former faculty member, non-profit administrator and educational consultant, Dr. Hernandez works with higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and non-profit organizations helping them further develop and evolve their work with students and communities. Prior to earning his degrees, he was engulfed in gang culture and deep poverty, surviving on the streets of Los Angeles. Paul openly shares with others his unique personal story of being a youth at risk and how his path has influenced his work. He has learned ways to empower young people traveling a similar path, and through his inspirational messages hopes to share his lessons and passion with those working to address the multitude of challenges faced by diverse populations of youth at risk. Campbell Dr. Hernandez's book is a must read for all involved in the work with students at risk in the PK to 16 (high education system) - from classroom teachers, counselors, administrators, policy makers, stakeholders, and outsider observers. This book blends formal research, classroom-based insight, and tools for training and implementation on how to connect with -- and therefore effectively teach -- marginalized students. Throughout the book there are multiple examples of how this unique pedagogy helps bridge relationships between teachers and students and achieve academic success.As there are many books about pedagogy, as well as about lesson delivery techniques, etc, Dr. Hernandez's book offers a flexible approach that can easily be added to (mine and) many teachers' "toolboxes" as they continue to work with our students who are at risk.

By Celina Mincey As several reviewers have mentioned, this is an invaluable tool for educators. Don't miss the fact that this book is widely applicable. It's implications are vital for ALL educators, not just K-12. I'd love to see this being used widely in collegiate courses. A major challenge university students have in preparing for their roles as teachers is gaining the skills and insights necessary to create an engaging, well-managed environment. Too often, new teachers feel completely unprepared for the disciplinary challenges they face in the real classroom.Dr. Hernandez offers such a more elegant solution than traditional books on classroom engagement. He offers a practical approach to building rapport with students to create a meaningful, engaging classroom climate. What I find so refreshing about this book is it is not lofty theory, nor is it pragmatic doctrine laying out disciplinary "techniques" that are not viable to applying in an ever-changing classroom environment.Rather, it is a transformative approach that will facilitate immediate impact that builds into lasting change and alter an educator's ability to connect with and inspire students of all ages. If you are lucky enough to observe Dr. Hernandez using REAL TALK in a classroom setting (as I have) you would be amazed at his ability to engage a room full of students whom most consider at risk and uninterested. It is inspiring to watch a group of kids who begin the session with skepticism gradually take interest, begin to participate, and end up fully engaged!I will go one step further. Unfortunately, many collegiate courses of all disciplines sorely lack student engagement. This is not just a book for professors to use to educate future teachers. It is a book for us a educators ourselves. I can't imagine that any educator of any grade level or subject matter would not benefit from using Dr. Hernandez's approach in their very own classrooms!Use this book. Your students will thank you.

It provides many examples of lessons, students' stories, and useful strategies, which are applicable and relevant to anyone in education. While reading the book, it is clear that Dr. Hernandez is really passionate about wanting to assist all educators in helping students reach their full potential and in connecting with them in an authentic and positive way. As a school counselor, I found that this book gives an interesting and true perspective on our students' struggles, which could prevent them from learning. For counselors, this understanding helps in removing roadblocks so students can be successful throughout high school and in their post secondary education. I would highly recommend reading Dr. Hernandez's book and sharing it with your colleagues!
