About the Author Brian Smith was born in Germany in 1972. Son of a German mother and a British father he grew up having both German and English as his native languages. After completing his education in Germany, he moved in 1995 to Hong Kong where he spent twenty years teaching English and German. He has also learned other languages including French, Latin and Cantonese. His extensive teaching practice with people of different ages and nationalities, and his own experience in studying foreign languages have given him a unique appreciation of how best to help learners make progress. He has already written several books including a series of children’s stories describing the magical adventures of two small boys.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Very good for Intermediate learners of German By Ringcycle This is an excellent book for improving your German. I had finished most of the Andre Klein books, and this was the next step. Although I had never successfully read a dual language book before (although I own several in various languages), I was not sure how it would work, but here's how it went. At first I could barely get through a few words of the German without having to "peek" at the English to see the translation. After a while, I would read a sentence of the German, then go over to the English side to check, and confirm certain words. By the end of the book, I was reading whole paragraphs or even pages in German, then went to the English just to see if I understood everything correctly. The book is divided into fourteen chapters, each one only 5 or 6 pages long (the entire book is 180 pages, which really means 90 pages because each one is repeated). There's sort of a continuing story, and although it's not really deep, it is entertaining. Highly recommended if you're an intermediate German learner.

The beginner version really is for beginners with simple sentence structures and basic vocabulary and enough repetition to help beginners learn. The two intermediate readers are fantastic! Very entertaining stories are used to teach commonly used vocabulary and I noticed that the author has made an effort to emphasize certain important grammatical rules in each chapter. The book and free downloadable audiofiles combined make a great teaching tool. I wish that these had been available to my high school German teacher. I hope that the author is working on some additional titles at the intermediate level.
