A Book of Spirits and Thieves, by Morgan Rhodes

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Two parallel worlds collide in this first installment of Rhodes' new series when 15-year-old Becca Hatcher is left in a catatonic state after her spirit is snatched back to the ancient world of Mytica from modern-day Toronto. Her older sister, Chrys, is guilt-ridden, having witnessed the entire event, and vows to do whatever is necessary to save her… but from what? Nothing has prepared them for what's in store. Up until this point the girls' life was centered around helping their mother out at their family's used bookstore and coping with the loss of their father, Daniel. Then a package arrives at the bookstore addressed to the girls' mom, Julia. Thinking it was nothing more than another collectible book to sell, Becca opens the package and removes the book inside, triggering the magic and intertwining their fates with the powers that flow from a magical book of spells whose previous owners have all ended up dead. Told in alternating viewpoints, this first installment in the "Spirit and Thieves" series is a direct off-shoot of Rhodes's popular "Falling Kingdom" series. Like many high fantasy novels, the plot includes the usual political battles for world dominance, powerful magic, and relationship complexity. What makes the difference is how Rhodes puts her stamp on building the complexities between the characters' relationships and their worlds. VERDICT Strong writing yields a story that feels like a roller-coaster ride, filled with rich and suspenseful anticipation.—Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VA

Morgan Rhodes’ hit series, Falling Kingdoms breaks new ground with the Spirits and Thieves series’ debut, A Book of Spirits and Thieves! It was an astonishing read and I was gripping the pages the entire time while reading because it was incredible and filled to the brim with awesomeness!Crystal and Becca are two sisters who couldn’t be more different from one another, they work in their family bookstore and Crys actually prefers spending her time snapping pictures around town, while Becca could easily lose herself in a good book. Then one day, their eccentric aunt sends a book to their mother that they open up out of curiosity and immediately something powerful happens to Becca that leaves her in a cationic state.True to Rhodes’ fashion, we get different points of view in this book, this time only three, so the multiple stories felt better controlled, though it was still a little while until we could see how everything gets connected back to one another. Our second narrator is Farrell, who is basically your ultimate bad boy/rich boy. Though there were times when you could really sympathize for the guy, but he has yet to truly win me over! He’s still stung with dealing with his older brother’s death a year ago and spends most of the time partying it up every night, taking care of his younger brother who seems to follow his dangerous path…and is a standing member of a secret society!Yes! Secret society! Our final character/narrator is a young boy, Maddox—fifteen or so—who lives in Mytica and has his own brand of special powers that he is struggling to learn to control. He has a rather evil and vile mentor who makes him work cons in helping people get rid of “ghosts” that they have. Really, there are no ghosts, yet Maddox does have the power to see them. That’s when he starts to see the ghost of a peculiar looking girl, who is none other than Becca!I’m always amazed at how Morgan can intertwine these characters’ lives together! Especially considering one of them lives in a completely different world and time. And their goals all seem to coincide with one another too. Crys is desperate to save her sister, Farrell is told by his society leader to befriend Crys and see what she knows about magic and a very specific book, and naturally, Maddox is trying to help the beautiful Becca and her quest to get back home. And we learn of more connections of this society and its mysterious leader with connections to Mytica as well! It’s all about the connections! LOL!As far as romance goes, it’s a bit of a pickle! From the getgo, you figure something might happen between Crys and Farrell, though Farrell is a little more nefarious in instigating a relationship, naturally. And then there’s poor Becca and Maddox who have the whole from different worlds thing going on, plus Becca is incorporeal the entire time she’s with him. But I am definitely interested to see where things might or might not go with these possible love connections! The pacing was awesome! I love all the secrets and twists and the secrets within secrets! There were some pretty astonishing jawdroppers thrown about in this one! I wasn’t expecting that from the first book in the series, but just wow! And the ending! Eep! It’s the kind of ending that resolves things nicely, to a point, but still leaves you wondering where these characters will go next! I will basically be on pins and needles waiting for word of the next book, because just like the Falling Kingdoms series, I have been completely swept away by everything I just read! The characters, the plot, the pacing, the world-building were all beyond exceptional! It’s the perfect blend of fantasy and modern world settings as well! And like its predecessor series, the fantasy elements are never overly complex with intricate laws and rules of the land! It’s simply magical!Overall Rating 5/5 stars

By Zachary Flye Review:Characters: This tale is told from three different perspectives, though if we're being technical, then there are actually four main characters. You have Crystal, her sister Becca, Maddox and Farrell. Crys, the older of the two sisters is going through a bit of a rebellious artist phase. She's skipping class, avoiding her responsibilities and spending all her free time taking pictures. I was kind of annoyed at Crys at first, it wasn't that she was necessarily a bad character or that she specifically did anything wrong, but her attitude wasn't the best in her first couple chapters. However over time a different side of her came out, a fierce and resilient side that I grew to really like. Then we have Becca the bookish younger sister who's spirit is sucked into the world of ancient Mytica, she's a perfectly fine character I guess, but other than a few expositional moments and being a sort of invisible friend to Maddox, she doesn't really do all that much, which I hope will change in future installments. Maddox is a boy from ancient Mytica who hasn't had the best life, he's a bit too gullible and yet still self-deprecating. Over time he too develops into a stronger more confident character. Then there's Farrell, what can I say about Farrell, well he's rich, a tad too entitled, has serious issues, and yet somehow there's a part of me that's rooting for him. I know we're supposed to be rooting for him, but I really didn't expect him to be as much of an unconscious antagonist as he is. I'll be interested to see his development in the future.Romance: Another thing I didn't expect of this book was the extreme subtlety of the romance. I mean it's there and at times it's plain to see, but most of the time the interactions between these couples seems more like platonic bonding than anything romantic. There isn't that much romantic tension between the couples, though a lot of chemistry, which makes me wonder if the author is saving the good stuff for later. However, with the lack of romance there's a lot more attention and detail focused into the plot which was very well done.World-Building; So this tale is told between two world tied together through magical means. We have ancient Mytica where the Becca/Maddox storyline takes place, and then present day Toronto, Canada (which by the way I loved reading a book not set in the US) which involves the Crys/Farrell storyline. The Mytica we see is one ruled over by Valoria and Cleiona, and best of all we learn some juicy details about them as well as their sister Eva. If I had one complaint is was that we didn't get to see all that much of it. Since there are three narrators and Maddox is the only one in Mytica, we got to see, at most, Mytica in 1/3 of the book, if that. The other storyline involves a dangerous secret society, lies, deceit, betrayal, and some very, very, shocking revelations tied not only to this storyline, but the Mytican one as well. While I was a bit bummed about the fact that we only got to see a small portion of Mytica, I'm all on board to see what's to come next in this world and how it may connect with the second half of the Falling Kingdoms series.Predictability: Holy twists and turns, Batman! I have to say the very few twists and shockers I saw coming in this book, I really only saw moments before they were revealed. I can't count how many times this book nearly floored me with the magnificently woven twists and foreshadowing. The foreshadowing we get is very subtle and it's really only after the truth has been revealed that it even makes sense. There's some possible foreshadowing for future installments that I'll be interested to see if they pan out.Ending; So this ending was not what I expected at all. Really pretty much the entire thing I could very easily say was not what I envisioned. It was kind of amazing that way. Rhodes wrote a fantastic end to this book, one that is really only the beginning of this series, as cheesy as that may sound. The final confrontations were phenomenal, very high octane and full of tension and suspense, and while I wouldn't necessarily say that this book ended in a cliffhanger, I will say that after finishing it I found myself needing the second book as soon as possible. I can't wait to find out how everything goes down in the sequel.Rating:So I will say I debated on giving this book five stars or four and a half, because I did feel like the book could have benefited with some more Mytica, but after my deliberation, I found that I couldn't fault this fantastic book just because I wanted more. It's a great read and I'm sure any Falling Kingdoms fan would fall in love with it like I have.

This book totally blew me away and I did not expect that at all. Rhodes’ ability to seamlessly weave contemporary with high fantasy was impressive. Of course, I’m not an expert in this genre but maybe I need to read more Urban Fantasy, I think I’ve only read a couple, because I really like it. I was easily able to connect with each character since it was told from three POVs. Despite the fact that the story itself didn’t progress as much as I expected, yet I still loved it so much, speaks wonders to Rhodes’ ability to capture a reader’s attention and actually keep it. The pacing is smooth and I read this book fairly quickly, but yes, the story itself didn’t really go as far as I thought it would. Much of the action and excitement doesn’t happen until the last quarter of the book, but the way Rhodes laid the groundwork and set up the series during the first three-quarters of the book was well done. I was never bored, to say the least. The true main character is Crystal, as her family is very much tied into this secret society called Hawkspear and its connection to the world of Mythica. After she unknowingly opens a magical book, the Bronze Codex, her life is changed forever. She uncovers the truth of why her father left her family, all the secrets her mother never told her, albeit in an achingly slow way, and how dangerous her life has now become. As a whole, I really liked Crystal. She has an artistic spirit and a love for funny t-shirts. I also liked that wasn’t easily manipulated and was pretty kickass when she needed to be. And when the girl wants answers, she gets them no matter how she has to. One of my favorite scene of hers would have to be when she went out for sushi with Farrell. Even though it was told from Farrell’s perspective, I reveled in how she handled everything and I was very happy with how their relationship progressed. It was very atypical and I loved that.Oh, and I have to say that Crystal’s mother bugged me so much. Yes, I know her heart was in the right place and she’s being all protective, but I’m seriously sick of characters “protecting” others by lies of omission. It’s becoming a big pet peeve of mine. It’s okay when the kid is young or lacks the mental capacity, but if it’s a sane, capable person, there’s a limit to how many secrets and lies I can stand. In real life, I can’t stand them at all, but in books I can only take so much before it becomes unnecessary and rage-inducing.Farrell’s story did not turn out how I was expecting at all, but in a good way. I thought the author was going to follow the usual character progression that you would come to expect of a seemingly bad guy with a conscience, but that wasn’t the case here with Farrell. I don’t know how his character will change in the rest of the series and if he will indeed follow that tried and true plotline, but so far, I like not liking him. His family has been in this secret society for a long time and after the death of his older brother, Farrell is welcomed into the inner circle. It’s obvious his brother’s death isn’t what it seems, at least I hope, and I only wish we had delved into that a little more. His brother Adam plays a significant role in the book as well and it was interesting kind of seeing both sides play out. I liked how protective Farrell was with his brothers, but I didn’t like how easily manipulated he was when it came to Hawkspear and Markus, the leader of the society. He’s a bit over his head, lets just leave it at that.Maddox is actually from Mythica and his role revolves around Becca, Crystal’s sister. I really enjoyed being in Mythica and I thought Rhodes creating quite an intriguing world. Becca is put into a coma after touching the Bronze Codex, and is brought to that world as a spirit. There, only Maddox can see and interact with her as he has a very special magical power. There’s a lot that even Maddox doesn’t know about his past and how important a role he plays in the politics of Mythica, but as the story progresses, his story unravels a lot faster than on the Contemporary side of the story, and I appreciated that. Becca and Maddox’s relationship evolves into a romance, naturally, and I thought they were so cute together. These were two innocent and sweet characters who have a lot of crazy and intense things happen to them in Mythica. I felt like there wasn’t nearly enough time with them and I hope we see so much more of them together as the series progresses.Aside from that one big issue I mentioned above, I loved the book. That ending was all kinds of craziness, much of which I expected but also a lot of which I didn’t see coming. I didn’t want to stop reading. It was funny because I brought it with me to class and was reading it during breaks and it drove me crazy when I had to put it down. All I know for sure is that I’m super eager to read Rhodes’ previous series and see how it all connects. I even got the audiobooks ready for me to listen to next. I’m so excited! Everyone needs to read this book.
