1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this is a book more for administrators and I suppose instructors who want to know what the school is evaluating. By Anthony Sanchez At my school, those of us conducting online classes are expected to just run the course as we desire. I think I do a good job, but I know that I can always improve. That’s why I grabbed this book when I saw the title. I interpreted the title to mean that it would provide me with tips for improving my online instruction.Instead, this is a book more for administrators and I suppose instructors who want to know what the school is evaluating. It’s not that I discount the need for a good system of evaluation, but try as I might, I really couldn’t get to excited about the material. And btw, despite what so many educators and the authors of this book want to claim, there is actually no good science on forming a course to meet each students’ “mode of learning”. In fact, the so-called studies on this different ways of learning is very faulty if not plain phony. But that’s a minor point as far as what this book is discussing.More importantly, I didn’t always understand what kind of online course the authors were discussing. I saw another Amazon reviewer state that it involves a live online course. That is, one with students online simultaneously. Now that would make more sense to understand what was being stated. I’ve never run that type of course and I’ve never studied in that type of course. They don’t exist where I teach. Therefore, some of what was written in the book was not helpful to me.In sum, if you are an administrator wanting to justify forming a method to evaluate your campus online teaching system, then this should be a useful book.

Thorough, but could be better By Jane Rosenthal This is a thoroughly researched book that presents some good practices to planning and improve online teaching, as well as some tools to evaluate effectiveness. However, I agree with other reviewers who noted that this is a very traditional model of online education that doesn't consider hybrid or blended synchronous/asynchronous learning models. I think it could be improved by considering various options in a more complete way. Also, people buying this book should note this is about evaluating courses (and there is enough her to evaluate online programs and possibly faculty effectiveness), but it is not about assessing student work. So if you are looking for teaching tips or assessment, there are other books out there for you.

An academic approach to the evaluation of online teaching By Jerry Saperstein I’ve taken a number of online college courses and quite liked most of them. One curse in particular on a programming language is taught by a literally renowned professor. His teaching technique doesn’t really seem any different than what you would encounter in a classroom. The gentleman knows his subject well and is totally at ease in front of a camera. The last time I took the course, my understanding is that it had more than 400,000 registrants. Obviously not all online teachers are effective. This is an admittedly academic attempt to analyze the elements – “best practices” – that lead to effective online teaching. It’s kind of like reading an instruction manual on how to fish. You can read it over and over, but you still may never catch a fish. I really found it kind of boring and felt like they were beating a dead horse. But I don’t teach or administer online teaching, so someone in the field might find it very helpful.Jerry
