The Combat Codes fuses thrilling mixed martial arts action into an immersive sci-fi world. A must-read for any fan of unarmed combat. Murray Pearson is sick of buying broken kids from the slave Circles. He’s sick of training them to become skilled combatants, only to watch them break again. He’s sick of reporting his failures as a talent scout to men who don’t have the guts to stand in the Circles themselves. Cego doesn’t understand why he’s fighting. He doesn't understand the grueling training sessions he's forced to endure every day. He doesn’t understand why they scream for blood when he steps into the Circle. The one thing Cego does understand is hand-to-hand combat. He was born to fight. Cego is sent down an unlikely path at Murray’s side, paved with fierce competition at the world’s most prestigious combat school along with the answers to his own mysterious past.

The Combat Codes (The Combat Codes Saga) (Volume 1), by Alexander Darwin

Review "An absorbing fightpunk world... The perfect blend for fans of mixed martial arts and sci-fi." - T.P. Grant of Bloodyelbow.com"The Combat Codes is a brilliant story told in a world where MMA style combat has taken the place of war. Each nation maintains a stable of fighters who represent them in territorial disputes with each other, as well as an academy to train up those fighters. This is the story of a former fighter and his new protege and it has a distinctly Ender's Game vibe to it which should be taken as the compliment it is meant as... My only problem was that by the end of the book I found myself annoyed that I couldn't immediately read the sequel." - Josh "Kintanon" Wentworth of JoshJitsu.info"If you liked The Hunger Games and Harry Potter but thought they didn't have enough punching and grappling, then this may be the book for you." - Can Sönmez of Slideyfoot.com

From the Author I wrote the Combat Codes because I couldn't find any fiction out there that integrated mixed martial arts in an accurate and satisfying manner. Go ahead and search for "MMA Fiction" on Amazon and see what pops up...I wanted to write a story for the millions of MMA, brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, boxing and muay thai fans out there.  A novel that appreciated the grace of a well-timed osoto gari sweep or the dull thud of a devastating leg kick.  A book that captured the many nuances of MMA that have made it the fastest growing international sport in the world.Although the Combat Codes is written with enthusiasts of unarmed combat in mind, you certainly don't need any prior fighting knowledge to enjoy the story.  In fact, if you've ever been interested in martial arts in general, or just like a good old fashioned sci-fi adventure, the Combat Codes should hit the spot.

About the Author Alexander Darwin is a science fiction author with an unabashed reverence for combat sports. He spends his days getting humbled on the mats, staring at the unwritten pages of his next novel, and questioning the dumb luck that landed him such a beautiful wife and daughter.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. the author contacted me and asked if I'd like to read an advance copy By KJ2020 I have to first note that I received a proof of the Combat Codes from the author prior to making this purchase. Due to my connections to the sport (MMA), the author contacted me and asked if I'd like to read an advance copy.I was somewhat skeptical with the pitch at first: "MMA fused with sci-fi." Though I am a huge sci-fi / fantasy fan, and my job revolves around MMA, I couldn't really see how the two could be linked without coming off as hokey. I pictured a futuristic version of 'Street Fighter' with Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Combat Codes was not what I expected. Alexander Darwin created a genuinely unique and believable world that integrates MMA every step of the way. I'm not talking the run of the mill punching, kicking and tackling that you encounter within the fight scenes for most fiction out there. I'm talking vivid descriptions of triangle chokes, judo throws, single legs, boxing combos. Clearly Darwin is not only a fan of the sport, but a practitioner as well (and it doesn't seem to hurt that MMA columnist T.P. Grant was 'combat editor' to the book) because the fight scenes came off as both genuine and captivating. The action wasn't what really sold me on the Combat Codes though. The narrative itself was genuinely entertaining: it wasn't just a vehicle to take a reader from fight scene to fight scene. I really got wrapped up in the characters and the world around them. I don't think it would be a stretch to say a non-fight fan would still enjoy Combat Codes (and maybe learn to enjoy MMA a bit throughout the read). In closing... if I had to compare Combat Codes to any Van-Damme movie, I'd say a cross between 'Bloodsport' and 'Universal Solider' which are two of my favorites (I'm really not sure why JCVD has infiltrated my review). Needless to say, I'm very much looking forward to a second entry in the Combat Codes saga.

I'm a huge fan of sci-fi /fantasy and have read everything from the old dragonlance series, forgotten realms series to the classics like I, Robot and Dune to newer authors like Patrick Rothfuss, George R. R. Martin etc. This book draws on the rich traditions of world-building like the series above, and combines that with the new twist of a detailed, fast-paced, mixed-martial arts universe. Whether you know nothing about MMA or you are an avid fan, its clear the author knows what he's talking about and uses that to create a "fresh" type of fantasy / sci fi with a combat system both realistic and interesting.I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Cego, the story's hero, and will look forward to the other books in this series to be released.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A story about a fighter set in a scifi universe By Julia A. Johansen The StoryThis story is mostly fighting/combat set in a scifi universe. Older, retired fighter finds young hopeful in a fighting pit. Retired fighter recruits young fighter for a battle school. Young fighter is awesome. Retired fighter discovers why young fighter is awesome, rocks young fighter's life with the truth. The obvious parallel is to Ender's Game - especially with a young boy going to a fight school, but more like if Ender had been sent to a Japanese judo school and learned to fight. It also had a bit of a Matrix type feel to it, especially with the hyper-realistic simulations. The FightingThere were many elements of jiu jitsu, judo, and grappling in this, with the school levels being white, blue, purple, brown, black, and red; the many "OSSS"s that characters uttered; the pieces of martial arts wisdom such as "You may need to give up position to gain position," and the fighting jargon. The vocabulary in this book was highly specific. This makes the fight scenes very easy to follow if you know fighting terminology, and potentially confusing if you don't. Cego shrimped his hips out, circling his legs around Farmer's knee and shooting his hand in for an underhook. Farmer allowed him to take the underhook, fishing his own overhook under Cego's armpit and through to the other side of his neck, countering with the brabo choke. Cego felt the pressure on his neck and shrimped out the other way.The ScifiThis story was enhanced by it being set in a scifi universe, and the main plot point about why the main character is special required a universe with this type of science. Watching a fight and being able to see all the person's biometrics displayed - being able to see heartrate, images of skeletons and muscles, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure - all things I could see them showing on a UFC fight were this technology available. Having a fight ring that influenced a fighter in various ways - confidence, speed, etc, simply by which element it was made of. Having physical simulations to help train students to be better fighters. All these elements greatly enhanced the fighting storyline. There was also a deeply embedded theme of "Light/Darkness" - purelights vs lacklights, the scifi swear word "darkin'," and even some beings of light - spectrals. My ReviewI most enjoyed the storyline, and the integration of scifi with fighting. I thought they both enhanced one another quite well. It was imaginative, and even though there were very familiar themes present in many scifi stories, it was unique. I thought the final 1/3 of the book was much more interesting than the first 1/3, and I thought the ending was both satisfying and interesting, and it made me want to go back and reread the first part of the book. There were a few points I disliked. I honestly thought the boy was in his 20s, and it felt jarring to realize he was 13. The character was NOT written like a typical 13 year old - he was far too wise for his age, and missed a lot of the common faults that 13 year olds have. I also sometimes had trouble transitioning from one main character to the next, but this could be me reading at night when I was tired. Finally, I have zero idea why there were "spectrals" - beings of light - not a clue what purpose they served, why they were there, etc.DisclosureThe author sent this book to me for the purpose of a review. I did not receive any compensation, nor did I promise a good review. I have no connection to the author other than sharing the same hobby, Jiu Jitsu.
