About the Author Grigori Melnik is a Principal Product Manager at Splunk focusing on the Splunk Developer Platform. He helps software engineers embrace good practices and fosters software craftsmanship. Formerly at Microsoft, he produced patterns & practices components as well as architectural guidance to address common cross-cutting software engineering concerns. He also drove the Design for IT Efficiency imperative. Prior to that, he was a researcher and developer — long enough ago to remember the joy of programming in Fortran. He is an Associate Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Software magazine and an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Calgary, Canada. He speaks around the world on the topics of operational and business intelligence, code reuse, cloud computing, agile methods, and software testing. He has a background in in software development, IT training, and content creation for developers, architects, and IT professionals. Previously, in addition to working with Splunk, he has co-authored a number of books with the Microsoft patterns and practices team. His current area of interest is the Internet of Things. David Foster is an experienced Splunk developer who has worked on several Splunk apps (Exchange, VMware, Twitter, Flurry) and on the Splunk platform itself (Splunk Web Framework, several SDKs). Beyond Splunk, David has been developing software over 20 years in a wide variety of languages and environments. Currently David is engaged with inspiring the next generation of grade schoolers to write their own computer programs. Liying Jiang is a software engineer in Splunk. She joined Splunk in 2013 and has worked in the Splunk Seattle QA team since then. She has helped to ship Splunk 6 and various Splunk SDKs and apps. Before Splunk, Liying worked at Microsoft for seven years as a member of SQL Server, Office 365 billing and Commerce catalog teams.

Building Splunk Solutions is an excellent guide to solutions development By Michael Szebenyi Building Splunk Solutions is an excellent guide to solutions development. This is not only a breakdown of the components that go into an app but also gives an ideal story of the app SLDC. It explains design, development, test and release giving excellent examples and insights for each. A must have for anyone building on top of the Splunk platform.

By Nick I've been using Splunk for a variety of use cases for years now and I've had to learn a lot of application development lessons the hard way. What the team has put together in this text is more than just a great resource for both novice and advanced Splunk developers but they've created a framework for how to approach the process from ideation to deployment.The text addresses more than just a standard set of best practices for developing a new application, it takes the user through the process of setting up everything from a thoughtful versioning environment to writing and analyzing several test cases. Along the way the team has also provided insight into the journey. Where most technical how-tos merely give you the final optimized product, this book shows the development process warts and all which, for me, provided both a technical roadmap as well as encouragement to keep going when I reached my own blocks.

The go-to reference guide to building a sophisticated and attractive solution on top of Splunk By Stefan Sievert I couldn't agree more with what was already said in the other reviews. The book deserves the title "Guide" more than a large number of other technology related guides I have read throughout my career.From not boring the reader with regurgitating required prerequisite knowledge that the audience for this book is assumed to have, to the very structured and holistic approach the guide takes to walking you through the complete process of building a solution on top of the Splunk platform, this is a very refreshing read.Top top it off, the fully functional reference app that is being developed is available as a working download from the Splunk Apps website (apps.splunk.com), so the reader can follow along from the get go and playing around with the code base for the app.What I like best is that the authors use distinct icons throughout the book when adding expert comments that allow you to determine for which audience or for which step in the journey the comment is important. These experts cover all aspects of the solution development process, from developers and architects, to UX designers and business users all the way to test and release managers. You never loose focus on your journey using these comments throughout the books; very well done!I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to or needs to venture into building feature-rich solutions with attractive UI elements on top of the core Splunk platform!
