After decades of training under his mentor Gildor, Kian Cardan walks out of the Blue Dagger Mountains with little on his mind but a strong desire to return home. Now a master of the ancient techniques of the Elven warriors, the time has come for him to defend the weak, and combat ever present forces of evil. But a cruel welcome awaits him, and he soon falls into the company of K’xarr and Cromwell, two mercenaries who appear to be harbouring a dangerous secret. Hard times have befallen the kingdom of Bandara, and when the king dies the crown is passed to the princess Raygan, instead of her older, more ambitious brother. With war drums beating in neighboring Abberdon, and sinister schemes festering within the castle walls, the Princess Raygan turns to the three unlikely allies for salvation. Only time will tell if the courage in Kian’s heart is great enough to overcome the growing darkness in his soul. As an avid reader of this genre, I can say with the upmost confidence this is the best I've read yet. With fight scenes so detailed and so perfectly written I felt as if I were in the middle of the carnage myself. The characters are so diverse and full of background I could actually see their whole life as I read each chapter, and began to rrally feel as if I knew them. This riveting book is difficult to put down, and even more difficult to conure up the patience for the second book to come out! Strongly recommended if you are into books written for men and not boys.

There are some issues with the book - the depth of the characters varies a lot, especially in the first third of the book where the band of warriors are fairly complex characters but the princess and prince are extremely one-dimensional. As the story moves on characters often change too suddenly, like one moment one character clearly doesn't trust or like another and 10 pages later takes a risky stand supporting that character to 110%.The author could probably have done a better job pulling the different plots in the same direction, now many of the plots "break the flow" of the main story; I was especially annoyed with how a sorcerer was allowed to just teleport in and kidnap characters multiple times, teleporting them a great distance away so other characters had to travel a long way to save them (nevermind that there doesn't seem to be anything preventing the sorcerer from teleporting again). Overall I felt there were too many plots and that they were not as integrated as they should have been to form one big, coherent plot.Personally I don't care much for graphical rape and sexual torture in my books; It also feels a bit cheap to have such one-dimensional villains and weird considering how the author has the protagonist struggling with his "dark side".With all that said I can still recommend the book - just take all the 5 star ratings with a pinch of salt.

I'm an avid fantasy reader and I pick up a new novel or book every couple of weeks or each month. I picked this up last week and I couldn't put it down!I really enjoyed the writing style, especially for the combat scenes. I found the writing very concise and simply descriptive. I find with many authors it is nearly impossible to understand what is happening in combat scenes and I just can't visualize it well. I was able to really see everything happening in my head as I read Gods of Blood and Fire.I also found that most of the characters didn't fit into standard fantasy archetypes, which was extremely refreshing. There was also some really incredible (and very dark) character development which took some of the characters in directions that I could not have foreseen at all.I highly recommend this book to any fantasy reader - I hope this author gets a good following so we can get more of this series!
