Are dreams mere fantasy, or are they real?

When Mary Parker finds a magic book everything in her life changes. As she reads, she dreams, and the woman sunk in depression after her mother’s death is transformed to a vibrant beauty. She gives the book and the phenomenon a name, 'falling awake’. The book seems to twist others to act out of character too. Joe’s usually dour father turns visionary and gambles with the factory where Mary works, and Joe, the metaphysical daydreamer, engages in a secret sexual eternal triangle to keep the dull routine of the accounts department at bay. The dominant partner in the triangle is Clem; dark and dangerous.

Extricating himself from Clem, Joe meets Mary. They fall in love and their marriage is arranged in haste when Mary falls pregnant, but this is no happy ever after tale. Their joy turns to grief when Mary miscarries and she turns inward to her darkening 'falling awake' world – now more psychic than real. Then Joe's father dies, and he has to fight for control of the factory. He falls into Clem’s clutches again, and to make things worse, he believes Mary is going mad, and the people and places she remembers all just dreams dreamt inside her insanity.

But then how can Joe remember them too?

Magic or madness? Karma or crazy? For Mary and Joe, the impossible - and the deadly ghosts of their dreams - are only a breath away.

Falling Awake is a dark paranormal romance thriller about a girl, a book, love and loss, mental illness, mystery and magic.

“In the best traditions of Audrey Niffenegger and Carlos Ruiz Zafón.”

“Mind-blowing, real, or unreal? Possible or incredible? Simply brilliant!”

“A superb piece of literary fiction.”

About the Author Debrah Martin describes herself as the ultimate multi-tasker. ‘Sometimes I even have to remind myself who I am for the day,’ she admits. That’s because she writes under three different pen names and in three very different genres. As Debrah Martin she writes literary fiction. Falling Awake is a dream-like tale where truth IS stranger than fiction. She also plots fast-paced and compelling thrillers as D.B. Martin, with the first in the Patchwork trilogy, Patchwork Man, out on now and the sequel following in September 2014. Its fallen hero, Lawrence Juste QC faces a future as tricky as his past when his previous misdeeds catch up with him and his dead wife blackmails him, apparently from beyond the grave. The second in the series, Patchwork People twists the knife even further when it’s released at the end of September 2014. And not to be overlooked is her YA teen detective series, penned as Lily Stuart – THE teen detective. Irreverent, blunt, funny and vulnerable, Lily’s diary tells the tale of her mother’s internet dating spree – and the murderer she meets, interspersed between daily life as a teenager, with all its bitching, banter, and vulnerability. Webs is also due to be released in September 2014. So why not stick to just one name and one genre? ‘Variety is the spice of life,’ she replies. ‘And I have all these ideas – they have to come out somehow!’ Debrah’s past careers have spanned two businesses, teaching, running business networking for the University of Winchester and social event management. She now makes do with chairing the Wantage (not just Betjeman) Literary Festival in her hometown when she’s not writing. She also has two daughters and a dog to organise. ‘See – more multi-tasking!’ You can find out about all of her books and latest releases on her websites www.debrahmartin.co.uk and www.lily-stuart.co.uk

A fantastical dream like story By H.Taylor Falling Awake is most certainly a book that gets you page turning as quickly as you can to see where this fascinating adventure ends. We are introduced to Mary Parker who comes across a magic book that consequently changes her entire life. Mary is in a very dark depressed state after the death of her Mother but from reading the magic book she finds her life and herself are transformed into a beauty. The reader sees that as she reads this book she begins to dream. With this new found beauty Mary meets Joe, the son of a factory owner who gambles it. Joe and Mary fall madly in love and find themselves in a secret sexual love triangle. Joe proposes to Mary and they have to have a shot gun wedding due to them discovering Mary is expecting a baby. But this book has several twists and turns as well as a couple of tragedies. Joe worries his wife is going mad by the things she recalls but the part he can't understand is if it's not true why does he have the same memories.I thought it might become a little busy and confusing with so much happening but I was happy to find it worked well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hadn't read any by Debrah Martin before but I look forward to reading her other work. Recommended highly!

Falling Awake by Debrah Martin is a beautiful work of fiction that combines both the conscious and unconscious thoughts and actions of the main character Mary Parker. Mary finds herself in a state of deep depression following the death of her mother. She finds a magical book that awakens such unconscious thoughts within her that at times she has trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy. This problem reminded me of an incident that happened to me several years ago. I was reading a series of books that combined reality and fantasy. I had fallen asleep reading, and deep in the night the telephone rang. My wife answered it, and tried to awaken me. For several minutes, I thought I was in the alternate reality that I had been reading about. Finally, I came to myself and was able to talk.Martin is surely a multi talented writer, and that is easily seen by looking at the list of books she has authored. While reading this book full of well developed characters, I wondered, who hasn't found that magical book that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy? If you haven't found it yet, 'Falling Awake' may be the one that 'awakens' that feeling in you.

I love plays upon words and this was not the exception. Morever, the cover gave me a peaceful and pleasant sensation.Mary Parker is a woman sunk in depression as a result of the loss of her mother, but a magical book she finds changes her whole life- she becomes alive again, and because she reads and dreams, she calls the book's quality falling awake. Strange things start to happen. Things start to change. The kind of paranormal touch given by the magic book adds mystery and makes the whole story more interesting. The plot development was good, and the develpment of the characters is rich and complete. By the time Joe meets Mary, from my point of view, the story has reached a peak, and then when she loses her pregnancy everything starts going down. Of this sad event, I liked that it doesn't portray the classic fairytale where everything goes perfectly well.I recommend this read to those who like romance story with a little bit of paranormal and sci-fi.
