"There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person," declared the philosopher and wit G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936). The extent and variety of the author's writings ― comprising journalism, history, biography, apologetics, poetry, plays, and detective fiction ― attest to his own diversity of enthusiasms. This rich and thought-provoking anthology draws from Chesterton's vast treasury of publications to present his most trenchant observations on education, humor, literature, religion, politics, class, and other topics.Editor Bob Blaisdell offers an insightful introduction to Chesterton's life and works and identifies the source of each quotation. Organized thematically, the quotes range from quips from Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries ("The most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen.") and novels ("Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should decline.") to his newspaper columns ("An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.") and essays ("No man must be superior to the things that are common to men.… Not only are we all in the same boat, but we are all seasick.")."If you're a fan of Chesterton's writing than this quote collection will be great for you. Blaisdell's introduction is also very interesting. The kind of book that would do great on a coffee table, ready to be picked up and browsed through at random times." — A Universe in Words

Before I get to that, let me say why I bought this book (and another copy for a friend). I read the shred Amazon lets you read without buying it, not from the quotes, but from the introduction by Bob Blaisdell, and was greatly impressed by his way of proceeding. Collections of Chesterton quotes, one-liners, paragraphs, essays, and entire chapters lifted from books have been coming out for a century, some of them very good. This one fits well in the line of Dover thrift editions, books which are small enough, and inexpensive enough, to lure any literate soul into picking up that book they always meant to read, or dipping into that author they always wondered about, or taking another chance on someone who's short story was in the anthology in English 101. In so doing, Blaisdell has done something many of these other editors could not, produced a slim volume equally enticing to new readers who say "G.K. who?" as to the avid coterie of seasoned readers whose favorite pastime is to quote him. What's Right?1. It only costs $4.,2. It's just under 150 pages (not too big, not too small).3. It's a standard literary-sized paperback, and won't get lost on the bookshelf.,4. It begins with a five page "Note" which includes a brief bio and the excellent introduction.,5. Then follows a brief bibliography of Chesterton books, including those reprinted by Dover.6. The quotes are gathered under topical headings (they have to be gathered somehow).7. The first heading is "Aphorisms", which really means seven pages of one-liners or bon mots. A very good place to start.8. Each quote has the book it's from and the date that book was first published.9. If the quote is from an essay, it gives the book the essay was collected in, so one could find that collection.10.The editor says that due to copyright reasons, there aren't many quotes after 1922. This is significant, as that is the same date on which Chesterton was received into the Roman Catholic Church. One often hears he didn't write anything after that time, or at least anything good. Blaisdell's bibliography shows this is not the case, but he's the first to give this real reason of the copyright. Obviously, publishers would prefer not to pay for copyrighted work when they can have at earlier material. One very good book, in my view, which was written for obvious reasons after 1922, is "Conversion and the Catholic Church". One of his most famous works, "The Everlasting Man", was published after that time, in 1925, as were many of his best short detective stories.

Chesterton in an episode of Criminal Minds that has always haunted me: "Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed." I knew then that I must find out more about and read some of Chesterton's work.G.k. Chesterton Quotes is a great place to start because it gives you a glimpse into all of his writing- the fiction, the biographies, the poetry, the philosophy. I recommend it to all who are interested in learning more about Chesterton or even for those well familiar with his writing who want to reminisce.
