In a nation still recovering from the nuclear tragedies of forty years earlier, Clyde is working a dead-end guaranteed job at a diner, and Moonis is incarcerated in a Labor Camp for the Malcontented. But when Moonis’s sister, Cecily, goes missing, the old friends escape their prisons to search for her in post-fallout America.

Moonis and Clyde follow Cecily’s trail until it leads them into the atomic-ravaged heart of the Midwest, an outlaw territory of dark legends and darker truths where Cecily is being held captive by a brutal gang lord.

But along with menace and death, this poisoned wasteland contains the possibility of a freedom beyond imagination—if only Moonis and Clyde, and the misfits who join their quest, can find the heroism to grab hold of it.

Everybody's doing what they think they're supposed to do. - Jack Kerouac By Cheryl Stout It is the early 1960s and through a comedy of errors, the United States is bombed by Russia and a good portion of the Midwest is a nuclear wasteland. South of the Dakotas and west of the now-dead Mississippi River are the D-Lands, desolate and full of renegades, not wanting to be relocated by the government. The government has stepped in and promised everyone education, health care, housing, and a "guaranteed job" at a living wage. In the New America, work is not only guaranteed but required. In this new reality it's now forty years later. Clyde Sparrow has his guaranteed job at a diner, barely scraping by. His best friend from high school is Moonis Fell, now incarcerated in a LCM (Labor Camp for the Malcontented). And Cecily Fell, Moonis' sister has been carried off by raiders - and Moonis and Clyde need to rescue her. This is quite a story. It reminded me of Joe Lansdale's THE DRIVE-IN with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID thrown in for good measure - a psychedelic extravaganza with bigger-than-life characters and happenings that stretch the imagination to its breaking point.I enjoyed this romp and rescue story - except the ending which fell off like lemmings off a cliff, quickly and abruptly.NOTE: I received this book from Thomas and Mercer through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

Since then, he has penned the acclaimed series featuring Victor Carl, which has drawn comparisons to Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos. His most recent work, GUARANTEED HEROES, is quite a departure from his prior releases. This is not a crime drama or courtroom thriller but rather a futuristic story set firmly within the science fiction genre. We witness a United States 40 years after it was devastated by nuclear bombs. This world is both dystopian and surreal yet frighteningly familiar. The focus is on two protagonists. The first is Moonis Fell, a man incarcerated in a Labor Camp for the Malcontented. The nation has lots of different “prisons,” and Moonis is one of many inmates who wants to escape. The other character is Clyde Sparrow, who works a dead-end job at a diner passing out meals to his customers with little enthusiasm. The government has deemed his job a guaranteed one, so he should be satisfied with that. But Clyde has greater aspirations, not all of which are legal. He does side jobs as a drug trafficker while continuing to look for a way out of his current circumstances. It's just a matter of time before these two old friends are reunited. What will bring them together is a rescue mission. Moonis' sister, Cecily, has gone missing, and the fear is that she is being held captive by a psychotic gang lord named Raden. The newly escaped prisoner, Moonis, and his old friend and one-time flame of Cecily's, Clyde, must travel into the unchartered and burnt-out center of the country to find Cecily and escape the wastelands with their lives intact.Cecily believes that only Moonis is capable of saving her. When word gets to her that Moonis and Clyde may be after her, she worries that they will not be able to overcome Raden and his forces and thus fears the worst for them. However, there is not much that can deter them as each has seen time inside various prison camps, which has built in them a fearless nature that will not allow them to quit a task regardless of the danger they may face.Watching as Moonis and Clyde make their epic trek into the wasted terrain known as the D-Lands is reminiscent of many other works of fiction that involve dangerous quests. The difference here is recognizing the fine line between heroism and having a death wish. Lashner has penned a compelling and unique novel in which he includes a number of historical influences like Louis Armstrong, Janis Joplin and Dashiell Hammett. This diverse list demonstrates just how interesting GUARANTEED HEROES is.Reviewed by Ray Palen

Lashner breaks the mold on this one by inventing a different United States than one we would ever envision: a US where the Midwest has been bombed into nuclear desolation by the Russians, and a new “guaranteed employment” federal government has taken over. The wasteland in the Midwest has been “disincorporated” and the residents forced across the Mississippi into have and have not groups. Enter the moteliest crew of “heroes” that you can imagine, who set out to rescue one of the main character’s sister from the clutches of the gang leader of the disincorporated lands. The book sets a pretty depressing tone amidst all of the desolation, and I almost gave up on it midway through. But it was like the “train wreck” that you just can’t help witnessing. Was this a book of genius by Lashner or was he delusional? The story goes from one unbelievable scene to another; each seeming more desperate than the other. But the book builds to a fantasmic climax that leaves the reader to figure out what will happen when the (irradiated) dust settles. If you want to stretch your imagination, and can wade through the depressing aspects of the book, this could be an interesting read.
