Padua, Italy. An unremarkable man, a husband and father, disappears without a trace. After a few months of searching, the police send his file to the cold cases department to be thrown in with the files of other missing persons. One woman knows the truth about his disappearance, but, being the daughter of a prominent and wealthy Swiss industrialist she fears coming forward with what she knows: that she was his lover and that there is more to his disappearance than another bored suburban husband running out on his. Stricken by guilt, she finally confides in a lawyer who advises her to turn to Marco Buratti, aka The Alligator, for help. Buratti agrees to assist the woman. Initially, the case of the woman’s missing lover seems like a lost cause, but a clue puts the Alligator and his trusted associates, Max the Memory and Beniamino Rossini, on the trail of the unscrupulous and brilliant criminal, Giorgio Pellegrini, protagonist of The Goodbye Kiss and At the End of a Dull Day. The deadly game of chicken in which the good guys and the bad guys are often hard to tell apart is Carlotto’s specialty. But good or bad, these men are survivors in a world where the once ironclad criminal codes of conduct are disappearing and new criminal syndicates do vicious battle with old.

Review “…a shaded caper and an earnest investigation into the nature of evil that reads like a runaway train, and confirms Carlotto as equal to any of the English-writing czars of noir.” – Maxim Jakubowski, LoveReading (UK)   “Gang of Lovers is Italian “hard boiled” noir but with the shell left on.” – Crime Scraps ReviewPraise for Massimo Carlotto   “Hard stuff, but good.” – Library Journal   “Italian hardboiled noir at its best.” – Raven Crime Reads   “[Carlotto’s] narration allows gruesome glimpses into an unscrupulous psyche.” – Publishers Weekly   “Carlotto provides a machine-gun pace, a jaundiced eye for political corruption and a refreshing absence of anything approaching a moral vision.” – Kirkus Reviews   “Full of noir swagger.” – The Complete Review

About the Author Massimo Carlotto was born in Padua, Italy. In addition to the many titles in his extremely popular Alligator series, he is also the author of The Fugitive, Death's Dark Abyss, Poisonville, Bandit Love, and At the End of a Dull Day.

Alligator v Pellegrini, Carlotta's 2 great creations clash in the modern Italian underworld By Amazon Customer A must for his fans because in this novel the respective protagonists from his two primary novel series clash in spectacular fashion. Pellegrini, the suave arch criminal anti-hero sociopath of At the End of a Dull Day, and "the Alligator", the noble ex-con righting wrongs as a freelance private detective of last resort for the desperate and morally compromised that this novel is the latest of in a longer series, are thrust together in the context of a wealthy married woman's quest for her missing ex-lover. The Alligator's investigation leads him to the heretofore seemingly untouchable and unshakeable Pellegrini. I'm not going to ruin the novel with further details, but suffice it to say that the usual background of extreme moral and social decay in modern Italy highlights another pitch black tale full of multi-faceted characters either struggling against or with the society's dominant criminal element.Once again, little sign that this is a translated work despite authentic immersion in Italian society that is always eye opening.
