2002, Australia: When Melissa discovers a postcard addressed to "Desmond" among her recently deceased father's effects, she is determined to discover this person's identity and his relationship to her father. She soon embarks on a journey that will take her across oceans and into the past....

1930's, London: Caroline grew on a secluded Scottish estate with her "Aunt" Phoebe. Now, the shocking realisation that Phoebe is actually her mother fuels a rebellious streak in Caroline, who elopes to Cairo to get married. But her marriage quickly turns sour and leads to an affair with an old lover, and to a baby boy, Desmond. With her personal life in tatters and WWII approaching, she volunteers as a secret agent, smuggling valuable information into Europe for the British government.

When Caroline finally returns from the war, Desmond is gone; he was secretly taken to Australia by his nanny years before. Will Caroline be able to track him down? And how will her journey to find her son lead to Melissa's mission to uncover her father's past?

The beginning sets up a family situation which begs for resolution. From that point the action switches to another continent with a completely different set of characters, although the reader suspects that a connection will be made with the characters at the beginning of the book. Callie is the focus from this point forward. We learn a great deal about Callie, her youth, her relationship with her mother, her desire to be useful during WWII. Callie's life has many conflicts which she confronts bravely. Eventually the connection is made between the family from the book's beginning and Callie's family.I liked the way both Callie and her mother reacted similarly to major events. I liked the way the aunt's talents seemed to have been passed on to her great niece. This was a good book. I was so happy to meet characters which I would have liked to have known personally.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. great read By R.I,Prophet Excellent read. Great story spanning over 3 generations. All the characters are so humain, with deep hurts, misunderstandings and the flaw not to forgive. The journey is painful but the reward is that love can overcome difficulties.

The Postcard is her latest work.Set in present day, South Australia and London, UK, the reader is quickly transported back in time to 1923 and post WWI Britain. There we meet Caroline (Callie) Seton-Ross and her Aunt Phee at Dalradnor, their home in the wild moors of Scotland.Dalradnor is where Callie starts her fascinating and sometimes frightening journey through a life of not only privilege, but impoverishment and suffering. Through it all, however, one thing keeps Callie going, the thought of her son, Desmond. There are several wonderful sub-plots to this fascinating story all woven into the main plot with the skill of an accomplished writer. The reader can look forward to a fascinating and enjoyable read travelling page by page through both countries and time, not to mention the mystery behind “the postcard”!
