A funny, heartfelt, perfectly pitched story about misunderstandings and the importance of true friendship.

When a little girl thinks that her best friend James has been saying bad things about her behind her back, she takes action in the form of the silent treatment. As they go about their day and James tries harder and harder to get her to talk to him, they both realize that true friendship surpasses any rumor... or misunderstanding.

A classic childhood situation is brought to life with humor and poignancy with energetic illustrations by Matt Myers and a simple, telling text by Liz Rosenberg.

What James Said, by Liz Rosenberg

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Telephone is a game that many children have enjoyed for generations—that is, when the game is intentional. But what about when something gets passed from person to person and it isn't fun for everyone involved? In Rosenberg's charming picture book, a girl is upset by what she perceives to be a derogatory comment coming from her best friend. James has never treated her unkindly before, which makes the comment even more surprising. Through some persistence, some patience, and even some luck, she finally unveils "what James said" and realizes how she misinterpreted it. This simple story will resonate with young readers who are learning to navigate the tricky waters of friendship. Myers's illustrations are created with "cheap ballpoint pen and watercolor." Don't let the description dissuade—they are simply delightful. Sprinkled with additional childlike embellishments, the realistic artwork shows great emotion and detail that will engage the intended audience. A clever read that can be shared with a group and is perfect for independent reading. VERDICT Witty, relatable, and a great purchase for children in any setting.—Megan Egbert, Meridian Library District, ID

By Janet Hamilton Summary: The narrator is in a fight with her best friend James because James said that she thinks she’s perfect. How does she know? Because James told Aiden, who told Hunter, who told Katie, who told Dante, who told Anna, who told Emily, Anna, and Declan, who told his little sister, who told the narrator. Now she is mad at James and won’t be friends again, even though he tries to find out what’s wrong and is extra-nice to her. At the end of the day, there’s a big art show. The narrator’s painting is on display. “It’s perfect,” says James. “That’s what I tell everyone.” The misunderstanding is uncovered, and the narrator is so happy, she doesn’t hear the art teacher announcing her name as the winner for Best in Show. When she finally gets her ribbon, she changes it to Best of Friends, which is what she and James are once again. Ages 4-8.Pros: An entertaining look at the damaging effects of rumors and gossip. The big, bright illustrations, decorated with children’s handprints and other artwork, complement the story perfectly.Cons: I think someone owes James an apology.

Cute story about the ups and downs of friendships By BrittyMama This is a sweet story of two best friends and a (one sided) misunderstanding between them that threatens their friendship. A rumor gets passed around that our heroine thinks she is perfect and she gives him the silent treatment. Poor James tries and tries to cheer up his friend, not realizing they are in a fight. After a while, the girl realizes she misses James' friendship. Most children will be able to relate to this story and the ups and downs that friendships have and that sometimes you shouldn't believe everything you hear. The illustrations are fantastic- very real and very expressive.

She loved it and so did her daughter, Iris, who will be born in September :-). The story of James makes you remember how hard it is to be a kid and what a joy it is to have a great friend when you are in need. I can't wait to read it again to Iris when she can see the pictures as well as hear the words!

Boyd Craven Jr brings the characters alive with their own unique personalities. I appreciate the way he weaves in common sense, factual information and many other hints of knowledge into his story line. Boyd Craven Jr entire Apocalypse series, beginning with the first book is a great read.

The Tribe 2 By Michelle I feel like i am reading a collection of short stories instead of full length books, episodes I guess is the new way of writing. T he good side of that is you don't need more than an hour or so to finish, the bad part is that you start getting into the story and suddenly it's done. It leaves me wanting...

The setting (an oil rig is ground zero for this variation of a zombie outbreak), the tech (one character boasts a cool bionic arm and the heroes navigate the seas in a badass science vessel) and the creatures themselves (let's just say these monsters are familiar yet feature a few cool new twists). All the toys and science are cutting edge yet grounded and believable. This is part action-adventure at the high seas blended with the intensity of a post-apoc survival story. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, pulpy thrill ride. The testosterone-fest even has room for a couple of badass female characters and a conspiracy. A worthy addition to the genre.

17 of 21 people found the following review helpful. another GREAT story by Anthony J. Melchiorri!!! By Julie Blaskie This book is AMAZING! I couldn't put it down as I just HAD to know what would happen next! The story opens with a lab demonstration in Japan, using prisoners of war. The aim is to create a horrific bioweapon to seek revenge for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki... Then we meet Meredith, a middle-aged womani in the CIA... she finds something that doesn't add up. She calls Dom Holland and his Hunters to investigate... and there are outbreaks of violence occurring in major cities...Anthony Melchiorri side steps into a different type of zombie story but remains true to himself in that there are biotechnologies responsible. He is one my favorite new authors who writes stories that are different but with real people as heroes. The writing is smooth and solid, the characters are well-developed and very memorable, the action goes into breakneck speed, and the story is a different take on the usual zombie stories. We are taken to somewhere in Japan, to an abandoned oil rig, and then back to Maryland. It's great to see an older woman as a lead character who seeks the truth no matter what happens to her. Meredith is someone you know you can trust and rely upon when all heck is breaking loose! Dom Holland is a true Patriot who makes it his life career to defend the US and its citizens from any and all attacks by chemical or biological weapons. Even Dom's daughter Kara and their golden retriever Maggie rise to the occasion to protect the weaker people around them. There are other characters who capture your heart and have you hoping they will achieve what they hope to achieve... find what is causing the "Skulls" (like armored zombies) and then race for the cure...The story was a great read! I found myself thinking "just ONE more chapter and I'll go to bed"... Well, I stayed up well past my bedtime because the suspense of waiting to read another time was just too great of an attraction to fight against! I enjoyed the fact that the zombie idea took a different turn and opened us up to new possibilities. Again, the science behind the creation and the efforts to identify and hopefully at least treat it was explained so we can understand and enjoy the story more. I will definitely reread this story (and hopefully be able to exert a little restaint and respect my bedtime!) because it was so wonderful and I was so caught up that I hated to reach the end! Waiting for a sequel will be agony!!!Do you like stories that are different and intelligent? Do you like being taken away on a race against time? Do you enjoy reading stories where your characters rise to face an army of incredibly horrible creatures? If you answered yes, to even one of these questions, you MUST read this book! Be prepared to have a groggy morning because you couldn't put it down because of all the excitement! (Ok, extra coffee may be needed!) Get this book and have a great read!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Hunters vs Skulls - who will win?? By Karen Arrowood 4.5 stars!I love medical thrillers, and Anthony J. Melchiorri does a superb job of combining that genre with cutting edge biotechnology. In this book he takes it one step further, using his expertise to engineer a biological weapon that turns ordinary people into horrific zombie-like creatures ("Skulls") and ushers in an apocolyptic world-wide event. From World War II-era Japan to present day USA, The Tide is a fast paced, intense thriller. Mr. Melchiorri's characters are well-crafted and the scenario he presents is hauntingly plausible. I pray we never experience anything even remotely similar. This book was creepy-scary to me. Several times in the first half of the book, I had to put it down and walk away for a while; I certainly had difficulty reading it at night! But it was sooo good that I had to finish it :-) Pre-ordering book 2 now....

A journalist in modern New York stumbles across a story from a century earlier when the streets of Dublin were ablaze as men and women fought valiantly for liberation from the British Empire. This is the story of three women. Mary Doyle was reared by nuns and knows nothing of her parents, except that they were a source of shame. Arriving to Dublin in 1913 at just eighteen years old, she is resigned to facing a lifetime of domestic service. Instead, however, her eyes are opened to the political and social turmoil of a fledgling nation struggling for independence. Suddenly, all that was once inevitable is no longer a certainty as she is embroiled in the very heart of the Easter Rising. Scarlett O’Hara has overcome many hurdles to get where she is today, not least her name. A successful political analyst, on a reputable New York broadsheet, her seemingly perfect existence goes up in a blaze of media headlines when she makes one catastrophic error of judgement. As she tries to rebuild her life from the wreckage, she has no option but to start at the very beginning again. Eileen Chiarello is ninety-three years old and she has a story that will draw her back to Ireland, the land her parents fought for and loved so passionately. A chance meeting with Scarlett gives her the opportunity to fulfil a promise she feared she never could. Shadow of a Century is the story of three women, whose stories are inextricably linked over the span of a century.

War and Respite By Kenneth Robson This historical novel is an intertwining story of two cities New York, and Dublin, and two personalities, attractive young New York political journalist Scarlet O'Hara, and the elderly spinster Eileen Chiarello, whose parents were brave volunteers and participants in the Irish uprising of Easter 1916. This historic event led to years of violence and turmoil in Ireland for the right of the country to determine their own destiny.I loved reading Jean Grainger's third novel. Her account of dramatic events is moving without being exaggerated. Sure it is written from an Irish perspective, but it is written with considerable insight and great sensitivity. A more peaceful world will only come with greater understanding of other viewpoints and justice for disadvantaged minorities. May that which unites mankind triumph over that which divides our world into warring groups.I wished that there were foot-notes or a glossary at the end to translate and assist in the pronunciation of the Irish names and words. Although there is much historical detail in the text, I would have found an historical appendix of considerable interest.

She seemed very naive, and almost teenager-ish, but as the story went on and the author started a whole new story, I got very interested in it. The author weaved the past with the present so beautifully that after Scarlett met with Eileen Chiarello, I was hooked! I wanted to know more about Eileen. Our protagonist (Scarlett) grows and matures. I also learned a lot about the Irish Revolution of 1916 through Mary, Mrs. Kearns, Mrs. Grant and Rory, and what the people of that time went through. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great book.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. A good read By JRPinet Scarlett O'Hara is an up and coming journalist until she makes the mistake of having an affair with a very public figure. Her previous editor tries to help her get back on her feet. The seemingly small story he ask her to cover regarding an attempted burglary on a 93 year old woman, Eileen, proves to be her lifeline and redemption. Eileen has a history worth telling and the friendship that develops between Scarlett and Eileen helps them both to achieve want they need at this time in their livesThe characters in this novel have such depth and are easy to like and cheer for. The history of the rift between Ireland and England as told from the Irish perspective brings to life what families were willing to fight for and believe in. There is romance but this book is mostly about family ties, friendships, history, forgiveness and coming full circle. A good read.

The flyer reads, “One dark mulatto runaway, aged fourteen, well dressed and bright…” Blanche thinks he has it good. He has risen above the field hands to a position helping run a printing press. He’s well fed, never physically mistreated, and he has taught himself to read, though he keeps the illicit skill a secret. Most importantly, he has been promised a chance at emancipation. Then, in a single bloody morning, his world is overturned, his master lies dead, and his widow has no intention of following through with her husband’s promise to free him. Blanche would never have considered running away from his old life, but faced with the prospect of being sold as a laborer or worse, he forges his free papers and flees north, a fugitive, to create his own future. Only a few steps ahead of the slave catchers, he travels hundreds of miles across the violent backdrop of “bleeding Kansas” in the 1850s, a land torn by apart by two very different visions of humanity. This richly researched work of fiction weaves actual historical characters and institutions into the gripping story of a young man born into slavery but resolute in his quest for freedom.

Good piece of historical fiction set in "Bleeding Kansas" By DWD's Reviews In many ways, the fight over whether Kansas would be a slave state or a free state was the first fighting of the Civil War.In a shortsighted move, the Congress of the United States decided to let the Kansas Territory decide for itself if it wanted to be a slave or a free state. It was shortsighted because it put off a festering political problem and let it be decided in a far away territory with little thought to what would happen in that territory. Immediately, this became a real-life struggle, the physical embodiment of the arguments taking place across the country about slavery and its future. Slave states rightly determined that they needed to bring Kansas in as a slave state and they immediately sent financial backing to support pro-slavery settlers and pro-slavery men from neighboring Missouri who would cross the border and illegally vote in the election.Abolitionists sent settlers, financial aid and weapons to counter. Soon enough, neighbor was fighting neighbor (John Brown of the infamous Harper's Ferry raid got his start here by killing a number of his pro-slavery neighbors with broadswords) and a series of tainted elections were held. Multiple governments claimed to be in charge of the state, multiple federal investigations resulted in nothing but contradictory conclusions, depending on the political affiliations of the investigators. This book starts in Missouri, very close to the border with Kansas. Blanche is a slave working for the local newspaper owner. The town is in an uproar due to its proximity to Kansas. Men are planning to illegally vote one side or another, arms are being sent across the border and ugly fights and arguments are breaking out everywhere.Blanche is not happy being a slave but figures that he has got things all figured out and will eventually be free due to his careful manipulation of the slave system. He can read, is free to work on the side for extra cash and is confident that he is superior to any field hand slave.Blanche's plan is simple - he will work for the cash to pay for his freedom or he will simply outlive his master who has promised him that he placed instructions in his will to free him when he dies. But, when his master dies during a fight Blanche finds out that his master may not have done as he promised. When he breaks into his master's widow's house to look for a copy of the will he discovers that she has burned it and she intends to keep him as a slave forever.Blanche runs at the first good opportunity and heads straight into chaos of Bleeding Kansas followed by slave catchers and encouraged by members of the Underground Railroad. Maybe he can make it if he can determine who is really a friend, who is really a foe. This is a solid piece of historical fiction. Blanche and most of the characters are composites based on real people. The author's research shows and he is able to give a real feel for the chaos of the times and the precarious life of a slave. The descriptions of Blanche's flight and of the people he meets in Kansas are well done. The only real problem that I had with the book is that Blanche has so many of these interesting episodes and brushes with danger and the same slave catcher over and over again that this middle-aged reader began to doubt that any one person could have so many close calls and still have any hope of escaping. But, I am considerably older than the intended audience and I doubt kids would think twice about it. I took off a star because of it, though.I imagine that the author found so many great tales of close calls involving runaway slaves while doing his research that he could not bear to cut any of them so he worked them all into Blanche's escape story. I can certainly understand that sentiment. As a history teacher, I would certainly recommend this book as a great supplement in a history class.Note: I was sent an advance review copy of this book at no charge so that I could write an honest review.

You can’t say that history is right or wrong and most important we have to be careful when we judge the actions of the characters because something that was right hundreds of year before, might be wrong today. This is an historical novel about a slave boy who wants to be free. It could be as simple as that but it’s not. It is also a story about people trying to change a system that existed years ago, people that believes that slavery is wrong and who is risking their lives to do what they think is right. It could also be a story about the willpower a young man can have or a story about survival. Take your pick, the main thing is that is a great story and you should read it.Blanche is 14 year old running away from slavery. A young kid, who against the laws of the time knows how to read, and this brings him some advantages and some problems. In his journey to freedom he meets a series of characters, good and bad, some willing to help him and the ones that want to catch him.Dennis deserves a round of applauses for writing about Blanche. He created a character that feels real and whose feelings you can almost feel yourself. Some of the decisions that Blanche has to make lead to some scenes that were hard to read, they really moved me to the core (I almost cry with the scene of Husband). The descriptions of the time, the places and all that surrounds this moment on history were a great complement to a great story. You will find out that this book is more than just a tell about a period of history.A very recommendable book for YA or adults.*** I received a complimentary copy in exchange of an honest review ***
