1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wish there were more By Ash This isn't a book, so I don't know why the book-related questions. However, these pawns are great! My only complaint is that there are many characters not represented in this collection. We were already in the second Giantslayer book when these were purchased for our group, and it turns out that many tokens are just for the first book :(

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Forrest & Lynn Great tokens for use with Pathfinder. Exactly as advertised.

Each disorder is classified by description, risk factors if applicable, s/s, diagnostic tests, treatment and follow up. Practice pearls boxes are great. I use this to study for my FNP classes. It's a smaller book than I expected, about 9 inches tall by 6 inches or so and spiral bound.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Nice addition to current practice By Chrizzee B This is a very helpful and concise go to book. I use this in daily practice and I have been in practice for about 4 years, it almost flow like a SOAP note, signs symptoms HPI, what to look for and what assessment and plan is. I would recommend this book, only 4 stars because I think that with as much as I use it it showed wear pretty quickly.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Great book for using a great camera! By W. E. Matthews, III I cannot say enough good about is book! I picked up one of the first P900's to hit Houston, TX right after the release date and have been having a blast learning how to use the camera to its best advantage. I had been reading the Nikon manual since before the launch and read it again after getting the camera. The Nikon manual is very helpful in understanding how to change settings, etc., but this book explains what the settings mean and the implications of using them. White gives useful examples with accompanying example pics. When you read the book, read the 200+ page Nikon manual along with it. If you buy a P900, be sure to buy this book!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great book for the Nikon P900 By LEJ This was a gift for my father. He loves it. He likes the writing style and the information inside is clear, concise and easy to understand. I ended up buying the book for the P610 for myself because my dad likes this one so much.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. but I found that the book explains many things better and in plain language By Chris Hess Although the book states that it's not a replacement for the official Nikon Coolpix P900 manual, but I found that the book explains many things better and in plain language. So, I found myself using this book more often than the official manual due to the ease of its use.

A must-have for language lovers, this compendium contains hundreds of mind-stretching observations that are contradictory or illogical on one level, yet true, witty, and often profound on another.

ox-y-mor-on-i-ca (OK-se-mor-ON-uh-ca) noun: Any variety of tantalizing, self-contradictory statements or observations that on the surface appear false or illogical, but at a deeper level are profoundly true.

For example:

"Melancholy is the pleasure of being sad."—Victor Hugo

"To lead the people, walk behind them."—Lao-tzu

"You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap."—Dolly Parton

For over a decade Dr. Mardy Grothe has delighted readers with this collection of 1,400 of the most provocative quotations of all time. From ancient thinkers like Confucius, Aristotle and Saint Augustine, to great writers like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and G. B. Shaw, to modern social observers like Woody Allen and Lily Tomlin, Oxymoronica celebrates the power and beauty of paradoxical thinking. All areas of human activity are explored, including love, sex, romance, politics, the arts, marriage and family, and, of course, the literary life. Sure to grab the attention of language lovers everywhere, the wise and witty observations in this book are as entertaining as they are intellectually nourishing.

Oxymoronica: Paradoxical Wit and Wisdom from History's Greatest Wordsmiths, by Mardy Grothe

From Publishers Weekly Coining the titular word to describe quotations that contain seemingly self-contradictory elements, psychologist and amateur wordsmith Grothe (Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You) gathers hundreds of examples—ancient, modern and everything in between—of such sayings. From Confucius’s "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s own ignorance" to Yogi Berra’s "Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded" to Adrienne Rich’s "Marriage is lonelier than solitude," these bon mots offer pithy insights and sometimes clever advice. Grothe’s 14 chapters group the quotations by theme; in "Sex, Love, and Romance," for example, Louise Colet advises readers to "Doubt the man who swears to his devotion," while in "Oxymoronic Insults (and a Few Compliments)," Henry James reflects that George Eliot is "magnificently ugly…. in this vast ugliness resides a most powerful beauty which, in a very few minutes, steals forth and charms the mind." Potentially useful to public speakers and certainly bound to amuse word mavens, Grothe’s collection is good clean fun—with a bit of an edge: the last section offers "Inadvertent Oxymoronica," in which George W. Bush is quoted as saying "One of the common denominators I have found is that expectations rise above that which is expected." Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From School Library Journal Adult/High School–Grothe is an inveterate collector of words and phrases. He is especially fond of paradoxical sayings, "ideas stood on their heads." He has been gathering such seemingly contradictory quotations as Carrie Fisher's "Instant gratification takes too long" or Yogi Berra's pithy "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded" for years. For him, these sayings are like oxymorons but with more depth. Thus, he coined the term, "Oxymoronica, n.; A compilation of self-contradictory terms, phrases, or quotations; examples of oxymoronica appear illogical or nonsensical at first, but upon reflection, make a good deal of sense and are often profoundly true." This book is an assemblage of his collection divided into 14 chapters ranging widely in subject and author from wit and wisdom through love and sex to insults, written by Ovid through Oscar Wilde to George W. Bush, with many thought-provoking stops in between. The collection can be dipped into frequently and offers much to think about upon first, second, or third readings. It will be useful for public speakers, debate classes, English assignments, and essays. There is an index of authors and broad topics, though finding a specific quote might prove challenging. There's even a Web site to submit new ideas or to join a discussion with like-minded devotees. The whole collection might be summed up by Berra, "I didn't say everything I said." Lots of fun and much to ponder.–Susan H. Woodcock, Fairfax County Public Library, Chantilly, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review “As addictive as a bowl of peanuts--you can’t stop after just one paradox from Oxymoronica!” (A. Ross Eckler, author of Making the Alphabet Dance)“Truly the most comprehensible collection of contradictions around.” (Erin McKean, Editor of Verbatim: The Language Quarterly)Promises to engage you for long moments -- or short hours -- in its paradoxical simplicity. The Wit and Wisdom of Incongruity By Robert Morris One of my best friends had an aunt (let's call her Ginny) who, like Yogi Berra, could bring a lively conversation to a screeching halt with one brief comment. Aunt Ginny really was unaware of this (shall we say) unique talent. She was not trying to be funny, clever, etc. On the contrary, she offered what she considered to be a serious comment and everyone knew what her intended meaning was. For example:"Quicker than you can count Jack Robinson.""Deader than a door knob.""She was born on a silver platter."My personal favorite:"He's on a treadmill to Bolivia."I am curious to know what Aunt Ginny would make of Grothe's book. (She died many years ago.) She would no doubt agree with many observations but perhaps not see the humor in any of them. Grothe has selected what he calls "oxymoronical" material from his vast collection of quotations. With regard to the term, his definition: "Oxymoronica, n.; A compilation of self-contradictory terms, phrases, or quotations; examples of oxymoronica appear illogical or nonsensical at first, but upon reflection, make a good deal of sense and are often profoundly true." As other reviewers have correctly noted, many of the quotations which Grothe has assembled are hilarious, others insightful, still others cynical. All of them qualify as "oxymoronica."Among those forgotten or of which I was previously unaware, my personal favorites include:"Meetings are indispensable when you don't want to do anything."John Kenneth Galbraith"Hatreds are the cinders of affection."Sir Walter Raleigh"I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?"Benjamin Disraeli"What you get free costs too much."Jean Anouilh"Good fiction is that which is real."Ralph Ellison"Nothing is funnier than unhappiness."Samuel Beckett (in Endgame)Selections are organized within fourteen chapters, each of which has a generic subject such as "Sex, Love & Romance," "Ancient Oxymoronica," and "The Literary Life." I presume to suggest that Grothe's anthology be skimmed occasionally rather than read cover-to-cover. In the Foreword, Richard Lederer offers these comments which serve as an appropriate conclusion to my review: "Paradox is a particularly powerful device to ensnare truth because it concisely illuminates the contradictions that are at the very heart of our lives. It engages our hearts and minds because, beyond its figurative employment, paradox has always been at the center of of the human experience." Or, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, if people don't want to appreciate oxymoronica, nobody's going to stop them. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out The Portable Curmudgeon and The Return of the Portable Curmudgeon, both edited by Jon Winokur; also John M. Shanahan's The Most Brilliant Thoughts of All Time (In Two Lines or Less) and Condensed Knowledge: A Deliciously Irreverent Guide to Feeling Smart Again, edited by Will Pearson.

By Matthew Dodd I am sure if someone had told me before I read this book that it was an easy-to-read, entertaining, and informative combination of a simple quote book, many cultural and historical references, and a scholarly and literary analysis of paradoxes and oxymorons, I would not have bought it. Well, I sure am glad nobody told me exactly what the book was about because I not only bought it and read it, I thought it was an outstanding book."Oxymoronica," a new term introduced by Dr. Mardy Grothe and the title of this book, was defined inside the front cover as "any variety of tantalizing, self-contradictory statements or observations that on the surface appear false or illogical, but at a deeper level are true, often profoundly true."In keeping with that definition, the book contained over 1,400 oxymoronic and paradoxical quotations from ancient times to today, organized into fourteen categories, most of which you would expect to find in any standard book of quotations (i.e. advice; insults; politics; sex, love, and romance; marriage, home, and family life). Complementing the wit and wisdom of the quotations was Grothe's historical and cultural research and his ability to present and put into a logical, often humorous, context the quotations so that I could reflect on and appreciate their profound meanings. You can open the book at random or read it sequentially and get the same pleasant experience both ways.I had many profoundly personal moments of reflection on people and events in my life throughout the pages of this book:"Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's own ignorance." Confucius"You can't make anything idiot-proof because idiots are so ingenious." Ron Burns"The child is father of the man." William Wordsworth"When you add to the truth, you subtract from it." From the Talmud"He had nothing to say and he said it." Ambrose Bierce, on a contemporary"I learned an awful lot from him by doing the opposite." Howard Hawkes, on Cecil B. DeMille"Most people when they come to you for advice come to have their own opinions strengthened, not corrected." Josh Billings"Vision is the art of seeing things invisible." Jonathon Swift"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." George Orwell, in "Animal Farm"

Absurdity is the spice of life By JLind555 There's something about oxymorons that bring us up short even as we laugh over the sheer absurdity of it all. Even the name of this little book is an absurdity in itself: "Oxymoronica"?? Reading this volume helps us to stop and think about some of the gems and malapropisms that have enlivened the English language, both planned and unplanned. Here you'll find some of the more classic Berra-isms and the wit and wisdom of Shakespeare, Aristotle, and Confucius, just to name a few. The book is well organized into different areas of life such as politics, art, romance and sex (some of the more delicious examples of oxymoronica fall into this category), marriage and literature. The book makes you reminisce on some of the choicer oxymorons of your own experience; one of my favorites came from a lawyer friend of mine, who, hearing that an upcoming court hearing was being delayed because the judge-from-hell was ill, said "Gee, I hope it's nothing trivial." "Oxymoronica" is full of hilarious examples that match or top that one. Its wisdom should be absorbed slowly, savored bit by delicious bit. To use a classic oxymoron, it's a terribly funny book.

The author of Reading the OED presents an eye-opening look at language “mistakes” and how they came to be accepted as correct—or not. English is a glorious mess of a language, cobbled together from a wide variety of sources and syntaxes, and changing over time with popular usage. Many of the words and usages we embrace as standard and correct today were at first considered slang, impolite, or just plain wrong.Whether you consider yourself a stickler, a nitpicker, or a rule-breaker in the know, Bad English is sure to enlighten, enrage, and perhaps even inspire. Filled with historic and contemporary examples, the book chronicles the long and entertaining history of language mistakes, and features some of our most common words and phrases, including:DecimateHopefullyEnormityThat/whichEnervate/energizeBemuse/amuseLiterally/figurativelyAin’t IrregardlessSocialistOMGStupiderLively, surprising, funny, and delightfully readable, this is a book that will settle arguments among word lovers—and it’s sure to start a few, too.

Bad English: A History of Linguistic Aggravation, by Ammon Shea

Review "Language is funny, and so is Ammon Shea. His excellent new book tours our irrational prejudices about language, showing that an appreciation for the quirks and ironies of language history can put our understanding on a firmer basis and restore our sense of humor."—David Skinner, author of The Story of Ain't"On the playground of language, there is no more mischievous laddie than Ammon Shea. I plan to use his new book to split the lip of the next insufferable language prig who saunters into my office to accuse me of bad English."  —Roy Peter Clark, author of The Glamour of Grammar and How to Write Short“In Bad English, Ammon Shea wastes no time challenging widely held beliefs about just what English is bad. His subtitle, “A History of Linguistic Aggravation,” gets in an opening jab at sticklers like me, who know that “irritate” means annoy while “aggravate” means “make worse.” Shea, having read the OED to write Reading the OED, is well qualified to tell us we probably don’t know as much as we think we do.”—Washington PostPraise for Reading the OED:"Oddly inspiring...Shea has walked the wildwood of our gnarled, ancient speech and returned singing incomprehensible sounds in a language that turns out to be our own."—Nicholson Baker, New York Times Book Review"Delicious...a lively lexicon."—O, The Oprah Magazine"Readworthy."—William Safire, The New York Times Magazine“Shea, an avid collector of words, displays an assortment for our pleasure as he wends his way through the alphabet.”—The Boston Globe

Mack There are two schools of thought among lexicographers and grammarians -- prescriptivists and descriptivists. The prescriptivists think that their profession includes guidance on speaking and writing "proper" English. The descriptivists believe that their job is just to describe how English is actually used. Most lexicographers and grammarians are a little bit of both. Shea tilts very much toward the descriptivist end of the spectrum -- I can only think of one place where he finds a usage to be improper. Along the way, he debunks prescriptivist claims about the improper or unhistorical nature of many words and word usages, such as "ain't," "compact," dangling prepositions, split infinitives, inappropriate apostrophes, etc. His researches into word history are learned and extraordinary, and effectively demolishe claims that certain disfavored usages are new or unattested in good authors. Furthermore, the book is a fun read. He uses humor to demonstrate that staid and proper grammarians do not know what they are talking about. His central thesis seems to be that there is no one such thing as "good English."One could wish for a little more reflection from Shea, however. Like anything which evolves over time, language changes because more useful locutions drive out older, less useful ones. How does this happen, and why? Linguist evolution requires two things -- a certain degree of stability of usage, or people could not understand each other at all, and a certain degree of change, or language could not adapt to new conditions. It seems to me that Shea underplays the role of the former. Language serves many functions, but surely the most important of them is intelligibility. Change words and usage too fast and people cannot understand each other: indeed, one of the tactics used by "in groups" is to modify language in ways sufficiently radically that they cannot be understood by the general public. How much "incorrect" usage -- i.e. linguistic change -- can a language tolerate before it becomes another language? Why does language change? Is there an overall pattern to linguistic change, or are its changes purely arbitrary? Shea touches on such questions, but does so lightly and in passing. It would be beneficial if he would write another, more philosophical, book that address these deeper questions. Still, a very good book and an excellent introduction to issues confronting language and its usages.

The language books usually are not too interesting, while going through this one you’ll have a great time By Helpful Advice The books that teach language usually are not too interesting, to put it politely, instead of saying boring or tiresome. ‘Bad English’ by Ammon Shea certainly does not fall into this category, although out of it reader will learn a lot, but equally important – have a great time. This is the first book I read from this author (didn’t read his ‘Reading the OED’) and as not native speaker, using Shea book I managed to learn a lot about many “mistakes” in English I didn’t knew earlier, which now became more or less accepted as correct. On the book pages author tries to give a background on history of English language, describing the ways how the language slowly developed, using numerous sources and constantly changing through the long times of its usage.Reading it, it is possible to learn about many modern and common English words these days that you would never say that they were treated as a misspelling or considered indecent, but due to the author style who provided his story in an interesting way, offering numerous examples, these three hundred pages will fly. Therefore all recommendations to this funny but also educational work with which certainly will not be bored.

By Sharon Isch In his latest language book, Ammon Shea, the author of "Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages," looks into the "history of linguistic aggravation." Take, for example, the confusing history of the apostrophe and the seven ways we can use it... the pros and cons of splitting infinitives... a history of "ain't" and the many ways "like" is used and abused. There's also a chapter on words that are not words, like "stupider," "irregardless" and "preventative." And sins of grammar--for example, turning a noun like "impact" into a verb or "fun" into an adjective. So why, unlike with other languages, doesn't there exist a regulating body to "guard English against the pernicious efforts of foreigners, poets and teenagers, all of whom seek to render it impure?" Shea tackles that question, too.The author ends his book with a quiz: Of 14 quotations he lists, he challenges us to pick which are by Shakespeare and which come from the disparate world of hip-hop/rap. Sounds easy? Don't be so sure. There's also a list of 221 words now in common use that were once frowned upon, along with who said so and why. Among them: awful, balding, bogus, bus, coincidence, date, debut, donate, fine, fun, funny, happening, healthy, hectic, hopeful, hurry, ice cream, invite, lovely, nice, rotten, sick, thanks, vest, upcoming, zoom.A good read. Useful, too.

It has your typical play through, all the side missions (including all of Riddler's). And towards the end has character bios for the major players. It also goes into detail on the background of the villains maps of every area. Overall a good, quality hardcover guide.

By Carló Vene Jr It is the absolute worst guide I've used in the last 5 years.Let me give a little background, I ABSOLUTELY love Batman. You know the nerdy collectible statues that go for about 400 bucks at the local comic book store? I buy those. I spent at around 1k on 4 different Batman statues.I played and beat the game. I absolutely loved it, and I 100%-ed the game. So now why would I give it 2 stars? The author does not give any details at all. The character bios that the top review mentioned -- they are straight from the game. They don't even take initiative to write something else.As for the riddles, I gave up on the guide. I get it, I should be able to figure them out myself, but then why do I need the guide? I bought this to support Prima and Rocksteady on their game. I bought the Silver Ps4, the limited edition Xbox one game, and the collector's guide. So I will shed the money for something I support, I advise people NOT TO on this guide. Sorry, off topic but my point is that if you can't give details on collectibles, than why spend 40 bucks on a guide when you can go on Google and YouTube for free?!I will update again to show how terrible the detailing is.Edit: A few more details: I actually checked out the book some more and the actual campaign itself is well done. Not the best, but certainly an acceptable one. The achievements, are absolutely lacking in detail. No sort of tip, or anything to try and help out. I've seen several YouTube videos, all which help a lot more. So once more, what a waste of money. The same is said for the Augmented Reality portions, also the images don't help in some cases. For example [a minor spoiler], Catwoman was one of the riddles, however, I didn't take a picture of her before I finished the Riddler's Trials. This online guide just said you could take a picture of the collar even after she has been rescued [which helped since I wasn't aware until I was doing the riddles]. No mention at all from the guide. As for the physical item, it is gorgeous and we'll done. The lithograph are a nice bonus, and once more you get a free digital e-code.So only get this if you collect hardcovers (which I also do) or must dish out the money to go with a bang as this is RS last Arkham game.If neither or not as big a fanatic, just stick with online walkthroughs or videos.Edit - As of July 11th, Prima has not responded to an email I have sent to them about issues of this guide. Amazon themselves will not help out as the item has been opened. So not only are they horrendous with some of their guides [I am currently playing Witcher III, and that guide is actually well done], but they have an even worse customer service.

They don't tell you how to complete some of the Riddler Trophies and some of the pictures showing their locations are small and difficult to see.I'd say buy this if you are a fan of either A. Batman or B. Collecting hardcovers. As for the extras, the lithographs are nice, but the mini-encyclopedia they have on the characters you see in Arkham Knight are part of an upcoming design works book.
